Hesston College Nursing Pin
The shape of the pin is a shield,
symbolizing faith; the lamp
represents knowledge; the sunrise,
wheat, and plow signify Kansas;
the initials identify Hesston
College as the setting for learning;
the colors are red for courage,
white for integrity, and gold
for the worthiness to care; the
cross represents Christ who gives
purpose to live and the
desire to serve.

Midfielder Megan Gongwer, Goshen, Ind., finds the net for the historic first goal for the Hesston College women’s soccer team. The team, in its inaugural season, took to the soccer field at Hesston College for its historic opening game Friday, August 31, against Ozark Christian College (Joplin, Mo.). The Larks proceeded to score eight more goals to win 9-0. With the women’s team victory, Coach Kurt Hostetler garnered his first college soccer win as a coach, then added his second win of the night when the men’s soccer team downed their counterparts from Ozark Christian 5-0. The women’s team finished their season in mid-October with a 6-6 record. Coach Hostetler said the women’s soccer team “greatly exceeded all expectations. I was pleased with our record, our resilience when we lost, and the willingness to learn. We had a team full of quality individuals with fun and unique personalities that made the season enjoyable.”

Two new plaques installed in Hess Hall
Two new plaques have been added to Hess Hall in Hesston College’s Kropf Center, thanks to the Academy Class of 1947. The plaques were informally dedicated during a gathering of 21 Academy class mem-bers and their spouses Saturday, September 22, during Homecoming Weekend 2007 (See Academy ’47 class photo on Page 15). One plaque contains a replica of the class emblem and terrazzo floor that the class funded when construc-tion began on the original Hess Hall in 1946, along with the names of the class officers and others involved in this class project. The terrazzo floor was installed inside the east entry-

The original emblem and the ter-razzo floor were lost when Hess Hall was demolished in the summer of 1990. Hess Hall was named after Abraham Lincoln (A.L.) Hess, the school’s major benefactor from its founding in 1909 to Hess’ death in 1920. For the complete story, visit www.hesston.edu/hesstoncollegetoday.
