    A NAMELESS HORROR

Behemoth was the first major hivefleet thatinvaded the Imperium, and its detection

around the Tyran system gave the xenos thedread name Tyranid .

Under the auspices and l eadership ofMagos Varnak, the ocean planet of Tyranhoused a monitoring station with fourhundred staff. Swarmed by a cloud of l ivingships, and mysteriously unabl e to send awarning via astropath, Varnak ordered adata codex made of all the informationgarnered from the attackers before hidingit deep in a bore shaft. A last garbl edmessage, of the skies of Tyran turned black

with beasts, escaped the horror, before theplanet shuddered and died.

    INQUISITOR KRYPTMAN

The respected Inquisitor Kryptman receivedword of the last message months after theattack. After a journey buffeted by warpphenomena, the Inquisitor's ship translatedinto the system nearly a year later. Unableto reconcile the dead, dry world hefound with oceanic Tyran, the Inquisitordescended to the surface of the planet.

After a long search, the Inqui sitor andhis team uncovered the data-codex hiddenby Varnak, and the terribl e knowledge itcontained of this most al ien of threats.Returning to his ship , Kryptman thendiscovered the acid-eaten hulk of theInvestigation , a ship declared missingmonths before the attack.

Crew missing, and the ship drifting,it was clear the same enemy that haddestroyed Tyran had been at work here. Theimplications were grave: this threat was notconfined to one world.

    RACE TO THANDROS

Shrouded beneath a shadow on the warp,Kryptman's astropath was unable to senda warning to the Imperium. Desperateto contact his superiors and colleagues,Kryptman forged for Thandros, the nearesttelepathica booster matrix.

On arrival, he found the planets ofThandros as l ifeless as Tyran, the poorly-

defended miners long-gone and the worldsthemselves shrunken and d ead. Salvagingthe remains of the matrix, the team sentwarning to t he Imperium, and was orderedto Ultramar, to rendezvous with themobilising Ultramarines chapter.

    PRELIMINARY BATTLES

The planet Belios IV was the site of theUltramarines’ f irst contact with the Tyranid

menace. The Ultramarines 5th Companylaunched a fierce assault, but were beatenback. The Dauntless class l ig ht cruiserBenedictio , along with her escorts, wasdispatched home ahead carrying geneseedfrom the fallen marines.

After some initial skir mishing with Tyranidvanguard flotil las, the main hive fleetlaunched an assault on Prandium, a world inthe Ultramar region. The Ultramarine fleetwas engaged in a b attle where the BattleBarge Seditio Opprimere was reduced to

a near hulk, and Ultramarines unit s on theground were slowly whittled down. Thesurvivors, led by Chaplain Cassius, took to

just three Thunderhawk gunships to escape.

    THE STORM GATHERS

In 745.M41, the soldiers and citizens ofUltramar were amongst the first defendersof the Imperium to encounter the emergentTyranid menace. Marneus Calgar, Lord ofthe vaunted Ultramarines Chapter of Space

Marines, sent his f leet in a sally againstthe bioships of Hi ve Fleet Behemoth, highabove their capital wor ld of Macragge. Theire of the Ultramarines had b een raised, and the entire might of the Chapter nowstood against them. No foe, in the ten-thousand year history of the Chapter, had ever prevailed against their g atheredmight, and the marines’ spirits were high.

However, nothing in the annals of theChapter prepared the Ultr amarines forwhat they faced. A seething sea of l iving

ships lurked in the void, their numbersbreathtaking and horrifying. Undaunted, the marines engaged the enemy i n rakingsalvoes, following the holy Codex Astartes. However, such were the Tyranid’s numbers, the Ultramarines tactics were futile.

    INVASION OF MACRAGGE

Outrider vessels of the Tyranid fleetsoon attacked Macragge, sweeping asidethe Ultramarines’ Strike Cruisers. Soon, thousands of spore-birthed beasts scurriedand ramped across Macragge, even as theUltramarines fleet rall ied and counter-

attacked. The Vae Victus led the assault, and five Strike Cruisers crippled two of thelarger Tyranid vessels. The Strike CruiserCassius  was destroyed, taking a dozenTyranid vessels with it as its plasma drivewent critical. The four remaining st rikecruisers destroyed the two crippled bio-ships and then shadowed the hive fleetwhile conducting repairs.

