I'm hoping you can help me with some details regarding volunteers, specifically those from the University. Governor Lingle writes a monthly column for Ka Leo, UH Manoa's student newspaper, and for the month of February, we'd like to highlight the robotics competition. In it, we will specifically solicit volunteers for the Regional.

Can you share some information on what types of volunteers are needed? What they would be doing? Where they can go for more information? Who they contact? Info on VIMS? And anything else you can think of...

We'll also urge University students to attend the Regional to see what their colleagues at the College of Engineering and their soon-to-be peers at the high school level are doing!

ITV4 will be launching a huge station initiative “Hawaii Going Green” which will run April 2008-March 2009. This public awareness campaign will be to promote a healthier environment in the state of Hawaii. Together with the help of our sponsors we will be able to make positive changes in the attitudes of Hawaii’s people and make an impact on their actions for individuals, families,k and the community at large. We will also be providing tips and resources to the public on various subjects such as: recycling, pollution, air and water quality, alien species, alternative energy, etc…

The actual package will be given at the luncheon but here’s the 6 campaign elements:

#1 News Coverage – Gary Sprinkle will be the face of this campaign and will be producing 52 weeks of news features that will be featured in News at 5 and Morning News. Reports will be on weekly “green beats” with different environmental stories.

#2 Action Messages – Vignette series on useful information, suggestions, and reminders of simple ways we can help Hawaii “go green”. There will be 3 flights. May/June, Nov/Dec, Feb/March There is also

media value where the sponsors can also run their own spots.

#3 Psa’s – KITV4 will run :15 green profiles highlighting environmental heroes in the marketplace and also run :15 psa’s on tips, etc…Sponsors get logo id on these.

#4 Half-hour specials: Pacific Adventures” Gary Sprinkle to produce 6 specials where sponsors will receive spots inside the pgrm

#5 Keiki Going Green –onsite opportunities; KITV4 will partner with a couple widely attended keiki events

#6 Website launch of www.hawaiigoinggreen.com – we will have a url that we own and will promote that will have information and be a resource for consumers to learn info. Ex: recycling locations, energy saving tips, etc…. We’ll have lots of content and all sponsors will have prominent ads and logo links.

Lois:

ITV4 will be launching a huge station initiative “Hawaii Going Green” which will run April 2008-March 2009. This public awareness campaign will be to promote a healthier environment in the state of Hawaii. Together with the help of our sponsors we will be able to make positive changes in the attitudes of Hawaii’s people and make an impact on their actions for individuals, families,k and the community at large. We will also be providing tips and resources to the public on various subjects such as: recycling, pollution, air and water quality, alien species, alternative energy, etc…

The actual package will be given at the luncheon but here’s the 6 campaign elements:

#1 News Coverage – Gary Sprinkle will be the face of this campaign and will be producing 52 weeks of news features that will be featured in News at 5 and Morning News. Reports will be on weekly “green beats” with different environmental stories.

#2 Action Messages – Vignette series on useful information, suggestions, and reminders of simple ways we can help Hawaii “go green”. There will be 3 flights. May/June, Nov/Dec, Feb/March There is also media value where the sponsors can also run their own spots.

#3 Psa’s – KITV4 will run :15 green profiles highlighting environmental heroes in the marketplace and also run :15 psa’s on tips, etc…Sponsors get logo id on these.

#4 Half-hour specials: Pacific Adventures” Gary Sprinkle to produce 6 specials where sponsors will receive spots inside the pgrm

#5 Keiki Going Green –onsite opportunities; KITV4 will partner with a couple widely attended keiki events

#6 Website launch of www.hawaiigoinggreen.com – we will have a url that we own and will promote that will have information and be a resource for consumers to learn info. Ex: recycling locations, energy saving tips, etc…. We’ll have lots of content and all sponsors will have prominent ads and logo links.

LANE CLOSURES For the week of February 2 - 8

PLEASE NOTE: Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice. All projects are

weather-permitting.

