A Letter from the Director Dear Parents and Students:

Welcome to High School Musical! I hope you’re as excited about this year’s musical as I am!

High School Musical is an old favorite of mine and one of the most requested titles we have heard

from Sacred Heart students over the years.

Playmakers is always working to make the spring musical even better, so you’ll want to read

the entire handbook carefully even if you are a Playmakers veteran. Returning this year are audition

workshops for actors who would like help preparing for their audition. Tech students will join actors

earlier and have a chance to work more in-depth in their focus area. For our youngest performers,

Junior Players allows 2nd and 3rd graders to grow into chorus roles and work alongside more

experienced actors. Whether you are an old pro or brand new to the program, there are ways for

everyone to be involved!

If you have questions, we hope you’ll email Playmakers for more information or come join us

for our open house in January. We want everyone to be ready to go on January 11 when we begin

our theatrical adventure!

Britt Boyd

Director – High School Musical

SHOW SYNOPSIS

Disney Channel's smash hit movie musical comes to life on your stage! Troy, Gabriella, and

the students of East High must deal with issues of first love, friends, and family while balancing their

classes and extracurricular activities.

It's the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater

Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations, and look forward to the new year. Basketball team

captain and resident jock Troy discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his

ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the

high school musical, led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the

"status quo," Troy and Gabriella's alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.

COMMUNICATION The Playmaker website, http://sacredheart.org/Playmakers, will be our primary means of communication. Please check the website often. We will use the contact information that you provided with your online registration for all Playmakers communications. E-mail blasts will only be used for last minute changes, additional information, such as costume and tech week updates, or for individual contacts VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS It takes a small army to make these productions, and that’s where our parents come in! Playmakers requires parents from each family to sign up for a volunteer position as agreed to in the online registration packet. If you have a special area of expertise where you would like to offer help, please let us know and we will find a special job for you. All volunteer sign-ups will happen through our Sign-up Genius web account. If you have questions regarding volunteer positions, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Donna Medeiros.

MAIN CAST – Parents with actors in grades 4-8 will be asked to sign up for two volunteer jobs, one pre-production job and one performance production job.

JUNIOR PLAYERS – Parents with only a Junior Player member are asked to sign up for one job, either one pre-production or one performance production job.

TECH TEAM - Volunteer roles will be arranged through email TIME COMMITMENT The Playmakers Team is dedicated to providing a quality educational and artistic experience to as many students as possible. Since we all have many time obligations and family commitments we are striving to give you detailed information on rehearsal schedules so you can make informed choices for your student and your family. Due to the nature of this year’s show, we cannot guarantee your child will have rehearsal the same days each week; schedules will be created and distributed well in advance based on the conflicts we receive on audition forms. We will do our best to honor the schedule we present by making as few or no changes to the schedule and by always starting and stopping on time. We ask that you do the same with prompt pick-up at the end of rehearsals and communication on potential conflicts or absences. COSTUMES Costumes are one of the most exciting things about being in a play and our costumer is sure to make everyone look great! While most costume pieces will be provided, both Main Cast and Junior Players are asked to provide appropriate undergarments and shoes. All costume pieces must be returned to Playmakers on the day of the last performance. Tech Team will be wearing their specially designed t-shirts for performances and are asked to provide their own black pants. Additional information on costumes, make-up, and hairstyles will be sent out prior to Tech Week. CLOSED REHEARSALS AND CHAPERONES Playmaker rehearsals are considered “closed” rehearsals. Siblings staying after school who are not in the show must sign in to ESS. Family and friends are asked to wait outside of the rehearsal area for Playmaker students. This keeps our noise level and distractions to a minimum. However, if you would like to observe rehearsals, we encourage you to become a rehearsal chaperone. You can sign up for one or more rehearsals, depending upon your availability. Chaperones will be asked to help monitor noise levels and student activity during rehearsal times, as well as supervise daily clean up.

