‘Tis the season....

To cozy up with a good book!

www.hernandocountylibrary.us 2

Winter is a time for reflection and connection. We take pause to reflect on the year

past and find hope in what the New Year might bring. We slow down to make time to

connect with family and friends. As I’ve been reflecting on the past year, I’m proud of

all that we offered to our community through the new services, programs, and

technologies we implemented. I’m also taking time to focus on how we can improve

our services and bring even more to our community during the New Year. As your

Public Library System, we exist to serve you by providing information, technology,

educational and recreational resources, programs, and classes, and to provide spaces

for community engagement, forums for civic engagement, and opportunities for

artistic and cultural expression and experiences. While winter is a season for

connection with family and friends, the role of your Public Libraries is to provide and

make connections for community members all year long.

During 2017, Hernando County Public Libraries received more than 300,000 visits to

our branches. We answered over 250,000 research and information requests, offered

1,455 programs with attendance exceeding 20,000, and we circulated over 620,000

items. 217 computer lab classes were offered, 88 Book-A-Librarian appointments

were completed, and technology instruction was provided to over 19,000 community

members. 75,649 public computer sessions were logged and 117,453 wireless

sessions were provided. In 2017, we focused on expanding cultural & artistic

offerings. We launched a Ukulele lending program and classes with funding from the

Brooksville Rotary and a new partnership with the Tampa Bay Ukulele Society; offered

a new Artist Works for Libraries service (online, self-paced art and music instruction);

celebrated International Jazz Day with a free concert (Sponsored by the Friends of the

Library of Hernando County); and installed new rotating community art exhibits and

quilt displays at the Spring Hill branch.

During 2018, we want to hear for you! How can we improve? What services or

resources do you wish we offered? Keep your eyes out for a survey, and you can

always use our comment cards located at all branches to make suggestions anytime.

Library News and Notes

Elin is always willing to pitch in anywhere and always takes a team-oriented approach to everything she does. She communicates information to all library staff and shares any knowledge that she comes across. She is also the first to give recognition and praise to others. Her enthusiasm for Library Services is so genuine and passionate that she reaches many people on a regular basis through her teaching, outreach efforts, Ask- A-Librarian participation, and by telling our patrons about programs and services that they might enjoy.

In her role as Patron Support Technician, Elin fills in at all branches that are short-staffed, attends community outreach events, assists the Youth Services Librarian with story times and other youth programs and is very involved in all of our Summer Youth programs. For these reasons (and many others) she was awarded the Employee of the Quarter Award for the months of June-August 2017.

Congratulations Elin! You truly deserve this recognition. You exemplify teamwork and a positive attitude in all situations and you are an asset to our team at HCPLS.

Staff Spotlight: Elin Tate

Volunteer Spotlight: Kathy Nicastro

Kathy has lived in Hernando County for eleven years and has volunteered at the libraries for nine. Before coming to Hernando County her career was as an archivist at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. She assisted researchers by locating and making available documents from the Archives holdings. Currently, Kathy volunteers at all four library branches. She has observed that each library is unique and has different needs. At one library she shelves books, at another she shelf-reads, and at the other two branches she makes phone calls to patrons and shelves as well. When she’s not volunteering, she loves to read, travel, and do historical research. We are truly fortunate to have someone as experienced and dedicated as Kathy as a volunteer. Thanks, Kathy, for all you do for our libraries!

Good songs. You’ll like ‘em.

After more than a decade of world-wide touring and three album releases, Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson--otherwise known as the folk duo Hungrytown--have earned a reputation for the quality and authenticity of their songwriting: “It’s great to hear an act eschew sentimentality in favor of honesty and to prove that you don’t have to go raiding the memory of others to find the stuff that really good songs are made of,” writes Jedd Beaudoin of Popmatters.

Lyricist Rebecca Hall is credited with compositions “that sound as timeless as any traditional songs” (Northern Sky, UK) while producer/multi-instrumentalist/husband Ken Anderson is lauded for his “remarkable affinity for instrumental embellishment” (No Depression) and for crafting Hungrytown’s “gorgeous vocal harmonies” (Folk and Roots, UK).

Hungrytown's introduction to folk music came when a close friend--who died young due to a tragic misdiagnosis--entrusted to them her collection of 1960s folk albums and her guitar (which has since been featured on all of their albums). Inspired by the grit and true-to-life experiences she heard in these traditional ballads, Hall was inspired to write the lyrics that later became her first songs, aided by Anderson’s flair for musical arrangement. Soon afterwards, Hall released two solo albums, Sings! (1999) and Sunday Afternoon (2002), both produced by Anderson. In the winter of 2003, the duo quit their boring desk jobs, moved to the green hills of Vermont, and decided to pursue a full-time career as touring musicians.

They released their first CD, Hungrytown, in 2008; Any Forgotten Thing in 2011; and Further West in 2015. The couple continue to spend more than half of each year on the road, especially roads in North America, Europe and New Zealand. February is Black History Month In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson began officially commemorating African-American history during an annual week of remembrance. Woodson promoted the observance of “Negro History Week” during the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Woodson was one of the first academically trained African-American historians in the United States. Through his efforts to celebrate and study the nation's African-American heritage, February is now officially designated as Black History Month.