OAHU

H-1 Freeway 1) Airport Viaduct (SUNDAY WORK) Three rightmost lanes of the H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct will be closed in the westbound direction from the Airport on-ramp to the Kamehameha Highway/Aloha Stadium/Arizona Memorial off-ramp (Exit 15A (West)) on Sunday 2/3, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., for concrete pavement repair work. All on-and-off-ramps will remain open during this time. Westbound motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the work area, to allow for extra travel time or to use alternate routes including the H-201 Moanalua Freeway or Nimitz Highway underneath the H-1 Airport Viaduct. Roadwork is weather-permitting.

2) Waipahu To Waikele (NIGHT WORK) Two-lane closures in the eastbound direction from the Fort Weaver Road on-ramp to the Paiwa Street on-ramp on Monday night , 2/4, through Friday morning , 2/8, from 9:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., nightly, for pavement resurfacing. The two rightmost lanes and two leftmost lanes will be closed at different times on Monday night, 2/4. For the remaining nights, only the two leftmost lanes will be closed.

3) Eastbound: Pearl City To Aiea (NIGHT WORK) Multiple lane closures in the eastbound direction for overhead signage repairs and maintenance at the following locations and times:

Three rightmost lanes will be closed between the Waimalu/Pearlridge off-ramp (Exit 10 o

(East)) to the Kaamilo Street Overpass from 10:30 p.m. on Monday night , 2/4, through 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning , 2/5. During these hours, the eastbound H-1 on-ramp from Moanalua Road at the Pearl City Interchange will also be closed. Motorists are advised to use the next available eastbound H-1 on-ramp from Kamehameha Highway just west of Honomanu Street in Aiea near the Aloha Stadium.

Two rightmost lanes will be closed between the Waiawa Road Overpass and the o

Waimalu/Pearlridge off-ramp (Exit 10 (East)) from 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday night , 2/6, through 4:00 a.m. on Thursday morning , 2/7.

4) Westbound: Punchbowl And Pearl City (NIGHT WORK) Freeway on-ramp and lane closures in the westbound direction for guardrail repairs and maintenance at the following locations and times:

Single lane closure between the Pali Highway off-ramp (Exit 21B (West)) to the o

Punchbowl Street on-ramp from 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday night , 2/6, through 4:00 a.m. on Thursday morning , 2/7. During these hours, the westbound H-1 on-ramp from Punchbowl Street will also be closed. Westbound motorists are advised to use the next available H-1 on-ramp from School Street.

Single lane closure between the Waimalu on-ramp from Moanalua Road to the Waipahu o

off-ramp (Exit 8B (West)) from 8:30 p.m. on Thursday night , 2/7, through 4:00 a.m. on Friday morning , 2/8. During these hours, the westbound Waimalu on-ramp from Moanalua Road will also be closed. Westbound motorists are advised to use the next available H-1 on-ramp from Kamehameha Highway near Waihona Street.

Farrington Highway 1) Kahe Point To Makaha (SATURDAY WORK) Single lane closures in the westbound direction from the Kahe Point Beach Park to Kili Drive on Saturday , 2/2, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., for street lighting repair work.

2) Waianae To Makaha Single lane closures in both directions between Auyong Homestead Road and Lawaia Street on Monday, 2/4, through Friday, 2/8, 8:30 am to 3 pm, daily, for various contractor permit projects including watermain and manhole installations.

3) Waialua Single lane closures in both directions from Kaena Point to Kaukonahua Road for lane striping and marker installations on Monday, 2/4, through Friday, 2/8, 8:30 am to 3 pm, daily, for various contractor permit projects including watermain and manhole installations.

Kahekili Highway 1) Kulukeoe Street To Haiku Road Left lane closures between Kulukeoe Street and Haiku Road in both directions on Monday 2/4, through Friday 2/8, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., daily, for removal of existing median barriers.

Kalanianaole Highway 1) Near Keolu Drive Right lane closure in the Waimanalo-bound direction near the Keolu Drive intersection on Monday 2/4, through Friday 2/8, 8:30 am to 3 pm, daily, for drainage improvements, excavations.

Kamehameha Highway 1) Near Pearl Harbor Single lane closures in both directions near Center Drive on Monday 2/4, through Friday 2/8, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., daily, for lane striping and pavement marker installations.

