From the Redeemer Council: While going through the MET (Mission Exploration Team)process, we referred to many congregational meetings and surveys. The M.E.T. and Council had a retreat in February. This topic of Fall Sunday Service time and Sunday school time was discussed at great length. The decision for the time was based on what you the congregation told us were important to you, which is Youth, Youth Ministry and Worship.

Based on the information we collected and heard from members during the MET process, we know that our youth, Sunday school, fellowship and both our 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship goers need Sunday to be relevant to them. We know we will not make everyone happy but we tried to find the best compromise. During the MET process, members also indicated that at this time we do not want to stop broadcasting over the radio and spreading the gospel over the radio. (The radio station recently told us that it would not work for them to continue to broadcast our Sunday Service if we went to the 10:00 a.m. service time.) The Mission Exploration Team and Council had a special meeting on Sunday, June 24th. We met to address this concern from the radio station and some members about having a 10:00 a.m. fall service time. We discussed the options for the Radio Broadcast , Sunday Service time and Sunday school/Adult Ed. Time.

So after prayer, much thoughtful discussion and following what you have told us through various communications in the last year, we have come up with the new Fall Sunday Schedule as a compromise. We are asking all of you to understand that we have looked at all concerns and have made the best choice. We are asking you all to give this new schedule a try. There is always some adjustment with change. The Council will review the time at the January Council Meeting.

September Service Notes

H.E.L.P. Corner at Redeemer

We are closer to OPENING, the rooms have been redecorated and are ready. Thanks to Bruce for painting the exterior trim on the South Entry. The color is bright and clean looking. The medical equipment will be arriving soon. Volunteers, please see Sheila for some forms to fill out. We can use more volunteers; a couple of hours on a Saturday morning is all we need. Please watch for opening and training dates. Last week we were mentioned in a news article and Washington County Insider will feature our Hartford location.

Thanksgiving Tree Dedication

Sunday, September 9th

After Sunday Service, please join us to dedicate the Reformation Tree that was planted last year. While looking at the past plans and drawings of the church, they suggested a row of trees on the south side of the driveway, from the upper lot to the lower lot. We have decided to continue up the hill from the dumpster corral with a row of trees. The trees can be dedicated for special events, anniversaries, birthdays, remembrance, etc. This year’s tree will be a memory tree planted in memory of Anne’s mother Koidula. The money was donated by the Ladies Group, friends of Anne’s, and Pastor Jon’s Mom. Please join us in Thanksgiving!

Service Team Notes

We have had another busy month. John and I met with the Daisy Girl Scout Leader. We are very happy to have them here at Redeemer. Please look for the letter from the leader on page 4 of this Herald. We will be providing a snack for their first meeting on Monday, Oct. 1st. Please let Sheila know if you are interested in baking cookies for the girls to welcome them to our building. We could use a few helping hands to get the rooms ready for them.

Thank you all for your generous donations and school supplies.

I am still looking for someone to take charge of the college outreach program. Please see Sheila if you feel called for this project.

Everyone is doing a great job of bringing bags in for the Mat Project with St. John’s. Not only are you helping the homeless, but the environment also.

Thank You, Members, for all the good you do .

Yours in Service, Sheila and John

The next Council meeting will be September 13. Respectfully Submitted by Jenny Nettesheim

Call Team (Committee) Next Steps

During the month of August, the call committee spent time fine-tuning questions for our pastoral candidates and discussed how we'll evaluate those candidates. We conducted our mock interview with a pastor assigned to us by Pastor Kristin, from the Synod office. We found it to be both very enjoyable and extremely helpful. We received some feedback regarding our interview process and the questions we asked, and we now feel that we are ready to receive names of prospective candidates and expect to receive those names the first week of September. We continue to ask for prayers from the congregation as we proceed. Call Committee: Don Horen, Rusty Mehlberg, Rod Lehl, Jenny Nettesheim, Alex Burton, Linda Krohn

Hello Redeemer Church Members,

My name is Ashlie Koerber and I am one of the co-leaders of Daisy Scout Troop #10483. Keyna Nuoffer and Kimberly Christenson are also leaders of our troop. We are delighted and thankful that Redeemer Lutheran Church is willing to let our little scouts meet at your facility. This is our troop’s 2nd year and we have 13 girls. We started out when the girls were in kindergarten and now they have moved into 1st grade. Last year’s focus was learning the Girl Scout Promise and Girl Scout Law while earning their Daisy Petals, which represented the Girl Scout Law. Our Daisy’s are learning how to be good friends to one another, learning how to make a difference in our community through Leadership activities, learn-ing to explore the outdoors, and of course, practice their entrepreneur skills by selling COOKIES!!! (shhh…don’t tell, I am hearing a rumor there will be a new cookie this year, Caramel Chocolate Chip!)

