SCHOLAR ATHLETE WINNERS

Our fall sports season recently came to an end, and once again our athletic teams had successful seasons. Thanks to all of our student athletes and coaches for all of their efforts both on the “field” and in the classroom during the fall season. I am pleased to say that over 56% of our fall athletes earned a 3.5 or high-er during the first grading period. This is quite an impressive feat when you consider how much time and en-ergy is spent outside of school preparing for contests. This is yet another example of our mantra - We ARE SC! We would like to recognize the Scholar Athlete Award winners listed below who won medallions for earning the highest grade point average on their respective teams this fall. (Please note that a student can receive this award only once during his/her career at SHS.) The 2017 Fall Sport Scholar Athletes are: Boys Cross Country - Joseph Feng ▪ Girls Cross Country - Vivian Jiang ▪ Boys Soccer - David Tan ▪ Girls Soccer - Mariana Silvestri ▪ Girls Tennis - Samantha Rosen ▪ Boys Golf - Benjamin Grossman - Girls Golf - Sandy Deng ▪ Football - Nicholas Close ▪ Football Cheer-leader - Maggie Brown ▪ Volleyball - McKenna Podracky - Trainer - Arlyn Gray

We will compete in our first invitational of the season on December 9 at Sylvania-Northview, near Toledo. We will be taking two teams of 15 students each to Sylvania-Northview to compete. The students are a mix of experienced SO and new to SO students. They will compete in 23 events. This is very early in the season and we will use this invitational to gain experience for everyone before we head into our main competition season which has an invitational every weekend from January 6 through March 3. GOTCHA!

Teachers and staff award a “GOTCHA” card when students display Comet P.R.I.D.E (Personal Responsi-bility, Respect, Integrity, Discipline of Self, Empathy). The students turn the cards into the GOTCHA box located on the wall by the front security desk. Drawings are held and prizes are distributed weekly. Congratulations to the GOTCHA winners for the month of November: Week of November 3 Week of November 10 Week of November 17 Yan Chen Izzy Appl e Chenghan Chen Katie Schuman Isaiah Blanchard Anamiku Gautam Lexi Walter John Cha Gina Uguccini

Congratulations also to staff members and Sarah Burgess, Amanda Somerville and Paul Diehl who were awarded a GOTCHA prize in November.

GIRL UP - FILL THIS HOUSE

Girl Up partnered with DAPs, Key Club, Random Acts of Kindness, and Youth for Christ during the week of November 27 to raise goods and funds for Fill this House. This organization helps kids aging out of foster care. These kids often are forced out of their foster homes during their senior years of high school with little more than a dehumanizing garbage bag of minor possessions. Fill this House provides furnished apartments for these students so they can finish school and go to college. Fill this House includes brand new items as many of these kids have never owned anything brand new. We are thrilled to share with this group to help these students so that they might have a successful future.

GIRL UP - PURA VIDA

Girl Up will also be holding a Pura Vida bracelet fundraiser the week of December 11. The proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the School Cycle program through the Girl Up national organization. The School Cy-cle program provides bicycles to girls in developing countries so that they might have a chance to attend school. Young girls are often the ones in charge of fetching water for their families. These journeys can take most of the day and leave little opportunity for these girls to go to school. Since their prospects often only in-clude marriage and children, their families see little need for these girls to even need an education. The School Cycle program helps these girls get water quickly and still get to school. Please consider buying a bracelet as a holiday gift for a loved one while supporting a very important initiative. CAP AND GOWN ORDERS

Attention Senior Parents: If your son or daughter did NOT turn in their order/payment, please contact the Jostens representative, John Armstrong, at [email protected] or order online using the information your senior brought home. In order for your son or daughter to participate in the Commencement ceremonies, seniors must wear a cap and gown. If you are planning to use an older sibling’s cap and gown, please remember that boys wear blue and girls wear white. The only item you would need is a cap and tassel and these items can be ordered from Jostens. If you have any additional questions please email me at [email protected]. Thank you, Jane Langston, Senior Class Advisor [email protected].