2) From Mililani To Wheeler AAF Southbound traffic will be contraflowed using the northbound lanes between Lehua Road and Waikalani Drive on Monday 2/4, through Friday 2/8, from 8:30 a.m. through 3:00 p.m., daily. 24-hour right and left lane closures will also be in effect, seven-days-a-week in the southbound direction between Santos Dumont Avenue and Waihau Street. Portable concrete barriers will close these lane segments for shoulder widening and curb construction.

3) Near USS Arizona Memorial

Temporary detour bridge near Pearl Harbor Naval Base Halawa Gate is in operation 24-hours a day while repairs are made to existing bridge. No U-turns are allowed at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Halawa Drive.

Likelike Highway 1) In Kalihi Single lane closures in the Kaneohe-bound direction from King Street to Emmeline Place and a right lane closure in the Kaneohe-bound direction near Valley View Drive on Monday 2/4, through Friday 2/8, 8:30 am to 3 pm, daily, for lane striping, pavement marker installations and roadside tree-trimming.

Pali Highway 1) Honolulu-Bound Closure (WEEKEND WORK) Honolulu-bound lanes will be closed between Waokanaka Street and Kamehameha Highway at Castle Junction from 7 pm on Saturday night 2/2, through 7 am on Sunday morning 2/3, for overnight tunnel cleaning operations and maintenance work. Honolulu-bound motorists are advised to use such alternate routes as Likelike Highway or the H-3 Freeway and to allow for extra travel time. Only emergency vehicles and City and County buses will be allowed through the closure.

Ala Moana Boulevard 1) Resurfacing Project (NIGHT WORK) Multiple lane closures in both directions from Fort Street to Piikoi Street on Monday night 2/4, through Friday morning 2/8, 8 pm to 5 am, nightly, for sawcutting and trenching work for the installation of street light and traffic signal conduits.

Fort Weaver Road 1) Widening Project, Phase II Right shoulder lanes from Laulaunui Street to Old Fort Weaver Road are closed in both directions 24/7 to isolate work areas from traffic.

Kaukonahua Road 1) Road Lane Striping Lane closures in both directions between Farrington Highway at Thompson Corner and Waialua Beach Road at Weed Circle on Monday 2/4, through Friday 2/8, 8:30 am to 3 pm, daily, for lane

striping and marker installations.

Puuloa Road 1) Improvements Project This improvements project will create a wider, divided two-lane roadway with dedicated turn and merge lanes, increasing safety and traffic flow through the Mapunapuna area. Roadwork is scheduled on Monday 2/4, through Saturday 2/9, 8:30 am to 3 pm, daily, at the following locations:

Single lane closures in both directions near Kilihau Street for utility line splicing. o

Shoulder lanes in both directions closed. Roadside parking will not be permitted. o

Access to Mapunapuna Place from Puuloa Road will be closed for removal of overhead utility lines and poles on Wednesday , February 6, through Thursday , February 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., daily. Access to Mapunapuna Place will be allowed from Mapunapuna Street.

These repairs will require a 24-hour closure to allow concrete materials adequate time to cure. Electronic signage and police officers will be on-site directing traffic around the work zone area.

Mamalahoa Highway Rockfall Mitigation Traffic on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 19) will be contraflowed through a single lane at the Laupahoehoe Gulch between Mile Markers 26 and 27 on Monday , February 4, through Friday , February 8, from 8:30 a . m . to 3:00 p . m . , daily, for rockfall hazard mitigation work on adjacent hillsides . One lane will be closed during this period and traffic will be directed through the remaining open lane . Electronic messageboards will be posted at both ends of the work area to notify motorists of the traffic contraflow .

Queen Kaahumanu Highway Widening, Phase I, Henry Street to Kealakehe Parkway Phase I will widen Queen Kaahumanu Highway from two lanes to four to accommodate increasing traffic in Kona. A 30-foot-wide median with breakaway trees will also be built along that stretch of highway to prevent deadly head-on collisions. Estimated Phase I completion is slated for March 2008.

Mamalahoa Highway Resurfacing Pavement preservation project will cover nearly nineteen miles of Mamalahoa Highway from Puuanahulu to Palani Road (M.P. 16.45 to M.P. 35.30)

Kawaihae Road Improvements Roadway shoulders currently being reconstructed and widened at various locations from Waiaka Junction to Queen Kaahumanu Highway Junction.

