THE BUYER Estimated PriceEstimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance).

Reserve PriceThe reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold.

Buyer’s PremiumBuyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.

BEFORE THE AUCTIONViewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale.

Condition ReportsCondition reports are available upon request. They are statements of opinion and should not be relied on as statements of definitive fact. Descriptions of property are not warranties and that lot is sold “as is”. All goods are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description. Illustrations in catalogues are for identification only. It is strongly recommended that prospective buyers inspect and seek any independent expert advice to satisfy you as to authorship, attribution, authenticity, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance or condition of lot.

RegistrationIf you are planning to participate in the auction, you will need to register with us at the registration desk, to complete a bidder registration form and to receive a bidding number to identify you if you are a successful bidder. Registration can be made during the viewing period or 30 minutes prior to the sell.

THE AUCTIONBiddingAll artworks are auctioned in consecutive numerical order. Bidding is done in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in incremental price raise. The auctioneer will accept bids from those present in the saleroom or absentee bidders participating by telephone or by written bid left with HERITAGE in advance. The lot being offered is usually illustrated on a screen.

Absentee/ Written BidsIf you cannot attend the auction in person, you may bid in other ways. The most common is written bids. Written bids are written instruction given to HERITAGE to bid for you on one or more lots up to a maximum amount you specify for each lot. There is no charge for this service. If two or more parties leave identical bids, the first bid received by HERITAGE will take preference. Written bid forms are available 7 days before the sale and returned to HERITAGE within 24 hours before the sale or by fax to (021) 351 0707.

Telephone BidsIf you cannot attend the auction, HERITAGE will execute on behalf of your bid by telephone. Please make arrangements for this service at least 1 (one) day before the sale. It is advisable for you to leave your maximum bid, in case you are unable to reach us by phone.

Successful BidsSuccessful bidder will be indicated by the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer after reaching or exceeding the reserve price. HERITAGE will record the bidder number of the buyer. Under the auctioneer’s discretion bidding may be reopened.

Unsold lotsWhen a lot fails to sell, the auctioneer will not announce a bidder’s number. Lots unsold will be returned to the consignor usually after a week in case there are any post sale offers.

AFTER THE AUCTION Payment Payment of purchases should be made within 7 (seven) calendar days. Please include your paddle number, name, lot number, and total payment in your bank instruction. If buyers do not make any payment or notice to HERITAGE during the scheduled time, they will be considered as withdrawing.

Collection of GoodsGoods can be collected only when payment has cleared and been received by HERITAGE. Due to space constraints, HERITAGE requires that purchases and unsold property be collected within 7 (seven) days. If the goods remain after 7 (seven) days HERITAGE reserves the right to cause the artworks to be stored at the expense of the purchaser.

Storage and InsuranceHERITAGE provides insurance cover for sold items for a maximum of 7 (seven) days after the date of the sale. If the goods have not been removed by the deadline, the goods will be deposited at warehouse and all storage transportation and other associated costs as well as risk shall be at the purchaser’s responsibility.

THE SELLERAuction estimates If you are considering selling your property at the auction, HERITAGE will provide a free initial estimate of its auction value. You can send a clear photograph of each item with complete data includes the dimension, artist’s signature, medium, physical condition and any other relevant information.

The conditions of business set up below are information guidance for prospective buyer and seller with any enquiries relating to buying or selling at the auction. We encourage you to read them wisely and thoroughly.

After Sale NotificationYou will receive an after sale advice listing the final bid price, or in the event that the property failed to sell, notification that it was bought-in to be returned to you. Payment for your sold property takes approximately 4 (four) weeks, provided payment has been received by us from the buyer.

CONDITIONS OF SALEThese conditions of sale together with any terms and conditions set out a consignment form constitute the entire agreement with the Buyer on respect to any lots listed in the catalogue. Amendment to the catalogue descriptions may be made verbally during the course of auction or by appropriate posted notices. By bidding at the auction, you shall be bound by the conditions set out below.