INFO SNAP: ANNUAL EMERGENCY CONTACT AND INFORMATION UPDATE

Students who have not yet completed their 2017/2018 emergency forms online will not be able to attend any field trip scheduled for a class or for any sporting events. There was an email and also a letter sent home with information to log-in to the InfoSnap system that allows you to update your emergency card information. If you have questions please contact Tammy Strom at [email protected].

SENIOR PROJECT

The administrators met with the senior class in August. One of the items discussed was Senior Project. This program provides seniors with real-life experiences in their career choices. For ten days in May, partici-pating seniors will “shadow” one mentor in a field in which the students have shown interest. During this time, they will gain an understanding of the practical nature of the professional world – an experience that will pro-vide the necessary drive to succeed in college. More information will be distributed in January, but we’d like you to be aware of some important details now. For a senior to be eligible to go on Senior Project, the student must:

Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0

Be passing all current classes in preparation for graduation

Have no out-of-school suspensions during senior year

Have no more than 7 days of absences during senior year

Students need to find their own placement. A list of possible on-site sponsors is available now in the main office. The last day of school for seniors who participate in Senior Project is May 4. These seniors will be ex-empt from final exams.

MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS ONLINE!

All morning announcements are posted online daily on the SHS page of the Solon Schools website (solonschools.org/SHS). Click on “Students” then “Morning Announcements”. Club meetings are also post-ed under “Students” and then “Clubs/Activities”. The faculty advisor will keep their club updated on the web-site.

2018 SENIOR SPIRIT

The 2018 Senior Spirit Wear will be available for purchase online from November 3 through December 15. All orders will be processed over Winter Break. It will take approximately 3-4 weeks to completer the orders. All orders will be packed individually. An email will be sent out to notify people that the orders are complete and that they can be picked up at Rube Adler’s store in Solon.

SCHOOL COUNSELING NEWS A Newsletter for the Students and Parents of Solon High School

Editor: Cindy Russell December, 2017

DECEMBER IS FULL OF COUNSELING ACTIVITIES

FOR SOLON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND FAMILIES

The following are reminders:

Seniors

Attend the Parent-Student Financial Aid Meeting on December 7, at 6:30 p.m., in the Lecture Hall Continue to complete college applications. Pay attention to college deadlines for admissions, financial aid

and scholarships. Remember to indicate "I've Applied" and "Request Transcripts" via Naviance. Allow your Counselor two weeks to process transcripts. December 6th is the deadline to submit your tran-

script request in Naviance for college applications due January 1st. Some colleges/universities require a mid-year transcript. Email your counselor to request a transcript be

sent. Make sure you include the name of the college/university in the email. Some students taking AP courses choose to also take the SAT II Subject Test in June through the College

Board. SAT II Subject Tests are often recommended or required by highly selective colleges and universi-ties. Check the college/university admission websites to determine if SAT IIs are recommended or re-quired for the schools you may consider for admission.

Complete the FAFSA. Most universities require a FAFSA to receive a financial package.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Now that letters of recommendation have been completed, has your senior sent a hand-written thank-you note to his/her teacher? A considerable amount of time is spent in writing meaningful letters that reflect the student's assets and potential for success at the college level. Please encourage your senior to follow through on this important gesture. A simple "thank you" really means a lot!

Juniors

Parents and students complete the Junior Jump-Start Section II documents and return them to the Coun-seling Office by January 5.***

ACT and/or the SAT I are usually taken by juniors at least once in the spring. Students should register on the testing websites: ACT at www.actstudent.org and SAT at www.collegeboard.org. Remember to regis-ter as soon as possible if you would like to test at Solon High School. Our testing site fills up very quickly.

Students on an IEP or 504 Plan need to see your interventionist/counselor to initiate the request for test-ing accommodations.

Sophomores

Excel TECC Timeline 2017-2018

December 12, 2017 – Opportunity Day Field Trip (8:40 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) Students will visit two

programs of choice at the Excel TECC Career Consortium at Mayfield High School. Parents can visit the programs at night from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at Mayfield High School. Also, students who missed the field trip can visit with their parents on this night.

