New Event to Focus on Workforce Training SolutionsIn surveys, listening sessions and meetings, manufacturers throughout Minnesota have expressed their concern about the skilled worker shortage and its impact on the global economy.To meet this challenge, Metro Alliance Customized and Continuing Education (MACCE) is sponsoring several Manufacturing Showcase events to be held on-site at MnSCU technical and community colleges. CTS will join member colleges to host this event at HTC on September 18th. This new event is part of a larger MACCE goal to encourage dialogue and partnership between colleges and industry to support collaboration on innovative workforce training solutions. page 38

HTC awarded grants though Minnesota Jobs Skills Program In the past six months, Hennepin Technical College (HTC), Customized Training Services (CTS), was awarded more than $608,000 in MJSP funding to develop and deliver training for three major Minnesota companies - Polaris, Medtronic and ConAgra.

By partnering with these businesses, HTC continues to expand and build expertise with supporting industry training goals and best practices. Through evaluating workforce training needs, identifying cost-effective options and implementing industry-standard solutions, CTS continues to lead the way in offering technical and soft skills training for business, manufacturing and industry. page 4

MnSCU Colleges Collaborate on Regional Safety TrainingHTC Customized Training Services is now partner-ing within the MnSCU system and developing the MnSCU Safety Training Council, which will open the door to a vast assortment of safety training opportunities for companies across Minnesota. Each customized training department across the state has developed their own specialized programs, and will now be sharing resources to benefit those clients whom they may have not had the opportunity to serve in the past. page 45

MAAC partners with EMERGEHTC will be opening up a third MAAC vLab location at EMERGE’s (www.emerge-mn.org/) new Career and Technology Center in North Minneapolis this fall. The MAAC team, along with Dr. Cervantes and Dr. Jack MacLennan (U.S. Department of Labor), toured the extensive renovation project on June 6th and saw what is the start of an exciting partnership between our two organizations. The services provided by EMERGE include case management, career training, and job placement. This location will compliment the manufacturing training MAAC will provide to under-served clients in North Minneapolis. page 40

HTC awarded grants though Minnesota Jobs Skills Partnership (MJSP) Program

In the past six months, Hennepin Technical College (HTC), Customized Training Services (CTS), was awarded more than $608,000 in MJSP funding to develop and deliver training for three major Minnesota companies - Polaris, Medtronic and ConAgra.

ConAgra ($290,000) is working with HTC to customize existing curriculum and develop new training for 335 employees at their Ralcorp Frozen Bakery Products plant in Fridley, MN. The company-wide training will improve employee breadth of understanding, general safety behavior and foundations for troubleshooting production issues as well as increase employee productivity and retention. HTC will benefit by expanding its training capacity in foundation skills in manufacturing and food processing settings.

Polaris ($92,405) is working with HTC in the upgrading of their CAD software from Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire to Creo 2.0. Polaris, HTC and New Vision Engineering Solutions will collaboratively develop three courses of curriculum tailored to the needs of Polaris.

A total of 267 employees will participate in hands-on training designed to improve the technical skills of CAD users, foster efficiency and support new product development. HTC will expand their capacity with state of the art CAD principles and techniques - which will be transferable to other industries.

Medtronic ($226,098) has partnered with HTC to develop training for 359 of their employees. Blending adult education, cultural learning styles and technical writing approaches, five new courses will be delivered with the majority of training targeting 317 production staff. The training will respond to Medtronic’s need to improve the communication level of technical instructions and the ability of production workers to articulate their role and demonstrate comprehension to a variety of audiences including regulatory agencies. HTC will increase their capacity through the development of medical device industry curriculum and delivery to diverse populations.

Management and Human ResourcesMindful Managers vs. Biased BossesHow aware are you of your decision making in leading or supervising others? Research shows that to some extent we are all influenced by our unconscious biases. Though we like to think we are subjective and rational, emotion comes into play in our choices. This workshop will present an overview of these tensions and then propose a way forward. Case studies and interactive exercises will be used to highlight how we tend to operate and ways to become more mindful. In all of his roles, he brings a passion for facilitating personal and organizational change. He has an M.A. in Human Resource Development, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership at the University of Minnesota.

