February 24th 2012 Anthony Clawson Page 3 Hey everyone, welcome back after a good and exciting weekend. For this week for the Agenda page we will be look at pages 102 and 103. These pages are from February 20th to February 26th and they talk about many great things th at will make you surprised! This month’s character trait is integrity. Integrity is a noun and it means Moral soundness; inherent complex of attributes that determine a person’s moral and ethical actions and reactions; unreduced or unbroken completeness. If you have integrity then you are probably honest and people probably like you. People can probably always trust you, with just about anything like maybe something personal or a secret for example. Integrity is always something good to have! This week the vocabulary is hexagon. A hexagon is a noun and it means a figure with six angles. An example of this would be I drew a shape with six sides and it was a hexagon and then my mom hung it up on the refrigerator. For this year in this week in history on 1868 February 23rd W.E.B. Dubois was born. W.E.B Dubois was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-‐Africanist, author, and editor.
Born in western Massachusetts, Dubois grew up in a tolerant community and experienced little racism as a child. After graduating from Harvard, where he
was the first African American to earn a doctorate, he became a professor of history, sociology, and economics at Atlanta University. Dubois was one of the co-‐founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. Dubois was also known for the Niagara Fall movement. What this was is Dubois was trying to get service like buying a hotel room in New York but no one would give them service. What they did is go into Canada and got perfect service and Dubois wrote all about it. For this week’s study tip it is get into the habit of
actively studying each day. If you do this over and over again not only will you get good grades but you will never forget to study. If you so something for so long of a time and keep doing over again you will defiantly never
forget. So everyone keep studying for you can get those good grades and never for get to study!

Hey there Mustangs! This week, as some of you may know, was the week of Mardi Gras! Our French teacher Mrs. Knippen and all of our French students participated in a Mardi Gras of our own. On Tuesday the 21st, Mardi Gras, the French club held a breakfast that started before school, in which, they had French food and festivities. Want to know
more? Keep reading on to find out more about our wonderful French club!
Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday.” The name Mardi Gras came from the parading of a fat ox through Paris on this day. This ox
was paraded through town to remind people that they weren’t allowed to eat meat during Lent. Lent runs from Ash Wednesday and
goes through Easter Sunday. However, Mardi Gras moves, it can be anywhere from February 3rd to March 9th, but it depends on when Easter falls. The French people who came to America brought their Mardi Gras customs with them, and the most famous festival of Mardi Gras is in New Orleans in Louisiana. Although, Mardi Gras parades happen all throughout the world. A few examples would be Biloxi, Rio de Janeiro, Nice, Binche, and Viareggio.
In Southern Italy, people dress up in costumes and put on an ancient play. In Rio de Janeiro, people dance in the streets. In Nice, people wear huge masks and parade through the streets. In Binche, people dress in colorful clown costumes and dance in the streets. Our French club has their own festivities that they partake in, such as the Mardi Gras float contest. The
float contest is a “competition” between members of the French club. The members are supposed to pick a partner to participate with and build a float that pertains to France or even just a fun float that’s aesthetically pleasing. As the floats
are finished they are placed in a clear trophy cabinet, and stay there so the teachers can vote on them to decide the winners. When the winner is chosen they receive a prize of different
sorts that’s usually vary each year.

