Hi Lindy,

I have arrived in the Amazon and am having a lovely time. I am sure you would love it here. So far I have been on the river boat with the Shiwiar Indians (who I am staying with). I really enjoyed that part as we saw some Pink River Dolphins! The food here is very exotic but tasty! We had some kind of herbal dish last night. Today we went into the jungle to spot some of the different creatures that live here. I spotted two beautiful parrots flying over head. They were amazing to see! The locals are much better at spotting things than me and by the end of the walk we had seen many animals. Snakes, birds - lots, even a jaguar! I can’t wait for tomorrow, my last day here. I look forward to seeing you very soon.

• Dear Mum,• Having a great time, what an amazing place to visit! We

went on some canoes yesterday. On a search for Alligators! Spent the whole Day on the white sandy beaches on the banks of the ‘rio negro’ Tomorrow we are taking another boat trip to hopefully catch sight of the dolphins! The rooms are lovely and the food is fantastic, Miss you all and see you soon!

Dear Lindy, Today I went on a eco-trip to the Amazon rainforest. The accommodation is a lovely bamboo hut and everyone is really friendly. Also I went sport fishing in one of the pools they have. I caught 5 fish and then we went on a tour and saw the rainforest, there were bugs and trees and we saw why we needed to save it. Then we saw the village and how the people that lived there worked and played. And when we went to bed. It was fabulous but my dad was bitten by mosquitoes (He should eat more marmite). Wish you were here, Matthew

• The Reina de Enin Ecological Cruiser is a riverboat that navigates on the Mamore River, the largest river in Bolivia, and a tributary of the Bolivia Amazon River. The cruiser offers 2-6 day tours during which time you will be in close contact with wildlife and nature. It is possible to take hikes, go horseback riding, observe wild animals, visit indigenous communities, or just lay back in your hammock with a cold drink. It's also your chance to search

for the pink river dolphin in Bolivia. By Oliver

Summary• The main point to draw from this is that it is quite possible to go

to the Amazon and see amazing things.• But not many of you commented on the people working to make

this happen – the indigenous people that have sustainable work to do – and only a few mentioned the special measures taken to reduce the environmental impact – you talked about going out by canoe or on walks but did not see that this happened deliberately to reduce greenhouse gases and save on resources that are running out.

• Many of these eco-tourist sites do put a great deal of effort into reducing their impact, e.g. compost toilets, recycling waste, using solar power, local food etc, using local materials for building, rather than importing high-tech stuff from outside that uses lots of energy, like power showers. They don’t use speed boats as this would disturb the environment.
