Google(Bing/browser of choice) more about this sad time of remembrance in our Hebrew calendar. Tisha B’Av is followed by Tu (15

th) B’Av, a day of

communal celebration, and some would say it is the equivalent of Valentine’s Day and is celebrated as a day of love. It was normally the beginning of the grape harvest. “The Talmud explains that the daughters of Israel used to dress in white and go out to the vineyards and dance. Young unmarried men would follow after them in the hope of finding a bride!” Lastly, during the month of Av, we say goodbye to the numerical book (B’Midbar-literally in the wilderness/desert/Numbers) of the counting of the people, blessing and curses, and the passing of leadership from Moses, to Aaron, to Joshua as the dream began in (Vayikra-Leviticus) and became a reality in Numbers. We begin the final book of the Bible, Deuteronomy as we head towards the High Holidays! This is Moses’ final discourse as the children of Israel after 40 years in the Desert are finally going to make it to the “Promised Land”. Imagine waiting 40 years for your dreams to come true. Imagine the exhilaration, the excitement, yet the sadness of a generation who left Egypt and would not have the chance to make it there. With happiness, comes being grounded, humility, and growth! The children of Israel are no longer slaves, but a “Free” people who will go to the land Promised to them by G-d. Adon Olam, Master of the Universe, may we all continue to remember not only where we came from but the direction we are going. Through our failures we learn, grow, and have successes. Although there are many paths to doing mitzvot for others, let’s remember to do so with happiness, love, hope, and with a pure heart. The ultimate fun here is that we are serving the One who makes it all possible. Have a memorable August!! Next month, Heshbon HaNefesh! “Check” please! See you soon!

President’s Message

uring our tour of Israel, our tour guide, Sara Goldsmith, spoke of many unique facts of the land, people, their industries, etc. With that I looked up some facts of Israel that you may not know. Here are some… Israel is the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net gain in its number of trees. Since the JNF starts about 120 years ago, they planted 270 million trees, plus the 30 we planted on our trip. The JNF-KKL owns 13% of the land in Israel.

Israel has the third highest rate of entrepreneurship among women and people over 55 in the entire world. Israel is only 1/6 of 1% of the landmass of the Middle East. Israel Invented this….it’s an Anti-Date rape straw was invented in Israel. It’s designed to detect date rape drugs when placed in a beverage and alerts the victim. With more than 3,000 high-tech companies and start-ups, Israel has the highest concentration of hi-tech companies in the world (apart from the Silicon Valley)

Did you know the flash drive is an Israel invention. When Golda Meir became prime minister of Israel in 1969, she was only the third woman elected to lead a country in the modern world. The Sea of Galilee — located .212 km below sea level — is the lowest freshwater lake in the world (and the largest in Israel).

The Dead Sea being 1410 feet below sea level is the lowest place on Earth. Israel is one of only three democracies in the world without a codified constitution. The glue on Israeli stamps is kosher. Israel is the only country to revive an unspoken language and establish it as its national tongue! Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives is the world’s oldest continuously used cemetery. Occupied East Jerusalem? Jewish neighborhoods built in the late 1970s and early 1980s such as Gilo, Ramot, French Hill, and Pisgat Ze’ev, as well as the newer Har Homa area, completed in 2005. Today, there are about 200,000 Jews and 270,000 Arabs living in Jerusalem territory that had been annexed by Jordan until 1967.

El Al, Israel’s national airline, set the world record for the most passengers on a commercial flight. The world’s largest

pepper was grown in Israel’s Moshav Ein Yahav, as recorded by The Guinness Book of World Records in 2013. Life expectancy at birth in Israel is at 82 years (two years more than the OECD average). Israel’s national bird is the hoopoe! Heart tissue regeneration is possible in the U.S. thanks to Israeli stem-cell technology. An Israeli company has developed the world’s first jellyfish repellent. Israel is one of only nine countries in the world that can launch its own satellites into space. Israeli scientists have discovered the cause of chronic bad breath and an easy way to fix it! More than 44% of all lawyers registered in Israel are women!

PRESIDENT’S ARTICLE cont’d from page 3

Israel has the world’s second highest per capita of new books. Israel’s national flower is the Cyclamen persicum. An Israeli inventor has developed the world’s first cardboard bicycle from recycled materials. The bike is resistant to rain and sun, and costs around $9 each. Israeli engineers and agriculturalists developed a revolutionary drip irrigation system to minimize the amount of water used to grow crops.

Israel has the highest average living standards in the Middle East. The per capita income in 2000 was over $17,500, exceeding that of the UK. Relative to its population, Israel is the largest immigrant-absorbing nation on earth. Immigrants come in search of democracy, religious freedom, and economic opportunity. Israel is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East!

Information from the Security Committee

In an effort to provide our synagogue family with updated information about our Security, Joan Jacobs will be our contact.