Terms used in these conditions * “The Buyer” means the person with the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer. * “The Lot” means any items deposited with us for sale at auction and, in particular, the item (s) described against any lot number in the catalogue. * “The Hammer Price” means the amount of the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer in relation to a lot. * “The Reserve” means the amount below which we agree with the seller that the lot cannot be sold. * “The Buyer’s Premium” means the charge payable by the buyer as a percentage of the hammer price, at the rate set out in the auction room at the time of the relevant sale. * “Forgery” means a Lot constituting an imitation originally conceived and executed as a whole with a fraudulent intention to deceive as to authorship, origin, age, period, culture or source where the correct description as to such matters is not reflected by the description in the catalogue.

Withdrawal of PropertyHERITAGE reserve the right to withdraw from the sale the property or to have the property listed at any auction without any prior notice to the vendor.

Control of AuctionHERITAGE will have absolute discretion to determine the successful bidder should a dispute arise between the bidders and this includes the authority to reject any bid, to cancel the sale or to re-offer the property in dispute.

Ownership of PropertyThe fall of the auctioneer’s hammer indicates the property sold to the buyer who is responsible for the property and shall be liable to pay the full purchase price within 7 (seven) days. If extended payment terms have not been granted, penalty interest will be charged on the unpaid balance until paid.

Remedies of HERITAGEIf the buyer is in breach of any of the conditions of sale then HERITAGE may choose to take the following action:

(1) Cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages any payment made by the buyer. (2) Re-sell the property without any minimum price at the next auction of HERITAGE or privately on 5(five) days notice to the buyer. (3) Take any other action HERITAGE may consider necessary.

In the event a defaulting buyer has made a part payment, HERITAGE reserves the right to apply such payment to any such lots at its sole discretion.

ForgeryIn the event of proven forgery, HERITAGE will refund to the buyer the purchase price of the lot. This refund will only occur on the following terms:

(i) The buyer must provide evidence from an independent expert who proves that the lot is a forgery. HERITAGE reserves the right to request further expert evidence if, in its sole discretion, it is not satisfied with the finding of either expert.(ii) The buyer must provide written notification to HERITAGE within 1 (one) year of the auction date of the forgery allegations.

No refund will occur if there is any conflict of opinion among accepted experts in the field or if it can be demonstrated that the lot is a forgery only by means of scientific process that could damage or otherwise jeopardize the condition of the lot and which scientific techniques were not commonly employed until after the publication of the catalogue.

This guarantee is for the benefit of the buyer only and cannot be assigned. Such buyer must have remained the owner of the property without disposing of any interest in it to any third party up until the time the alleged forgery was discovered.

Handling and Packaging Handling and packing of all purchase lots shall be at the risk of the buyer who shall pay an administration charge if HERITAGE is responsible for such services. HERITAGE shall use our best efforts to take care when handling the packing but remind the buyer that from 7 (seven) days time after the sale, the goods are entirely at the buyer’s risk. You can instruct your own shipper for the shipping. However, we can also arrange for such service but are not responsible for any costs incurred during the shipping.

Born in Semarang, 1899. He once lived in Surabaya and made many paintings about the city. He traveled to many countries in Asia, Europe, and Africa, like Japan, Rome and Arab. He decided to spend the rest of his time in Holland until he died in Den Bosch, the Netherlands, in 1968.

Dullah was born in Solo, 1919. He studied painting under Affandi and Sudjojono but has his own distinctive style of naturalism. He was well known for his landscape and portraits paintings. He was one of the founders of HBS – Surakarta Cultural Community (1950). In 1956, he edited book of former Presiden Soekarno’s Private Collection of Indonesian Art (volume I & II). Since the early days of the independence, Dullah was very close to Soekarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia and was appointed by Soekarno to care for the President’s private art collection and as curator of the state painting collections. At age 70, Dullah built his museum, now a cultural landmark, as his dedication to a love of the arts over a creative lifetime. He has had numerous art exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas and in 1988 his work was included in the Art of Bali exhibition held at the East West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Now, his works been kept in Dullah Museum in Solo. He died in 1996.

Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, 1916. He was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali.

Mahyuddin S. the naturalist painter was born in 1924 in Bukittinggi, Sumatra. Since childhood, he was already very fond of painting and developed his skill and techniques under guidance of noted painters in his born city. In 1948, he held his joint exhibition in Bukittinggi with painters from all over Sumatra. In 1950, he moved to Jakarta for work and continued his study at the Perguruan Tinggi Djurnalistik Institute of Journalism until 1955. In 1956, he held a joint exhibition in at Bapenas Building, Jakarta. He worked in Unilever Jakarta from 1957 until 1961 in which he decided to devote his full attention in painting. He continued to hold several painting exhibitions, among the successful one was in 1968 at Hotel Indonesia. In 1969 – 1971, he held exhibition in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. In 1972, he held his exhibition in Bremen, West Germany, Amsterdam Holland, and Vienna, Austria. In 1973, he travelled again to Europe and performed the exhibitions in West Berlin and Frankfurt. In 1974, he held his last exhibition in Singapore again. Mahyuddin is a naturalist painter who conveys quietness, peacefulness and grandeur in his paintings. His works have been in the collection of many important art collections in Indonesia and abroad.

Born in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, 1923. He graduated form the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1951 and continued his study of art and handicrafts in Amsterdam finished in 1953. He was among the first who benefited from a Dutch formal education during the colonial period and was able to acquire a strong intellectual basis for producing modern art. From a very young age, he was able to nurture his artistic bent through special instruction from Dutch art teachers. He went on to pursue art at the Kunstnijverheid School in Amsterdam, and the Ecole Nationale Suprieure des Beaux Arts in Paris as well as the Deutsche Akademie der Kuenste in Berlin. Due to his extensive art studies, Mochtar Apin became proficient in a variety of techniques. With such knowledge, he was well equipped to debate on the role of art in Indonesia. In the Indonesian art world, Mochtar Apin’s diverse range of interests and unique versatility in style has left behind an artistic legacy that has held the interest of art connoisseurs to this day.

Richard Winkler was born in Norrkoping, Sweden, 1969. He studied arts at the Nyckelviken School of art which later continued his study at the Beckmans School of Design. He was interested in human body His works have been exhibited in Asia as well as European countries.

As one of the foreign artists who visualized Bali, Richard Winkler continues the romantic tradition of painting on the island. Winkler was very interested in the human body and anatomy which he put into canvases in exaggerated figures. In the period of 1994-1995, he traveled to several cities in Europe to deepen his visual arts. In 1997, he moved to Bali and creates paintings inspired by the place. Besides painting human figures, he also interested in painting plants of the tropical forest. Plants in most of his paintings are a direct representation or abstraction of fertility of the real tropical plants and a pattern that enrich and strengthen the views of his works. In the present lot, Winkler put the form of bathing figures appeared in the contrast with the natural vegetation in which the figures were placed. The use of bright color, motif, texture and light technique made a beautiful combination on the painting.

Born in Switzerland, 1908. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel and Academies of Art in Berlin and Dresden. In 1936 he settled in Bali for 20 years then moved to Thailand in 1961. His works have been the collection of former President Soekarno, the Museum Neka in Bali, the Agung Rai Fine Arts Gallery in Bali, and the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland.

Dede Eri Supria is a super-realist southeast Asian artist in Indonesia. He was born in Jakarta on January 29, 1956. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta, graduating in 1974. In 1976 he first emerged onto the Indonesian Art Scene when he exhibited his work at the first Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia exhibition at the Balai Budaya in Jakarta. Being an contemporary artist like myself, most of the subject matters that Dede explores in about the increasing trend of consumerism happening in Indonesia, emphasizing on the social commentary portion on Indonesian society in his art works. Themes in his artworks include the rich-poor divide in Indonesia, the lives of the urban dwellers in Indonesian cities, the poor and neglected and the changes in the Indonesian society in general, particularly in his own hometown, Jakarta.