February 24, 2012 Andrew Hoffer Page 6 The Allen East Choir has been very busy lately. They are practicing for their Spring Concert which will be held on Friday, May 18th. The choir will be having a Spring Concert on Friday, May 18th. This concert is the last choir concert for this year and the last one ever for the seniors. The seniors will sing a special song of their choosing called a senior song in this concert. Every senior this year plans on singing a senior song but only three have decided on their song. Those few decided students are; Alan Lemaster, who will sing “Good Riddance” by Green Day, Ashley Neal, who will sing “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” (Yuna Ito’s version), and Kayla Fox, who will sing “Country Strong” by Gwyneth Paltrow. So far it looks like it will be a great concert with three great songs picked out already and more to come! Everyone should come out May 18th and enjoy the concert! Those songs so far are:
§ “Sing We for Love Together” by Giovanni Gastoldi
§ “Wade in the Water” by Roger Emerson
§ “Ave verum Corpus” by Wolgang Amadeus Mozart
Here is an interview with Ashley Neal, one of the senior members of the choir. Q: How is your senior year in choir going? A: It is going very well I’m the only senior in my class so I’m like the leader. Q: How do you like the current selection of songs for the Spring Concert? A: I love “Wade in the Water” it is a great powerful piece and draws lots of emotions out of people, but I don’t like “Sing We for Love Together” it’s too high. Q: What is your favorite memory in choir? A: Being with Lenzy Strunk, she makes me laugh but some of the best are singing “Let it Snow” with Levi Hoy and Caleb Burkey in the “Sheik of Araby”. Q: How do you feel about this being your last year to sing for Allen East? A: Naturally I’m sad, going to miss out on crying at every show because I get super emotional. Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
A: “To everybody in choir, sing with all you got and all your heart because that’s what truly matters.”
Febuary 24th, 2012 John Stephens Page 7 For this week’s editorial we are covering senioritis. Senioritis is a real disability rather than a disease. It has been affecting American teens for decades now. Senioritis occurs when an individual has been going to school for so long they are counting down the days until graduation and they tend to be tardy and absent from school more than usual.
Many people think it will never happen to them but it really can. Senioritis affects millions of American teens every year. An even more shocking fact is that senioritis is occurring in juniors more than ever before. Symptoms of senioritis include a lack of motivation, drop in academic performance, the desire to drop out of school, and coasting. Coasting is going through classes with very little effort and concentration. Other symptoms include truancy and frequent
tardiness along with procrastination. If you find yourself playing games or constantly being on the internet when you should be doing school work you may be at a predisposition for senioritis. There is no known cure yet for senioritis but with advances in technology and teaching techniques senioritis to some students may be a thing of the past. The Allen East School district has been working diligently to fight against this disabilitating disorder
by investing in technology. Senioritis is a chronic disability that cannot be stopped but if you just look at the big picture of school it may help slow down its effects. In fact when the Allen East community received a new school there was a major decline in cases of senioritis. Many other school districts are seeing similar results. Senioritis will never be completely gone but schools are making an effort to prevent it. Students