The Benedictio , having met with troubleen route from Belios IV, arrived in Macraggeorbit bereft of her escorts, damaged, andwith fighting rag ing aboard ship. Theship broke up in the upp er reaches ofMacragge’s atmosphere. Lieutenant Varras,a Chapter serf, crash-landed an Aquilalander bearing the precious gene seed .Calgar dispatched the Second Companyto recover the g eneseed, rescue survivors, and terminate any Tyranids they found. What was to follow w ould be the openingskirmishes of the Battle for Macragge.

    COLD STEEL RIDGE

The Battle of Cold Steel Ridge was foughtto delay t he vast Tyranid swarm as it sweptacross the frozen northern seas. MarneusCalgar himself led this b old rearguardaction, deploying the Second Companyand elements of the First, Fifth, and TenthCompanies to slow the aliens’ advance andeliminate key hive control organisms. Theirvital goal was t o buy time while the PolarFortresses, defended by the First Company, were made ready to face the onslaught ofthe Behemoth.

The Ultramarines’ stub born defenceof Cold Steel Ri dge cost them the livesof many battle brothers for l ittle gain.Marneus Calgar himself was woundedgravely at the height of the battle,

necessitatinghis withdrawal to his battlebarge, high in orbit aboveMacragge. The Tyranid swarm wasbarely slowed and now nothi ng stoodbetween it and the Polar fortresses.

Calgar withdrew to the orbiting Battle

Barge Octavius. Refusing all but the mostvital medical attention, t he Master ofMacragge took command of the fleet, andsought to save his world from destruction.

    TERMINATORS

Crucially Calgar, master of strategy, hadprepared his defences well , leaving thefortresses manned by t he planetary defenceAuxilia and the awesome titans of the LegioPraetor. The crown of this powerful forcewere the eli te Astartes of the Ultramarine’s

veteran First Company, led by the dauntlessCaptain Invictus. Most of these staunchwarriors were formed into fearsomeTerminator squads, equipped wi th tacticaldreadnought armour and the best personalweaponry in the Imperium.

With the bulk of the Chapter locked i ncombat in the glitteri ng vastness of space, the First Company grimly looked to theirdefences. Company upon company ofeager and well- trained guardsmen werestationed behind a cunning and massive

nest of trenchworks, basti ons and redoubts.Facing invasion for the first time on theirhome soil, and with a hundred heroes attheir head, the defenders were confident oftheir victory.

Far out in the i ce fields of the polarregions, the hideous spore scracked openas they hit the snowy ground, disgorginga ghastly cargo of Genestealers and otherTyranid shock organisms. Soon, thousandsof Tyranids were teeming across the wastes.

In space, their loads disgorged, the hive

ships turned about ponderously. Desperateto prevent their escape, and with theancient wisdom of the Cod ex fail ing him,Calgar reluctantly gave the order to pursuethe Behemoth into the deep.

Back on Macragge, the Tyranids gathered. As thoughguided by some malig n and monstrous intell igence, theswarm turned as one and began to surge towards the polarfortresses. Reaching weapon range, the d efenders beganto fire. Sickle-clawed beasts bounded for ward across

snowy plains pitted and scored by lasers, their numbersblurring individuals into a shifting mass of sliced hooksand piercing talons. Other monsters wheeled through thebleak, grey skies on leathery wi ngs and drooled their l iquidfire on the defenders below. The ear-splitting rattle ofbolters and the thump of arti l lery drowned out the bestial,hate-fi l led screams of the swarming Tyranids, but theyswept on wi th alien ferocity.

The size and power of the implacable swarm wasunbelievable; unprecedented in Ultramar’s ten-thousandyear history. In spite of the arctic cold, weapon barrelsglowed red-hot and jammed,

and though the fortresscontained stockpiles formonths of siege, ammunitionbegan to run low after merehours. The snows aroundthe fortresses were stainedarterial p urple wi th Tyranidichor for acres around, butthe horde stretched to thehorizon, and did not falter. At the northern fortress thebeasts overran the wallsusing the steaming piles oftheir own dead for cover.Titans were dragged downand ripped apart by sheerweight of numbers, l ikelions being swarmed ov er bysolider ants.