The present lot shows a famous traditional sport from Spain. “The Matador” an individual traditional sport showing a bullfighter who performs the final passes by killing the bull. The matador’s traditional costume, which offers no protection, is known as the “suit of lights.” The gracefulness of a matador was reflected by the skill and daring style of killing the bull. This object has captured Dede’s attention in producing painting of bull fighting theme.

Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. He started painting in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides as a painter he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia as well as overseas. His works were mostly on animal such as chicken, cat, and tiger. He held his solo exhibitions at Taman Ismail Marzuki Arts Center, Jakarta (1987, 1992, and 1994), National Gallery, Jakarta (1999) and participated in group exhibitions at KIAS, USA (1990), The Best of Indonesia, Jakarta (1997), and Slovenia Gradec (1997).

Putu Sutawijaya was born in Angseri, Tabanan, Bali, 1971. He finished studies in painting in Faculty of Fine Arts at ISI Yogyakarta in 1998. Putu’s works have been nominated many awards such as one of the 10 best paintings of Philip Morris Art Award in 1999 and granted the Lempad Prize from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia in 2000. He has been performing Solo exhibitions in Bali, Yogyakarta, Jakarta Singapore, Hongkong, Malaysia and America. Various motions and human behavior are the theme he likes most in his paintings. His spontaneous and firm lines expressed his dynamic works using minimal color.

Putu’s figures are painted with rhythmic motion and minimal color, and are characterized by his strong lines and brush strokes. Putu invests in his figurative narrative certain anonymity. The figures are androgynous and, for the most part, faceless which is strikingly different from that of much of recent Indonesian art which personalizes the messages of art by giving faces to the characters. For Putu, the facelessness of his figures is not what someone looks like but rather “human expressions, conveyed through his work, that are meant to apply cross-culturally”. Androgynous human figures are represented in motion – dancing, flying, floating – or otherwise completely still in a pose of serene contemplation. His art is, above all, about the individual human condition in a struggle to free itself from the constraints of an overly complex world.

He was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter.

Basoeki Abdullah started painting since he was 5 years old in simple drawing, and at 10 he traveled to Surabaya and Bali where he started portrait painting. During 1933, he held his first exhibition in Bandung. He brought his painting to RMP. Sosrokartono, RA. Kartini’s brother, who was very impressed on Basoeki’s painting. Sosrokartono and Prince of Mangkunegoro VII became the person who greatly supported his painting career until Basoeki become a famous painter. During that time he continued his study at Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, the Netherlands.

Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of natural beauty and sensuous landscape, he is also noted for his portraits of beautiful women, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. His great fond of paintings women’s figure perhaps derived from his great interest in exploring the beauty of women that is attractive to paint in any way. The artist gain the public recognition after winning a painting competition held in conjunction with the Netherland’s Queen Juliana ascension to throne on 6 September 1948.