This year we will be focusing on a Girl Scout Journey. Our journey this year will be “It’s your Planet-Love It”. We will be focusing on nature and how to keep our Earth healthy. We may plant some trees or create a garden, and of course have some fun! We look forward to assisting with service projects and working with Redeemer Lutheran.

We also welcome guest speakers, so if you think you have something interesting to show the girls or talk to them about, please let us know.

Thank you again, Daisy Troop 10483

Last Sunday, continuing the saga of David in the Old Testament books of 1 and 2 Samuel, I told the story of David, Bathsheba, Uriah, and the prophet Nathan (2 Samuel 11, 12). In conclusion I asked the congregation why I would have told this story in past years on Ash Wednesday. Several members came very close with their answers after worship. You can find the connection when you read the introduction to Psalm 51, the psalm appointed for Ash Wednesday.

Help in the office: I have been doing my best to take care of the basics week by week. Many thanks to Sandi, Gary, Matt, Marge, Gabi, Sheila, Don, Jenny and everyone else who has pitched in. Huge thanks for Phil Smith, who has been coming in Fridays; Phil is working on the September Herald right now. Thanks also to the Personnel Team – Lynn, Joyce, Shannon, Gabi – as they search for the next office person.

There are tasks which members could volunteers to handle. One example, take a morning to be in the office to answer the phone, receive visitors, schmooze the mail carrier (very nice guy), check email, etc. Another big help would be to check the contact information we have for each member – address, phone number, email address. Recently, we had a church project stall because we did not have the correct, current email address for a member.

For now, please talk to me about helping out, and thank you.

Redeemer’s college kids: All members can be praying for our young women and men away at school. You could see they are a bunch of bright students, with interesting goals for their lives, when the Marcia Carrier Scholarships were awarded last December. Pray for all of them, for sure, plus how about picking out one of the students and contacting them to say you will be remembering them specifically in your daily prayers. The best person to talk to about our college kids is Sheila Bauer, besides, of course, their folks.

Parents: Please get your son or daughter’s latest email address, phone number, and mailing address to the church office. We need this to stay in touch, send The Herald, and send care packages during the academic year.

Summer Peach Raspberry Trifle

Prep Time: 20 minutes Total Time: 1 hour, 20 minutes Need the perfect, refreshing summer dessert? Check out this summer peach blueberry trifle recipe! Trifles are quick and easy to put together, plus they don't require any cooking skills; all you need to do is cut and layer fruit, cream, and cake! Easy peasy! Ingredients: ¼ C plus 2/3 C sugar ¼ C fresh lemon juice ¼ teaspoon almond extract 1 premade angel food cake 1 pound cream cheese (at room temperature) 2 C heavy cream (at room temperature) 3 C blueberries 3 peaches Instructions: Pull out the cream cheese and heavy cream and let them sit on the counter while you prepare the rest of the trifle. Heat the lemon juice, ¼ C sugar, and ¼ C of water in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves (about five minutes). Remove from heat and stir in the almond extract. Cut the angel food cake into 1” slices. Generously brush both sides of each slice of cake with the lemon/sugar liquid. Then cut each slice into 1” cubes. (Err on the side of thinner slices and smaller cubes here, you need a lot of cake to make the layers evenly.) If you have extra liquid don’t worry, you can use it up later. Beat the cream cheese and remaining 2/3 C sugar with a mixer on medium speed until it is smooth. Slowly add in the cream, continuing to beat on medium-high speed until the mixture is smooth and the consistency of whipped cream. Wash the fruit and cut into small pieces. If you’re using berries they don’t need to be cut, unless they are large. Arrange 1/3 of the cake cubes into the bottom of a 13 C trifle dish (or a large glass mixing bowl). Sprinkle with a layer of blueberries (about 1/3 of the blueberries) and then scoop about 1/3 of the cream mixture on top. Spread the cream out evenly all the way to the edges of the bowl with a spatula. Top with a layer of peaches (about 1/3), and then add another layer of cake cubes. If you had remaining lemon/sugar liquid, drizzle about half of the liquid over this layer of cake cubes. Repeat the layers: 1/3 of the blueberries, 1/3 of the cream, 1/3 of the peaches, and finish with the last remaining 1/3 of the cake cubes and the last half of the lemon/sugar liquid. You should have 1/3 of the cream and 1/3 of both fruits left at this point. Top the last layer of cake cubes with the remaining cream, spread it out evenly, and add all the remaining fruit on top of the last layer of cream. Cover with saran wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour so that the cream has time to thicken. When you're ready to eat it, dish out with a large serving spoon into bowls and enjoy!

