No Pass, No Play?

As the first six weeks of school comes to a finish, a number of high school athletes have been scrambling throughout the Rio Grande Valley trying to get their grade point averages above the 70 passing mark in order to comply with the University Interscholastic League’s “No Pass, No Play” rule. According to the UIL, any student contending in whichever UIL event may regain “eligibility an unlimited number of times throughout the school year. Passing means a minimum grade of 70 on all courses except identified advanced classes”. Ineligible means that students must “wait” seven calendar days” after the three-week evaluation period and grading period to recuperate playing status. Is this a first-class rule? You bet! Many students assume that winning or even losing on the field means that books can wait until they accomplish something on the playing field. In the past, when this “No Pass, No Play” rule did not even exist, students who botched, would still be permitted to participate on Football

Friday nights just because they were superstar athletes. Coaches would also try to encourage teachers to pass these players just so that they can “win one for the team”. Whoopee-do! Today, student athletes who desire to attend a Division One college must achieve at least a score of a 20 on their ACT or even a high 1100 on the SAT in order

to be considered at this playing level. A good number of students who score low on their placement exams will have to attend Division II or III colleges. So much for this “star player’s” fame and glory. Student athletes must recognize that winning on the field is imperative, but you have to be triumphant in the classroom first. Will this harm a football, volleyball, basketball, or other programs?

Yes. However, it is a parent’s responsibility to inspire their own children who are reluctant with not wanting to studying before we can blame any teacher, coach, or administration. As parents, it is our job to make sure that our children understand that education in the classroom comes first, if not, then it’s No Pass, No Play!

(McAllen, Tx)-Playing before a near capacity crowd at Nikki Rowe Warrior Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, the Lady Rattlers from Sharyland outplayed the Lady Warriors by sweeping their 30-5A District opponents in an intense matchup winning 25-13, 25-23, 25-18. Alyssa Sanchez had six kills and Iannelli Garza added 10 digs. For the Lady Rattlers, Ady Kazemi had a big afternoon with 21 assists and 11 digs, making diving plays to give her team the edge. Brook Tredaway proved to be a major treat in the middle with two block shots and 10 kills on the opposite side. Jenny Corey also had 19 digs with five kills. Sharyland improves to 16-8 overall and sits at 1-0 in district play. Rowe falls to 0-1 in 30-5A.

District 30-5A ActionMcAllen Memorial Lady Stangs easily defeated Rio Grande City 25-9, 25-8, 25-17. Holly McNallen had 13 assists with three kills followed by Ashley Doffing who had a spectacular afternoon with 10 kills. Valerie Avila also added to the Stangs’ victory with 14 kills and 4 digs. For the Rattlers, Nina Acevedo contributed with five kills, one block, and one ace. McAllen Memorial ups

their record to 18-6, 1-0 in 30-5A district play while Rio Grande City drops to 1-12, 0-1. McAllen High also added a district win by spiking their way past La Joya 25-8, 25-18, 25-19 with Meelia Saulter serving for eight points and 10 assists with Becca Valdez adding nine points with seven kills. Haley Hoffman had 11 points and 10 assists, with five kills. Sarah Wellburn contributed with nine points and an impressive 12 kills for the Lady Bulldogs who stay atop the standings with Memorial and Sharyland all tied at 1-0 in district.

District 31-5A Action PSJA High entertained

Edinburg in a wild four game matchup with the Lady Bobcats spiking away with the win 23-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-23. In an intense matchup, M. Slayton of the Lady Bobcats did all she could in the first game, but the Lady Bears won that game 25-23. Slayton, who finished with 19 kills and 30 digs was able to get her team back on center and easily won the second game 25-18 with Cassandra Trevino having a big game with eight kills, 25 digs, and served four aces

Game three proved to be an easy task again for the Lady Bobcats easily winning 25-16 but then the Lady Bears came alive in the fourth game but at the end it was the superb play by Bri Ledesma who added 31 digs for the day and Jenetta Sanchez was busy with 32 assists, 19 digs, and one ace. The Lady Bobcats now up their season record to 10-11, 3-1 in district play while PSJA falls to 1-11, 1-3 in 31-5A play. In more Saturday action, Weslaco traveled to Edinburg Economedes falling in three games 25-15, 25-14, 25-19 with Morgan Brown adding nine kills, eight assists, nine digs, and eight points. Stephanie Murillo also contributed to the Lady Jags with 25 digs, 10 points, and eight kills.

