The quality of the vehicles was very good.

The value of a Registration Day is that our

experienced Club Registrars thoroughly

check the whole car and notice details.

A few minor things were picked up but

nothing extraordinary.

good standard with friendly conversations

over two tables.

N ational Motoring Heritage Day

was certainly a highlight in our events

calendar.

Sixteen cars altogether arrived, on a

beautiful autumn morning, to the

Candelo Park for morning tea at 10am,

being a combined effort between the Bega

Heritage Motor Club (BHMC) and the

Sapphire Coast Historic Vehicle Club

(SCHVC).

The sounds of happy chatter and laughter

echoed through the little valley.

T his month the run took an educational

turn with a visit to On The Perch at Tathra,

a wonderful collection of walk through

aviaries presenting birds from around the

world in very natural surroundings,

followed by a great lunch at Kerri and Neil

Wood’s lovely home overlooking Tathra.

Only four cars met at the usual start point

with others joining at On The Perch while

some skipped the bird park and went

straight to Kerri and Neil’s.

After coffee the group took a leisurely stroll

through the aviaries and enjoyed an

interesting talk from one of the trainee

keepers about Bower Birds.

Who knew that Bower Birds can live for

thirty years in the wild and even longer in

captivity?

22

It was only a short drive to the Wood’s

residence.

Kerri and Neil provided a classic

Aussie sausage sizzle with salads.

Kerri cooked a range of cakes and

pastries that had to be seen to be

believed. Kerri assured us they were all

non-fattening!

Lunch flowed into a long lazy

afternoon of friendship and discussion

and it was great to see so many

members enjoying themselves.

Much admired was the garden; a

testament to the hard work by Kerri

and Neil to create such an oasis of

colour that is home to many birds

including the Kookaburra that has

trained people to feed it.

The day was enjoyed by all.

A very big thank you to Kerri and Neil

Wood for organising the day and

opening their home to the Club.

Club Meeting Venue

Our Club members have been trialling a

change in venue for our monthly meetings.

The Club Bega venue has been well

received with the purpose built function

room great for acoustics.

As an added bonus, many members

dropping in for an impromptu meal before

the meeting have enjoyed the fellowship of

other members with the same idea!

Tourer

Russell and Alison Napper have

two special Chevs in their stable.

Napper’s Produce, the wonderful

tray back ute, at 92, is the oldest

registered vehicle in our Club.

Their 1929 AC International Tourer

has attended many rallies over the

last thirty years. This elegant Chev

is a local vehicle. It was bought

new from Balmains of Bega in

1929. Initially it went to the Pearce

brothers’ farm in Brogo, where, at

one point a bodybuilder converted

the Tourer to a Ute (!), even

installing a tabletop on the back

when it began to rust.

The Nappers purchased it forty

years ago and spent nine years

restoring it to its original condition.

25

1937 Chevrolet Standard Sedan

This striking 30s Chevrolet with its

eye-catching radiator grille is owned by

Ray and Pauline Ubrihien.

The interior feels roomy and the clear

vision dials are a feature in a well thought

out instrument panel.

The clever top-hinged boot is flush with

the sweeping lines of the rear.

Ray has another Chev to restore … can’t wait!

1954 Chevrolet 104B Sedan

In 1996, just over 22 years ago, Bob and Sharyn Whiting

purchased the Howell family car. Rex and Aileen Howell drove

the Chevrolet from Bairnsdale in Victoria to Bega to deliver it.

Early on, with help from fellow Club member Russell Napper,

Bob restored his Chev to its former glory in time for a wedding.

Bob and Sharyn have both enjoyed their Chevrolet and

maintained it in showroom condition every since!

1962 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller Deluxe

Estate

by John Rigby

Originally sold to Mr William T. Jackson

with a London delivery, rego 567 DGF, on

1st March 1962 for £491, about AU$614.

In 1962 Australian couple William and

Carol Jackson drove their new Morris

Traveller from London U.K. to Colombo

Sri Lanka, the journey taking from the

1st March to the 31st December 1962.

Covering 30,000 miles in nine months and

using 335 gallons of petrol, costing eighty

two pounds fifteen shillings (Aust Pounds)

and averaging 37.4 miles per gallon, they

visited thirty-three countries ensuring a

stop in Paris, where they were married.

Finally arriving in Sri Lanka the Traveller

was handed over to the Automotive

Association of Ceylon who arranged

loading the Traveller aboard the Ship

“CHAKDINA” bound for Port Adelaide,

South Australia.

The Jacksons continued to drive their

Morris in South Australia until around

1977 when the Traveller was sold to

Mr Michael B. Brownell of Watervale.

Mr Brownell used the car daily until about

1990 when a mechanical problem caused

him to place the Morris in his garden shed

on blocks where it laid at rest until 2000.

When Michael Brownell passed away the

vehicle was sold to a dealer in

South Australia though first it had to be

removed from the shed.

This involved cutting down several

large gum trees that had grown in

front of the shed door

over the ten years.

My Morris TravellerMy Morris TravellerMy Morris Traveller 196219621962

Page 28: HERITAGE TIMES - shannons.com.au · Rhonda Leggett fined Graham Peterson, for needing two parking spaces for his Torana. Bob Whiting fined Gary Smith for some entertaining stories

28

The Traveller passed into the hands of

Mr John Fisk of Parafield Gardens who

purchased the Morris on 25th February

2000 after the Traveller had been given a

thorough cleaning and mechanical service

by the dealer and was re-registered with its

original SA plates; 336 250. John used the

vehicle as his everyday driver until placing

it on historic car registration around 2014.

On 29th March 2019 I purchased the

Morris when it was offered for sale,

trailering the little Traveller back home to

New South Wales where it now resides.

The Morris is original and shall remain so,

some preservation is planned for timber

work and minor rust repair to one front

guard, the Morris is surprisingly rust free

other than the two small spots on the

guard’s rear.

I am lucky to be the custodian of such an

historic vehicle that has now covered over

185,000 genuine miles on its original

engine and crossed the world with its

adventurous Australian owners.

The Traveller and the Jackson’s adventures

are well documented in the couples

“A Travellers Journal”; a personal 185 page

document that covers the tale from the cars

purchase to its delivery in South Australia;

the journal, complete with original Morris

delivery papers and shipping documents

as well as other Traveller information is

now a part of the Morris Traveller and

all in one place for the first time.

It is indeed one of life’s rare privileges to now

be the Travellers current custodian.

John Rigby

John is currently working on the woodwork, steering and brakes plus a general tidy up.

A well-deserved dose of TLC for your new Morris. Thank you, John & Veronica Rigby!
