Clinical Psychology, Psychiatry, Family Therapy, Child Psychotherapy and a Play Specialist, for children and families with a child with developmental needs/disability. The service provides assessment, diagnosis, intervention and therapy for children and their families where there are emotional issues relating to special needs/disability. Who is it for? Children resident in City and Hackney aged 0-19 who are under the child development service multi-disciplinary teams. How and when can parents and carers access the service? Initially via a referral to the child development centre Consultant Paediatricians. Referrals can come from anyone who knows the child. Parents can refer if their child is already being seen at The Ark.

Child and Family Consultation Service

What is the service? The Child and Family Consultation Service is a place where professionals can help children, young people and their families in understanding and dealing with their mental health difficulties. We assess and if possible find ways of working with the child or young person and those who look after them to achieve change. The teams include Psychiatrists, Psychiatric, Social Workers, Psychotherapists, Psychologists, Family Therapists and Community Mental Health Nurses trained to work with children, young people and their families. Who is it for? Children and young people under the age of 18 and their families with emotional and behaviour difficulties. How and when can parents and carers access the service? The service does not accept self-referrals. Any professional working with a child, young person or their family can contact the Child and Family Consultation Service Team to discuss or make a referral.

Children’s Occupational Therapy Service

Children’s Occupational Therapists work with children/young people, their families and schools/nurseries to help make the most of their abilities and develop independence in everyday tasks such as dressing, playing, feeding and accessing the National Curriculum. In conjunction with L B Hackney Social Care Team, OT also provides:

An Equipment and Adaptation service for children with physical disabilities

Safer Environment service for children with severe learning and communication difficulties and associated challenging behaviour.

Who is it for? Children who have difficulties with everyday tasks due to a disability, co-ordination disorder, delay or sensory impairment. The service does not see children whose problems are purely due to an emotional difficulty. How and when can parents and carers access the service? Referral by health, education or social care professional, or via self-referral. Waiting list is less than 5 weeks Also drop-in sessions for parents of under-5s at: Ann Tayler Centre: 1.30 – 3 pm, 3rd Friday of the month Millfields Children’s Centre: 1 – 3pm 1st Monday of the month Stamford Hill Children’s Centre: 1-3pm, 1st Wednesday of the month

We promote the development of gross motor skills and function e.g. sitting, walking and the management of physical difficulties, through intervention and advice, in a variety of settings including home and school. Who is it for? We work with children and families in partnership with other involved professionals and agencies. How and when can parents and carers access the service? Referral is via a Health, Education or Social Service professional. What is the service? Community Paediatricians are specialists in the health and development of children. They can try to find out the cause of children’s developmental problems and advise about treatment, therapy and other specialist services to help your child. Who is it for? Children resident in City & Hackney aged 0-18 who have developmental difficulties or medical conditions which affect their learning and development. The Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia team offers a Hackney service to individuals at risk of having Sickle Cell Disease, Beta Thalassaemia Major and similar red blood cell types. We provide a targeted service to all newborn babies residing in City and Hackney through screening for Sickle Cell, Thalassaemia and other related red blood cell types. Who is it for?

Any one who has Sickle Cell Disease or Beta Thalassaemia Major or any other unusual hemoglobin type.

Any person who wishes to establish their Sickle Cell or Thalassaemia status.

Any carer of a patient /client with a Sickle Cell Disease or Beta Thalassaemia Major or trait. Any person wishing to know more about Sickle Cell

[email protected] What is the service? The team carries out comprehensive assessments of the needs of the child and family. The team is responsible for the whole range of social work tasks for children with disabilities and their families. They can provide domiciliary care, respite care (either within or outside the home) as well as referral to other services for family support (e.g. play schemes, other leisure activities and voluntary agencies). The service also runs a Sharing Care Scheme that provides specialist childminders. Direct Payments can also provide many of the services provided by the team. Who is it for? Specialist social work service for children and young people with moderate to severe disabilities and their families. How and when can parents and carers access the service? Families can refer directly by telephoning and asking to speak to the duty social worker. Referrals can be taken from anybody who has concerns about a child or young person with a disability or who feels their family needs more support.

We are a group of parents of disabled children and young adults.. We try to meet regularly, but this depends on hospital appointments/admissions etc. We share experiences, information and generally support each other and we are in regular phone contact just to assure one another that we are not alone. We also invite professionals to come and talk to us, for example about Direct Payments, short breaks etc. Who is it for? Parents of disabled children and young adults: most of our children have profound disabilities and complex medical care needs. How and when can parents and carers access the service? Just ring us!

Hackney Families Together

Hackney Families Together is a forum for parents to meet and to find out about and influence services in Hackney. It is run by a steering group comprising parents, and representatives from both the voluntary sector (currently Hackney Family Backup and the Carers’ Centre) and the Statutory Service (Education, Health and The Ark). HFT meets 9 times per year and each meeting is themed on a topic of interest to parents, such as short breaks, play provision, access to benefits, housing and managing behaviour. Speakers are invited not just to give parents information, but to take back 2-3 action points brought up by parents with the aim of improving services. Once a year there is also a Pampering Event. Who is it for? Any parent or carer of a child with a disability or special educational need in Hackney. How and when can parents and carers access the service? Call the Carers’ Centre to be put on the mailing list.

The project is based within a specialist integrated children’s centre in Hackney and is jointly funded by the PCT and Hackney social care. Services include: Information, advice, support and advocacy, regular newsletter and Events as well as a free Key leisure centre discount card. Who is it for?

A child/young person is eligible to register if s/he lives in Hackney, is aged 0-19 years and has a disability or additional needs which mean they are unable to do the everyday things that children/young people of a similar age can do, with an expectation that the difficulty will last a year or more and have a serious impact on that child’s opportunities. This may be due to a physical or sensory disability, learning difficulties, severe, communication difficulties, developmental, emotional, behavioural, complex medical or mental health problems or any combination of these.

Apples and pears is a staffed, open-access adventure playground, open to all children. It is not a crèche or child-minding service. Who is it for? The playground is open to any child who wishes to play. Children under 5 must be accompanied at all times by a parent or carer. How can parents and carers access the service? Apples and Pears is an open access site (i.e. the children are free to come and go as they please). If you do not want your child to leave the site it is your responsibility to tell them and trust them not to do so. When a child leaves the site he/she is no longer the responsibility of Apples and Pears. In school holidays please do not send your child before 9:30. If you intend to pick them up please do so by 4pm at the latest. After this time the park will be closed and therefore your child will no longer be supervised by our staff. If you have a problem please telephone us. Children must be at least 6yrs to attend. If we feel a child appears to be younger than 6yrs or older than 15yrs, we may ask for proof of age.

Laburnum Boat Club is a Hackney based charity providing opportunities for young people and their families to participate in a range of water based activities, including canoeing, narrow boating, power boating, sailing and residential trips, as well as day activities such as cooking, table tennis or bowling. The club encourages all children and adults with disabilities to use its services. It has 2 sports clubs for young people with disabilities, a club for adults with mental health issues, an inclusive youth club and Family club and wheelchair accessible narrow boat. Who is it for? The sports clubs are for young people aged 9-21 with disabilities: the Friday club is for adults with mental health issues: the youth club is for 9-19year olds and the family club is for all local families. The adult kayaking club is for over 16s of any ability. The narrow boats can be hired by groups or individuals. How and when can parents and carers access the service?
