Hero's journey in The AvengersTRANSCRIPT
Act 1 Ordinary World – Tony’s Ordinary world consisted of him trying to make green energy with his Arc reactor, while trying to make the world a better place by being Iron Man. Tony Stark lives in the home he built in New York called Stark tower, His hero’s journey starts and ends here. He’s in a relationship with Pepper Potts. At this point of the film there’s a glimpse to what Tony’s life is like before he joins the Avengers. The call to adventure – Tony is called to adventure when S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson pays him a visit to try to enlist Tony to join the new team Nick Fury had put together called the Avengers. Refusal of the call – Having already been called by Fury for the Avengers previously, Tony refuses the call, because he likes his life the way it is, Pepper however takes the information Phil was offering. Meeting the mentor-‐ Tony had already met the mentor (Nick Fury) previously. Fury helped Tony during the becoming of and being Iron man. Crossing the Threshold-‐ Tony crosses the threshold when he shows up during the battle between Captain America and the villain (Loki). By helping to capture the villain and taking him to S.H.I.E.L.D.S headquarters he has officially crossed the threshold into the special world. Act 2 Tests, Allies and Enemies-‐ Tony gets into a battle with the Norse god Thor on their first encounter, however all is resolved when Captain America appears to take control of the situation and to get them to trust each other. Tony also meets Bruce Banner (Hulk) who is also a scientist, and he gravitates toward Bruce more than the rest of the team. Approach-‐ As tony and the rest of the team try to figure out Loki’s plan they become closer, however this changes when Loki manipulates the team and Captain America discovers that S.H.I.E.L.D. has bigger plans than they initially revealed. The team falls apart and Loki is able to escape. The ordeal, Death & Rebirth-‐ Tony tries to repair the helicarrier they’re on before it crashes into the ground, therefore putting his life at risk, although he succeeds in repairing the aircraft, Bruce and Thor are gone and Agent Phil is killed by Loki, disbanding the team almost entirely. The Reward, Seizing the sword-‐ The reward in this case is that Tony was able to fix the helicarrier and keep his life. Nick Fury informs the last of the team that Agent Phil was a true believer in the Avengers initiative. This talk motivates Tony and the team, and Tony becomes truly committed to the cause.
The road back-‐ Tony returns to Stark tower in a final confrontation with Loki, narrowly avoids falling to his death by using his new Iron Man suit, and begins to fight the invasion, he discovers that S.H.I.E.L.D. decided to override Nick Fury and send a nuclear weapon to Manhattan. Act 3 Resurrection-‐ Tony realizes that he is the only one who is now able to save the day by taking hold of the missile and steering it into the portal where the aliens are coming from. However doing this is a one way trip for Tony as his suit will malfunction when he goes through the portal and wont be able to make it back through. This is when the audience are able to see how much Tony has changed since the beginning of the film. When the missile goes off the blast actually pushes Tony back through the portal before it closes. This is when he is resurrected on a personal level as well as physically. Return with Elixir-‐ The elixir in the film is the Avengers reputation, they have become a force to be reckoned with and are now a solid team. Tony is back to his ordinary world with Pepper but has changed as a person.