Suzanne Reyna 17, Weslaco H.S.Senior maintains a 3.7 GPA and is a mem-ber of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Excellence Award, and has been a member of the Varisty Volleyball and Basketball team for three years. Major undecided.

Benito Lady Greyhounds 25-19, 18-25, 25-13, and 25-17 to remain in first place in the 32-5A standings with a 5-1 record and improving to 14-7 overall. The Lady Cards are still tied with cross town rival Harlingen South and Brownsville Rivera. Jessica Gonzalez had 19 kills and Brandi McGee added 10 more in their brilliant efforts. Liz Nichols led the Lady Cards with 15 points. In more Saturday afternoon games, Brownsville Rivera kept pace with Harlingen and Harlingen South at 5-1 in district by downing Pace 25-18, 25-18, and 25-11 while Brownsville Hanna had to go the distance with Brownsville Porter in four games winning 25-9, 25-19, 16-25, and 25-19.

District 32-4A Action Mission Veterans Memorial continued its dominance of 32-4A as they rolled past Edcouch-Elsa 25-13, 25-17, and 25-20. Jaclyn Lopez led the Lady Pats with 17 kills and 25 digs followed by Isela Flores who added 13 kills and teammate Kolby Warren contributed with five kills and five blocks. The Lady Pats are now 6-0 in 32-4A and up their season record to 18-3 overall. For the Lady Jackets (10-11, 3-3)Carolina Saenz led her team with four blocks and 10 kills. Others contributing were Kelly Saldana, 29 digs, 4 kills; Lilly Juarez 34 digs; and Cecilia

The Lady Wolverines improve to 5-1 in district play with Keila Guerra leading the way with nine blocks and 10 kills and Lily Rendon was strong with eight blocks and 13 assists. Noemi Sanchez contributed with 15 digs and Samantha Perales had 16 assists with five digs. For Mission High, Kristina Paiz had 40 digs, three kills, and eight points to help Mission stay at 5-1 in

district while Lauren Beard managed seven kills for the Lady Wildcats. Weslaco East falls to 0-5 in district and 3-10 for the season.

District 32-3A ActionValley View (9-9, 4-1) continued its bid for another state berth by defeating Progreso 25-18, 25-22, 25-17. The Lady Tigers were led by college-bound Jessica Rodriguez who had 20 assists and seven aces; Lizzette Maldonado had a big day with 25 kills while Jessica Garcia added 26 digs. In more action, the Lady Pirates of Hidalgo defeated Rio Hondo in four games 25-9, 25-14, 21-25, and 25-23 to up their record to 11-5, 4-1. The Lady Pirates will meet Valley View in a 32-3A showdown.

The Los Fresnos Falcons (4-0, 1-0) moved into the top spot ranking in Touchdown Dave’s Top 10 Polls after flying past PSJA (21-14), Nikki Rowe (44-3), and previously undefeated Brownsville Pace (31-14). Falcon quarterback Brandon Kretz passed for 326 yards and four touchdowns guiding them past Nikki Rowe 44-3 and they somehow managed to hold on to a narrow lead against the Bears, despite giving up 448 yards on defense. In the Falcon’s 32-

5A opener against a highly talented Viking team, head coach Scott Ford changed his game plan and surprised Pace by running wild for 252 yards on 35 carries. “We’ve been known in the past for not so good of a defense and our plan worked tonight,” said Ford. Running back Luis Campos rushed for 142 yards and scored all four touchdowns on 19 carries. How good are these birds? Just ask head football coach Gary Lauer of Nikki Rowe. “They’re a really good team. What else can I say,” added Lauer. Now Ford will take his team on the road for two 32-5A games at Hanna (2-2, 0-1) and at No.3 Harlingen (4-1, 1,0). McAllen Memorial drops from the preseason number one spot to No.6 after losing to Brownsville Pace 54-35.