When students come back from the field trip, which will be approximately 11:30 a.m., they will go to the lecture hall with Mr. Nowak and Mrs. Simecek and be given Excel TECC application packets. We will review interviewing skills necessary for Interview Day in January, as well. Students will eat lunch 5B then follow the rest of their schedule.

December 19, 2017 – All Excel TECC applications MUST be submitted online by December 19. Stu-

dents must also turn in the Parental Acceptance Form AND the Field Trip Permission Form for Interview Day to the Guidance Office by December 19, 2017.

Excel TECC information is also available on the SHS Counseling webpage.

Sophomores and Freshmen

Be aware of the academic, social, and extracurricular opportunities available. Participation makes high school a more rewarding experience.

Pre-ACT results will be shared with 9th graders. PSAT results will be shared with 10th graders. Sopho-mores and freshmen will also meet with our career specialist through English or History classes this year to continue college and career research.

All Students

The end of the 1st semester is December 20. Exams will be held December 18, 19 and 20. Midterm ex-ams are a new experience for most freshman. It is important to study for these exams. The exam grade and the two nine-week grades are used to calculate the semester grade for year-long courses and the final grade for one semester courses. Please refer to the Student/Parent Handbook, located on the SHS website, for grade calculation details.

Advanced Placement Exams

Students enrolled in an AP course are required to take the AP exam for that course in May. The fee for each exam is $94 (Seminar Exam cost $142). Checks should be made payable to Solon Board of Education. The fee is due by March 2 to the Solon High School Bookstore or can be mailed to the bookstore at 33600 Inwood Road, Solon, Ohio 44139. Please direct questions to Mrs. Kinney at (440)349-7307, [email protected]. If a student is on an IEP or 504 Plan and would like to apply to the testing companies for accommodations, please see their interventionist/counselor to initiate this process.

WHAT TO DO WHILE WAITING FOR ADMISSION LETTERS

The hard part starts once you've submitted your college applications – The Waiting Game. For the weeks, often months that follow you will feel the stress of the infamous college waiting game as anxiety builds and the days go by without a letter of reply. But a little guidance and a heads up about what to expect can help you play that game like a pro. The following are responses to frequently asked questions from admissions counselors across the country.

How do I know the university has received my application?

You should receive an acknowledgement E-mail that your application has been received. If you apply online, you should get this E-mail within a day or two. When it hits your in box, make sure that all information entered on the application (name, home address, etc.) is correct. Don't hesitate to call the admissions office if you accidentally entered the wrong information or if you don't get the E-mail at all. Every school's admission guidelines vary, so be sure to review the admissions requirements online before and after you turn in your application to avoid delaying the time it takes for them to consider your application.

How can I check the status of my application, and how often should I check it?

Most colleges have status checks through their undergraduate admissions offices website. The confirma-tion that tells you they have received your application usually will have a website login and password so only you can see at what stage of the process your application is. Receipts of transcripts, letters of recommenda-tion, and test scores are sometimes noted on these status pages, so check back regularly to make sure the required parts of your application have arrived.

How are admissions decisions made?

There are so many factors that go into colleges' decision-making process that it's hard to ever really be certain about why any particular applicant gets accepted. Larger schools often break applicants into geo-graphical sections and assign one or two people to inspect the applications from that region. Smaller schools might employ a board of admissions counselors who make the final cuts. In addition to your transcripts, es-says, references, and everything else you've slaved over to meet the application deadline, admissions officers receive a high school profile with information about our school's test scores, curriculum, and college ac-ceptance history, among other things, to better judge whether you are well suited for their college's academic intensity.

What should I do in the meantime?

It's easy to become an application-status stalker as you count down the days until you know if you got in, but this in-between period is also a good time to alert the universities of changes or additions to your files. You also should use time to wrap up campus visits and do additional research on each school so that you can make more informed decisions once the acceptance (and rejection) letters start to roll in.

When will I find out if I got in or not?

If you applied for early decision you will most likely be notified before New Year's rolls around. Although you should check the university's website for its specific dates, if you apply for regular decision you will know by at least the beginning of April.

