HONOLULU, JULY 24, 1894.

A SUPPRESSED LETTER.

Gresham To Willis.

It is surprising that the official

organ of Mr. Hatch never haspublished the following letterfrom Secretary Greshnm to Min-

ister Willis. It is quite interest-ing asnu answer to Dole's "state-document- ."

It evidently didn'tsuit tho Government party. Thefollowing is an extract:"The President sincerely regrets

that the Provisional Governmentrefuses to acquiesce in the con-

clusion which his sense of rightand duty and a due regard forour national honor constrainedhitn to reach and submit us ameasure of justice to the peopleof tho Hawaiian Islands and their

. deposed Sovereign. While it istrue that the Provisional Governmoot was created to exist on Juntil tho Islands were annexedto tho United States, that theQueen finally, but reluctantly, surrendered to an armed force ofthis government illegally quartered in .Honolulu, anil representatives of the Provisional Governmonfc (which realized its impot- -

oncy aud was anxious to get control of .the Queen's means ofdefense) assured her that, if shewould surrender, hor caso wouldbo subsequently considered bytho United Statos, the Presidenthas never claimed thatsuch actionconstituted him an arbitrator inthe technical sense, or authorizedhim, toactjn that capacity between tho Constitutional Governmoht and tho Prorisional Govornment. x :.Xoxij. made no sucuclaim when you acquainted thatGovornmont with tho President'sdecision.

The solomu assurance given tothe Queen has been referred to,not as authority for the President to act as arbitrator, but as afact matorial to a just determination of tho Pfesidout's duty intho premises

In the noto which 'tho Ministerof loroign Artairs addressed toyou on tho 23rd nit, it is statedin effect "that oven if tho Constitutional Government was subverted by tho action of the AmericanMinister and an invasion by amilitary force of the UnitedStates, tho President's authorityis limited to dealing with ourown unfaithful officials, and thatho can take no stons lookinrr totho correction of the wrong dono."Tho President ontorbiins n rlif- -

foront viow of his responsibilityand duty. Tho subversion of thoTT ?. . .juawanan uovernmont by anabuse of tho authority of theUnited States was in plain viola-tion, of international law and required the Presideut to disavowand condemn tho act of ouroffoudiug officials, and within thelimits of his constitutional powor,to restoro the lawful authority.

lieferring to tho interview ofMinister Willis with tho Queenlast Novomber and prior' to thoreceipt of Willis's despatch an- -

nouuoing tho result of his second. . . I

mtomew, Secretary Greshamsays: "The President thereupon I

submitted the subject to the moreextended powers and wider discretion of Congresc, adding thaassurance that ha would le gra-tified to cooperate in any legiV- i-inata plan waich might b deviaeifor a solation of tha problem oon--

RIPE PEARS.

Neither Stevens Of Other 0t-side- rs

Can Have "Hawaii,"Dole's Eipe Pears.

It was of, considerable interestto the community to see a reportin the daily papers referring tothe appearance of President San-for- d

Ballard Dole in the DistrictCourt as the prosecuting witnessagainst a native man who had"embezzled' a couple of dollarsworth of alligator pears from the"savior" of Hawaii. When ?Ir.Stevens wanted to present the"ripe Hawaiian pear" to theUnited States, Mr. Dole grinnedand expressed his readiness tohelp in the steal. Hawaii didnot belong to. him, and he wasperfectly ready to give the pearaway. When the question comesto Mr. Dole's private pears; thepears of which he undoubtedlyis the owner, he kicks like a steeragainst anybody who tries to givethem away, and he forgets hisdignity so far as to appear incommon court, and help to senda poor kanaka to jail.

To think that the idol ofthe American JLengae, of theSchentzen Clnb, and of all theanti-Asiati- c Americans (! !) whoseauthorities he only recognizes, should employ Chinese labor andyet draw $12,000 a year fromthe tax-paye- rs! Shocking anddisgusting and very discouragingto his worshipped. It wouldhave been better to drop the case, kick the thief in private (or shoothim m his "constitution, ') andsay nothing than come boldly totoe iront as an employer of Ch- i-neso and a prosecutor of Hawaiian. Dole ! Dole !! Listen toour warning voice ! and use"Pears Soap."

Wo referred yesterday to theremarkable decision given by twoof our Supreme Judges in which acuardian of an imbecile is allowedto bring suit for divorce on be-

half of his ward. "We are toldthat we had no business to besurprised ovor such a decision asthe caso of Irene Brown vs. C.A.Brown and others has furnisheda precedent. We have in formerissues reforred to that case, andto the part whichjthe Chief Jus-tic- o

had in it. It seems nowthat the plaintiff withdraws hersuit, but that a "guardian" ofsomebody is trying to force hert0 continue it. The guardianbusiness is really getting to bemore interesting than even thepresidential job, and we wouldn'tbe surprised to see Dole dropu,s present situation to becomea guardian say for Kaiulani.Meanwhile our two brilliantjudges Messrs. Bickerton andProar are having their vacation

not by guardian though. Iftney only would take a permanent vacation, and fill their officeper guardian, the country 'wouldbe pleased and the people wonldbe justified in congratulatingthomselves.

Wehave been watching these stovesfor the past five years, and findthem the best iron stove sold inthis market for the money,Where else than at our store canyou get a stove that will do every-

thing that a $50 stove will do andgot it for $15? Echo answers, the place isn't built.' We have

sold hundreds of these stoves inHonolulu, and never had a com-

plaint. Two weeks ago, we soldone to a gentleman on Hawaii, and yesterday he ordered anotherfor a friend. The stove sellsitself through its fuel savingqualities, and because, it is agood baker. You can get otherstyles of stoves if you are notparticular as to the quantityof fuel you burn or how yourfood is cooked. There's no dys-

pepsia in meals prepared on aPANSY.

We received last week a lot ofwire clothes-lin- es that holdwashed clothes without nsingpins. It is a sort of double wirearrangement and the pieces areheld in between; the harder thewind blows the tighter the piecesare held to the line. There isabsolutely no danger of theclothing being torn as there isnothing sharp about the lineMWhile the cost is a trifle greaterthan rope, this new style willlast so much longer that it iseconomical to buy the pinlessline.