Heavenly Recipes

Please Note: If you would like to submit a recipe, please send it to

the church by the 15th of the month to be published the following

September 23rd

In Mark's Gospel Jesus tells the disciples He will be killed and rise again. They do not understand. Jesus will die because the religious establish-ment cannot tolerate the radical grace of God that Jesus proclaims and lives. This grace that He proclaims and lives completely obliterates the world’s notions of greatness based on status, wealth, achievement, etc. Perhaps that is one reason we resist grace so much. It is much more appealing to be great on the world’s terms than on Jesus’ terms. Greatness on Jesus’ terms means being humble, lowly, and vulnerable as a child. Greatness on Jesus’ terms is risky; it can even get a person killed. But as Jesus teaches repeatedly, his way of greatness is also the path of life. Do we dare be great? How can we not?

September 30th If someone is suffering, let them pray. If some-one is happy, let them sing songs of praise. If someone is sick, ask the elders to come and anoint them with oil and pray for their healing. Confess your sins to one another. Be reconciled. Be renewed. Be whole. Restore one another to the community forged in God’s image. In other words, our theological language is meaningless apart from the way our language fosters the whole human experience. James might say that testifying alongside those who are robbed, de-ported, or discriminated against is a profoundly theological act. The church born of this testimo-ny, reflects a form of God-shaped humanity which flourishes, against the grain, in contexts of separation.

Seeds of Ministry Nuggets

September 2nd

In part of James' Epistle for today he focuses on com-munication - an important topic in today's world. He writes of the value of the value of listening and of keep-ing a cool head not only as ends in themselves but be-cause their opposite does not produce God’s justice or righteousness. There is a connection between our com-munication, verbal or physical, and our faithfulness to God. September 9th

James's Epistle today raises the long time question of being saved by faith or works. In Ephesians and other letters of Paul it is clear that Christians receive salvation through God’s grace rather than through any human ac-tion. This historic discussion although real, tends to be often overblown. James admits elsewhere that God saves the community of faith, giving birth to it through the word. Thus, James does not state that works alone bring salvation, rather than faithfulness. Rather, he says one’s actions make one’s faithfulness apparent. We are challenged to consider by what actions we make our faith visible, to think through how we put our faithful words into action. How do we do that today? September 16th

Though they have been with Him for a while it is appar-ent the disciples just do not fully "get it" yet. "Get behind me Satan!" He tells Peter. Jesus tells them to take up the cross. He is not talking about the suffering that is simply part of life in a broken world -- everything from annoying neighbors to serious illness to natural disas-ters. Neither is he telling us to seek out suffering or mar-tyrdom. Jesus speaks of losing our lives for his sake, and for the sake of the gospel. Taking up our cross means being willing to suffer the consequences of fol-lowing Jesus faithfully, whatever those consequences might be. It means putting Jesus’ priorities and purposes ahead of our own comfort or security. It means being willing to lose our lives by spending them for others -- using our time, resources, gifts, and energy so that oth-ers might experience God’s love made known in Jesus Christ. Consider do we do that as He asked?

