Dear parents and caregivers, As the year draws to an end, I would like to acknowledge the tremendous contribution

our students have made to the school in a vast number of areas. They are inspirational

and there isn’t a day that passes by when I don’t feel privileged to work alongside

incredibly talented young people.

Recently, we held our Senior Honours ceremony and it was pleasing to award a number

of our senior students with Howick College Awards. These awards are one of the most

prestigious and recognise Y13 students who have unselfishly invested themselves in the

school. Through their attitude and actions they have reflected everything that is

positive about us as a caring learning community. We also announced our top academic

scholar, Jac-Wye Chan who deservedly achieved the highest level of academic success

throughout the college. His commitment to his studies was justly rewarded. As a first for

the College, we also recognised the value of leadership potential in our school and

consequently we appointed 27 outstanding student leaders who will provide strong

student led direction to many areas of school life. As part of this new approach, we also

announced our inaugural Head Boy and Head Girl for 2018. Nathan Limm and Inka

Pleiss have consistently shown themselves to be highly effective, articulate and

competent leaders throughout their time at Howick and will again add significant value.

I also acknowledge our juniors who have succeeded. Congratulations to our junior

‘Howick College Honours’ recipients and to our junior scholar of the year, Ethan

McCormick. It is encouraging to know that we have such depth coming through and that

we continue to nurture high calibre students to success.

To all our students whether you ‘crossed the stage’ or not, I congratulate you.

Your commitment and contribution to the college is acknowledged. I would also like to

thank staff for their expertise and willingness to go beyond what is expected to deliver

teaching and learning programmes that make a difference. To the staff leaving, thank

you for your contribution. A special farewell to retiring teachers, Ms Sharyn Meffin and

Mr Ian Parker who have given the school many years of loyal service. I also

acknowledge Ms Lescher who is stepping down from her role as a senior leader.

I wish everyone in our school

community all the very best for the

holiday season and New Year.

I look forward to an even more

promising 2018.

Author Visit

A group of twenty-two keen writers had a

great opportunity to gain some valuable

insight to their craft with visiting author

Shriram Iyer. He spent nearly three hours

with them in a workshop that covered all

aspects of writing, from ideas to

marketing, plot, and character

development. The writers all enjoyed

discussing various books and sharing

what they are working on.

It is the second time Shriram has visited

the school; he talked to the Writers

Group two years ago when his first book

Wings of Silence was published.

His second book Let Me Go was

released in November.

Enviro School Silver

Thanks to the continued hard work and dedication of

our Environment Group, the school is now officially a

Silver EnviroSchool, and the only secondary school in

the local area to have earned this status. The team

made a professional presentation to the Auckland City

Council EnviroSchool team highlighting all the various

projects and progress made within the school to

improve our sustainability. The council team were very

impressed with the professionalism and commitment

shown by our students to raise awareness and help the

environment.

Reducing our waste has been just one of the team’s focus areas with the aim to lessen the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.

To aid this more recycling bins have been set up around the school. From the tonnage of paper recycled this year the school

recently received 30 native trees from the Paper4Trees paper recycling scheme. More food waste is collected for the worm

farm, from areas about the campus, including the staffroom, which has resulted in a dramatic reduction in our rubbish skip

bin. The compost created from the worm farm is used on various garden areas including the Fruit Forest Garden.

As well as helping with the school, members of the Environment Group take part in community projects such as the annual

Mangamangaroa tree planting project, beach clean-up and help local primary schools with their own environment projects.

They are soon to begin a new project at the Emilia Maud Nixon Garden of Memories, working with East Care Health Board

members, an Auckland City Council waste minimisation engineer and a Howick Diabetic Clinic member to create a

sustainable garden for the community.

Congratulations to the Envirogroup and thank you for your commitment to helping raise awareness about environment issues

and how we can all help make a difference.

Year 10 Inspire

Three days of activities kept the Year 10 students busy in their last week of

Junior school, with the annual Year 10 Inspire events. The field was full of fun

and food trucks arranged in conjunction with the Big Stand team. Students

took part in a water slide, inflatable obstacle course and participated in house

games over the course of the afternoon.

A day of sports saw students competing for their House in games on the field.

After the completion of games, an active quiz had students racing to spell out

answers by arranging themselves into the required answers, then heading to

the Theatre for ‘Howick’s Got Talent’.

Inspire concluded with students enjoying off-

site trips to either the Auckland Zoo or

Waiwera. What a great way to end the year!

school FaceBook page.

Year 9 Camps…

Sun, sailing, frisbee golf, archery and kayaking were all on the

schedule for Year 9 students on their recent camps. The two-night

camp at Waharau is jam-packed with activities and fun, which is all

part of the Outdoor Education curriculum.

For some students, activities such as sailing and kayaking are new

experiences, for others the camps offer opportunities to challenge

themselves, and for all of them camp is a fun time where friendships

are made, and social and team work skills are strengthened. A highlight

of the school year, it is a great way to finish off the first year of high

school.

With over 400 students in Year 9, it takes a huge amount of work to

ensure the camps run smoothly, with lots of staff involved organising,

helping groups, running activities and ensuring everyone is well fed.

A very big thankyou to all who helped out and made the camps so successful.

Thanks also to our senior student leaders who give up their break time to help

out on camp to support their peers.

More photos of the camps are available on the school Facebook page here:

National Netball Champions!

What a way to end the season! After gaining entry to the

Premier division last year, our girls had an amazing year

of netball seeing them qualify for Nationals at the Upper

North Island Secondary Schools tournament for the first

time in the school’s history. The girls headed to Rotorua

to represent the school and swept through the

competition undefeated to take the title from rivals St

Kents in an exciting final game.

Added to the excitement of winning the nationals was a

surprise visit from former Howick College student the

current Silver Fern captain, Katrina Grant. She popped

in to school to personally congratulate the girls on their

major achievement.

Board of Trustees

As another school year nears the end, we can look back on a term where there is pressure on the students with exams, our year nines off to camp over a two week period to finish their first year at college, and a time we celebrate excellence within our school. There was much excellence to celebrate and the students and staff should be very proud of their efforts. Term four is a time that the senior leadership and the board get together for a full day and look at where they want the school to go to over the next few years, and also take time to reflect on the current year’s highs and lows. The board is also looking at the longer term, and what we would like the school to look like and have in place by 2024 – our 50

th Jubilee. Vision 2024 is a plan the board and Senior

Leadership have spoken about in our recent Strategy Day. It is very exciting, and early next year we will provide our community with more detail around this vision. We have quality leadership and quality staff now we need to complete it with quality facilities – something we are planning and progressing with. The new student leadership structure was announced and I am extremely pleased to see the announcement of our head girl and boy, the first for the school. The recipients, Inka and Nathan, are two students who will do the school proud and are very deserving recipients, living the Howick College 3Cs. I would like to congratulate all the various groups and teams who have represented our school this year, from drama, debating and musical groups, to the many sporting teams. We hope you have enjoyed your opportunities, and look forward to many more next year. For those students who are leaving Howick College, I would like to wish you all the best in your future tertiary education, trade schools, travels or entry into the workforce. I hope that your time at Howick College has been rewarding, has created friends for life, and has taught you some of the many skills you need to progress in life outside of college. I would like to wish all students, staff and our community a safe and relaxing break over December and January and look forward to our returning students and staff in 2018.

Regards,

Roger Gribble, BoT Chair