WEEKLY REHEARSAL SCHEDULE (January 19 – April 22) The entire rehearsal schedule will be available on the Playmakers website during the week of January 18th. This will include dates when specific characters are called and is based off the conflict sheets submitted at auditions. For actors, rehearsal schedules will vary from week to week depending on which scenes are being worked on; some weeks actors may be called for fewer days than others and all will be at rehearsal more in the weeks before opening. Rehearsal schedules depend on how many scenes characters are in – more scene work means more rehearsal time. Please refer to the guide below for an idea of how many days a week actors may be called: PRINCIPALS (Grades 5-8) 3-4 days a week ENSEMBLE (Grades 4-8) 2-3 days a week JUNIOR PLAYERS (Grades 2-3) 1 day a week TECH TEAM (Grades 7-8) schedules will be determined individually based on needs and availability. Main Cast will be called based on the needs of the show and the conflicts given on audition form. Specific rehearsal schedules will be distributed no later than the first day of rehearsal. Please be as thorough as possible with your conflicts when filling out your audition form. TECH WEEK SCHEDULE (mandatory) – will be distributed at the parent meeting PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE

PICK-UP and ESS All students need to be picked up promptly when their call time or rehearsal time ends. Students will be exiting rehearsals through the double doors outside of the Moore Theatre. Students who are not picked up within 10 minutes of the end of rehearsal will be sent directly to ESS. CONFLICTS/ABSENCES Absences are defined as missing more than 45 minutes of rehearsal or more than half of your called time that day (e.g. missing 30 minutes when your call time 3:30-4:30). Rehearsal conflicts and absences are difficult on everyone, and every Playmaker is important to the process. Main Cast must fill out potential absences on the information/audition sheet and bring it to auditions. Junior Players must turn their forms into the Main Office by January 15. Tech forms will be distributed and collected in early February.

o All absences approved by the director prior to casting are considered excused. o All absences due to illness or injury are considered excused. o Peer-to-Peer and other academic conflicts are considered excused if the student checks into

the Moore prior to leaving for tutoring. Messages passed from classmates do not count as checking in.

o All other absences are unexcused. Students who fail to show up are considered unreported. o All Playmakers who have 3 or more unexcused or unreported absences will be put on probation

and will require a parent/director conference to determine his/her ongoing role in the show. If you are absent from school on a rehearsal day, you may not attend rehearsal. This is true for both excused and unexcused school day absences.

PLAYMAKER DISCIPLINE POLICY REHEARSAL GUIDELINES/BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS Playmakers follows the same rules of conduct as students are expected to follow during the school day, as outlined on the SHS website in the Code of Conduct document. Expectations for rehearsal etiquette and proper treatment of our facilities will be presented at the first rehearsal and at the parent meeting. For daily rehearsals, the Playmakers Teaching Team and chaperones will implement the following guidelines based on respect for program resources, teachers, and fellow students.

□ RESPECT FOR RESOURCES – Playmaker rehearsals and performances use several spaces in the school and many different kinds of equipment. All students are expected to respect the theatre equipment at all times (i.e.: curtains, lighting instruments, sound equipment, scripts, props, sets, and costumes). It is imperative that students only use equipment that is specifically assigned to them including, but not limited to, all of the above items. Additionally, students may not use any of the following equipment during rehearsals unless specifically requested by a Playmaker teaching team member or supervising adult, including any other teaching equipment for drama or other subjects (i.e.: musical instruments, sports equipment, computers, phones, and any other items stored in the classrooms or on the stage).

□ RESPECT FOR TEACHERS and CHAPERONES – The Playmaker Program includes many adult instructors and supervisors, such as additional professional teachers and parent chaperones. Students are expected to respond to requests from all adults with proper vocal responses, appropriate language, and cooperation.

□ RESPECT FOR FELLOW STUDENTS – Playmaker participants are expected to show their support of fellow students in three important ways: 1. Verbally – All students should use proper language and tone of voice when interacting

with fellow students during rehearsals and performances, both on and off the stage. 2. Physically - Unless students are specifically rehearsed and instructed to be physically

combative on stage, no student should interact with fellow actors through pushing, hitting, kicking, or any other aggressive physical behavior at any time on or off of the stage.

