Finally, nice weather which will let us enjoy the great outdoors. I hope everyone who can, will take advantage of our recreation area and pool. We have tennis, a golf putting green, bocce, pickleball, horseshoes and water aerobics for your enjoyment. Whether you want to participate or just watch, it’s good to get out and about. from the library. Appreciate the fact that we have thousands of

shrubs and trees of different varieties and requirements. It takes time to get everything done, but the trees and shrubs covered by the Pruning Standards and HP’s Rules and Regulations do get cared for each year. Outside the scope of the contract requires a fee for service. Keep in mind Brickman staff currently prune at HP Monday through Thursday, concurrently with the four day schedule for completing mowing operations. Mowing begins in early morning. There may be several hours between mowing and “clean up”, but it will be done by end of day.

Remember disruptions can occur to schedules for reasons that include weather and it may take time to get back on schedule. Brickman is required to keep the office informed of schedule changes. That information will be posted, as soon as possible, after it is received. Pruning changes will appear on the pruning map; mowing changes on the mowing map.

Direct your concerns to the office and not to the crew. Expect a response, but be reasonable in your expectations. The office sends the weekly concerns list to Brickman on Thursdays so contact from Brickman should occur the following week. Rarely does a landscaping concern require immediate attention. Please do not expect same day resolution. In most cases it is time management and cost effective prohibited.

The office continues to receive comments from realtors and visitors to Heritage Pines about the attractiveness of our community. This is due, in no small part, to all of our efforts and those of our contractors to maintain and improve on the condition and appearance of our grounds.

The ponds are particularly lovely this year. We hope you are enjoying them as you walk or drive by.

Brickman “As another HOT summer moves in, we wanted to provide a quick re-cap of our progress and some summer notes. So here’s a quick update:

Lawn Care – We have made two spring applications of fertilizer and weed control to all

Out to Lunch Bunch We will meet at the Blackfinn Restaurant located at 3201 Village Market Place in Morrisville on Wednesday, July 22 at 12:30 pm for lunch. If you have any questions, please call Evelyn Bryant.

Prestonwood Ladies Lunch The August Ladies Luncheon will take place on Wednesday, August 12 at 12:30 at Prestonwood Country Club. The cost will be $23.00 per person. Iced tea and coffee will be served with the meal and if you would like wine or a mixed drink it will be $8.00, beer—$5.00 or soda— $2.50. These will need to be ordered and paid for in advance, as Prestonwood doesn't accept money in their clubhouse. Lunch will be their fabulous buffet, complete with a wonderful presentation of desserts. The deadline for sign-up is Monday, July 27. Please join us.

Grounds Committee Report As we head into the heat of summer, weeds and bugs can be of concern. Please be aware not all weed and bug issues are covered in our current Brickman contract. Some will be treated at no cost to the homeowner, and others will fall under private work to be done for a fee. Brickman staff are available for consults.

The focus of this article is pruning, as it has been the primary focus on our Concerns List for May and June.

We urge you to consider and follow these suggestions: Have a copy of the Heritage Pines Rules and

Regulations, 2015 readily available. It is a living document that we update periodically. You should also reference the current Brickman Pruning Standards. If you have misplaced either of these, replacements can be obtained in the HP office.

Know the pruning schedule by looking at the large pruning map on the clubhouse wall next to the exercise room. Understand that it takes five weeks to complete a cycle (under optimum weather conditions). Remember there are two maps. This, just referenced, and one relating to the mowing schedule. The latter is located on the bulletin board across

shrubs.

Please Note: In our pruning standards we have specifications for the maximum height (10 feet for screening plantings and at window sill for foundation plants). Similarly we control side growth so as to not allow plantings to encroach on sidewalks, driveways, and to maintain space between the plant and a house wall or the utility boxes that everyone has in their front yards for access. The ultimate goal of shearing is to remove new growth and to shape plants to their natural forms. Weed Control – On a weekly basis, we are continuing to manage the weeds in both curb cracks and the beds – this is an ongoing process year round Irrigation: As we move into the summer, please continue to monitor your irrigation system and its operation, please monitor the amount of water that you are putting out and are in accordance with the town of Cary’s Watering Schedule. Due to the large amount of clay in our areas, soil over watering for long periods of time will often cause sheeting and wasted water. Try to water as deeply as possible to encourage healthy roots without wasting water and creating damp areas that are difficult to mow. It is a pleasure to serve you all! Happy Summer!”

lawn areas, and we are continuing to spot spray, as needed, to control Virginia Button Weed and spurge. Overall, the lawn areas are looking good!

Mowing – We are continuing to perform the mowing preparations on a weekly basis, and as we move into the hottest part of the year we will continue to evaluate the mowing needs on a weekly basis.

Pruning –Hopefully, each of you has a decent understanding of our pruning standards and the processes that we are following. We have made one complete run through the community with pruning, and are continuing to make our rounds and prune as needed to meet these standards. Our pruning map that is displayed on the bulletin board across from the Craft room and a larger version on the wall near the Exercise room of the Clubhouse shows the entire property, broken down into sections titled “Area 1, Area 2, Area 3, etc.” I would like to clarify that these areas sometimes take longer than a week to complete. This means that if we are on “Area 1 section”, for example, and we are not able to complete all the needed pruning by the end of the week, we will still be in “Area 1” to begin the following week. “Area 2” will begin as soon as “Area 1” is completed and at that time, we will update the map in the Clubhouse to reflect this. During our first round of pruning, we performed mostly “pocket pruning” which is done by hand with hand-pruners. Some of you are familiar with this type of pruning as you’ve been present at our pruning presentations which are held each spring in the clubhouse. When we pocket prune, we make our cuts deeper into the plants in order to open them up so that light and air can penetrate into the plant and stimulate fuller, healthier growth. Our second round of pruning consists of “shearing” and “heading.” When we shear, we use our power shears to cut off the new shoots and provide an organized shape to the plants. We try to wait until the plants have all completed their spring flush of growth before we shear. This way, the shape of the newly-sheared plants will last longer until the next round of pruning. Heading also helps shape the plant but we use pruners and loppers to take larger sections out of the shrub where there are many new shoots growing from central locations on the outside of the

This article is from Transitions LifeCare about Heritage Pines homeowner Mary Toland -

A HERO AMOUNG US

SearStone, our local senior living community, has partnered with Transitions LifeCare (founded as Hospice of Wake County in 1979) to create the Ageless Hero Awards to recognize and honor the good work our local seniors have done for them and in service to others. On April 16, the 2015 Ageless Hero Awards Banquet was held at SearStone to honor the award winners and learn more about their achievements. Among the Ageless Hero Award Honorees was our very own Mary Toland. Mary was nominated for this award by James Butler, Director of Volunteer Services for Transitions LifeCare. Mary has been a volunteer with Transition LifeCare since January 2009. Since then, she has volunteered more than 100 hours at the Raleigh campus and hospice facility. Additionally, she has volunteered countless hours in the community recruiting other volunteers, fundraising and spreading awareness of the good work hospice does for their patients. Mary has a generous, kind, gentle, and serving spirit, yet she is a "get it done" kind of person. Those who have the privilege of knowing Mary will agree. Congratulations Mary. Transitions LifeCare is always looking for volunteers to assist them in their service to others.