Even the Terminators, heroes of a hundredcampaigns, could notstand against the Tyranidsin hand-to-hand fi ghting.Six-limbed, armed and

armoured in shining chitin, the creatures spr ang forwardwith blinding swiftness, their claws l ashing out torip through ceramite andadamantium with impossibleease. The Ultramarines hadto rely on the heavy short-range firepower of theirstorm bolters, heavy flamersand assault cannons to bringdown the foe.

But it was not enough...Slowly but surely, the FirstCompany were forcedback out of their defensivepositions and into the darktunnels below their fortress…

The remaining First Companydetachments at t he southernfortress were wiped out late

in the batt le, attemptingto recapture a vital bastion

    overrun by the Tyranids.

Vig go In vic tus is the re no wn ed Li on ofMacragge, Captain of the Ultramarine’sfirst company, a veteran of hundreds ofcampaigns and uncounted battles.

Noted from youth for h is leadershipqualities and the abil ity to inspire thoseunder his command, Invictus is theRegent of Ultramar, expected to leadthe Chapter should the Lord Macraggeever fal l in battle. Despite the honour ofsuch a call ing, Invictus dreads such a daydue to his deep respect and love for theMaster of the Ultramarines.

As a sign of his favour, Calgar giftedInvictus with an ancient and precious

archeotech weapon from the dark daysof Heresy; the sole extant plasma blaster.

Invictus is marked by his cold humour,single-minded dedication to theChapter, and is possessed of a genius ineliciting the best from those under hiscommand; never accepting setback, letalone defeat...

As a young Obediator, Holon Arcadiusspent innumerable hours poring overvolumes of Chapter history in t heLibrarium, and at every tur n he has seen

the horror that the xenos breeds haveinfl icted upon humanit y.

A driven and gifted pyromancer,Arcadius progressed to Epistolary, hismind a fortress and a weapon. He loathes the alien hordes to an evengreater level than is required of aMarine by doctrine.

He especially hates those who employthe power of the w arp, spitting venom oftheir ‘dark perversion’ of his Emperor-given gifts in f rothing diatribes. Theopportunity to use h is own powersagainst xenos wit ches provides Arcadiuswith particular satisfaction.

Nero Dardinius is the sergeant of thefirst squad of the first company of th eUltramarines, a rank that brings t hehonorific ‘Brother-Captain’. It is anhonour that he strives t o l ive up toevery day of his l i fe. He seeks to dothis by following the honoured words ofGuil l iman to the let ter, never strayingfrom his holy text of battle.

This bull-headed adherance hasserved him and his men well over thelong centuries and made se rgeantDardinius an excellent source of tact icaladvice when it is needed most.

Softly spoken and conservative , hispersonal qualities contrast wit h those ofthe Lion of Macragge, and has led to afierce rivalry, kept from confl ict only byNero’s dutiful and sanguine nature.

The most recent promotion to t he firstcompany, Sinon Rubicus was advancedto the veterans from his role as a l inesergeant of a tactical squad in the thirdcompany.

Long held back by Captain Fabian forhis irreplacable experience, Rubicuslonged for many years to join thegreatest heroes of his chapter, fightingalongside them in the holy armour of theTerminator. As such he sees SergeantConjectus as an inspirational figure, andstrives to emulate his mastery of combat.

Rubicus is unusual in having first-

hand contact with the Tyranids, having assisted in drivin g off what wasretrospectively-named Hive Fleet Per seusa century before.

Ion is forever see king to expand and

improve his mastery of the close-rangedmartial disciplines, customarily fieldinghis squad as assault terminators orvanguard veterans. This focus hasled to him being fir st choice for anyfrontal assault; and winn ing him the

Vic to ry La ur el s in in te r-co mp an y Ho no urCombat no less than six times.

Although the doctrines of Guil l iman’sblessed codex espouse a range ofbattlefield roles as having equalweighting, Captain Invictus is happy toallow Trojus Ion to indulge his passionas it gives t he first company a hard coreof close combat experts to draw on intimes of need.