Blessing Witness

‘You are part of the Body of Christ which is Redeemer Lutheran Church. Share a story / account / example / witness of God using your connection to the people of Redeemer to bless your life.’ Every Sunday during offering time because this is an offering. This would be awesome for Monday also. This congregation continues to be a huge part of our lives. Our church is a major way God blesses our lives, and opens up ways for us to touch lives with God’s love. Share a witness. Tell a story of God blessing your life through Redeemer Lutheran Church. Use the statement above as a guide. In August, we heard about a simple teaching about tithing going back to confirmation at Redeemer, about the Community Meal, about the new things happening at Redeemer (Interfaith HELP Center, Daisy Scouts), and the multiple ways a member has been a blessing. We are looking for every Redeemer member and friend to share a witness. You, and the Holy Spirit with you, can do it! Sheila Bauer challenges us all, “If I can do it, any one can.” To paraphrase Jesus’ words – Go and tell what you have seen and heard.

GOD’S WORK, OUR HANDS SUNDAY—SEPTEMBER 9th

Save the date! “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday will be Sunday, September 9, 2018. This day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. You work every day to make your community a better place. Let us continue doing this work together in 2018! View a short one-minute video hosted by ELCA Bishop Elizabeth Eaton at: https://www.elca.org/dayofservice [From the ELCA web site]

Locally, our church council is looking into a variety of service ideas. One project being planned is inside and outside work at The 1022 Club. The club provides respite for family members who care for loved ones with dementia or Alzheimer’s. Set aside September 9th, after worship, for service.

Outreach for Hope’s mission is to inspire giving to support Greater Milwaukee Synod ministries that provide hope to those living in poverty. These ministries, supported by the Family Bike Ride, enrich the lives of thousands in the Greater Milwaukee Synod area. Your support makes a difference:

7 medical clinics or parish nurses are possible.

16 summer youth programs are supported. 13 food pantries are available. 15 after school programs . 7,800 meals and food bags (weekly. 6,000 people weekly are welcomed at congregations receiving

Outreach for Hope funding.

Registration is open at ofhbikeride.com. Generous action grants will provide an additional $20 for each registered rider, virtual rider or volunteer AND an additional $10 for every donation raised. You will be a Champion of Hope when you participate in the Outreach for Hope

Mission Exploration Documents

In the course of this mission exploration process, we have gathered information, including in the form of documents. This has been shared along the way. In case you missed something or want to review, these documents are in the narthex:

ADULT BIBLE STUDY with Pastor Jon

Beginning Sunday, September 16, Adult Study and Sunday School meet at 8:30. Adult Study will be in the Gathering Room. We have been using Fr. James Martin, Jesuit priest, popular author and speaker; learning about prayer, Scripture, the importance of humor. We will continue to dip into the work of Fr. Martin from time to time. Interesting, solid theology.

With the election coming up, the airwaves will be inundated with political ads. This fall, in Adult Study, we will examine some of the claims made and issues raised in the ads, as well as statements by candidates in light of Scripture and Christian faith.

The more folks who participate, the greater the opportunity to learn from one another. Everyone is welcome any Sunday.

If you are unable to serve as scheduled, please try to switch with someone. Please call Marge Smits at 262-966-1075 if you are not

able to find someone to switch with. Thank you!

Please note that after 29 years, we will not have our annual Cookie Fair this year.

!!! BAGS BAGS BAGS !!!

Please save your plastic grocery bags*, make sure they are pretty clean, bring them to church, and put them in the box by the coat rack. We will turn them into

sleeping mats; some people who come to St. John’s Lutheran Church in West Milwaukee (our mission partner) for assistance are homeless. This is an idea which came up at the St. John’s – Redeemer picnic July 22.

*IMPORTANT – only the typical grocery bags, like you get at Piggly Wiggly, Kohl’s, Menards, etc. To weave the plastic to make the mats, only bags of that uniform size and thickness will work.

"August rushes by like desert rainfall,

A flood of frenzied upheaval, Expected,

But still catching me unprepared. Like a match flame

Bursting on the scene, Heat and haze of crimson sunsets.

Like a dream Of moon and dark barely recalled,

A moment, Shadows caught in a blink.

Like a quick kiss; One wishes for more

But it suddenly turns to leave, Dragging summer away."

- Elizabeth Maua Taylor, August-
