High Burnup Data Project – Why We Need Data
Data available are from lab testing
Limited data on HBU fuel in dry storage– Data needed to support HBU fuel Aging Management Plans for
several renewed storage licenses– Transport licenses for HBU fuel are very limited and restricted
Need to collect data on HBU fuel– Real fuel, in a real cask, under real conditions

High Burnup Data Project – Big Picture
Collect data on High Burnup fuel in dry storage conditions– Select fuel to provide best scientific data (4 cladding
types)– Determine initial condition of fuel– Instrument cask to acquire data (temperature and gas
composition)– Load cask using standard industry loading processes– Collect data– Store ~ 10 years– Determine post-storage condition of fuel– Reclose and continue storage and measurements

High Burnup Data Project
DOE/EPRI contract– 80/20 DOE/EPRI cost share– EPRI led teamDominion, AREVA (AFS, TN, NP, Fuels), Westinghouse, NAC
– Design, fabricate, license and load cask– Take measurements and report results– Extract and ship sister rods
DOE/National Lab activities– Nondestructive and destructive sister rod testing– Detailed thermal modeling– Provide Fuel Examination Facility

Initial Results
Temperatures –– Not reporting yet due to blind round robin thermal analysis– Thermocouples working and recording temperatures– Observed thermal transient from draining through drying, backfill and reaching
equilibrium
Gas samples– 3 samples taken (After He backfill, then about 1 week apart)– No Kr - All radionuclides essentially zero (below detection limit) No fuel failure
– No hydrogen or oxygen (below detection limit)– Moisture content still evaluating Convert results of sample bomb (ppm) to cask conditions (grams) Need to validate North Anna analysis equipment Just received results from Sandia

High Burnup Data Project Schedule (con’t)
~2027Prepare cask for transportationShip cask to a Fuel Examination Facility (TBD)Open cask and visually examine the fuel
– Extract high burnup rods for subsequent examination– Conduct nondestructive and destructive examinations at
the national lab(s)Same exams as “t=0” exams on sister rodsCompare end-of-storage and “t=0” fuel properties
Reclose cask and continue storage; re-open again later
