Dear friends,

We are living in unprecedented and uncertain times. Our communities have faced monumental challenges and turning points in the past — but never in such combination or complexity.

As New Hampshire’s statewide community foundation, we are here for New Hampshire through whatever combination of challenges our communities face.

This is how — and why — community foundations are built.

While this report is a look back at 2019, it is impossible not to see everything through the lens of all that has happened since.

The Foundation awarded $41.3 million in grants and $6.4 million in scholarships in 2019. Every one of those grants and scholarships was made possible by the generosity of New Hampshire people who saw the value of pooling charitable dollars to serve the people and communities of New Hampshire forever.

After you peruse this simpler, online version of our annual report, we invite you to go to www.nhcf.org to read the stories of how that generosity makes a difference for New Hampshire.

Last year — and over the last five decades — those grants and scholarships helped prepare New Hampshire to meet the combination of crises we now face. Those scholarships helped train new nurses and EMTs and teachers and future medical researchers. Those grants helped family resource centers be better able to help New Hampshire’s most vulnerable families. They helped strengthen nonprofits that work for racial justice. They helped organizations that feed the hungry, that help people with disabilities, that protect victims of violence, that report the news with diligence and accuracy, that conserve natural spaces for all.

We are inspired by the generations of people who gave to make that work possible and by the way all of you — nonprofit professionals, community leaders, Foundation donors and advisors, volunteers, board and staff — have leaned into the set of challenges we now face. We ask you to continue to lean in, because the challenges our communities are facing will take more than a few months, or years, to solve. These challenges need every one of us to step forward — with humility, with courage and with great generosity — and work together for this place we all love.

Your community foundation is here for New Hampshire. No matter what.

Thank you for being part of it.

FROM THE CHAIR AND PRESIDENT

2019 HIGHLIGHTS

A COMPLETE COUNT The Foundation joined forces with other funders to help ensure an accurate 2020 Census count for New Hampshire.New Hampshire receives more than $3.7 billion annually in federal funding for 55 different programs informed by the census count, many of which affect the most vulnerable among us. The fair and equitable distribution of those funds depends on an accurate count of the population.

NEW HAMPSHIRE TOMORROWNew Hampshire Tomorrow is the Foundation’s 10-year, $100 million investment to help equalize the chances of success for young people regardless of race, family income or ZIP code. In 2019, $18.3 million was awarded in early childhood development; family and youth supports; substance use prevention, treatment and recovery; and education and career pathways. Foundation investment and leadership, in conjunction with the work of other partners, helped the state secure a $26.7 million federal preschool development grant. The state will receive $8.9 million per year for three years to fund regional early care and education initiatives, expand early-learning programs in rural areas, support family resource centers, support technical assistance and quality assessment and more. New Hampshire remains one of just five states with no state spending for pre-kindergarten programs.

INCREASING FOOD SECURITY IN THE NORTH COUNTRY The Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund made $3.8 million in grants in 2019, including a three-year grant for the New Hampshire Food Bank to create a new food security coordinator position in Coös County to increase access to affordable, fresh and locally produced foods for struggling families. The Food Bank is now working on opening a food distribution warehouse in the North Country.

GREATER GIVING STARTS HERERalph Baer was forced to leave school in Germany at 13 because he was Jewish. He escaped Germany with his family not long before the Kristallnacht rampage of Nazi riots that marked the beginning of the Holocaust. His family found refuge in the United States, and Ralph went on to invent the “brown box” controller that was the original prototype for much of modern video gaming. He raised his own family in a modest home in Manchester. Now, the Ralph H. and Dena W. Baer Memorial Scholarship will help other aspiring young technologists from Manchester Central High School achieve their dreams. The scholarship was one of 77 new philanthropic funds established at the Foundation in 2019. See pages 14 and 15 for a full list of new funds.

HELPING MOMS AND BABIES THRIVE A $3 million gift from an anonymous donor to help moms and babies affected by opioids and other substances has supported care and treatment, along with changes to systems, that have made a profound difference.Programs are providing services and treatment to help moms and babies thrive, while comprehensive plans for safe care across agencies are helping them get the community-based care they need. Also, birthing hospitals have implemented new protocols to care for newborns exposed to opioids before birth, improving outcomes for babies. The initial three-year gift was made in 2017; an additional generous gift from this donor is continuing to support this work.

SUPPORTING STUDENTS In 2019, the Foundation awarded $6.4 million in scholarships to help New Hampshire students get the education they need to thrive. A Foundation grant is supporting the Duet Program as it helps students enroll and supports them as they complete degrees at Southern New Hampshire University. Students go at their own pace, confer frequently with academic coaches and have access to 24-hour online coursework and tutoring. Because tuition is charged by time enrolled instead of per credit, Duet offers an affordable and time-efficient route to college completion.

INVESTMENT REPORT

For more detailed investment information, please visit www.nhcf.org.

For more than a half century, generous New Hampshire individuals, families and businesses have entrusted their philanthropic assets to the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. The Foundation has a track record of strong investment performance across changing economic times. We seek the best possible return over the long term while avoiding undue risk — maximizing dollars available to fund critical work in New Hampshire communities today, while prudently stewarding and growing those resources to maintain an enduring source of philanthropic capital.

The majority of funds at the Foundation are invested in a highly diversified global portfolio called the long-term pool. This diversification decreases risk and contributes to our solid performance record. Our investment committee works with Cambridge Associates to manage this fund.

Our impact investing pool offers donors the opportunity to pool charitable resources to make capital available to innovative business ventures and nonprofit organizations. Impact investments strengthen communities while generating a financial return.

The sustainable pool is for people who prefer their investments screened for environmental, social and governance criteria while producing solid returns now and in the future.

Donors to the Foundation ensure that New Hampshire has a flexible and reliable source of philanthropic resources — today and for the future. More than 1,200 individuals, families and organizations from all over the state gave more than $46 million in 2019. We are deeply grateful to each and every one of them for their commitment and generosity.