MAUI

KAUAI

Kuhio Highway 1) Pavement Resurfacing Lane closures in both directions between Hui Road (near Mile Point 15) and Koolau Road (near Mile Point 20) on Monday , February 4, through Friday , February 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., daily, for pavement resurfacing. Motorists are also advised to expect intermittent delays of no more than fifteen minutes.

Kapaa Bypass Road DOT is conducting a planning study to improve Kuhio Highway between Hanamaulu and Kapaa Stream. Plan includes a widening of Kuhio Highway, a second crossing of the Wailua River and/or a bypass around Kapaa town or some combination of these alternatives.

Story one:Kihei Charter School expanding with Arts Academy By CLAUDINE SAN NICOLAS, Staff Writer WAILUKU – Kihei Charter School has forged a newpartnership to open a second campus for middle schoolstudents at the Maui Academy of Performing Artsstudios.

The charter school opened its Science TechnologyEngineering and Math Academy last fall with 48 6th-and 7th-grade students housed at the Maui Research &Technology Center. The public middle school bases itslessons on science, math and technology, and coversall the standard requirements of Hawaii publicschools.

The same concept will be applied to its new academy,offering arts-based education at the MAPA studios inWailuku. The public program will open for the 2008-09school year, initially accepting 52 6th- and 7th-gradestudents, and then adding an 8th-grade the followingyear.

Kihei Charter School students will use MAPA’sfacilities during the day, where a drama room will beconverted into a regular classroom and the currentcostume shop will be renovated as a computer lab.

Maui Academy of Performing Arts programs will not beaffected, according to MAPA Executive and ArtisticDirector David Johnston, who said the dance and dramaclasses offered in the afternoon and on Saturdays willcontinue to use the facilities as usual.

Kihei Charter will maintain its existing high schoolprogram and its online academy for grades K-12 in theKihei Commercial Center. The Science TechnologyEngineering and Math Academy, meanwhile, will add8th-grade classes this fall at the facilities providedat the R&T Center.

As with all of its programs, Kihei Charter’s new ArtsAcademy will provide project-based, hands-onexperiences that use the arts to integrate requiredsubjects such as math, English, science, socialstudies and physical education.

Kihei Charter plans to initially staff its new academywith three teachers and two educational assistants,while bringing in performing artists and teachers fromMAPA and within the community.

“We appreciate and understand the importance of thearts,” said Kihei Charter Assistant Director GailWeaver. She said she hopes to tap into MAPA’s 30 yearsof experience and expertise with ideas on reachingchildren through the arts.

MAPA officials are only too eager to assist.

“It’s a perfect relationship I think,” said CarolynWright, MAPA director of programs.

Wright said the nonprofit agency is happy to see itsbuilding used in a productive way during the morningand early afternoon when the facilities are usuallyclosed. Most of MAPA’s programs are held duringafter-school hours, evenings and on the weekends.

Kihei Charter School – whether it be the high schoolprogram or the current STEM Academy – provides regularoutside-the-classroom experiences with math andwriting enrichments, and in the case of the arts,performances, exhibitions and service learningprojects.

“This is an incredible blend of the arts andeducation,” Johnston said. MAPA is leasing its studiospace plus allowing for Kihei Charter to make facilityadjustments such as installation of wiring for thecomputer lab that both groups will use.

“The technology infusion is extremely important,”Weaver said. She added that the computers will giveopportunities for middle school lessons in animation,video and film.

Students enrolled at the Kihei Charter Arts Academywill not have to pay tuition since it is a publicschool. However, transportation to and from the MAPAstudios may have to be initially provided by theenrolling families.

While the majority of the students in the the KiheiCharter School programs live in South Maui, the schoolaccepts students from all parts of the island,including where much of MAPA’s clientele resides –Central Maui and Upcountry.

The Arts Academy is currently in discussion withcounty officials about arranging a safe location inWailuku for drop-offs and pickups to the MAPA studioson Market Street.

The MAPA building, constructed in the former NationalDollar store, does not have a driveway for studentdrop-offs and pickups.