Jesse Martinez rushing for 75 yards on 13 carries and Andrew Uribe added another 74 yards on the ground with a touchdown to give the Raiders a 14-0 lead before the half. The Donna Redskins and Tom Chavez were able to score 28 points. The Raiders will be tested this weekend when they travel to face Tony Villarreal and the

Weslaco Panthers (4-1, 0-1) on September 30th and followed by the Edinburg Bobcats (1-3, 1-0) at home on October 7th in 31-5A district play. The No. 10 Weslaco Panthers are coming off a stunning loss to Edinburg last Thursday night 27-7, but expect Villarreal to be prepared for his match up with his former assistant head coach, while he coached at North.

Cards FlyingHigh In 32-5A(Harlingen, Tx)-In what was suppose to be a close game filled with all the hoopla needed on a Thursday night, the No.3 Harlingen Cardinals disposed of Brownsville Rivera 41-13 in 32-5A play to put the Cardinals in the driver’s seat at (4-1, 1-0) in district. The Cards ended four years of losing to the black and maroon by scoring 17 unanswered points at the end of the half. Robert Sanchez, quarterback for the Cardinals, hit the end zone from nine yards out. The Cards were impressive with Justin Hernandez who added 84 yards for the night and two touchdowns followed by William White, who also added a score, finished the evening with 75 yards on 11 carries. In more action, at Edinburg, the Cards were glad that this game ended after Edinburg mounted a desperate attack but fell short 41-33. The Cards committed six turnovers,

uncommon in a football game especially when the weather was perfect and dry. Cardinal quarterback was able to take matters into his own hands by passing for 252 yards and rushing for another 123 yards and two scores. This performance earned him the HSSM/MVEC Player of the Week Award. Harlingen seemed to have things in control leading 35-19 with about eight minutes to play but head coach Robert Vela, of the Edinburg Bobcats, will use every minute possible to earn a win. Bobcat quarterback Bobby Trevino did just that. He broke loose for a 78 yard touchdown run to make it 35-27 at the 7:34 mark. The Cards responded with a high-deep punt by Johnny Guillen and Marty Trevino downed the pigskin inside the one-yard line. A few plays later, Art Gonzalez recovered a fumble on the Edinburg 4-yard line. The Cards took it in, a few plays later, to make it 41-27. This game featured more than 720 yards in total offense by both teams,

along with eight turnovers, two blocked punts, and a lot of fans looking awe. “I’m proud of these kids. They played their hearts out,” said Vela. The Cards will travel to Pace October 1st and they will then host No.1 Los Fresnos on October 7th.

(Edcouch,Tx)-Head coach Joe Solis was finally put to test by the Mission Eagles, in both teams 32-4A district opener, despite the Yellowjackets winning 21-0. “We didn’t excute well and they were ready for us,” adds Solis. The Yellowjackets now 1-0 in district are vying to three-peat as champions from 32-4A but the Eagles made Solis coach his team with big plays. The Eagles (0-4, 01) forced Edcouch-Elsa to six consecutive punts and four first downs before the half. “A lot of people don’t give our team credit. We are a good team. Things just have not fallen our way,” said Eagle coach Tommy Lee. Leading 7-0 in the fourth, the Jackets came alive with a 12 play, 74-yard drive to make it 15-0 when sophomore running back Ronnie Villalpando added his second score of the evening with a three yard touchdown run. His first TD came on a 43-yard scamp to give EE their first score of the night in the first quarter. The Yellowjackets also scored a safety when Jeremy Burnias sacked Mission quarterback Nathan Salazar to give the yellow and gold a 9-0 lead at the half. Against winless Raymondville, the Yellowjackets won 51-0 with Villalpando breaking loose for a 59-yard touchdown run. He finished with 100 yards for the night. E-E took a 31-0 halftime lead. Solis will now prepare for their next meeting at Roma (1-3) followed by an October 7th showdown with Mercedes (2-2, 0-1) at home.

