HERNIS – a thriving business with thriving co-workers
HERNIS is experiencing international success and
the work force is growing steadily in our offices in
Arendal, Singapore and Houston. We are proud of
the level of competence and enthusiasm that has
made HERNIS the world leader within our niche -
state-of-the-art television surveillance systems for
extreme environments off- and onshore. Our
systems provide security & safety for people and
equipment.
During this past year we have increased our
organisation by 14 people, some of whom you can
meet in this newsletter. For the head office in
Arendal we are currently looking for even more co-
workers both within R&D, Engineering, Service
and Administration.
On January 24th HERNIS looks forward to
meeting students at a local Career Planning Event,
to arouse interest for our unique products and to
promote our good work environment. Our new HR
Manager Ann-Kari Heier urges Engineer graduates
from the local university to apply for work at
HERNIS. “We look forward to interesting
challenges ahead and welcome both recent graduates
and experienced people to apply for work at
HERNIS to contribute to our continued success”.
Software Engineer Carl Are Dreier Hopen
(portrayed on the cover), has worked for HERNIS
for nearly 8 years, ever since he graduated from the
college of higher education in Grimstad. “To deliver
the best products in the market we need to keep a
high technical level and high pace. The pride of
developing HERNIS’ state-of-the-art quality
products and career opportunities internally and
internationally is what’s keeping me here. Another
incentive is of course the work environment. In
HERNIS we are competing – not to promote
ourselves, - but to reach common goals through
excellent fellowship. Even though the company has
grown to above 100 employees, everyone’s opinion
still counts” Mr. Hopen says.

ISO 14001:2004 aims to prevent environmental
misconduct by HERNIS and our suppliers and
customers, as well as urge environmental awareness
amongst our staff throughout the HERNIS
organisation. To fulfil our environmental
responsibility useful environmental measures are
integrated in the day-to-day operation. HERNIS is
proud to be an active contributor to the protection
of the environment.
It is with great pleasure HERNISwelcomes Mrs. Ann Kari Heier totake on the newly establishedposition as Human ResourcesManager at HERNIS.

Kongsberg.
Ann-Kari adds expertise to HERNIS as the
company looks forward to dealing with challenges
and exploiting possibilities ahead. She holds a
Master of Science degree within control
engineering, and has 15 years of experience within

sporting activities and music together with her
family and friends.

“China will soon be the number one shipbuilding
nation in the world with respect to numbers of
ships and thus represents an enormous potential for
HERNIS. As Chinese yards now enter into
construction of more complex ships of various sizes,
the demand for state-of-the-art CCTV systems is
expected to grow in China. Through winning this
contract HERNIS has proven competitive and a
preferred partner” says Bjørn Fossestøl, Marketing
Director of HERNIS Scan Systems.

In 2006 HERNIS entered into acooperation with National OilwellVarco (NOV) to integrate HERNISCCTV operation into the NOVstandard Amphion Control TouchPC.The prototype was presented atOTC 07 at the AC-Ideal Demo Rig.Positive results immediately led tomore orders!
Since 2006 HERNIS has been enjoying a mutually
beneficial technological cooperation with National
Oilwell Varco. The initial project was to develop
software to operate the HERNIS 8x8 CCTV system
via NOV’s own Amphion Control Touch PC used
for Drilling Control. Based on successful tests at the
demonstration rig AC-Ideal at OTC in Houston
May 2007, the cooperation was expanded and
another 5-6 systems have now been ordered.
The concept has been expanded to incorporate
larger CCTV systems like HERNIS 500, this
system has been selected for the drilling units
Lonestar, Goldstar, Norbe VI and Delba III, where
the CCTV system is distributed in 4 cabinets
networked by a gigabit Ethernet. This allow for easy
integration of the Amphion Touch PC’s, as well as a
high quality digital recording of all the cameras.
Carl Are Hopen, R&D Software Engineer at
HERNIS and responsible for the software
integration is very pleased with the cooperation and
the resulting product. “The customised operation of
the HERNIS CCTV system via NOV’s own Touch
Screen Drilling Control System is the optimal
solution for the customers in terms of easy
installation and end-user requirements. I was
satisfied to learn that the people who tested the new
Touch Screen operation in fact drew attention to
the user friendly operation. The new interface is
loosely based on Sea Touch and includes features
like Quad control and in-video pan & tilt. During
the process I have gained useful experience with
Windows XP Embedded and exiting ideas for
further product development are being discussed in
the organisation as we speak”.

11In November HERNIS once again
participated at Marintec China inShanghai. The exhibition is seen asone of the most importantinternational maritime trade fairs inthe South East Asia region.Considering the rapid developmentin the Chinese maritime industry thefair is an obvious business arena forHERNIS.
Representing HERNIS were Managing Director of
HERNIS Scan Systems Asia Pte Ltd, Mr. Svein
Gundersen and Area Sales Manager Mr. Vincent
Yap as well as our agent in China Dan Marine Far
East Ltd, represented by Mr. Lawrence Wang, Eric
Chao and their good colleagues. In additional Jan
Kristensen, overall Sales Manager was also visiting
the exhibition from Norway to add a complete
international presence to the show.
Mr. Gundersen was satisfied with our own
performance and the overall organization of the
show. “The Marintec China 2007 was an improved
exhibition compared to 2 years ago and many
interesting customers attended during the 4-day
period in November. Despite the modest quantity
of equipment we chose to exhibit interest was great
and clearly underlines the importance of the future
China marked. With many ongoing and upcoming
projects in the region our agent and our Area Sales
Manager were having their hands full highlighting
the advantages of HERNIS CCTV equipment over
the competition” he says.
The Chinese economy is growing rapidly and the
marine transportation volume is increasing with an
enormous speed. China's demand for new shipping
in 2006-2010 is forecast to be 31 million DWT, or
approximately 6.2 million DWT on average per
year. “With world leading CCTV equipment tailor
made for marine environments this obviously is an
important business arena for HERNIS” Mr.
Gundersen sums up.
Over 1,100 exhibiting companies attended
Marintec China this year, with 35,309 visitors being
registered. This was up 17% on the previous event
in 2005.
Marintec China – The gateway to an excelling
maritime industry
“Despite a modest selection ofequipment on display interest
was great”, says Mr. SveinGundersen pleased. To the right,Mr. Jan Kristensen, overall Sales
Manager at HERNIS and Mr.Tim Kutscher of Marine &
Offshore Equipment GmbH –HERNIS’ agent in Germany.
