step. They are nine months old, and are vaccinated and neutered.

Their photos do not show how lovely these two youngcats are. Dolly

is a petite long haired beauty and Ted is the handsome shorthairedone.

Our fosterer says: These cats have at some stage been mistreated as

every time I moved my arm they jumped back as if I was going to hit

them. They are now beginning to trust me and havestarted playing.

Dolly and Ted are very close to each other so we would like to ind them a home where they can stay

together. As we do not know how they would react to young children or other animals a quiet home

would be best.

foage.One of my favourite

shrubs is Amelanchierlamarkii or Snowymesphilus, which is wellnamed as the shrub is covered

with white owers in Aprilin amongst the pale, bronzynew leaves. Although it likesmoisture retentive, lime free

soil I have grown it on neutralto alkaline soil.

If you want a climber, thenClematis alpine and Clematismacropetala varieties are inower in April. Both have

bell like owers in pale pink,or blue on vigorous growth

which will happily covertrellis. Easy to grow in a sunny

sheltered site or Clematisalpina will take a moreexposed position, in welldrained soil. Flowersare produced on stemsgrown the previous

year so cut back afterowering.

Spring perennials forground cover in shade

includes Pulmonaria

with their blue, white, redand pink owers, dependingon variety, then attractivefoliage for the rest of the

year. Good for smotheringweeds in shady places but youmust keep their roots moistor you will have a collapsedplant in dry spells! Anothershade loving perennial arethe Epimediums. There are anumber of varieties that will

produce tiny delicate, paleyellow, white or pink

owers in spring withrounded heart shapedleaves for the rest ofthe year colouring inautumn.

Once the weather iswarmer, you can start

planting carrots, lettuce,radishes and other salads

outside. Look out for frostsand cover small apple or pear

blossom with eece to try andprotect it from frost. Last yearI lost the crop on one appletree but the second, owering

later, gave me some fruit. Alsodivide congested clumps ofperennials such as Geraniumsor Hostas.

If you like visiting gardensI would suggest checkingout the National GardensScheme which raisesmoney for charities throughopening gardens. You can

see local gardens with ideasfor planting you can use

yourself and often buyplants. Saighton Grangenear Chester is greatfor spring owers and

bulbs and Briareldnear Burton will give