The Coyotes will entertain the McAllen Bulldogs at home on October 7th in their district opener and expect last year’s State 5A Division One Quarterfinalist to pick up where they left off: defense of their 30-5A District title. The Bulldogs are coming off a surprising win over PSJA last week and head coach Tony Harris says his Bulldogs (1-4) just woke up. Against Laredo Alexander, the Coyotes slaughtered the Bulldogs 34-13 and again, crushed the Edinburg Economedes Jags 37-7. Martinez had big nights rushing for 215 yards and three touchdowns, followed by another 157 yards and five touchdowns against the Jaguars. Never the less, the Coyotes always roam the mesquite woodlands waiting for their next prey once district comes around.

(McAllen, Tx)- It never seems to amaze me when a team is ranked number one and falters. The McAllen Memorial Mustangs drop from No.1 to No.6 after losing to Brownsville Pace in a wild 54-35 loss. For the Valley’s top junior running back, Bradley Stephens, he rushed for 167 yards on 25 carries, caught four passes for 93 yards, returned an 88 yard kickoff for a touchdown, and scored four touchdowns.

Still this would not be enough to stop the Pace Vikings. Head coach Bill Littleton saw his Mustangs give up 524 yards in total offense to the Vikings. Against Weslaco East, Stephens rambled for 230 yards and five touchdowns, including a 80-yard run. The Stangs’ will now face Rio Grande City at home on October 7th in both teams district opener.

(Harlingen, Tx) Jim Helms, second year head coach at Harlingen South seems to know what he is doing with his Hawks. To date, the Hawks have won three games and lost one to No.2 PSJA North. Now that the non-district season is over, the only thing that matters would be one district win after another. Against Brownsville Porter, the Hawks dismantled the Cowboys 42-14 at Sams Stadium to sit at 1-0 in 32-5A play. What seemed rather strange, the game was all tied up at 7-all with two minutes left in the third quarter and with Halloween irking in the back drops, the Hawks went on to score 35 spooky points. Again, at home against Sharyland, the Hawks flew high with a convincing 52-28 win. Peter De La Garza was almost perfect for the night passing for 387 yards and completing 20-of-28 passes with five touchdowns. The Hawks will entertain the Greyhounds tonite in district action.

(Lyford,Tx) The Bulldogs crack the HSSM Polls at No.8 by staying undefeated and romping Willacy

County rival Raymondville 49-21 in 32-3A action for both squads. Lyford now 4-0, 1-0 in district was led by running back Raul Gudino who had a spectacular night rushing for 215 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns. Head coach Jaime Infante was not pleased with his team’s effort due to the fact that they lost seven fumbles on miscues. The Bulldogs have posted wins over Hebbronville 26-7 and Santa Rosa 47-25 in non-district action.

San BenitoBack on Track(San Benito, Tx)- If you ask head coach Mario Pena if he’s worried about what’s to come, he will say “not to worry” because his Greyhounds take one game at a time. With District 32-5A now in session, his defense of the title might run into snags as teams from across the Arroyo Colorado will be ready to dismantle his Greyhounds. The Hounds opened with a 32-7 victory over Brownsville Hanna after completing their non-district schedule with an impressive 2-1 record. Their only loss was a surprising PSJA win. Running back Ernie Tamez rushed for 139 yards on 31 carries in a ball control atmosphere.Harlingen South is next in line followed by Brownsville Rivera on October 7th, these Hounds will prove to everyone that 2004 was no fluke. The Greyhounds have posted a huge defensive win over the Edinburg Bobcats 21-13 in Week One.