There will be no auditions to attend the Kihei CharterArts Academy, but the school in March will offer anopportunity for potential students to experience amock day in the life of the campus. Information aboutthe academy and the “day in the life” experience willbe provided in informational sessions scheduled inFebruary.

Weaver emphasized that students attending the ArtsAcademy need not be involved in any arts program.

“It’s not about talent at all. It’s about arts andeducation and learning from that,” she said.

Johnston said MAPA and Kihei Charter have a lot incommon in approaching the arts, and providing studentsexposure and experience in the arts.

“It’s not about creating stars. It’s about creatingpeople,” Johnston said.

Second story on Capital Campaign Valentine’s Ball to help effort of finding homeBy CLAUDINE SAN NICOLAS, Staff Writer KIHEI – The South Maui Learning Ohana, a group ofsupporters for Kihei Charter School, has launched acapital campaign to provide a permanent campus for theisland’s charter school programs.

While charter schools receive public funding, thereare no state allocations designated for campusdevelopment. South Maui Learning Ohana Chairman GeneZarro, who also is president of the Kihei CharterSchool board, said permanent facilities would providemuch-needed stability for the school’s growingprograms.

The high school campus, for example, is housed in theKihei Commercial Center where it operates on amonth-to-month lease.

“That puts everyone in a state of anxiety,” Zarrosaid.

He said both the South Maui Learning Ohana and theschool board believe that a permanent campus isneeded. They estimate acquisition of a site anddevelopment will cost $7 million to $8 million.

The South Maui Learning Ohana has set a goal to raisean initial $4 million toward a Kihei Charter Schoolcampus, possibly in the area of the Maui Research &Technology Park.

Hawaii public charter schools are funded through thestate Department of Education, but the facilities arenot operated or financed by DOE. Charter schools areallowed under state law for community boards tooperate schools within the public school systemusually to focus on specific academic or culturalareas.

Kihei Charter High School was opened in 2002 with 155students by a board seeking to fulfill a community

demand for a high school campus in South Maui. As acharter school, it receives an allotment ofapproximately $8,150 per student.

Since its opening, it expanded its programs to includeonline curriculum for home-schooled students, and lastyear opened the Kihei Charter STEM Middle School,which focuses on science, technology, engineering andmathematics.

The state Department of Education has since announceda decision to acquire a site north of the Elleair GolfCourse to build a campus for a DOE high school. Butland acquisition and development of the Kihei highschool campus is still several years off, pendingstate funding. The DOE is targeting 2011 to open thecampus.

With a range of programs already in place, the KiheiCharter School is moving to set up its own campus,with the fundraiser kickoff to be a “Valentine Red &White Ball” beginning at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 at the GrandWailea Resort, Hotel & Spa.

The evening will include Valentine games, a silentauction of pre-Valentine gifts including lunch withMayor Charmaine Tavares, and music by Blind Willie.

Supporters will also be given an opportunity to bidfor a Valentine dinner date with three bachelors andthree “bachelorettes” employed by Century 21 on Maui.

The bid includes a dinner for two at one of Maui’sfine-dining restaurants.

I briefly looked at the email and will make a couple points....

We agree that RealMedia is no longer the leader in streaming media. BUT, it does what we need it to do. Having said that, we were looking at moving to Flash Media. (This is the leader over Windows media) but we ran into some procurement problems. Russ told Debra to look into these issues.... I will pursue this on Monday.

I'll go over the email in more detail tomorrow and will get back to you.

It seems that Star-Bulletin reporters and editor's are more interested in the words of political naysayers who dwell on what cannot be done, rather than the views of real people who focus on what can be achieved. Why does this paper continue to feel it's meaningful to seek out negative comments from former Democrat governors regarding Governor Lingle’s proposal to purchase the property, when everyone knows these men will say anything, with political overtones, in an attempt to make Governor Lingle look bad? Of course the former governors will say the plan cannot be done -they continue to show how out of touch they are with the people of Hawai'i. Face it, we would not be in this position of having to purchase the Turtle Bay property and preserve one of the last unspoiled parts of O'ahu had prior Democrat governors done responsible planning to protect our islands’ environment and kept development in balance with our unique island lifestyle. These former governors had their opportunity, and they failed the people of our state. Now it’s time to let Governor Lingle to do what she does best - bring the community together to find solutions that ensure we plan for future generations, improve the quality of life, and protect what makes Hawai'i special. The purchase of the Turtle Bay property is a step in the right direction.

