Secondary Summer Reading Assignments

High School

Book One: All students must complete the Character Story Head assignment.

Book Two: After you read the second book, write a one-page response. (No less

than 350 words, Times New Roman, Font 12, black ink.) In your response you will

present a thoughtful, well-developed response to your reading. Your written

response might be a personal connection to the theme, character, conflict, etc.,

within the book; it might be academic or even creative. Your paper must

demonstrate your understanding and your thinking of the text read. You are not

critiquing the novel or the author. You are not summarizing the book. You are

responding to your thoughts, your thinking that resulted from reading the book.

You will bring a hard copy (printed) to class on the first day. DO NOT DELETE

YOUR TYPED COPY. Once school begins your teacher will give you her

Turnitin.com information so that you may submit your work according to our

school policy.

Krashen, S. 2009. "Anything but Reading." Knowledge Quest, vol. 37, no. 5, pp.

18–25.

Dear Parents,

The TCS English department believes comprehension and retention to be vital for

academic success. Through the summer reading program, students strengthen these skills.

Additionally, we want to encourage our students to become lifelong readers. Summer learning

loss or setback, often referred to as the “summer slide,” is a devastating loss of academic

achievement students experience during the summer months. One of the most effective means

of improving reading achievement levels is supplying students with engaging and

comprehensive reading materials. Increased time reading can improve reading, writing, and

spelling ability, cultivate larger vocabularies, and develop understanding of complex

grammatical structures (Krashen, 2009). When schools close for the summer, students’ reading

opportunities diminish.

Each grade, 6th- 12th, has been assigned ONE novel read with a choice board for their

second selection. Students are to complete their reading of two novels before the first day of

school. On the first day students will bring their work to their teacher. These will constitute

the first two daily grades for their English course work and cannot be dropped. Grading will

reflect the students work and completion of the assignments.

If your student has any questions concerning their assignment they are welcome to

contact the English Department Chair ([email protected]), Miss Weiman, or Dr. Welpman

([email protected] / [email protected] ).

Thank you for your continued support for Christian education. Thank you for allowing

us to partner with you and your family.