Regarded as t he Chapter’s foremostexpert in the use and application ofTactical Dreadnought Armour, MoritonConjectus won particular honour forhis squad during the purging of theSpace Hulk Tears of Rust . Conjectus’application of the doctrine containedwithin the Codex Astartes to th e fluidsituation of the cleansing saved days ofbattle and many l ive s. His quick-wittedactions and surety of command earnedhim a noted commendation from LordCalgar himself .

Since then, Invictus has never askedthe sergeant to deploy f or battlein anything other than his belovedTerminator armour.

    SPACE MARINE CAPTAIN

The Captains of the Space Marines are all

mighty champions of humanity; experiencedwarriors with unmatched skil l at arms andhundreds of years of tactical experience todraw upon.

Captains add +2 to their combat score.Additionally, they follow the same r ulesas Sergeants in respect to redrawingcommand points.

    PLASMA BLASTER

Plasma Blasters are ancient and rareartefacts, few of which sti l l function in the

41st millennium. Only the mightiest heroesof a Chapter would be granted the honourof carrying one into battle. These arcaneguns combine the portabil ity of a StormBolter with the d estructive potential of aplasma gun. Their only downside is theircomparatively slow rate of f ire.

Plasma Blasters follow all the rules forStorm Bolters, with t he exception that theykil l on a 5+. Additionally, a plasma blastercannot fire on Overwatch  as it cannotsustain such a high rate of f ire.

    AIR DUCTS

Some areas of the northern polar fortress

are riddled with air ducts large enough toallow humanoid creatures passage. Whilethe marines of the First Company are notagile enough to make use of them, theyallow Genestealers swift passage throughthe fortress, unseen by human eyes.

Air ducts are marked on the appropriatemission maps in brown and are treated l ikecorridors with the following exceptions.• Genestealers, Lictors and Blips may enter an air

duct for 2APs and exit for 1AP. They must enterand exit using the square directly in front of theair duct: they may not move diagonally. Otherwise,

they move through them exactly l ike corridors.• Blips in corridors that convert adjacent to an air

vent may not place Genestealers in the air duct, and vice-versa. Models that cannot be placed arelost as normal.

    • Space Marines may not enter or draw line of sightinto or through an air duct.

    • Space Marines may not f ire any weapons into theair duct, with the single exception of the HeavyFlamer. The Marine must be directly in l ine with theair duct without any intervening models. Treat theduct as a separate board section.

    • Psychic powers that do not require l ine ofsight may target the air ducts as though they

were corridors.• A Marine stood in the square directly in front of

the air duct exit may be attacked in close assaultby a Genestealer in the last square of the air duct.Fight combat as normal, but if the result is a drawthen the Genestealer wins. In either case thewinning model is placed in the exit square.

    • Terminators attacked in close assault by aGenestealer in the air vent wi ll not be able to fireany Overwatch shots before the combat, as he hasno warning before the Genestealer attacks!

    LICTORS

Lictors are deadly Tyranid vanguardorganisms that specialise in infi ltrationand scouting. They will infi ltrate ahead ofthe Tyranid swarm using their incrediblechameleonic powers to remain undetected, then striking f rom the shadows beforedisappearing once more, leaving onl y deathin their wake.

Lictors follow the rules for Broodlords inall respects, although their survivabilityshould be attributed to their inhumanreflexes and chameleonic scales rather than

the fighting prowess and psychic might ofthe Broodlord.

This section contains rules for new models and equi pment. They are not used in every scenario in this campaign pack,

     just in the scenarios indicated.

A lictor vanguard organism regards thecarapace of a fallen Ultramarine veteran.

    ARRIVAL OF BAKKA

Battlefleet Bakka of Segmentum Tempestus, composed ofover two hundred ships, emerged from the warp in front

of the Tyranid fleet. The Ultramar fleet clumped int o atight wedge to keep the Tyranids at b ay with their massedbatteries while the Tempestus vessels spread i nto a broadavellan cross. As the Tyranids engaged Calgar’s ships thearms of the cross formed by Lord Admiral Rath’s f leetclosed in around them like the jaws of a trap. The battlewas short and brutal as the Tyranids were caught in thecrossfire between the two fleets. Though out numberedby over three to one the Imperial ships blasted their waythrough the hive fleet and scattered the bio-ships intosmall groups, making the Tyranids’ piecemeal counter-attacks easy to drive off. Cal gar had lost half of his

remaining ships and several Imperi al ships had to bescuttled as they were overrun by Tyranid boarding p arties.

