Her Journey’s Just Begun

Don’t think of her as gone away – her journey’s just begun,

Life holds so many facets – this earth is only one...

Just think of her as resting from the sorrows and the tears

In a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days and years.

Think how she must be wishing that we could know today

How nothing but our sadness can really pass away.

And think of her as living in the hearts of those she touched...

For nothing loved is ever lost — and she was loved so much.

We Love You!

~ Obituary ~

Mrs. Cora T. Washington was born on August 30, 1941 in Eastover, South Carolina. She was the youngest daughter of the late James “Jimmy” Thomas and the Sarah Pope Thomas. Cora slept away peacefully to be with Lord on July 14, 2019 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband Samuel “Sam” Washington. Her parents, her uncle Bennie Thomas, her three brothers Ernest Thomas, Henry Thomas, Joe Cleveland, three sister’s Rosa Lee Johnson, Maggie Jacobs, Elizabeth Wider, and her son Bernie Thomas, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Cora T. Washington attended the schools of Richland County Schools District One then moved to Trenton, New Jersey where she finished her education. Upon completion of school she entered the workforce. Her list of occupations included making parachutes and lifeboats, and private duty sitting. After living up north for over 20 years, she decided to return to South Carolina. She then worked as a cook for The Gleams Headstart program, did Private duty sitting, and worked as a cook for the Turner Child Development Center for many years. She was also a member of the Zoning Board of the City of West Columbia.

Mrs. Cora T. Washington joined and was baptized at the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church at an early age. After moving up north she became affiliated with the Shiloh Baptist Church. After her marriage to the late Mr. Washington, she became affiliated with the Turner Memorial AME Church. She became very active while a member, joining the Jubilee choir, the Mass choir, was a member of The LAY Organization, was on the Kitchen Staff, elected a Trustee, and was an officer with the Women’s Missionary Society, and served for many years.

Mrs. Cora T. Washington was a loving and caring person who loved helping others. Nothing could slow her down. She had a heart for people. She loved helping anyone who was in need. She opened her home to many and became a mother figure and grandmother to those in need. She had a bond with many that was unbreakable, and always strived to be there whenever she could. She loved spending time with family and putting events together that would bring about unity. Mrs. Cora T. Washington, also known as Ms. Cora, and Grandma would go quietly doing many unrecognized works around the church. She was always willing and would cook for any occasion. When working for the free lunch program sponsored by the church she would often come early and stay late preparing meals for the homeless and others in the community. You haven’t tasted collard greens until you’ve tasted Ms. Cora’s greens. Singing was another one of her favorite things to do in the church. She enjoyed learning new songs, learning to read music and the teachings of music. She also enjoyed visiting the sick and communing with the shut in on the first Sunday of the month. Whenever and wherever needed you could always count on Ms. Cora. She loved to play Bible Bingo, Solitaire, and word finder. Working in the community, traveling all over the world and cooking, cooking, cooking were her favorite pastimes. Mrs. Cora T. Washington, leaves to cherish precious memories, her son Michael S. Washington of West Columbia, South Carolina and three grandchildren Travis (Kristie) Pressley, of Hopkins, South Carolina, Mi’Shonae Washington, and Markies Washington of West Columbia, South Carolina; two great granddaughters of Hopkins, South Carolina; two god grandchildren, Deoshanae Wright and Zonnie Valentine; a brother James Thomas of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; two sisters -in –law: Gladys Thomas of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Easter Page of Eastover, South Carolina, a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives, and friends.