Do I have to wait for a letter in the mail to know if I got in or not or will I find out online?

Many colleges send decisions electronically and follow up with a letter of reply.

What if I'm wait-listed?

If you're wait-listed, you should be informed by that college what your chances are for being admitted and the date you will receive final word. You may be asked to call the admissions office or declare online whether you wish to stay on the list or be removed for good. What if I am accepted to one of my safety schools before I hear from one of my top choices, and the safety

school needs a response?

You don't have to respond to a school right away, but your commitments to admission and financial aid offers should be given to the schools by the end of April. If you need more time, give the college a written re-quest for an extension. This is one of the biggest decisions of your life, and colleges understand that. Make sure you give yourself enough time to weigh all the options.

ATTENTION PARENTS!! PLEASE VERIFY YOUR STUDENT’S NAME FOR THEIR DIPLOMA!!

Please verify the spelling and completeness of the student’s name. If corrections need to be made, contact Jen Machado in the Counseling Office no later than Wednesday, December 20, 2017 by email at

[email protected] or by phone at (440) 349-7304.

SHS PTA Newsletter

December, 2017

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As 2017 comes to an end, I want to thank everyone for all they have done for the PTA, the students and the staff at Solon High School this year. Your support, whether it is volunteer time, contributions/donations, and/or membership, is very much appreciated. I also would like to wish your family a safe, healthy and happy holiday season and new year. We will not have a PTA meeting in the month of December. The next PTA meeting is Tuesday, January 23 at 9:15 a.m. in the Board of Education conference room. Please join us if you can. Good luck to all students during Mid-term exams December 18, 19 and 20. The SHS PTA Coffee and Snack Bar will be open each day before, during, and after midterms. Have your student stop by the Coffee Bar to “fuel up” before and/or after their exams. All proceeds fund the George Steyer scholarships for SHS seniors. Donna Thomas SHS PTA President

THANK YOU!

Thank you to the following who helped with the framing of the National Merit students photographs: Cindy Beasley Grant, Richelle McCoy, Lori Abraham, Cheryl Kresevic, Dawn Haynes, Heather Ferris, Holly Baker, and Judy Kontul. We labeled and framed 53 photographs. Feel free to take a look at the photographs of these outstanding students. They will be displayed on the walls outside the auditorium for the remainder of the school year. Thanks to Denise Cipriano and Paula Telepak who organized the best PTA Holiday Gift Boutique on No-vember 11. Thanks also to Suzi Castiglione who coordinated the volunteers and to Jody Halley who handled refreshments. And thanks to all our parent volunteers, SADD student volunteers, and Key Club student vol-unteers who helped set-up on Friday and worked on Saturday. Thanks also to those who shopped the event. Thank you Erin Short for your support and thanks to the custodians for all their help. And a special shout out to Denise’s family and Paula’s family who were there working from 7:00 a.m. until it was over on Saturday. The holiday boutique was a huge success. We had 786 paid admissions and 118 vendors. We received a lot of positive feedback from the vendors about the boutique and about our great volunteers. Thank you to Tracey Lavine for her work on the SHS/PTA student directory. Thank you also to Pam Hes-keth in the SHS office. Look for upcoming notices so you know when the directories will be sent home with your student.

December 2: Mattress sale 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. - SHS band room

December 4: SMP meeting in the high school band room!!! Come see what exciting things we have planned

for the new year 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday December 5: Holiday orchestra concert 7:00 p.m. in the SHS auditorium

Wednesday December 6: Holiday Band concert 7:00 p.m. in the SHS auditorium

Thursday December 14: Holiday Choral concert 7:00 p.m. in the SHS auditorium

The Bands and Orchestras have been extremely busy getting and learning their new holiday music. If you have never been to a band concert you are in for a treat. The music is amazing and there are always little surprises along the way. I remember attending my first Solon High School band concert as a freshman band parent 2 years ago. I was amazed to see fog and a light show while the band played one of their songs. Grab your family members and enjoy one of the many concerts we have coming up. You will not be disap-pointed. Also, our SMP meeting this month will be Monday December 4 at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there. SMP is going social!!!