3. Emotionally – Working as a performing artist requires emotional vulnerability. All students need to support the artistic work of other actors through supportive comments, encouragement, and positive feedback. Only the director or teaching staff is allowed to give “notes” (constructive criticism) to other actors. Heckling, teasing, or provocative comments are strictly prohibited.

THREE STRIKES, “YOU’RE OUT” Playmakers will issue “strikes” for students who are not following the rehearsal guidelines. A “strike” is a reminder to the student that their behavior does not meet Playmaker expectations. A strike may be given by any member of the teaching team or a daily parent supervisor. Strikes will be tallied for by the director. A student is allowed only three strikes before further disciplinary measures are taken. Depending upon the severity of the behavior, the following additional disciplinary actions may be taken:

Page 9: HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL - Sacred Heart Schoolsacredheart.org/Playmakers/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/HSM-handbo… · High School Musical is an old favorite of mine and one ... It's the

9

• Parental Notification – A parent will be notified by phone if a student receives a strike during any one rehearsal or if a student “strikes out”. Additionally, any one of the following behaviors may result in immediate probation: improper vocal responses or language, inappropriate physical interactions with fellow students, blatant disrespect for facilities or Playmaker resources, or an ongoing lack of participation in the program.

• Probation - Students who receive parental notification are expected to adjust behaviors by the following rehearsal and to continue to follow the behavior guidelines for subsequent rehearsals. Failure to meet rehearsal expectations may result in suspension from the program. ***JUNIOR PLAYER PROBATION ***

If a Junior Player is put on probation they may only return to the program if accompanied by a parent during ALL subsequent rehearsals and/or performances.

• Suspension – Students who fail to meet behavior expectations during probation may be suspended from the Playmaker program until a parent/director conference can be held to discuss a student’s ongoing participation. Consequently, student participation in the program may be limited or revoked by the director, including changing of roles and/or line load, participation in certain scenes and songs, or limited backstage access. Pro-rated tuition refunds may be granted for students who do not continue with the program. Due to production costs, no refunds will be granted for any students who leave the program after March 25, 2015.

ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL KNOW YOUR STUFF Memorizing lines, lyrics, and cues is one of the major responsibilities of all performers. We’re in this together! Performers who struggle with the material make it difficult for the entire cast to rehearse. Playmakers who are not actively working on memorization or cues by the following due dates may be asked to meet with the director to discuss the continuation of their role.

TECH TEAM MEMBER INFO o Tech Team members must currently be in grades 5 - 8. o Read through all of the information in the handbook before making a commitment to our

Playmaker Production. Please note in particular our rehearsal and tech schedule, our discipline policy, and volunteer requirements.

o Priority for Tech Team is given to returning Team members from the previous year. Additional spots are filled on a first-come first served basis after meeting with Ms. Boyd. Please do not register for Tech unless you meet one of these requirements.

Job Assignments: There are many backstage jobs to fill for High School Musical. We need light board operators, sound operators, deck crew, props masters, and many more helpers to put on our show. All students who sign up for our production program will be “cross-training” for the various backstage jobs. Individual assignments will be made prior to Tech Week. Schedule Conflicts: It is important that production students attend our scheduled training sessions so they will feel confident fulfilling their backstage roles. Make sure to double check the schedule and note that no conflicts are allowed for actors or Tech Team members during Tech Week and performances. MAIN CAST INFO

MAIN CAST AUDITION INFORMATION

AUDITION OVERVIEW

2nd and 3rd graders No auditions for Junior Players 4th graders AND 5th – 8th graders who do not want any lines You only need to prepare the song (Bop to theTop). On audition day, all 4th graders will come into the music room together to practice and sing in small groups for Mr. Linnes, our music director. 5th – 8th graders who want to have lines Prepare one scene from the audition packet. All roles can be performed by boys or girls. Please choose one that best reflects a character you would like to play. We will be looking at the character you create, voice (volume and diction), movement and how well you understand what’s going on. If you are not memorized, be familiar enough with the piece that your face is not buried in the script. You’ll also be singing the song from the audition packet (Bop to the Top). Mr. Linnes might also work with you to see how high or low you can sing.