The DSMA committee is already making plans for the next DSMA Luncheon. We are hoping that Governor Lingle would be able to assist in the celebration of our “winners” as she did in 2006. The time commitment would be from 11:30am to about 1:30pm as she also generously gave us time to take pictures with each winner as well. We are also excited about her office submitting a winner as well through Lenny Klompus. Since we are checking her schedule first before I contact the Hawaii Prince for availability it would probably be prudent to ask her to provide a couple of dates – say Tuesday, May 20

I submitted the work request because ICSD kept asking our IT folks (David Hiromoto and Wade Kamikawa) to do the updates, but they have time and time again refused to assist as they no longer do any maintenance. It was a simple request, but I understand their position not to set any precedents.

All we need done is: Under firstinhawaii.org, please click on "Get Involved" on the right, then "Become a Volunteer" in the drop down menu, then to "Sign Up" in the middle of the page. The forthcoming page says:

"...registration is not open for the 2008 FRC Season."

Please change the entire message to read: " FIRST VIMS (Volunteer Information & Matching System) registration IS open for the 2008 FRC Season. If you are interested in volunteering at the Hawaii Regional, please go to VIMS to register and we will contact you shortly. Mahalo."

We want to eliminate the entire form below and centralize our volunteer registrations at the national VIMS site.

Thanks for the feedback. I've been reflecting on the structure as well, andspoke with Marsha Wienert about it this morning. As a suggestion, we coulduse your broad subject areas, but change "Committee" to "Task Force", eachheaded by a Vice Chair. To comply with sunshine laws, each task force wouldonly bring recommendations to the full commission during our regular publicmeetings, and everyone would vote on it. That way, each task force can meeton its own without having to post public notices, etc. They are justgathering information to present to the Commission, and not meeting to makedecisions.

Perhaps it is because I have no priorexperience with commissions of this sort so please accept my apologiesif I am commenting out of sheer ignorance.

I understand the mission of this commission is to "develop, plan, andcoordinate various program activities to be scheduled to celebrate andcommemorate Statehood". So, I don't understand these committees we areforming. It occurs to me that the most important committee we shouldhave is the "events" committee, as that is the purpose of thiscommission. I'd suggest the following committees:

1) Events Committee: plan all events (probably with each eventhaving its own chair); events for tourists, military, schools, ethnicgroups, etc. would all fall under this committee. 2) Finance Committee: raise necessary funds; manage finances forCommission. 3) Research Committee: conduct necessary research on Statehood; beresource to other committees 4) Marketing & Public Relations Committee: this might include theeducational component that everyone agrees is necessary, plus handle anyvideos that need to be produced, merchandising, etc., and of course thePR efforts ongoing 5) Legislative Committee: this committee will lobby for county,state, or federal dollars, but could very well be part of FinanceCommittee, since their mission is to raise money.

There is already a Vice Chair for Events, and a Vice Chair for Finance.Find two or three more Vice Chairs for the other committees, and assignCommission members to each committee. I believe this is much cleanerthan the structure we've discussed at the last two meetings.

When Augie T makes his debut from 5:30 to 10 a.m. today on 93.1 The Zone (also known as KQMQ-FM), he'll be making local radio history. The comedian-DJ, whose full name is Augie Tulba, will become the first local commercial radio personality to be heard statewide, with simulcasts on Q103 Maui (KNUQ-FM, also heard in Kona on the Big Island) and 102.3 Moloka'i (KMKK-FM) during the morning, and a third delayed broadcast on The Surf 95.9 on Kaua'i (KSRF-FM) in an afternoon drive-time slot. Next month, Augie adds a fifth station in Hilo, with a morning simulcast on The Beach 102.1 (KTBH-FM). "I've missed talking to (Honolulu) people, so I'm really looking forward to this," Tulba said yesterday, moments after deplaning from a trip to Saipan, where he raised scholarships for youths in the Mariana Islands. "KQMQ has been a station I listened to over the years, with folks like Michael Qseng and Willie Moku. My goal is to get the station where it used to be: up in the ratings." Tulba will continue broadcasting from his home studio or out on the road, as he has been doing for the past 14 months, including a New Orleans stint at the Sugar Bowl. Hi ladies,

I have nothing in my files indicating I agreed to any charges. Having said that, I do know that with both Dr. Lucid and Dr. Jemison (both former or current astronauts) we did have to sign a confirmation of their attendance - perhaps that is what he is referring to.