February 24, 2012 Amanda Baker page 19 Ms. Advice is back with more questions asked by the advice seeking Allen East students. Let’s see what problems your peers are having this week.
Dear Ms. Advice, So I have this crazy zebra print obsession. It is just so adorable and striped. It is all different colors and stuff. How can I get over this freaky obsession? -Jimmy Dear Jimmy, I suggest you slowly wean yourself off of zebra print by getting rid of your zebra things. You will slowly forget about zebra print considering you will not see it everyday anymore. Dear Ms. Advice, I’m going to Apollo next year but I don’t want to leave all my friends, and these wonderful Allen East teachers. I will be leaving my best senior friend and my other best friends too. I don’t want to make new friends because I’d feel like I’m replacing my irreplaceable old friends. What do I do? I need help! -Joe
Dear Joe, If your friends were good friends, they would let you go. They obviously won’t want you to go because they love you, but it’s still your decision. If you make new friends it doesn’t mean you will lose your old ones if they were true. Hope that helps! Dear Ms. Advice, I’m getting my first vehicle. I’m not sure if I want a car or a truck, because the gas mileage for trucks is higher than cars, but I’d much rather have a truck. Dear Gus, This is your first car. You should save your money for a truck for your second vehicle, so you can get the one you really want when you are more confident in your choice, and more confident at driving so you don’t bang up your brand new truck.
February, 24, 2012 Cole Meyer Page 20 Hey there Mustangs I’m back with another exciting and informative advice column. This week is just like the other weeks but there are different problems and different solutions. It would be to your benefit to read this page because you could
benefit from what advice I give to the people who asked.Dear Mr. Advice, I just recently got into some trouble at home, and it caused a lot of things in my life to change, like the relationship with my parents, girlfriend and my relationship with myself. I have no idea what to do. How can I get things to go back to the way they were before this happened? Sincerely, Struggling Dear Struggling, That’s a really hard thing that has a huge effect on your emotions. Something similar happened to me before. From a personal standpoint I felt broken for a while. It is important to remain optimistic no matter what. Take time to think things over and show everyone that you’re sorry for your mistake. Everything should work out in the end. Sincerely, Mr. Advice Dear Mr. Advice, I am having troubles making deadlines some of my classes at school. I’m always rushing at the last minute to get my homework and other projects done. If I keep it up I will get bad grades in my classes and this could affect my grade point average. How can I improve on making deadlines to avoid taking a big hit in my grades? Sincerely, Not Done Dear Not Done, That’s not good at all! Missing a deadline could mean setting back the rest of the class. The easiest thing to do is to come in and work on your stuff during your study hall that is if you have any. Another option is to stay after school and do it. The best choice would be to take your work home and work on it there. Sincerely, Mr. Advice
Dear Mr. Advice, I have been having a problem with my anger lately. It seems like everything is getting under my skin and I have no clue why. I am usually able to control it but lately I just can’t do it. I am at my wits end and I feel like I’m going to flip out on someone. Can you give me some tips to on how to avoid an angry outbreak? Sincerely, Anger Management Dear Anger Management, That sounds really bad, I totally feel for you in this situation. You can’t let your anger get the best of you, but if it does it means you’re human. Here are some tips to overcoming your anger issue. Pick up a hobby like playing guitar, golfing, playing video games, or something along those lines. Find a way to channel your anger by writing music, poems, or even drawing. If none of those work talk to someone about it because it’s not good to let your anger build up inside. Sincerely, Mr. Advice Dear Mr. Advice, The school talent show is coming up and I would like to participate in it. The thing is I have no clue what I should do. Can you help me out? Sincerely, No Idea Dear No Idea, That sounds like it would be fun to participate in. Some stuff you could do is sing, play an instrument, or tell jokes. It all comes down to what your talent is and how good you are at that talent. Whatever comes to your mind first is probably the best choice. Sincerely, Mr. Advice

I hate and I mean HATE roller coasters, and the reason I say this is because first off there a bazillion feet off the ground! That’s not necessary at all. Now if they were two feet off the ground I’d be cool with them but no there wayyyyy to high! Then another reason is because when I was 8 my family went to cedar point, and my mom got me on a roller coaster and told me that the hills were really little and that it really isn’t that big. And yeah she lied, so now I won’t even go near one.

That feeling that you get when you are carrying something large down a set of stairs or going down them in the dark and you think there is one more step. Your body freaks out with that last moment when you’re trying to decide if there is one more step or if you are on the bottom of the stairs now. It leaves you a little shaky from the experience and I hate it.

My least favorite class has got to be Algebra. This is because I seriously do not like numbers. They freak me out and I’m not good at anything that has to do with math. I wish math was never invented. I’m probably not ever going to be in a life or death situation where I have to know what a polynomial graph is. I’m just saying.

I would have to say that I do not like it when people are out to get attention. I hate it when they do stupid things so people notice them. People are beautiful the way they are, they don’t need to do odd, or annoying things to get attention. They either look needy or weird, or, as I said before, annoying with the way they act. I, also, don’t enjoy it when people act depressed all the time. I’m an optimistic person, and I suffer from extreme anxiety which could cause me to be depressed. I think if I can handle that, they can handle a non-existent problem, like not getting a part in a play or something along those lines. I don’t enjoy cocky know-it-alls, either. Be you, and don’t force yourself on other people. I also can’t stand people who lie and are dishonest.