A note on scenes

This year, you’ll notice that we’re using scenes instead of monologues. You’ll be preparing one of the characters and the other character will be read by our reader (a director or other adult who will be sitting in a chair). When you’re practicing, have someone else read the other lines or record them and practice the scene with yourself!

AUDITION SONG All actors should learn and be prepared to sing it by themselves or in a small group. See Website for audio.

Scenes & Audition Materials for Speaking/Singing Roles

Scene 1 – Jack Scott (The school bell rings. The Students run to their homeroom classes and sit listening to the morning announcements. Lights up on Jack Scott sitting at a mic in an announcer’s booth. The moment he turn on his mic, he becomes a hip, velvet-fogged DJ.) Jack Scott Yo yo yo, Wildcats, listen up for the very first morning announcements of the brand new year. This is Jack Scott, the Velvet Fog of East High with the Homeroom 411 on what’s going down and coming up this week. The Science Decathlon finals are on Friday; see Taylor “Learning Curve” McKessie for more skinny on the hooey. (fast) During free period, the Science Club will meet in Room 213 and then switch midway with the AV Club in Room 312 for the next two and a half sessions, then reverse and alternate their schedules for the second half of the winter quarter. The Skydiving Club will be meeting at 3:00pm on the roof deck, and the First-Aid Club will be waiting for them down in the parking lot below. All for now, Peeps.

Scene 2 – Hallway – Monday, 8:15am Gabriella and Troy

(Troy waits outside in the hall for Gabriella. They stare at each other in disbelief, finishing each other’s sentences.) Gabriella I don’t --- Troy (whispering) --- believe it Gabriella Me --- Troy (whispering) --- either. But how… Gabriella We just moved here to Albuquerque. I can’t believe you live here, too. I looked for you at the lodge on New Year’s Day, but --- Troy (whispering) We had to leave first thing, Gabriella (whispering now too) Why are you whispering? Troy Oh, well…I told my friends I went snowboarding, but I didn’t tell them about the singing thing. Gabriella Too much for them to handle? Troy It was cool. But, my friends – that’s not what I do. That was like a different person. Gabriella Pretty crazy, right, meeting up again like this? Troy

Hey, I was gonna call you…like a bunch of times – Gabriella And? Troy (embasrassed) And, you know, I mean, like, well, I mean --- Gabriella You chickened out. Troy Kinda. (Pause. Troy blushes. Gabriella smiles at the thought that he was scared to call her.) Gabriella Cool. Troy and Gabriella look at the bulletin board, where the audition sign up sheets for Juliet and Romeo are posted. Behind them, the ever-eavesdropping Sharpay listens to their conversation. Troy Hey…now that you’ve met Darbus the Deranged, I’ll bet you can’t wait to sign up for the show. Gabriella (laughs) I won’t be signing up for anything here for a while. I just want to get to know the school. But if you signed up, I would consider coming to the show.

Scene #3 Coach Bolton and Ms. Darbus

Coach Bolton Chad and Troy are my two star players – you can’t have them acting like idiots when they should be at practice! Ms. Darbus They were not acting like idiots, they were acting like actors! If Troy and Chad were theatre performers instead of athletes, would you seek preferential treatment for them? I think not. Coach Bolton Darbus, we are days away from the biggest game of the year. Ms. Darbus And we are in the midst of auditions for our winter musical. This school is about more than sweaty young men in baggy shorts flinging balls for buckets. Coach Bolton Baskets. The West High Knights have knocked us out of the playoffs for three years. Ms. Darbus Yes, and despite your consistent track record of defeat, the school board still sees fit to allocate ten times the amount of money for school athletics as it does for the arts programs. Coach Bolton Win, lose, it doesn’t matter. I’m trying to teach these kids about having a goal, about teamwork, something they can use as adults. Ms. Darbus (seeing some possible common ground) Which is precisely what I am trying to instill in them. Coach Bolton (not taking the bait) How, by making them scream at the top of their lungs?!? Ms. Darbus Philistine! Coach Bolton Crack pot! (Words finally failing her, Ms. Darbus bangs her gong in Coach Bolton’s face. He blows his whistle in her face.)