Internationally celebrated Painter and Sculptor, Teguh Ostenrik holds a Master Degree in Fine Arts Hochschule der Kuenste, West Berlin, Germany. He has had more than one hundred solo and group exhibitions in the USA, Europe (France, the Netherlands, Germany), Australia and throughout Asia. His art works and commissioned projects are collected by many private collectors, museums, international institutions and major corporations. To name a few are Willem de Kooning Studio – USA, St.Mary of the Angels Church – Singapore, Fukuoka Art Museum – Japan. Among many noteworthy recognitions, Ostenrik was awarded The Best Artist 2009 in Visual Arts Category by Tempo Magazine and the Top Ten Philip Morris Art Award in 1997. Most of Ostenrik’s works were created based on his respect to environment. He used lots of recycle material and mother earth colors. He believes that having himself raised in Indonesian culture, graduated from Hochschulle der Künste West Berlin, Germany and later resided in Europa for 16 years, has created a two sided insights in his works. The Indonesian and European culture has merged in him and subconsciously shaped his artistic statement. Recently, he initiated ARTificial Reef Park Project which was launched in Lombok, Indonesia, a project to restore the nature through art. Using biorocks technology, Ostenrik provides his underwater sculptures as media for the coral to grow and providing a better marine ecosystem. Ostenrik’s 24 years work of art has been documented in Transcending Time, a full coloured 250 pages book, wrote by Art Historian Barbara Asboth. He was a guest lecturer in the Beijing Central Academy of Art in 2006. For three consecutive years (2006-2008) Teguh is a jury member of China Asean Youth Art Creativity Contest in Nanning – China, a drawing competition with 3000 participants. In 2013, he represented Indonesia to commemorate 10th Anniversary of China-Asean Expo. In 2007, he was honoured to be the Artist in Residence in Penang, Malaysia for the ABN-AMRO and Wawasan Open University. Now Ostenrik resides in Jakarta, Indonesia.

SunaryoBorn in Banyumas, Central Java, 1943. Sunaryo studied at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) majoring Art Department in 1969 and continued to study marble carving for 7 months at Carrara, Italy in 1975. He is regarded as one of the abstract art pioneers in Bandung together with AD Pirous and Ahmad Sadali. Throughout his journey as an artist, Sunaryo has been exploring many subjects and materials for his art. He applied his art in various media from painting, sculpture, and installation. Sunaryo mixes figurative themes with abstract backgrounds using very refined color palette and graceful lines that show great technical mastery. He loves to use natural materials such as rattan, grass, bamboo, jute, canvas, nets and fibers in his multimedia. In processing his painting, he paints with his specific visual language. His works are dominated with lines and forms, mostly found in the use of white, brown, grey and black colors.

Sunaryo established himself with lyrical paintings of Indonesian themes such as Barong. In a large proportion he painted his great fond of Balinese culture. Barong is a dragon like dance usually seen in Balinese tradition during the festival or religious ceremony. Barong, a dragon like animal for Balinese people is believe to be the guidance of truth that can protect human from evil. It usually plays an important role in many Balinese dances especially in the spiritual ceremony.

Strasser was born in Vienna, Austria and studied art in Munich, Germany. He was one of the great painter/adventurers of the early 20th century, and one of the last Orientalist romantics. His energetic paintings and drawings captured and portrayed the lives of subjects from regions and cultures still considered “exotic” by European viewers of the era. Once described by an admirer as “a strange, restless painter, who was known for painting subjects that were dif-ficult or even dangerous to paint.

Early on he received a commission in Holland and from here first became aware of Indonesian art and culture. In 1920 Strasser traveled first to Siam (Thailand), then Java (Indonesia) and finally New Guinea. Along with another adventurer – whose intention was to shoot exotic birds – Strasser journeyed to the remote and forbidding interior of New Guinea. He had lived in Indonesia for a consider-able period of time. In Bali he met the painter Willem Dooijewaard with whom he worked and traveled. He painted a lot of Balinese lifestyles. He migrated to the USA in 1952 where he worked until his death in 1974. Strasser's works are represented in the collection amassed by President Sukarno.

Zhang Da Zhong is a Chinese painter. Born in Guangzhou in 1953, He showed such great technique and potential in painting that he was accepted as a Masters student at the highly esteemed Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts without having to do his BFA. A celebrated portrait artist, Zhang is renowned for his Red Guard series. Zhang’s earlier works from 2005 to 2006 portray a more militaristic atmosphere, some with weapons and more intense expressions and stronger colors. In recent years, he has portrayed the females in a more agricultural or natural environment, against backdrops of mountains and fields. This signals a move from a more militaristic and political setting, where the female could have been anyone, and the context of time could be completely unrelated to the Cultural Revolution era. Often, the only clue that defines the female as a Red Guard during the Cultural Revolution, is the uniform that she wears.

