PHI THETA KAPPAPhi Theta Kappa exists to recognize and encourage scholarships among students intwo year colleges. The honor society provides opportunity for the development of lead-ership, an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas, and stimulation of continuingacademic excellence. HIBBING COMMUNITY COLLEGE Hibbing Community College, a technical & community college, was established onJuly 1, 1996, through the consolidation of Hibbing Community College and RangeTechnical College-Hibbing.Hibbing was one of the first towns in the nation to expand educational opportunitiesby opening a two-year college in 1916. Thus, Hibbing Community College, is one ofthe oldest two-year colleges in Minnesota and the nation. Eleven students attendedthe first and only course offered in 1916 at Hibbing Junior College — later known asHibbing State Junior College and then as Hibbing Community College. Campus lo-cations changed three times from North Hibbing, to the west wing of Hibbing HighSchool and finally to its current location.The Hibbing Area Vocational Technical Institute was established in 1962. It respondedto the need to provide post-secondary vocational opportunities for high school gradu-ates and miners who were being affected by the “boom and bust” cycles on the Iron-Range. The institution was renamed a “technical institute” in 1987 and a “technicalcollege” in 1989. In 1992, it merged with the Eveleth campus to form Range TechnicalCollege. Today, Hibbing Community College, a technical & community college, serves morethan 1,400 students in credit courses each year, in addition to approximately 15,000students in customized training. The college offers a wide variety of liberal artscourses, transfer programs, occupational and technical programs, customized training,continuing education, student activities, recreational and athletic programs and finearts programs.