Supervising a Multilingual WorkforceIn this four hour course, participants will be presented with both cultural awareness and communication strategies to assist them in their role of leading individuals who are non-native English employees. Concrete strategies will be presented so that you can build a “communication tool kit” from which to draw. Diversity, Culture & Language

The Midwest Cultural Exchange:The only program of its kind in the upper Midwest - the Midwest Cultural Exchange is designed to provide a unique opportunity for students from other countries, and au pairs, to enhance their cultural understanding of the U.S., improve their language skills, and broaden their knowledge of intercultural communication. In two Saturday sessions, students will receive instruction in English to improve their intercultural understanding and interpersonal skills; complete assignments to learn more about culture and life in the Midwest; present about the culture of their home country; and exchange ideas with other students from around the world. There are two unique workshops held every year - each Fall and Spring.

MCE I: Culture and LanguageStudents will learn about culture and life in the Midwest and U.S., and test their understanding of American and Minnesota cultural customs, including identifying the signs of culture shock and learning about dealing with its effects.Students will learn the basics of Intercultural Communication theories and conflict resolution strategies. There will be opportunities to share experiences and present on a cultural topic related to their native country.Please note: All participants must be able to attend both Saturdays to receive credit for the workshop. TESOL – Seminar for Teaching English as a Second LanguageIn this course on teaching English, you will focus on a different topic related to the Teaching of English as a Second Language on each Saturday. Andrea Potyondy- Smith has been working full time for Hennepin Technical College English Department since 2004. She graduated from MN State University, Mankato, in 2001 with an MFA in Creative Writing, and has completed a Master of Liberal Arts degree at Metropolitan State University.

She currently teaches Technical Writing, Writing and Research, and Intro to Creative Writing. She is the editor-at-large for the Wisport Cycling Series website, has had poems published in small literary presses, and has been a finalist for Chapbook competitions.

Using the Internet This course offers a brief history of the Internet and describes its primary features. Navigate a Web site when you know the URL, use search engines to locate Web sites of interest, and print and save Web pages. Send, receive, and reply to email messages. 1.5 CEU

Microsoft Outlook Use MS Outlook, a personal information management program, to perform communication and organizational tasks such as: sending, receiving, and filing email; organizing contacts; scheduling appointments, events, and meetings; creating a to-do list; and writing notes. 1.5 CEU.

Word — Part I **Create, print, and edit office documents such as letters and memos. Apply formats (bold, italics, and underline), use styles and themes, change paragraph alignment, explore indent options, create numbered and bulleted paragraphs, change line spacing, use format painter, set a variety of tabs using the ruler and dialog box methods, cut and paste text, and add borders and shading to paragraphs. A minimum typing speed of 30 WPM is recommended for this course. 1.5 CEU

Word — Part II **Improve documents with Spell Check, Grammar Check, and the Thesaurus. Change page setup options, create columns, add a watermark, create drop caps, use preset headers and footers, find and replace text, insert symbols, and create documents using Word templates. Word — Part III Create longer documents, control the flow of text in documents, and manipulate text between documents. Insert page numbers, headers, footers, footnotes, endnotes, and comments. Track document changes, find and replace special characters, explore hyphenation options, use hard spaces, and apply styles. 1.5 CEU

Word Graphics Enhance the visual impact of documents with borders, images, watermarks, drop caps, shapes, text boxes, organizational charts, and WordArt. Create a document in Word and save it as a Web document, download documents and images from a Web site, and add hyperlinks to a document. 1.5 CEU

Word Tables This course includes various ways to organize data. You will organize data into columns and rows with the tables feature, use tables to perform basic spreadsheet functions, format tables using a variety of format options and sort text in paragraphs, columns, and tables. You will also create a custom dictionary, a table of contents, an index, a table of figures, and a table of authorities. 1.5 CEU

