CHATHAM High School Term 1 - Week 4 - 2020 NEWSLETTER DAVIS ST, CHATHAM 2430| 02 6552 2588 | [email protected] | www.chatham-h.schools.nsw.edu.au I’m sure many will not be sad to see the end of 2019 and are looking forward to 2020 with a real sense of optimism about the prospects for this year. This year will be an important one as we move towards the end of our current strategic plan and commence evaluating and setting directions for the next school planning cycle, stay tuned for ways in which YOU can be involved in shaping what Chatham High will look like in the coming years. One particularly pleasing part of our first couple of weeks back has been the number of students wearing the school uniform. Whether you choose to call it pride or commitment, wearing a uniform allows us to consider our school’s common expectations of being Respectful, Safe, Learners. We’re really excited about what we’ve got in store this year at school and hope you’ll enjoy reading about it in our newsletter or seeing it on social media, in particular a number of new staff who join us this year. If there are items of news that you think deserve telling others about, please don’t hesitate sending them through to the school. Mr Daryl Irvine Principal Welcome to the first newsletter of the decade! I’ll start by acknowledging that our school is built on land that has seen continuous human habitation for over 40,000 years and I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this country, the Biripi nation and pay my respects to their elders both past and present. I also acknowledge my Aboriginal colleagues who work tirelessly to ensure ALL students at Chatham High School are fully prepared as the future leaders of our community. We understand of course that the growth of our students is a journey families are most in connection with and without the combined effort of school and family a student will always be working at half throttle. There are plenty of ways that families can further support their students and joining either the AECG or P&C is a great way of providing input into how our school can best serve its community. Can I encourage you to overlook the best efforts of some teens when they try to lock you out of what’s happening at school and ensure you stay in touch with our staff to make sure you have the full picture of your student’s progress? If you haven’t already logged on please make sure you check out our Sentral Parent Portal where you will find details of what’s happening in your student’s school life, including attendance, timetable and calendar information.

Congratulations to three of our students who were recognised for their efforts over the long weekend in January.

Quedesha Golledge

Quedesha was named Manning River Times (Ken McDonald Memorial) Sportstar of the Year at the Taree Australia Day celebration in Queen Elizabeth Park on the Australia Day weekend. Quedesha was nominated for her golfing achievements during the year including winning the Australian 13-14 years girls’ championships at Royal Pines. Quedesha hadn’t played at Royal Pines before and managed to fight back from a poor second round to come away with a three shot victory.

Asha Clarke

Asha was named MidCoast’s Young Citizen of the Year at a civic ceremony held in Forster on Australia Day. After many of years of training with the PCYC Asha is now a volunteer and an accredited Gymnastics instructor. Asha is a great role model and now runs a weekly Koori Gymnastics program for young girls in the community who are at risk.

Madison Gill

Madison Gill was named Youth Volunteer of the Year by the Harrington Crowdy Head Chamber of Commerce Industry and Tourism. Year 10 student Madison Gill was nominated by the Crowdy Head Surf Life Saving Club for her volunteer work with the club.

Nextwave Youth Film Festival

The short film “A Murder Discovery” was inspired by the board game Cluedo, where the iconic characters were transported to a Chatham High School murder mystery. The 4.41 minute film was created by Year 11 students Keira Bosher, Samantha-Jo Gill and Sarah McDonald, selected as an official finalist of the 2019 Nextwave Youth Film Festival and was screened at the Screenwave International Film Festival in Coffs Harbour over the Christmas break. The students, their families and teacher, Mrs Humphreys all attended the Nextwave Youth Film Awards. All agreed it was a fabulous experience even though they didn’t bring home any prizes, just watching their film on the big screen with hundreds of audience members was enough. Congratulations to you all on having your passion and hard work recognised.

Dux Assembly

Last week we held an assembly to congratulate Ben Stace on his academic achievement and recognised him as Chatham High School Dux of 2019. Ben has now moved to Canberra to began his next adventure, studying Arts at ANU with the longer term plan of studying politics. We wish him all the very best for the future.

Year 7 Camp

On Wednesday 5th of February, Year 7 and the Year 10 peer leaders packed the bus and headed off to our location for the next three days. On the way up there on the bus we had fun singing loudly to all our favourite songs and little kids songs. When we just got past Gloucester we lost phone service, the Year 7 kids were not happy campers! As we kept going up the windy road some kids were sick. We finally arrived at Riverwood Downs after two hours on the bus, we were so excited to get off the bus to have lunch, go to the toilet and have fun. After we got our rooms ready we all got to know each other better by sitting in a circle on the grass where we told each other what school we came from and our favourite things to do.

When we got back to camp we had lunch with the help from Megan, Natasha and Mr K. The Year 10 peer leaders helped clean up, then we played some games indoor and outdoor before dinner at 6pm. After dinner we watched a movie, ate popcorn, had a shower and went to bed.

We wanted to thank Mr K and Miss Martin for taking the year 10 peer leaders with them so we got them a thank you present and one for Nathan and John. We would also like to thank the bus driver for driving us all there and back.

On Thursday all the kids were up at 6:30, they had so much energy, some of the boys wanted to play football at 6:45 but we said no and went for breakfast. After breakfast we played some activities and then walked back to camp. After we cleaned up the all the rooms we went on a 5km walk up and down the hill to a swimming hole, then we walked the 5km back to camp in the rain. When we were 2km away Mr K came to our rescue with the school bus to pick us all up - thank you Mr K!

On Friday it was time to come home, everyone was so excited to come home that they slept in to 7.30-8am and then we had shower and walked up to breakfast. After we had breakfast we walked back to camp to pack up our bags and get ready to put them on them on the bus to come home. After lunch we did a count to make sure we had every one then we were on our way back to Chatham High. Two hours later we arrived at school to see all the parents waiting for there for us.

Swimming Carnival

After all the rain we were blessed to have plenty of sunshine for our swimming carnival. It was a great day with our competitive swimmers doing their best then relaxing in the novelty swims. The bellyflop competition left some of the boys with sore, red stomachs while the staff were victorious in the staff vs seniors swim off.

Our farm assistant’s efforts during the prolonged drought have paid dividends. Look at the sheep enjoying the lush green cow-pea and turnip the Garry Flemming lovingly planted over the Christmas Holidays.