Scene #4 - Sharpay’s locker Wednesday, 12:30 pm Zeke and Sharpay

(Still covered in cake, Sharpay pulls out blouse after blouse from hangers in her locker. She checks them out in her full length mirror on the inside of the locker door.) Zeke Hey, Sharpay. Now that Troy is going to be in your show --- Sharpay Troy Bolton is not in my show! Zeke Oh, uhm, well, okay…I mean, did you like the cake I made for you? Sharpay No. It doesn’t go with my pants. Zeke Ha ha, that’s funny. So, uhm, anyway, I thought maybe you would like to come to see me play ball sometime…. Sharpay I’d rather suck the mucus from a dog’s nostrils ‘til his skull caves in. (Sharpay brushes Zeke aside as she goes off to change to her blouse.) Zeke That doesn’t sound very appetizing. (calling after her) Wouldn’t you prefer a nice crème brulee? Or maybe some tartufo? Tiramisu? (beat) Tiramisu? Why did I say Tiramisu? Aarrgghhh! (Zeke runs off.)

Scene #5 - Study Hall - Wednesday, 1:00pm Taylor and Chad

(The school bell rings) (Lights up on the Jocks and the Brainiacs sitting together in a summit meeting. Much murmuring and debate going on.) Taylor You really think that’s going to work? Chad It’s the only way to save Troy and Gabriella from themselves (Taylor looks at the Brainiacs. After a brief hesitation, they nod in unison.) Taylor What you’re saying is the individual must be sacrificed for the good of the whole? That’s so very Karl Marx. (beat) Works for me. Chad We’ll get Troy in the locker room. You guys nab Gabriella in the lab at exactly sixteen hundred hours. Taylor Whatever. Just work him until he --- Chad Troy Bolton is my best friend – I know how to push all his buttons. Remember, the line of communication is crucial to the successful deployment of this covert operation. Taylor (looks at him with fresh eyes) I didn’t know you could say that many syllables together in one sentence. I’m impressed. Chad Thanks…been working on it all night. My watch says thirteen hundred hours, mountain standard time. Are we synchronized? Taylor Save it for Charlie’s Angels, Chad. (smiles) Au revoir, mon ami. (Taylor and the Brainiacs get up to leave.)

Scene #6 Sharpay and Ryan

(Sharpay and Ryan rehearse the choreography for their callback; the boom box plays their accompaniment. They are working their butts off. Suddenly, Ryan throws in his signature jazz square and stomps on Sharpay’s foot.) Sharpay You idiot! (Ryan turns off the boom box.) What did I tell you about those stupid jazz squares? Ryan Everyone loves a good jazz square – it’s a classic. And why do we always have to do what you say? Sharpay Maybe because I know what I’m doing? Just do what I tell you. I’m not taking any chances, understand? That role is mine! I was born to play it! Ryan Somebody in this room ought to chill out, sister. And it ain’t me. We’ll get the roles we want, we always do. Sharpay I’m not talking about my role in the play, Ryan. I’m talking about my role in like…the school. I’m not a jock, I’m not a Brainiac…but you know what, I’m the star – that’s my role. And if they take that away from me, who am I? Ryan Well…you could just be Sharpay. That’s not so bad, is it? Sharpay Are you brain-dead? Noone is going to like me if I’m just Sharpay! But on stage, I can be Juliet, I can be Annie Oakley, I can be anyone I want to be, not just dumb old Sharpay. I need something to make me fabulous Ryan. I mean, come on, they named me after a flabby dog! Ryan Sharpay, we’ve had the leads every year since birth. If we get it again, great. If not, we’ll still be fabulous. Besides, it could be worse. They could’ve named you Pug…or Shih Tzu… or -- Sharpay But Troy and that…that thing!

Ryan Look, maybe Troy would like you more if you were just yourself, for once. Sharpay Pardon me, Dr, Phil, but what do you know? You’re just a kid. Ryan I’m only eight minutes younger than you Sharpay Yeah, well, those are eight important minutes. (Troy suddenly barges into the room looking for Gabriella, cell phone in hand.)