Word Forms Use Word automation features such as Mail Merge, macros, and forms. Extract information from a mailing list into a letter using Mail Merge. Create macros to automate steps you would normally perform individually. Make a template for a form that includes text boxes, check boxes, and pull-down lists; save the form as a protected document; and key information into the fill-in boxes. Examples include an insurance application, invoices, and purchase orders. 1.5 CEU

Sheryl Bertrand With 30 plus years teaching experience, you might not think an instructor would still get excited to learn “what’s new” when new software versions come out, but that’s not the case with Sheryl Bertrand, an HTC instructor since 1981. Sheryl has been keeping up with innovations in computer and software applications since she began teaching data entry classes using a microcomputer system. Since then, she has learned and taught software programs in all their incarnations, and now teaches beginner to advanced Microsoft computer application courses.

Excel — Part IIICreate templates to duplicate a similar worksheet design or layout for several worksheets. Consolidate data found on multiple worksheets to one worksheet. Link worksheets. Using Excel to Analyze Data Use Excel to analyze loan information with Data Tables and Amortization Schedules. Determine the effects loan variables have on monthly payments and repayment schedules. (This process can be applied to various business applications). Further enhance worksheet efficiency with command buttons, scroll bars, check boxes, and spin buttons. Add new buttons to toolbars and commands to menus. Macros and VBA code are introduced. 1.5 CEU

Using Excel Databases Organize data to take advantage of Excel database features. Use a lookup formula to retrieve a value in a table and functions to find the sum, average, etc. of data that matches a criteria. Rearrange the order of records to facilitate quick access to information with the sort feature and perform searches with the filter feature. Analyze worksheet data using Pivot-Charts and PivotTables. Phlebotomy TechnicianThis 148-hour class is intended for those who have no experience and want to become employed as a Phlebotomy Technician in a clinical laboratory, medical clinic or public health department setting. The course includes 48 hours of classroom training and a 100-hour arranged clinical externship to provide you with a complete learning experience. Topics covered are phlebotomy equipment and procedures, blood collection by venipuncture and capillary punctures, basic anatomy as it relates to blood collection, safety procedures and professional ethics and liability. 14.8 CEUCourse Acceptance Criteria: 1.) On the last day the instructor did an exercise on the blackboard where all the students would name all the symptoms of chest pain, abdominal pain and shortness of breath. From its inception, the HTC community paramedic program was built around incorporating ITV Technology in the classroom, conveniently allowing students to attend classes via their personal computer, at home or from remote locations with Wi-Fi access. This delivery method puts students virtually in the classroom where they “attend” instructor lectures, demonstrations, and PowerPoint presentations. But easily interacting with the instructor or guest lecturer is just one of the benefits of this convenient technology.

“I enjoyed attending classes from my home – I wouldn’t have been able to attend this program while working full time”, said David Glendenning - Wilmington North Carolina. “I was even able to reach out to students throughout the country and see how other areas are implementing their community paramedicine programs.”

HTC trains community paramedics to provide health services where access to physicians, clinics or hospitals is difficult. Expanding access to health care for under-served groups in Minnesota and around the country has been shown to significantly reduce the costs for health care providers and taxpayers. Effectively reaching and training the potential students for this program, many of whom live

out-of-state, is an important part of the program’s success.

“Our students can attend from anywhere in the country, and this gives us the ability to work with potential candidates who otherwise could not attend on-campus,” said Kai Hjermstad, program coordinator for HTC’s Customized Training Services. “This option keeps us at the forefront of community paramedic training, because we can partner with health agencies and clinics that might otherwise not have the resources to run their own community paramedic training programs.”

M-STEP 2014 Featured PresenterThis year we are proud to host the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Founded in 1971, the center is based in Montgomery, Alabama, the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement.

The SPLC is internationally known for exposing the activities of hate groups within the U.S. and seeking justice for the victims of discrimination. They will present at M-STEP on the topic of radical extremist groups in the U.S.

Along with exposing and fighting civil rights abuses, the SPLC also runs the innovative “Teaching Tolerance” program, which distributes educational materials free-of-charge to educators to promote tolerance and respect in our nation’s schools.