Zhang was a member of the Guangzhou Chinese Artist Association. He was actively participated in several exhibitions; as the 11th Asia Olympic – Chinese Sports Art Exhibition (1990), “A Prosperous China” Art Competition (1992), “Love for China” Art Exhibition (2000), The Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition (2001), “About Women” Female Portrait Exhibition in Hongkong (2003), “Spring Gala – Hongkong (2004). He received several awards as Outstanding award “How Steel is Made” (2000), Love for China Art Exhibition (2000), “Golden Hope” – Gold Award (1992), A Prosperous China” Art Competition (1992), “Girl From the Yao Tribe” –Out Standing Award (1991), “Girl from the Yao Tribe”-Bronze Award (1990). Abdul Djalil “Ad” Pirous

A.D. Pirous was born in Meulaboh, Aceh on 11 March 1932. He was the fifth of six children in a relatively well-to do family. He went to school in Meulaboh’s elite, Dutch-run elementary school while also receiving religious instruction on reciting the Koran and writing Arabic. In 1950, at the age of 18, Pirous left Aceh for the North Sumatran city of Medan to continue his studies at that city’s first-rate middle schools and high schools. He did well in school and art was what he did best. His middle-school art teacher urged him to consider art school. But it was the exhibition of modernist painters like Zaini, Handrio, Nashar, Widayat and Sudjojono who came from Jakarta and Yogyakarta that spurred his desire to pursue art education.

Pirous applied to the academies in Bandung and Yogyakarta, and went to Bandung because acceptance to the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) arrived first. As he developed his skills, Pirous did not stick to canvas only, but was also active as a teacher at his alma mater. His colleagues and ex-students think of him as a leader in the development of art, particularly of Islamic art in Indonesia. He is also considered an academic scientist in visual art. For almost 40 years (1964-2002), Pirous was a lecturer at visual art and design of the ITB. He was the founder of graphic design study program which has recently become the visual communication design study program.

AD Pirous, better known simply as Pak Pirous, was sent to New York in 1969 to study Visual Design at the Rochester University. There he visited as many museums and art venues as possible. Then, at the Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art) in New York, he was struck by the beauty of calligraphy in works from the Middle East. It took him back to his childhood in Meulaboh, Aceh, where Arabic calligraphy abounded. There and then, he knew he had found his identity, and his destiny. Returning to Indonesia, Pak Pirous threw himself into calligraphy, which made up much of his artistic output in addition to his figurative and abstract works. From then on Pirous’s art focus was on Arabic calligraphy and considered as a pioneer of Islamic painting in Indonesia.

DullahDullah’s painting stands out uniquely. His technique, brush stroke, observation, point of view, treatment of colour and mastery of his subjects make him stand out on his own. His mastery of the skills necessary to paint figure after realistic figure convinces of the reality of his scenes of individuals and groups of people in their setting. The skilled reproduction of skin tone and the mastery of the depiction of drapery, posture and gesture makes his paintings extremely convincing. Dullah’s choices of colour ranged between ocher to deep brown, with nuances of the play of yellow, green, turquoise, orange and maroon, become symbolic of his own character.

Dullah speaks through his paintings of the microcosms, the smallest elements of existence and the natural environment. His subject paintings ranging from the fresh faces of kampong children, portraits of a village woman, and the faces of the elderly men and women alike, jungle scenes and other landscapes and a variety of flowers. Throughout this wide range of subjects Dullah has always been certain to focus on the drama of life; a habit which has grown out of his own experiences and observations oh his environment. The present lot illustrates one of his serial paintings of flower object usually found in his surroundings.

