The 2010 school year is almost at an end, whether it is a student’s freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year, and classes should be completed to their fullest potential. The nice spring weather makes it very tempting to skip classes, but in the long run it will only hurt individuals. Summer vacation is almost here as well. This will be the time to enjoy the warm weather, get out in the sun, go to the beach, make extra money and attend county events such as the fair and Fourth of July parade. Senior Brandi Marganti said, “I can’t wait for the school year to be over. Even though it is no fun to be sitting in classes with no windows all day, I will be completed with school soon enough. It will make me feel good to finish the year strong. Participating in a spring sport really helps me stay focused in school.” School is the main focus of anyone’s future. The way students prevail today will predict their future. Junior Nicole Ott said, “Saying focused on school really is important. I have an entire school year to complete after this year, but that isn’t a reason to slack off. I am looking forward to summer vacation to get a break from school for several weeks. Senior Kyle Kozlowski said, “It is dumb to slack off at the end of the year, especially if you are a senior. That could mess things up with colleges, and keep students from a successful finish.” Finish the school year with a bang; The end is in sight Prom is one of the most exciting nights for a high school student. It is a night to get loose and have fun with friends. A lot of teenagers like to take their fun a little too far on prom night. To be safe on prom night, teenagers need to stay away from par- ties with alcohol. Underage drinking is against the law and has very severe consequences, such as: alcohol poisoning, drunk driv- ing and getting arrested for underage drinking. “ On prom night I am planning on staying with my prom group. I know I can trust the people in my group to not do anything stu- pid,” said junior Trent Fara High school students have to be responsible on big nights like this; one bad move could affect someone for the rest of his or her life. Another tip is to make sure people in groups are not planning on drinking before or after prom. Junior Sarah Mumma said, “Surround yourself with a date or a group who are trustworthy.” People also need to watch out for drugs or people doing drugs. This is a school function and the rules that apply in school also ap- ply during prom. Prom is all about the memories. Groups should plan fun things to do after to stay out of trouble like, having a bonfire or just hanging out with your close friends at someone’s house. “I plan on just going back to a friends house after prom and just relaxing and looking back on how much fun we had at our final prom,” said senior Evan Jurjevic Stay safe this prom The search for prom attire and accessories need not be an out of town endeavor with the wide availability of stores in La Porte. Stores around town include both formal wear for guys and girls and a few flower shops that can supply any needed corsages, boutonnieres and assorted bouquets. L.R. Men’s Clothier, located at 205 Lincolnway, supplies all varieties of men’s formal wear, includ- ing tuxedoes. Friendly service with accurate or- ders and personal attention so as to ensure a per- fect match is a must, and all are exceeded at L.R. “We’ve made it our goal to supply top of line clothing to the men of La Porte,” says, Leann Van- Schoyck, owner of L.R. “We give individual attention to every detail.” With flexible hours and a wide selection coupled with competitive prices, there’s no reason to travel outside of town for exactly what’s needed. Ruby Slippers, located at 510 Lincolnway, is a resale prom bombshell stocked up with dresses, handbags and shoes from the most prestigious homes of fashion all around the world. The best part is the prices throughout the store are ridiculously low for the quality of their products. “It’s my goal to find all the best and make it the cheapest,” says owner Simpson O’Brien. “If girls out there need an awesome dress at an awesome price, Ruby Slippers is the place to be!” Ruby’s selection is unique from other retailers and they have an incredibly wide variety or vintage and formal dresses. Aside from clothing and accessories, one will be interested to know the options for flowers. Thode Floral, located at 1609 Lincolnway, and Kaber Floral, 516 I St., will offer all flower products needed. Tradition calls for a corsage for her and a boutonniere for him. Both shops offer creative and eye-catching designs that are sure to please. Whatever this year’s Prom calls for, La Porte has everything! With prom less than a month away, students at LPHS aren’t just looking forward to the biggest dance of their high school career; they are also looking forward to that glorious day known as Senior Skip Day. The tradition has changed over the years though, with students of all ages that attend prom skipping the Monday after. But what do students do on senior skip day? Senior Cody Tarpley said, “The Sunday after prom I am planning on going to Chicago with a group of friends, so Monday just might be my relaxing day.” Students could be wiped out after this long weekend, with pre prom plans, prom, and post prom plans. Some students might want to use that Monday to recover and get ready for the school week ahead. Junior Haley Hines said, “The only thing that I will be doing on se- nior skip day is just hanging out with my friends. We will probably go to the beach and just hang out.” Going to the beach, sleeping and hanging out with friends are great ideas for senior skip days, but what other things could be done on this day? Getting out and going running or just plain going outside to get some fresh air are good ideas too. Many students are wondering if they can actually get in trouble for skipping senior skip day. What are the consequences for skipping if not a senior, and if a senior skips are there and consequences for them? “Senior skip day is just a normal day. Teachers expect that the stu- dents will be at school on the Monday after prom. The consequences are the same for any student that skips that day. If a parent calls in to make sure that their child is there the student, if skipped, could be counted truant. Also, students who skip should be aware if they are close to being over their days, because since senior skip day is so late in the trimester there aren’t very many days to make up,” said Assistant Principal Mr. Menne. The dress, the flowers and the pre- and post- prom plans can all add up to a very high price. Luckily, there are tips and tricks to save during prom season. “Prom can become extremely expensive, extremely fast, I like hunting down deals in order to keep the price low,” said senior Natalie Pope. Also, the boys can get great deals on rental tuxes during prom season from local tux shops. “I rented my tux last year for prom from L.R. When shopping for a clutch, look for oversized clutches that can double as go-to bags for run- ning errands and for summer nights out on the town. Metal- lic clutches are a great option too, since metallics are hot for the summer, but are also trendy for prom season. “Forever 21 have so many great pieces of jewelry and the prices cannot be beat,” said Pope. Dinner is yet another prom ac- tivity that can become costly. A great alternative to going out to eat before prom is to host a pre- prom dinner party. This way everyone can pitch in and a great meal can be prepared at home for less. Hosting a pre-prom dinner party can also be a great time to take tons of fun pictures and allows ample time for the girls to freshen up before they make their walk down the red carper. “I think hosting a prom dinner party is a very fun idea.