The Imperial f leets headed toward Macragge, but anotherhive fleet, composed of hundreds of large bio-ships alongwith their smaller companions, emerged from the warpbehind them.

    THE FATE OF THE FIRST

The survivors of the First Company were stil l f ightingunderground amongst the coolant stores and capacitors ofthe northern citadels defense lasers, but contact was lost. The remaining First Company detachments at the southernfortress were wiped out attempting t o counter-attackagainst a vit al bastion captured by the Tyranids, but smallpockets of Ultramar resistance held out in bunkers.

Calgar sent the Third and Seventh Companies aheadto Macragge in their strike cruisers while the rest of theUltramar fleet l imps slowly after them.

Lord Admiral Rath declared that t oo many of his shipswould be caught before they reached Macragge andturned away towards Circe. The greater part of the Tyranidfleet followed Battlefl eet Bakka, while the remaindereddogged the Ultramar fl eet with such numbers that t o turn

    back would be suicidal.

    THE BATTLE OF CIRCE

Battlefleet Bakka achieved a defensive position over Circe. The Tyranid fleet swept toward and were gunned down intheir hundreds. Finally, when only a fraction of t he Imperialships remained operational, Lord Admiral Rath gave theorder for his remaining ships to scatter, and overloadedhis warp engi nes, dragging all of the nearest Tyranid shipsinto the warp wit h him. Those further away were smashedin the swirling storm of dust, rocks and other detritusswept into the ship’s wake. Great f lares of incandescent

gas gouted up from Circe to incinerate the handful ofsurviving ships that remained in a holocaust of f lame. Onlya dozen other ships of the proud Tempestus fleet survivedthe battle of Circe. These limped away towards Macragge, though the battle for the Ultramarines’ homeworld wouldbe long over by the time they arrived.

As the Dominus Astra  dragged the heartof the hive fleet t o oblivion the bi o-shipspursuing Calgar started to split up, thesmaller vessels rushing after the Ultr amarships while their l arger companions turnedback and left the Macragge system.

    RECLAIMING THE FORTRESSES

The Seventh Company landed in the southunopposed, and linked up with survivorsabove ground. They pushed on to clearthe underground passages of Tyranids. Thesurviving Tyranids are uncoordinated, andwhile the seventh took casualties, resistancewas not too great.

The Third Company, however, came underattack as soon as they landed in the north. The landing zone was al most overrun byhundreds of Nids before Thunderhawkgunships arrived to support the company’s

Devastator squads. The Third pushed into the northern

fortress, f lushing out lone organisms withflamers, and suffering attack after attack. Two full sq uads were wiped out in a singleflank attack. Only one of the company’sdreadnought was able to block the Nids’rampage, having its arm ri pped off beforedestroying the Tyranids with its assaultcannon. The Third Company was assailedfrom all sides in a great chamber below Silo8. Three marines were kil led by a Hive Tyrant

before Ironclaw and Fabian got involved. The dreadnought Ironclaw and Captain

Fabian won laurels f or the first accreditedkill of a Hive Tyrant in close combat.

At the end of the fight belowSilo 8, barely a quarter of the 3rdcompany remained alive, and allthree dreadnoughts were damaged.

The 3rd Co. f inally fought their way tothe Penitorium where the First Company

had made their last stand. Tyranid bodieswere piled six deep around the doors andwithin the room a circle of Terminatorslay where they had fought back to back. The First Company had b een wiped out toa man. A hundred heroes had been l ostforever, and it would take centuries torebuild the Chapter.

    HIVE FLEET BEHEMOTH’S FINAL ATTACK

In space the survivors of the Ultramar fleeteasily destroyed the last wave of bio-ships. The Tyranids drove straight forwardagainst the fleet and Macragge’s defenses, and each successive wave was destroyedbefore it came anywhere near the planet.Hive Fleet Behemoth had been defeated.

    AFTERMATH

With the advent of the first, failedhivefleet i nvasion of Ultramar. Manystrange vessels and organisms are stil lreported especially in the Talassar system.