(Edinburg, Tx)-Hurricane Rita did all the damage on Thursday night without making landfall at Bobcat Stadium as Edinburg (1-3, 1,0) notched their first win of the season against previously undefeated Weslaco 27-7 (4-1, 0-1) in 31-5A district action. A smiling Tony Villarreal, before kick off, felt that his Panthers were ready for last week’s game. As for head coach Robert Vela, he knew that this was going to be his night. “We are ready. We played a tough non-district schedule and this should have of prepared us for tonight,” says Vela. His plan worked. The Bobcats struck first in the opening drive with running back Jesse Galvan taking it in for the

Panthers Looking For Paybackscore to give the Bobcats an early 7-0 lead. At the half, the reigning 2004 31-5A Co-Champion Bobcats went to the locker room sporting a comfortable 27-0 lead, but this would be all Vela’s team would need to clinch their first district win. Dustin Ponce pounded the Panther’s defense for 169 yards and three rushing touchdowns followed by teammate Galvan adding another 146 yards on the ground to give the Bobcats 420 yards rushing for the evening. The Panthers were able to take advantage of one Bobcat miscue, a fumble recovery by Ben De La Rosa, which allow District rushing leader Mishak Rivas (533 yards)

to score his only touchdown of the evening. Rivas was limited to only 16 carries and 35 yards on the ground. The Bobcats will now face their next two opponents on the road. On September 30th, Edinburg will take on McAllen Memorial and Bradley Stephens in non-district action and again, hit

the Astroturf at PSJA Stadium to play the No.1 PSJA North Raiders in district action on October 7th. The Panthers opened their season with wins over Mission, Hanna, Roma, and Porter. All four teams have a combined record of 4-12. The Panthers will entertain the PSJA North Raiders (5-0, 1-0) tonight at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.

HSSM: Is this a Cinderella season so far for the PSJA Bears?Rios: What’s your definition of this question?

HSSM: Is this about wearing a glass slipper?Rios: At PSJA, we are always expected to win. We always talk about winning championships. Are we a Cinderella team? No.

HSSM: What makes this Bear season special?Rios: They know their roles. There is no controversy here. The most important thing, our players talk about winning.

HSSM: What has been one of your memorable moments in coaching?Rios: In twenty five years of coaching, I’ve experienced 10 playoff seasons. At PSJA, as a head coach, it was special making the playoffs once in three seasons.

HSSM: Who has inspired you in all your life?Rios: As I was growing up in this profession, I would always read about are legendary coaches such as Alex Leal, Richard Flores, and John Lerma; these were coaches who made a difference in high school football every Friday night. Besides my father who is deceased, my own children, have inspired me too.

HSSM: As an educator, is teaching and coaching a rewarding experience?Rios: Yes. Definitely. This profession does not pay much. The wealth you encounter is when you have made a difference

in every student you inspire to succeed. That’s rewarding.

HSSM: What’s your opinion regarding “No Pass, No Play” rule?Rios: It puts pressure on students to do well in the classroom. You can lose kids to grades. We hope not to lose any this six weeks. It’s always a concern.

HSSM: In closing, last question. Care to make a prediction in District 31-5A?Rios: I think PSJA North, Edinburg and PSJA Bears will contend for the district title. Weslaco is knocking and so are the other schools; it’s going to be a fight every Friday night.

HSSM: Finally, will the PSJA Bears beat the PSJA North Raiders?Rios: That’s one of our goals.