Additional topics over the two days will range from safe school assessment, the use of social media during emergencies, effects of video gaming on aggression, protection of the national food supply, and a panel discussion of compassion fatigue.

Who Should Attend?This course is designed to teach the student about the joint Wellness-Fitness Initiative established by the International Association of Firefighters and the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the CPAT test. This initiative lead to the development of an evaluation tool called the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). Upon successful completion of the eight-event program, the student will receive a one year certificate of CPAT completion.

RequirementsThe requirements of the Candidate Physical Ability Test pre-test program include the following:

1. All candidates have the opportunity to attend at least two orientation sessions within eight weeks of taking the CPAT test.

2. Each candidate is provided with an opportunity to perform two timed practice runs within 30 days prior to the CPAT test.

Note: A Candidate may sign a waiver form to take the CPAT without participating in the Pre-testing portion of the Program. Candidate must sign a waiver at orientation meeting or at least 8 weeks prior to practice or test dates.

According to The State of Manufacturing®, a 2014 survey research project sponsored by Enterprise Minnesota and partners, Minnesota’s manufacturers are more confident in their firms’ future than at any point since 2009, but there remains a skills gap between employers and job seekers. To meet this challenge, Customized Training Services has partnered with Metro Alliance Customized & Continuing Education (MACCE) to invite local manufacturers and businesses to participate in a dedicated Manufacturing Showcase.Four additional MACCE member colleges plan to hold their own

on-site showcases, in September and October. The event is designed to encourage dialogue and partnership between colleges and industry by addressing the skills gap, focusing on solutions, and presenting training and development resources.

HTC Opens Doors of Virtual Manufacturing LabsIn the Fall of 2012, Hennepin Technical College’s Customized Training Service (CTS) received a $2.9 million U.S. Department of Labor grant to fund the creation of the Manufacturing Assessment and Advancement Center (MAAC). hennepintech.edu/maac Virtual Manufacturing Labs (vLabs) are being developed by MAAC in various locations throughout the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota. These labs feature hands-on simulators for various industries including: CNC Machining, Welding, and Automated Controls. Also included in the labs are 3D Printers, Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software, and online curriculum.

Matt Leaf, Director of MAAC noted, “Local manufacturers indicated that their biggest challenge was hiring a talented workforce and overcoming the skills gap. One way the vLabs will help shrink this gap is by making technical education more accessible and flexible. The crucial funding provided by the U.S. Department of Labor has greatly improved our ability to deliver this innovative educational model.” In April 2014, HTC held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the vLAB at their Brooklyn Park Campus. By Fall 2014, two additional vLABs will be opened at both the Eden Prairie Campus of HTC at EMERGE’s Career & technology Center in North Minneapolis.

Additional sites are also in the works at the Wright Technical Center in Buffalo, Minnesota and the Hennepin South Workforce Center in Bloomington, Minnesota.Besides the vLabs, MAAC is implementing a variety of innovative enrollment and support services to help students successfully achieve their higher education goals and, ultimately, start a new career or advance within their current one. For example, a Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) model is being developed that will assess students’ skills and award them college credit for learning acquired outside a college classroom. In addition, several of our on-campus classes are being converted to an online or blended format so that students can comfortably take courses on their own time.MAAC works to support a variety of people. Veterans returning from active duty are a large focus of this project. They have financial responsibilities and often need a degree to land a high paying job despite their specialized military training. MAAC can accommodate them by awarding college credit for applicable skills, as well as, connect them with HTC’s Veterans Resource Center to help them along the way. Those who have been granted Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) status or Dislocated Workers status are another focus of this

project. However, anyone who has an interest in the cutting-edge manufacturing sector can be served by the flexible, accessible curriculum and shortened time to earn an award based on CPL.

The MAAC program can help those who need to update their skills or attain new ones. Many options are available that lead to credentials, diplomas, or an Associate’s Degree and, ultimately, a new career in the expanding manufacturing field.