Born in 1968. He was graduated from the Institute of Fine Art (ISI) Yogyakarta. He had lived for 2 years in Switzerland to continue his study and working. He has participated in several exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas. He had his solo exhibition in Semarang Gallery (2002). He received awards as the first winner of PMIAA, a finalist for Asean Art Award (2000) in Singapore and Indofood Art Award, Jakarta (2002). Now he lives in Bantul, Yogyakarta. Budi Ubrux loves to create contemporary realist artworks by exploring newspaper as a true-lies media. This phenomenon is put into canvas in the form of human being with skin from newspaper. Figures wrapped from top to toe in newspaper appeared suggesting a futuristic imagination of what could happen in our uncertain future. Bandaged, swathed and tied, the faceless sculptural figures are able to lead the imagination in wild proximity. Since then, art observers and collectors became interested in his works.

Affandi

Born in Cirebon, March 11, 1907. Affandi was considered as the Indonesian Artist par excellent. He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association (1946) and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947, Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he traveled to India for a grant from Indian Government, he held several one-man shows in several Indian Cities, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. He received an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture (1969), the Dag Hammerskjoeld Prize from Italy (1977) and an Indonesian Government the First Class Merit (1978). His works were exhibited in major exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and were also be acquired by major art collectors and institutions all over the world since the 1950s.

Affandi’s work exhibits a distinct rhythm full of emotional intensity by squeezing paint directly onto the canvas. The expressionist painter characteristically has an urgency to simultaneously grab the movement of the moment he wants to describe, along with capturing the textures of the object, a drive that often leads him to work much more passionately compared to the naturalists, the realists, or even the impressionists. He directly expressed his pure emotion in the form of strong wild lines dominated with black hues. Affandi’s strokes expressed his wild, vicious, and discontentment towards the fixed form of expression. He always paints in simultaneous movement and never tied with certain kind of forms. There are several plan themes that captured his interest in paintings; banyan tree, bamboo tree, sun flower, coconut palm and clove tree. Sometimes they combined with mountain landscape in the background with sun object that shimmering the tree. All of the objects were drawn as the results from Affandi’s experience in travelling to places he often visited. He observed the object and directly put into canvases using his wild fingers and rough strokes.

Srihadi SoedarsonoSrihadi is an artist with a deep cultural background. His integrity as a creative artist was formed through his formal education as well as through his life experiences. There are two important aspects in Srihadi’s paintings: first, the artistic value of color composition, and second, the philosophical value that reflects the meaning of life, cultural, and social value.

Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. The dancing figures in Srihadi’s painting were characterized with the use of other elements such as mask, fan, mirror, offerings or flowers. In the present lot the figure was posing in elegant style holding a fan in front of her chest. The way she looked directed us to a stage of waiting for something or perhaps just a symbolical meaning of her own self contemplation.

Adrien was very keen on becoming a painter himself, but his father insisted that he should complete his studies first. He graduated as a civil engineer (architect), but soon after devoted himself to painting. Le Mayeur’s works were executed with free-flowing and bold, strong strokes, in bright and gay colours. His works, be they sketches done in light colours or bright-coloured oil paints, showed that they were inspired by the brilliant and clear tropical sunlight. His subjects of paintings are Belgian Landscapes, Scenes of Asia and Africa, Balinese Genre, Figures and Nudes. He painted sunny landscapes in impressionist style, but most navies along the Belgian coast.

Some of Le Mayeur’s early works are impressionist paintings from his travels in Africa, India, the Mediterranean and the South Pacific. After painting Belgian landscapes for more than a decade, he served as an army painter during WW I and also took battlefield photographs. After the war, seeking solace in travel, he made trips to the south of France, Morocco, Tunisia, Madagascar, India, and Cambodia. Le Mayeur’s works from this period already display a tendency towards Orientalist and exotic subject matter. He then visited Tahiti and French Polynesia with the intention of being like Paul Gauguin; a European exploring and capturing the primitive beauty of Polynesian culture. After being generally disappointed by Polynesia -- which he found in decline and tainted by colonialism -- he moved on.