McHi’s Brom Kicks 47-yarder(McAllen, Tx)-As child, junior Christian Brom played soccer and when he joined this McHi Bulldog team mid year last season, he was booting 50 yarders with no problem. But not in real game like situations. That was last year, Saturday night would be the real thing. With eight seconds left to play in the game, Brom was called on to make a lifetime field goal attempt to try and give McHi it’s first win of the year. His side approach kicking style with laces out pigskin, he booted the uprights to give the Bulldogs and a desperate head coach Tony Harris their first win of the season as they defeated PSJA 21-20 in a wild finish at Memorial Veterans Stadium in McAllen. Brom, who only stands at 5’6 is one of the area’s top notched soccer players witnessed his team rally from behind the

magic of junior QB Joaquin Hinojosa who connected with Elias Franco to put McHi ahead for the first time 18-14 with about two minutes left to play. However, PSJA (2-2) struck back when RB Marco Garcia took a pitch to sweep right to make it 20-18 with 50 seconds left to play. The all important extra point was block. Again, Hinojosa was able to get the Bulldogs within field goal range. This would be Brom’s second field goal attempt for the evening. He added three points to the board just before the half with his 28-yarder. Bulldog head coach Harris was quoted saying that “the big dog just woke up and walked off the porch”. McHi (1-4) will travel to take on last year’s State 5A Division I Quarterfinalist La Joya on October 7th in their district opener.

32-4A District Action

(Brownsville, Tx)- The Brownsville Lopez Lobos head football coach Valentin Montemayor welcomed new Mercedes Tiger head coach Gilbert Leal to District 32-4A with a rude 42-0 spanking last Friday night. Lopez (2-2, 1-0) mounted a three running back attack accounting for 464 yards rushing behind the legs of Carlos Salas, Juan Munoz, and Luis Esparza. The Tigers, now fall to (2-2, 0-1) in district play, drew first blood by driving to the Lopez 5-yard line but the Lobos defense managed to surmount a quarterback sack and took over on downs. The Lobos then march 85 yards to make it 7-0. The first of six touchdowns to be scored against the Tigers. After last week’s drubbing by Pace, Salas ended the night with 137 yards rushing on 13 carries. Quarterback Luis Esparza rushed for 78 yards and added another 100 yards in the air, including a 14-yard strike to WR Jorge Salinas. “I think the offensive line did a great job,” said an elated Montemayor.

(Hidalgo, Tx)-Jorge Pena could only watch as La Feria Lion kicker Jose Gomez missed to the left to allow the Pirates to win 14-13 in both teams 32-3A District opener at Bill Pate Stadium. The Lions scored with 34 seconds left to play in the final period and with the Lions trailing by one, Gomez needed this crucial point to tie the game and possibly send it into overtime. “That’s the way it goes. What can I say,” said a disappointed Robert Valdez, head coach of the Lions. The Lions drop to 1-3 for the season and 0-1 in district, an unfamiliar starting position for Valdez. Hidalgo improves to 2-3 in Jorge Pena’s first year as the Pirates head coach. Pena will now prepare his team for winless Port Isabel this week in a critical showdown. Pretty much the winner of this game will have a major advantage and seeding in district play. For the Pirates, Jose Nava completed 6 of 18 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown. In a rare instance, the Pirates also fell short of making their own extra point only to lose the same as the Lions did, but instead it was to Mission Veterans.

The McAllen Bulldogs and Harlingen Cardinals were invited to play in the annual classic. “Meeting legendary Dave Campbell was an honor,” says HSSM Publisher, Amador.



Pirates Win with Missed PAT

Players of the MonthIn O Week, Senior defensive back T.J. Fonseca of PSJA North made two key tackles and intercepted a pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown to give the Raiders their first win of the year over McAllen Rowe 21-16.

In O Week, Jorge “Coco” Martinez of St. Joe rushed for 251 yards on 27 carries and six touchdowns in their win over Santa Rosa 47-14. He scored on runs of 18, 1, and 6 yards in the first quarter.

In Week 2, Harlingen South Hawk quarterback Peter De La Garza passed for 335 yards and three touchdowns as they defeated the Weslaco East Wildcats 35-7. He threw scoring strikes of 52, 14, and 13 yards.

In Week 2, Mishak Rivas, a sophomore clocked with 4.4 speed in the 40 yard run rushed for 212 yards on 13 carries and scored on runs of 66, 9, and 41 yards to give Weslaco a 55-32 win over Brownsville Hanna.

