Precautions on Installation

Please ensure you have confirmed the following prior to installing the Mini Speed PTZ Camera:

• Follow all local safety regulations

• If connecting optional accessories, please make sure they are compatible and in complete working order. For a full list of optional accessories, visit www.lorexcctv.com

• Check if the installation location is strong enough to support the camera and bracket without immediate danger of falling.

Cable Standards

Coaxial Cable

Select the proper cable length for your installation distance. The maximum recommended lengths are as follows:

• RG59/U: 750ft (230 meters)

• RG61/U: 1000ft (305 meters)

• RG11/U: 1500ft (457 meters)

RS485 Cable

Please comply with RS485 wiring standards when connecting RS485 cables. Improper connections may result in transmission errors which may cause speed dome cameras to react incorrectly.

If you use thin or low anti-interference RS485 cable when connecting the camera, the maximum transmission distance may be shortened.

Standard rule for RS485 transmission distance:

When using 20AWG(Belden 8760) Shielded Twisted Pair Cable, different control Baud Rates will have different transmission distance performance:

2400 1200 meters / 3937 feet

4800 1000 meters / 3281 feet

9600 800 meters / 2625 feet

Baud Rate Maximum Transmission Distance

Installing the Camera

Installing the Camera

There are two methods of installing the Mini Speed Dome Camera*: cable pass-through, or visible cable.

Prior to installing the camera, make sure of the following:

• You have powered-on the camera to run the automatic Self-Test (see Camera Self-Testpage iv)

• You have connected the camera to a TV, DVR, keyboard controller, or observation system(not included) to check the video signal and RS-485 connection to ensure the camera, TV, DVR, keyboard controller, or observation system are functioning properly

Cable Pass-ThroughThe cable pass-through method involves drilling a hole in the mounting surface large enough for the BNC/RS-485/Power cable to pass-through. This method conceals the cable from view and prevents tampering.

To install the camera:

1. Drill an opening in your mounting surface large enough for the cables to pass through—approximetaly 2 cm/0.79 in in diameter.

2. With the pass-through hole drilled in the mounting surface, feed the BNC/RS485/Power cable through the hole.

3. Feed the BNC/RS485/Power cable through the large hole of the included mounting plate.

4. Fasten the mounting plate to to the surface using the included mounting screws.

5. Connect the serial port of the BNC/RS485/Power cable firmly to the port on the base of the camera.

6. Place the camera on the mounting plate, making sure to line up the arrow on the base of the camera with the arrow on the plate. The camera should be flush against the mounting plate.

7. Turn the base of the camera clockwise until it clicks into place.

Installing the Camera

Visible CableThe visible cable method leaves the cable extending from the camera to the DVR, monitor, or observation system. This method is suggested if drilling a pass-through hole is not a viable option for installation.

To install the camera:

1. Fasten the mounting plate to the surface using the included mounting screws.

2. Secure the serial port of the BNC/RS485/Power cable firmly to the port on the base of the camera.

3. Tuck the cable into either of the slots in the base of the camera as best suits your wiring or mounting environment.

4. Place the camera on the mounting plate, making sure to line up the arrow on the base of the camera with the arrow on the plate. The camera should be flush against the mounting plate.

5. Turn the base of the camera clockwise until it clicks into place.

Installing the Camera

For both installation methods, double-check that the Mini Speed Dome Camera is firmly in place to prevent any risk of it falling down.

Electrical TestOnce the camera is mounted, connect the cables. If the camera is connected correctly and receiving sufficient power, it will automatically execute the Self-Test: the camera will tilt up/down, pan horizontally, and stop at Preset Point 1. The camera is now ready for normal operation.

RS-485 Wiring

There are two methods for wiring an RS-485 connection: Serial and Aster. Use either of these recommended wiring methods to prevent malfunction of RS-485 control.

RS-485 Serial ConnectionThis method connects speed dome cameras in a sequential manner where the first camera connects to the second, the second to the third, and so on. A terminal resistance is connected to the last camera to form a closed loop.

Figure 3.0 Serial connection method

When using a serial connection, you can connect a maximum of 32 PTZ dome cameras; if you need to connect more than 32 cameras, you should use the aster connection method.

Installing the Camera

RS-485 Aster ConnectionThis is the most common method in practical installation of PTZ cameras. In an Aster Connection, you need to use a RS-485 distributor to reduce interferance and stabilize the connections.

Figure 3.1 Aster connection method

Note: Without a RS-485 distributor, you risk causing a malfunction of the control signal or basic camera opeations

Connecting the Camera

Connecting the Camera

The Mini Speed Dome Camera works on a BNC channel of most DVRs and observation systems. Please refer to your observation system’s instruction manual for details on available channels for PTZ functionality.

To connect the camera:

1. With the camera securely mounted, connect the three terminating ends of the BNC/RS-485/Power cable to the 65 ft. BNC/RS-485/Power Extension Cable.

2. Connect the three terminating ends of the 65 ft. BNC/RS-485/Power Extension Cable to the following:

• BNC: Connect to a BNC port on the DVR or observation system

• RS485: Connect the terminating wires to the RS-485 port on the DVR, keyboard controller, or observation system (white=positive +, black=negative —)

Note: DVR, keyboard controller, or observation system must support a Pelco-D/P protocol.

• Power: Connect to the included DC power adaptor.

3. Turn on the DVR or observation system.

• Connect to Power Adaptor

• Connect to BNC input

• Connect to RS-485 ports

Changing the Camera Address Settings

Changing the Camera Address Settings

The DIP switches inside the camera (1~10) can be changed to set a unique address for the camera (between 1~255). By default, the camera is set to channel 1.

• If using a single camera, the address does not need to be changed. Refer to the Hardware Manual for the Observation System for camera channel placement and configuration.

• If using multiple cameras, each camera must be set to a unique address using the internal DIP switches. See Figure 5.0

Note: Make sure the camera is powered off before changing the DIP switches.

To access the DIP switches:

1. Open the soft plastic cover on the back of the camera. A 10-pin DIP switch, SW9/10 is visible.

Appendix 2: Troubleshooting

Appendix 2: Troubleshooting

Error Possible Causes Solutions

Camera runs Self-Test when first powered on, but cannot be controlled

• Keyboard or DVR communication protocol is not the same as that of the camera

• Make sure protocols on keyboard or DVR match those of the camera

• Keyboard or DVR communication baud rate is not the same as that of the camera

• Make sure baud rates on keyboard or DVR match those of the camera

• RS485 polarity error (positive and negative wires are switched)

• Switch polarity of RS485 wires

• RS485 faulty wiring connection • Check RS485 wiring

Camera control is working, but not smoothly

• Mainframe is too far from camera

• Check wires for error and/or set terminal resistance at the last camera

• RS485 has a disconnected wire • Reconnect RS485 wire

• Too many cameras are paralleled in a series

• Install an RS485 distributor

Camera is powered on, but there is no video output

• Power adaptor may be not firmly connected to outlet

• Check the connection between the power adaptor and the outlet

• The voltage from the outlet is too low

• Check that the voltage to the camera is 12V DC; if not, use an adaptor that is no more than 12V ±10%, otherwise it will overload the camera
