Imagine striking a glowing piece of metal like a railroad spike against an anvil and transforming it into a knife. Brock Martin has been a blacksmith’s apprentice and assistant at John C. Campbell Folk School, Calerin Forge and Jackson County Green Energy Park. He will teach the basics of coordination, shaping, tool handling, tempering and polishing. Students will meet at his work site, War Fire Forge, in Conover. This class could become on-going if there is enough interest. Brock is a Medievalist who makes Chain Maille armor and jewelry as well as metal objects for the home. Bring a leather apron and gloves if you have them.

The art form is having a creative resurgence and Medievalist Brock Martin will teach the construction methods of winding, opening and closing the metal rings to weave a beautiful bracelet or a pair of

earrings. Students can purchase a mandrel (tool for winding wire) for $35 or borrow one from Brock. Other supplies are

If you’ve been to the Museum since September 17, I hope you’ve already begun helping us spread the word about our newly re-opened third floor Mezzanine featuring the interactive exhibition DISCOVER FOLK ART: Unique Visions by Southern Self-Taught Artists from the Hickory Museum of Art Collection.

Designed to showcase over 200 pieces in the Museum’s extensive collection of Southern Contemporary Folk Art, most were gifted or purchased from Hickory collectors Barry and Allen Huffman. Divided into Personal Beliefs, Memories, Nature and Collecting themes, the exhibit encourages exploration and discovery through traditional labels, text panels, and catalogs, as well as new tools like:

• Touch Screens with information and videos about folk art and artists in the exhibition;

• Family Activity Stations to make rubbings from reproductions of our stone artwork, and to design folk art assemblages and collages;

• Re-Creations of Artists’ Working Environments including a school bus where an artist lived and stored artwork, and the barn where another made and stored his objects; and

• Cell Phone Tour Stops that allow visitors to use their own phones to access audio information about folk artists and their creations.

As with any project of this magnitude, contributions reflect gifts of many types and sizes providing important funding, time, energy and creativity. We are especially appreciative for a multi-year $150,000 matching grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, additional major support from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, Inc. and a multi-year gift from the Unifour Foundation Endowment Fund of North Carolina Community Foundation.