Lisa, if you don't mind, please inquire as to what the exact charges are for. We will need documentation of the expenses. At the end of the 2007 conference, as Dr. Lucid was leaving, I remember her stating that everything was "taken care" of on her end.

Please keep us informed of the information you get back from NASA. It does seem strange that this is coming nearly 5 months after the conference.

I have nothing in my files indicating I agreed to any charges. Having said that, I do know that with both Dr. Lucid and Dr. Jemison (both former or current astronauts) we did have to sign a confirmation of their attendance - perhaps that is what he is referring to.

Lisa, if you don't mind, please inquire as to what the exact charges are for. We will need

documentation of the expenses. At the end of the 2007 conference, as Dr. Lucid was leaving, I remember her stating that everything was "taken care" of on her end.

Please keep us informed of the information you get back from NASA. It does seem strange that this is coming nearly 5 months after the conference.

GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $500,000 FOR NEW HANGARS AT KALAELOA AIRPORT

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $500,000 to construct 10 new T-hangars for private aircraft at Kalaeloa Airport. Currently, 19 individuals are on the waiting list to park their aircraft inside a hangar at the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station.

“In order to sustain and encourage the growth of general aviation at Kalaeloa Airport, we need more hangar facilities for pilots to park their aircraft,” said Governor Lingle. “This project will increase hangar capacity and help boost activity at the airport, while also relieving some of the airfield congestion at Honolulu International Airport.”

Currently, Kalaeloa Airport has two large hangars, Hangar 110 and Hangar 111, which were built during World War II. A portion of Hangar 110 is leased to a paint shop, while the balance houses 12 general aviation aircraft. Hangar 111 is owned by the University of Hawai‘i and is used by Honolulu Community College’s Pacific Aerospace Training Center.

This project will construct two hangar structures. The first structure will consist of six T-hangars and the second will consist of four, together providing enough space to accommodate 10 general aviation aircraft.

The majority of project funds are coming from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Military

Airport Program, which assists with improvements to former military airports that have been converted to civilian use. The total project cost is estimated at $8,156,667.

Construction of the T-hangars is expected to be completed in August 2008.

1) our list of attendees is still being finalized; we will share it with you well in advance...basically the business community and their advertising/PR agency representatives...plus of course KITV president Mike Rosenberg, environmental reporter/anchor Gary Sprinkle, all department heads and marketing staffers 2) total time for the Lt Governor's remarks....4-5 minutes max 3) we would hope that our audience takes away these kinds of impressions from his comments...

the importance of the environment to all of us in Hawaii...important not only to our local quality-of-life but also to our economy, health, future, etc....and despite our isolation, we're impacted by the rest of the world, and our efforts to preserve Hawaii's environment can impact that of the planet too...

that although we may have made errors in environmental judgement, it's not insurrmountable....the whole "going green" movement/idea is based upon understanding the importance of collective actions.....even the smallest "green initiative" or change in our behavior will cumulatively add up and make a difference in our future...

thus the importance of communicating that message to the widest possible audience, which is what the mass medium of television does best...

simply by attending this lunch, they've indicated their understanding of the importance of the "going green" message and mission....hope they might look favorably upon joining or partnering with KITV....for the common benefit of entire community...

