In the spring of 2009, Fonda Stewart-Calvert was in the market for a new ob and looking for opportunities to use her skill set in a way that would be bene cial to others.

Fortunately, she now teaches computer applications classes to other displaced workers who are looking to brush up on their computer skills or learn new software.

“The classes offered through HTC Continuing Education are ideal for the adult learner who doesn’t have time to commit to a full semester of learning,” says Stewart-Calvert. “They’re also perfect for the ‘self-taught’ user, who learned just enough to use the tool to meet job demands, but don’t understand enough about the application to utilize it more effectively.

“I see many different types of learners, and it’s exciting to share my knowledge of the application as well as the ‘tips, tricks and shortcuts’ that can make using the application so much easier. Many of my students have commented on how relaxed and informal the setting is and how taking a class with me can be fun as well as a learning situation.

“I try to identify other ways they can use the tools in their personal lives, such as inventorying collections, creating a household budget, even using it to create greeting card lists for holidays and special events.

“The combination of being an instructor and using the tools in my everyday work life gives me a unique perspective on how to get the most out of the software to be effective and ef cient in the workplace,” says Stewart-Calvert.

The Customized Training Computer Center has relocated to our Eden Prairie Campus and now offers more trainingIn partnership with the local workforce center counselors, HTC will offer expanded capacity to train dislocated workers and ob seekers. Last year, more than 180 students enrolled in our instructor-supported, self-paced Microsoft Of ce and web design courses, among others. Flexible scheduling allows students the ability to work as quickly or as slowly as they prefer, so students complete courses at their own pace. Typically, after an initial meeting with an instructor to design a training plan, you set your own schedule for completing it, including up to 15 hours of one-credit courses. An instructor is available during open classroom hours to assist students. Our new location will offer expanded programming with a variety of continuing education and customized training programs. For example, short-term computer application courses can be offered to MAAC (Manufacturing Assessment & Advancement Center) students to supplement their training. The computer center is housed ad acent to the MAAC vLAB, and the center may support more than one class. Multiple students can independently pursue a variety of coursework, all within the same classroom, with the support of the shared instructor.

ou have the option to earn up to 15 college credits for completed coursework, which may be applied toward an HTC certi cate or degree. By studying at the Eden Prairie campus, you are not only introduced to campus life, but also to the many educational programs offered by HTC.

BPC, R, November 12, 8 am - 4 pm, Humphreys, 1 session, $395Maximizing QcCalc for Process ControlFor process control and improvement to be effective, a basic understanding of the process must be obtained. The control plan methodology reduces waste and improves the quality of products during design, manufacturing and assembly. This structured discipline provides a thorough evaluation of the product and process. Control Plans identify process characteristics and help to identify their sources of variation (input variables), which cause variation in product characteristics (output variables). Using the GageStation module of Prolink software (QcGage and QcCalc RT) will not only allow effective and ef cient data collection of measurements but also enable the learning and implementation of process control methods. QcGage allows integrating different measurement gages while QcCalc RT computes and furthers the monitoring of process control limits and subsequent actions.• Generate individual “spec plans to inspect

various parts• Create inspection reports along with process

control characteristics

• Conduct Gage R&R studies and interpret results• Export results to various database formats 1.6 CEU

New Course Offers the Opportunity for Engineers to Explore Creo Software UpgradeThrough a Minnesota Job Skills Partnership (MJSP) grant and a partnership with HTC’s Customized Training Services (CTS), Rick Montzka, Lead Instructor in Engineering CAD Technology, ust completed the design and delivery of a series of intense workshops about Creo 2.0 software for 240 engineers at Polaris Industries. Rick participated in the curriculum design phase, and then served as an instructor and classroom sub ect-matter-expert on the pro ect. The training pro ect was part of a much larger engineering software upgrade to Creo 2.0, and Polaris predicts the upgrade will save them as much as $2.6 million annually. But it’s not ust Polaris that will bene t. Rick captured, then realigned the lessons learned and practical applications that allow other users and companies to take full advantage of Creo’s 2.0 advances, and turned it into an eight-hour workshop that allows them to test drive all that Creo has to offer. Such training does not exist outside of a customized, specialized environment, and CTS was the bridge to assessing training needs, ful lling the MJSP grant, and using the deep technical knowledge at HTC to create the workshop. This workshop is now available for everyone thinking of making this upgrade investment or anyone who wants to take full advantage of the timesaving tools available in Creo.

There’s a new lab assistant at the MAAC training center at EMERGE in Minneapolis. Donald Ealey started in April 2015 as the CLA (College Lab Assistant), working directly with students.

Donald graduated from the HTC Manufacturing & Engineering Technology program and says he en oys working with diverse students at both locations. He believes that a career in manufacturing technology is a solid choice for students because “manufacturing is something that will always be needed, and the ob market is wide open.

Donald believes that many students don’t realize how many career opportunities are available in manufacturing. He notes that “employment opportunities range from working with companies like General Mills in Food Technology, to working in animatronics at a company like Disney.

At EMERGE, a Minneapolis-based community development agency that works with people facing signi cant obstacles in gaining employment, Don uses a virtual lab to introduce manufacturing careers to at-risk, low-income youth. He reaches out to potential students to give them a taste of what’s in store before, during and after graduation from the MAAC program. He believes the program can give students a “fast track in to the manufacturing world and career opportunities that might not otherwise exist for them.