Please notify Joan Jacobs if you’ve had recent CPR training (within the last 2 years). The Security Committee is compiling a list of CBS Members who can help with first aid, if needed. We need volunteers who are willing to take a new training, called “STOP THE BLEED.” Contact Joan Jacobs if you’re interested or for additional information about the training. The CBS Security Committee is currently working on earthquake safety.

When you come to services, you will hear information about what to do in case of an earthquake at CBS, in addition to information about fire and active shooter safety. The front doors are locked for your safety. With the help of the Board of Directors, we are upgrading our locks, outdoor lighting and security systems. We will be upgrading our first aid kits within the next few months.

SAVE THE DATE SUNDAY,

FEBRUARY 9, 2020

You are invited to participate more in Friday Night Services!

Do you… Like the music, but can’t quite get the words? Know the words but believe you don’t sing well enough? Have a favorite prayer or melody that you would like us to read or sing?

At Congregation Beth Shalom we have a unique opportunity to make our services be what WE want them to be.

While a certain structure has to be followed, there are lots of options and our Friday Night Siddur gives us many choices of prayers to read and/or chant.

Yeah? What’s it gonna cost me—$0

And the hidden monthly fees? - $0

And I have to obligate myself to? Only what you are comfortable doing.

So, how about it? Give us a chance to prove how fulfilling an Erev Shabbat service can be.

Please send an e-mail to Joan Zak at [email protected] and I will add you to the list.

There is absolutely NO Cost or obligation to be placed on the list.

Pictured to the left is Michele Schulman and Chelsea Williams assisting RJ Spiegel and Tzipporah Whittemore as the prepare

for Erev Shabbat Services. Photo taken prior to Shabbat.

We love having our Pre– and Post-B’nai Mitzvah students lead services, and don’t want to leave the rest of you feeling there is no time that you can experience what they do.

Would you like to feel more included in the service? Do you sometimes think “I could do that too and it would be fun!”

Family night services which occur on the first Friday of the month will still begin at 6:30 PM. However, there will no longer be an oneg at 5:45. Instead we will serve wine and challah at the end of services and then whoever is

interested will join everyone for dinner at a local restaurant chosen that evening. We have been enjoying these dinners for a number of years. It is a great way to enjoy the Shabbat experience with our synagogue family.

RITUAL Report

On Sunday, June 23 we provided a Meal of Condolence at the synagogue for the Barkan family on the death of Elliott Barkan. It was attended by family, friends, and synagogue members. I want to thank the following people for their generous help bringing food and helping to set up and clean up: Joan Zak, Sandra Shulman, Joan Jacobs, Gail Koren, and Felix Smith for leading the shiva service. The Chesed Committee is an important part of our synagogue. Every member of the synagogue is a member of the Chesed Committee. We are there to provide “deeds of loving kindness”. The Ritual Committee is providing meals for the Bilgrei family to help them out while Sol is in a rehab facility. High Holiday packets are in your email. Please note deadlines for the memorial book as well as the Break-the-Fast meal and extra High Holiday tickets. Shabbat Under the Stars will take place on September 6 at our home. Dinner will be served at 6:00 PM and services will begin at 7:00. Reservations must be made to me by August 30 if you wish to join us for dinner. The cost will be $5.00 a person and $20.00 maximum per immediate family living in your home. Nonmembers will be $10.00 per person and $40.00 maximum per immediate family living in your home. Please contact me for reservations. Jackie Williams Ritual Chairperson 714-296-8049 [email protected]

I hope that all of our students, staff, and , teachers are having a nice summer break. During my summer break Bruce and I went on a group trip to Israel. It was quite an adventure. We went to so many places. I want to share a special place that we visited with all of you. In Jerusalem we visited a place where on five days each week , the elderly create Judaica items for sale . It is called Yad La Kashish..

EDUCATION Report

We had the opportunity to watch these folks work in their workshops. We were able to talk with them and ask a few questions. Some spoke English. In the gift shop you were able to see

the finished products. It was amazing. The shopping was so much fun. They create beautiful items. In addition to their interesting work routine of a half day, five

days per week, this facility provides these folks with a pleasant environment to be in. There are also financial benefits, such as a stipend and

a free lunch. The elderly that work there have a purpose and we all need that. Marci Rouman Education Director

Supporting Wendy Supporting Wendy Supporting Wendy CBS member, Wendy Izenman recently diagnosed with breast cancer—has been strong in attitude and handling this horrific news. Let’s face it, hearing the words: “you have cancer” is shocking enough, fortunately the support and love from many are reaching out to Wendy and others with cancer. On July 4, Wendy shaved her head, showing support and love she was joined by CBS members Joshua Spiegel and his nephew RJ Spiegel (and others). Their efforts are extending to a local cancer walk called Combat Cancer on October 19, by the local non-profit Support Sisterz. The walk will begin at Norco College—JFK Middle College High School. Registration at 7am, Opening ceremony is 8:30am, and the Walk Kickoff is at 9am. CBS member Rachel Spiegel is involved with the planning of the overall walk and is seeking walkers,

sponsors and volunteers. Anyone interested in this community outreach, please connect with Rachel at 951.751.4929