In Week 2, Harlingen 6’3 quarterback Robert Sanchez passed for 252 yards and one touchdown and he also rushed for 123 yards and two more scores to lead the Cards over the Edinburg Bobcats 41-33 in non-district action. The Cards overcame six turnovers throughout the game.

In Week 3, running back 6’0 Bradley Stephens of McAllen Memorial scored five touchdowns and rushed for 230 yards in their non-district win over Weslaco East. He scored four touchdowns and rushed for 153 yards all in the first quarter. He had runs of 80, 57, 55, 5, 10 yards.

In Week 3, Los Fresnos quarterback 6’1 Brandon Kretz passed for 326 yards and four touchdowns as the Falcons flew past the McAllen Nikki Rowe Warriors 44-3. He hit four different receivers for 25, 13, 6, and 39 yard scoring strikes.

In Week 4, Brownsville Lopez running back Juan Munoz rushed for 249 yards and scored three touchdowns in their 32-4A district opener against Mercedes. Munoz, also a punter, scored on a 97-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

In Week 4, McHi Bulldog kicker Christian Brom kicked a 47-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs their first win of the season in a non-district contest win over PSJA 21-20. This was the second kick for Brom, who earlier connected on a 28 yarder before the half. He also converted on one PAT.

All winners will be awarded the RGV High School Sports Magazine/MVEC Football Player of the Week awards to be presented at each campus. Congratulations!

(Columbus, Ohio)-Vince Young did what he had to do in order to pave the way for the Texas Longhorns to compete for a BCS National Championship: beat Ohio State. Young passed his way with a 24-yard touchdown pass completion to wide receiver Limas Sweed with 2:37 left to play in the fourth quarter to give the No.2 Texas Longhorns the go-ahead win over the No. 4 Buckeyes 23-22. The Longhorn defense capped the night with two more points, a safety sack of quarterback Troy Smith who tried scrambling out of the end zone before meeting his own fate with a Longhorn defender Larry Dibbles sacking Smith for a safety. Young did what sports observes did not expect him to do and that was his passing game of 270 yards. “Obviously he’s a great runner, but tonight he was a great passer,” says A.J. Hawk, Ohio State linebacker. Young was able to tack on 76 yards on the ground and threw two interceptions before a

capacity crowd of 105,565 fans. The Longhorns added another win against the Rice Owls when freshmen sensation Jamaal Charles ran for 189 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries in his first career start, in place of RB Selvin Young who has been hampered by

The Longhorns and the Tigers are meeting for the 20th time in a series that began in 1894; their last meeting was a 28-20 win for the Longhorns in 2004 in Austin. The Tigers know that the Longhorns are explosive behind quarterback Vince Young, freshmen running sensation Jamaal Charles, and another freshmen, 6’5 Limas Sweed. The Tigers have defeated Arkansas State and Troy State, with a loss to New Mexico. In order for Missouri to even try to stay with Young and company, they must play perfect football on the field and stay away from turnovers and hold on to the ball by producing clock-grinding drives. (College Station, Texas)-With Hurricane Rita lurking at the Galveston coast line, the Texas A&M Aggies took care of business by defeating a pesky Texas State Bobcat team 44-31 behind Aggie quarterback Reggie McNeal, who passed for 317 yards and two touchdowns to only over shadow Bobcat Barrick Nealy‘s passing night of 378 yards and three touchdowns before 72,000 last minute fans entering Kyle Football Field in College Station. Aggie wide receiver Jason Carter caught 8 passes for 219 yards to give the Aggies a 2-1 record heading into this weekend’s showdown against the Baylor Bears in Big 12 conference openers. The Aggies routed SMU 66-8, again with McNeal on fire passing for 349 yards and rushing for another 100 yards himself, putting the Aggies in a two game winning streak after their bitter loss to Clemson 24-25. With the Baylor Bears (3-0) coming to town this weekend, the Aggies know that revenge is the key word around College Station after losing last year to the surprising Bears from Waco, Texas. The Bears have been equally as impressive with wins over Army, Samford, and SMU. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m.

