4-H Camp Celebrates Another Successful Year Henry County 5th and 6th graders had an awesome week during the long-held tradition of 4-H camp at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center, which was held from June 23 to 27, where one hundred Henry County students, teen leaders and adults were among the more than 850 participants at the camp in Eatonton for the week. The daily schedule was packed with opportunities such as archery, canoeing, conservation, entomology, forestry, herpetology, lake ecology and the Health’s Our Pledge class. Campers also had time to enjoy one of two swimming pools as well as the campers’ favorite--the water slide. The week showcased a Native American theme and campers were treated to a presentation by Jonathan Winterhawk on the history and culture of local American Indians. Summer camp counselors and former 4-H’ers taught the classes and led a host of other activities for campers including the Variety Show, the Rock Eagle

Pageant, a tribal meeting at the campfire ring, cheers and chants to show their spirit, a hike to the Rock Eagle effigy and so much more. Students returning to Rock Eagle as second year campers had additional opportunities such as climbing the rock wall and traveling down on a zip line, taking a turn on the swing shot, sailing on the Rock Eagle lake and a night hike to and from Rock Eagle’s pioneer camp. Rock Eagle 4-H Center is situated adjacent to the Oconee National Forest and the camp encompasses 1,500 acres of forest land and includes a 110-acre lake. The camp opened in 1955 and is the largest of five centers operated by the University of Georgia in support of the state’s 4-H Program. The Rock Eagle Mound is a stone effigy shaped like a prone bird. The “bird” is made entirely of milky quartz rocks and was likely built about 2,000 years ago by Native Americans. It is necessary to climb to the top of a multi-story

Reducing crime and improving services,” he said. Amerman takes on the role of Deputy Chief following the departure of Joe Jackson, who retired from the post in May.

observation tower in order to view the “bird” which measures 120 feet from wingtip to wingtip, and 102 feet from head to “tail feathers.” At its highest point, it is 8 feet from the ground. Henry County’s camp delegation included students from 20 elementary, five middle, and one private school as well as home schools. Teen Leaders from four local high schools assisted the 4-H staff and adult volunteers who supervised campers. “The first year was a great experience. I also saw how much second year campers got to do and wanted to have that opportunity,” she said. “When I went to camp after fifth grade, I had never really been away from home, but everyone makes you feel so welcome. It’s a really great experience, the counselors, the activities. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!” Julia Mangual, a first-time camper, said her favorite parts of camp were canoeing and archery. Ashna

Patel, also a first-year camper, said she really enjoyed the pool with water slide and archery. She said camp was really fun. “You can make all new friends and if you stay in the program then you can become a camp counselor. The counselors there have lots of fun with you and you yell cheers until you lose your voice.” Jordan Johnson, a returning camper, saved his own money to be able to go back to Rock Eagle. “The first time I had such a great time,” he said. “It’s a fun place to go. There are so many activities and games. So much fun! You’ll never be bored and it’s worth every single penny.” The new 4-H year begins in August and 4-H Open House for students in 6th grade and above will be the evening of Monday, August 18.