We are still thinking about precise agenda but probably would like to ask the Lt Gov to be introduced after our management greets the folks and have him make his brief remarks before lunch....then we go into details and presentation-mode after lunch....which also give him some

separation from the cravenly commercial part of our agenda. :-)

To refresh your memory, Granicus is currently streaming house, senate and various other jurisdiction meetings through Olelo Community Television Station. Here’s an example for you to reference: http://olelo.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?publish_id=101 At this juncture we are hoping to broaden our services to help Hawaii’s Governor expand her reach to constituents as well as save the 150 Executive Boards and Commissions a great deal of time and money through more efficient meeting management solutions. From looking at your website I see the Governor is currently distributing video to the public via RealPlayer. Unfortunately, due to the advancement of webcasting technology, RealPlayer is no longer a leader in streaming media. Granicus currently leverages Windows media encoding, which is a standard format available to all Window’s users and is easily accessible to those who are not. This means it’s possible to reduce the amount of effort going into getting this video content onto the web.

50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission Communications Investigative Committee

February 3, 2008

Timeline for Events o March 12, 2009 – Observance of historic day; Reenactment at 'Iolani Palace o August 21, 2009 – Week of events leading up to 50th Anniversary • Island-specific commemorations during the week

Within the three areas of focus for events/communications efforts (local, national and international), the communications investigative committee will pursue the following opportunities and many others, as they arise:

Local o March 12, 2009 – Observance of reenactment at 'Iolani Palace

• Will work with all local television stations and cable to carry the reenactment live; • Looking at a 30 minute production. o Commemorative aloha shirt • Will work with local manufacturers, i.e. Reyn Spooner, Hilo Hattie, to develop commemorative patterns and designs. o Commemorative license plates • Will work with appropriate agencies to determine the feasibility of producing and offering commemorative license plates for Hawaii drivers. o Commemorative personal checks • Will work with check manufacturers to produce commemorative personal check designs and work with all major banking institutions to make the design available to their customers. o Oral/Video History Documentary • Will work with Education Committee members to develop best course of action; • Develop partnership between Kamehameha Schools and PBS Hawaii to produce a video documentary comprised of interviews with Hawaii residents who experienced the statehood process first hand. o Phonebook cover • Will work with Paradise Yellow Pages to design a commemorative phone book cover; • Design could also include comprehensive list of events available. o Commemorative packaging for Hawai'i-made products • Will work the state Dept. of Agriculture and the successful Hawaii Seal of Quality program to develop commemorative packaging for Hawaii-made products that are distributed and sold worldwide.

National o National morning shows • Will work with morning shows nationwide to promote Hawai'i statehood commemoration via live feeds. o Airline in-flight video messages • Will work with major national and local airlines to produce in-flight welcome videos that promote Statehood commemorative events. • Messages could highlight a variety of community members in locations statewide. o Hawai'i promotional show with Oprah Winfrey • Will work with Harpo Productions to explore the possibility of producing a Hawaii-focused show with Oprah, an avid Hawai'i supporter; • Highlight various components of Hawaii culture to dispel typical stereotypes. o Rose Bowl parade

• Kippen to add details… o Smithsonian • Will work with Smithsonian curators to explore the possibility of creating a statehood display; • May allow for partnership with Alaska, also celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2009.

International o Will work with international media outlets to promote Hawai'i statehood events as well as Hawaii culture; o Knowing the avid international interest and fascination of Hawaii's culture, a global focus is critical to the full promotion of our events and programs; o Justification for this additional focus is based on the frequently-cited example that Japan has more hula dancers than Hawaii.

In addition to the above ideas for communication efforts, the investigative committee will pursue the following immediate action steps:

• Gather general managers and publishers of all major Hawai'i media outlets to meet about promotional opportunities and their potential role. o Will work with media to further develop local promotional opportunities and how they would like to be involved. • Finalize logo design o Pending Commission approval, will work with graphic designers to produce final design to be used for consistent promotional purposes. • Develop plan for Statehood "spokespersons" who represent various aspects of the statehood commemoration

Recommendation to the Commission : • Neighbor Island event sub-committees o In order to ensure each island is appropriately represented and feels ownership in their celebration, the communications investigative committee suggests we formally establish Neighbor Island event sub-committees. • Members would be convened under the direction of each neighbor island representative and would report to the larger Commission; • Composition of sub-committees to be determined by each neighbor island representatives with consent and approval from the larger Commission; • Sub-committees will be charged with developing island-specific commemorative events during the week of events in August 2009 and securing local funding Finally, schedule public hearings on neighbor islands in April and May.