(Dallas, Tx)-With Mark Burnell under center, all he needs is 10 seconds to make things happen and that’s what he did as he connected twice for touchdown passes of 39, 70 yards to Santana Moss in the fourth quarter to give the Washington Redskins(2-0) a 14-13 win over the Dallas Cowboys (2-1) in Texas Stadium. At the half, the Cowboys were filled with memories from the past as Cowboy former quarterback Troy Aikman, the NFL’s all-time rushing leader Emmitt Smith, and future Hall of Famer, Michael Irvin were inducted into the Ring of Honor at Texas Stadium. “This is unbelievable,” said Smith. “Being next to these two guys up there, this is an honor,” added Aikman as Irvin stood in amazement. Late in the fourth quarter, with the Boys’ ahead 13-0 after Cortez hit FG at 5:34 mark, all 65,207 Cowboy fans stood in amazement as Burnell hit Moss for a touchdown to put the Redskins up for good with less than 1:40 left to play. The Cowboys had a few opportunities to make a comeback after a brilliant run by rookie Tyson Thompson to the Cowboy 48 yard line but on the next three plays, Dallas was forced to a 6-yard run by Julius Jones and two incompletions by quarterback Drew Bledsoe. On the final play, Bledsoe hit WR Terry Glenn, but he fell short of the first down. Bledsoe remained interception-free for two games and had a superb night passing for 261 yards and completing 21-of-36 passes, while Jones rushed 22 times for 81 yards.

The Cowboys were able to stop a much depleted San Fransico 49ers teams to give them the momentum needed to meet a dangerous (0-3) Oakland Raider team. If the Cowboys expect to make the playoffs, they will need to stop Randy Moss of the Oakland Raiders because he will show no mercy towards the Dallas secondary when they meet in Oakland on October 2nd. The Raiders are 1-5 in total games and have fallen to Super Bowl Champs New England 30-20, NFC Champs Philadelphia, and Kansas City to open their season at 0-3. As for the “Triplets”, Aikman, Smith, and Irvin led the Cowboys to three Super Bowl victories and were the first players to be inducted since Jerry Jones, owner, took over the Cowboys. “I can’t write my life story without Emmitt and Troy. We’re tied together forever,” added a teary-eyed Irvin.

(Houston, Tx)-Was the firing of Houston Texan offensive coordinator Chris Palmer and replacing him with Texan’s offensive line coach Joe Pendry the right solution to the Houston Texans (0-2) woes and wabbles? The Houston Texan’s offensive line, under Pendry have allowed 13 sacks and Carr has only managed to complete

25 passes in two games for a dismal 237 yards and one touchdown. Was this a good move on head coach Don Capers part? “We have not performed up to our expectations and we needed to make an adjustment to help us move forward in the direction we want to go,” said Capers at his news conference. What direction was Capers talking about? With Pendry now the OC, Pendry will have to create a formula that will stop defenses from penetrating his line that he use to coach. Opposing defenses have stopped the Texan’s running and passing game. Pittsburgh sacked Carr five times while Buffalo added eight sacks in their season opening win 22-7. As for the Texan’s running game, the Houston Texan running back has been limited. Domanick Davis has carried the ball 29 times for 107 yards in two games followed by David Carr, who has spent most of his time scrambling

As for Roethlisberger, he won for the fifteenth time as a starter to stay at 15-0 completed passes for 14-of-21 for 254 yards. RB Willie Parker busted the Texans for 111 yards on 25 carries. On the final play of the afternoon, again Carr was sacked for the fifth time. Hopefully Joe Pendry will create some magic that Capers is looking for in the upcoming weeks. The Texans will have their hands full as they meet the Bengals on October 2nd followed by Tennesse at Reliant Stadium on October 9th. But for now, Houston we have a problem!