Meet The Instructor

John Lindstrom had been involved with HTC in one capacity or another for most of his many careers. Graduating from HTC with a degree in Architectural Mechanical Drafting in 1976, John partially credits designing sprinkler systems as a draftsman, for piquing his interest in fire prevention and industrial safety.

At 21, while working as a mechanical drafter, John signed on to be a volunteer firefighter in St. Louis Park, and discovered he liked it so much that he switched careers. After receiving his training from the HTC fire protection program he became a full-time firefighter in 1979, eventually becoming a Fire Investigator and Fire Marshall.

“My HTC training came full circle” John recalls, “As a Fire Marshall I inspected sprinkler systems, and because of my HTC training, I could read and understand the diagrams, allowing me to better judge their safety capabilities.”

Believing passionately that industrial safety training for businesses and employees is the best prevention for fires and accidents, John became an adjunct Industrial Safety Instructor at HTC. He now uses his in-depth fire and rescue knowledge to design industrial safety training solutions for businesses, companies and industry.

“I visit a site, evaluate their needs and then design a safety training program specifically for them” John explains

“I love my job... I don’t know of any other position that has such a wide variety... I do something different everyday.”

If you haven’t seen it yet – you probably will, because it’s hard to miss. Customized Training Services has rolled out a new mobile safety trailer. The re-purposed 22-foot trailer replaces an earlier non-mobile unit which was not versatile enough to meet all the training demands for CTS clients and customers.“We had a trailer for confined space training, however we felt we needed a better tool for doing hands-on training for a number of different subjects like confined space, HazMat, trenching, and fire extinguisher ” said Erik Gohl, CTS Industry Safety Coordinator.

“Our training takes us off-campus, to an employer’s site, and we needed a tool that could better meet the training goals.” said John Lindstrom, Adjunct Instructor for CTS Industrial Safety Training,

“In the past, we have been limited as to what we could do—because we could only use what the employer had on hand at their site. Now we can use the HTC safety trailer – and have maximum control over the training.”The new safety trailer, designed by Erik and John, became a reality when CTS purchased a trailer from a construction company with National PETE dollars. Configured for multiple uses, the trailer supports a wide

variety of training such as Confined Space Entry & Rescue, Trenching, Fall Protection, HazMat Responder, Incident Command, Lockout/Tagout, Fire Extinguisher and Fire Brigade training.After the trailer was purchased, Erik looked to HTC faculty and students to bring his vision to life – “The HTC welding instructors helped with the deck, ladder and vertical confined space hatch.” beamed Erik, “and HTC auto body students painted the trailer from white to black”. For the safety trailer wrap, Erik worked closely with Laura Holicky, an HTC web design student, to create a memorable and impactful graphic design. “The trailer looks even better than I imagined “ Erik continued “not only does it increase our training options, but it’s also a 22-foot rolling billboard for HTC and Customized Safety Training.” Since it’s completion in May, the new safety trailer has been on the move and used for confined space training in Bismarck, Plymouth, and Detroit Lakes. In June it was used for Confined Space Training at the Minneapolis airport and City of Minneapolis.The new 22-foot HTC Safety Trailer is sure to get attention wherever it goes. Asked what did he think the first time he saw the finished trailer? Erik enthusiastically replies “Ka-Pow!”

Pilot/Escort Driver Certification

Over 1,100 professionals engaged in the activity of escorting large loads have already taken this course to obtain the Minnesota state required pilot/escort driver certification this class provides upon its successful completion. The course consists of eight-hours of instruction on the state law and rules governing pilot/escort activities, provides training on pilot/escorting best practices, and finishes with an exam attendees are required to pass in order to obtain their state certification. Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA)The purpose of this course is to review how CSA works and how it affects not only industry, but drivers of vehicles weighing 10,000 pounds or more. It includes detailed explanation of qualification files and in depth training about log books.

Driving with a PlanThis two-hour class is recommended for the CDL and small fleet driver. The class is fast-paced and uses video footage from police, commercial vehicle, and traffic cameras to reinforce how to drive with a plan. Driving with a Plan IIThis two hour class is for all drivers, dispatch, and safety personnel who have been through Driving With a Plan in previous years. Some of the topics covered include texting and cell phone use, aggressive driving and road rage, target fixation and tunneling, and disciplined attention (how to improve driving skills with our eyes).

Hazardous Material Transportation (HazMat Training)The course offers training in the transportation of hazardous materials as it relates to commercial vehicle operation. It features updated Minnesota and Federal laws regarding the safe transportation of hazardous materials. It will cover USDOT HazMat communications standards, cargo tank and other packaging standards, loading and unloading requirements, hazardous materials load securement and background checks for HazMat endorsed drivers.

Roadside InspectionThe purpose of this course is to review a roadside inspection of vehicles weighing 10,000 pounds or more. It addresses all aspects of an inspection, including classroom and hands on exercises.

Motorcycle Safety Basic Rider Course (BRC)The Basic Rider Course is designed with the beginner in mind, but is a challenge even to experienced riders. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) supplies our curriculum and materials and our instructors are MSF-certified. The course includes The course includes both classroom and 10 hours of practice riding. We also provide the motorcycle, free of charge! Riders 18 and older can earn their motorcycle license by successfully completing the course. You must bring the required protective gear for on the range skills including: Eye protection, long-sleeved shirt/jacket, full-fingered gloves, long pants with no tears or

holes, sturdy footwear that covers the ankles, and a D.O.T. approved helmet, Parent/guardian signature is required for participants under 18 years of age. NOTE - If you are 18 or older you must have your motorcycle permit before attending class. Riders who have already failed a state and/or MMSC skill test twice are not eligible for the State Skill Test Waiver. All subsequent skill tests for a motorcycle endorsement must be taken at a DVS exam station. 1.45 CEU $160, 3 sessions

Courtesy Cab TrainingA training class for individuals who wish to obtain a license to operate a taxi at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport, (licensed issued by the Metropolitan Airports Commission - MAC) the City of Minneapolis (license issued by city) and the City of St. Paul (license issued by city). Course provides information on taxicab operation and ordinances from MAC, Minneapolis, and St. Paul. Students will learn safe driving techniques, geography, map reading, and professional behavior. Some homework is required between class sessions and attendance is mandatory at all sessions for successful completion of the course. 2.1 CEU$150, 6 sessions

Hennepin Technical College has been a proud partner with the Metropolitan Airport Commission and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul to provide 25 years of Taxi driver training for the Twin Cities. Our Courtesy Cab class is required for anyone seeking a taxi license for the Airport, Minneapolis or St. Paul. We have trained over 14,000 drivers during this time. We work with our partners to keep drivers up-to-date with rules and laws of the taxi ordinances, changing geography, events and trends in the local transportation industry. We train drivers to work professionally with passengers with different needs, backgrounds and styles of communication. We also inform them on how to keep their passengers and themselves safe.

Civilian Police Motorcycle Course (CPMC)The Civilian Police Motorcycle Course (CPMC) is an advanced, 8-hour course for experienced riders. The course uses the same techniques designed to train and keep police motor officers safe, day after day, in any weather and traffic situation. The course will develop coordinated fine-muscle control, balance, skill, and confidence, particularly in the areas of low-speed clutch, throttle and brake control with proper head, eye, and body position. Students learn to master tight and locked turns in confined spaces, as well as slow and 30 mph offset weaves, the intersection (iron cross), 40 mph brake-and-escape, J-turn, and formation riding. Riders must have at least 3 years or 12,000 miles of riding experience to take this course. 0.8 CEU $75, 1 session

Civilian Police Motorcycle Course Level 2 (CPMC2)Whether they’ve been riding for one year or twenty, riders need to keep learning. That’s where the Civilian Police Motorcycle Course Level 2 comes in. Riders hone their mental strategies to a razor-sharp edge in the classroom, and practice advanced motorcycle handling skills on their own bikes. Certified instructors draw from student knowledge and experience to coach riders to success. 0.5 CEU $50, 1 session
