Step 1 – Install left and right seat support side rails (Figure 1)

Left-hand and right-hand side rails (10 and 12) for supporting the seat are to be bolted to the floor framework of the race car. It is the purchaser’s responsibility to weld to the vehicle floor framework, front and rear mounting brackets (14 and 16) for each side rail at appropriate forward-rearward and side-to-side spacings to align with mounting holes (18 and 20) in the front and rear ends of the side rails. Apply thread locking compound to bolts (22) and insert bolts through each bracket and each mounting hole at the front and rear of each side rail. Ensure that seat mounting plates for each side rail extend upward and are positioned with their respective holes aligned. Initially, attach nuts (24) to each mounting bolt and hand tighten but leave nuts slightly loose. After confirming proper alignment of the side rails (10 and 12), tighten all bolts (22) and nuts (24) to bolt/nut manufacturer’s torque specifications.

Step 2 – Attach seat shell to seat support side rails (Figures 2 and 2A)

The left and right sides of the seat shell (26) have integrally formed mounting plates (28) on the outward side of the seat, each with a total of six mounting holes. Insert the seat shell between the left and right side rails and manipulate the seat shell to align two of the mounting holes in each of the left and right mounting plates until aligned with the two holes in the upstanding mounting plates (30) on the side rails (See Figure 2A). Apply thread locking compound to mounting bolts (32) and insert bolts with washers through the holes of each side rail and into the aligned holes in the side mounting plates of the seat shell. Note: The side mounting plates on the seat shell may be equipped with threaded bores to receive the bolts or may be unthreaded. If unthreaded, attach a lock nut to each bolt and initially hand tighten each bolt, leaving slightly loose. After confirming proper alignment of the seat shell (26), tighten all mounting bolts (32) and any lock nuts to bolt/nut manufacturer’s torque specifications.

Step 3 First Option – Install brackets for shoulder harness (Figures 3, 3A and 3B)

Two bracket plates (34) and mounting hardware (36 and 38) are provided for the left and right shoulder harness straps (See Figure 3A). NOTE: Only one set of the bracket plates (34) and the mounting hardware (36, 38, 44) are provided to each purchaser with the first seat purchased; it is the purchaser’s responsibility to obtain proper bracket plates (34) and mounting hardware (36, 38, 44) for all subsequent seat purchases. The bracket plate must be fabricated of magnetic steel with a thickness no less than 0.120 inches. There must be at least 0.165 inches of material between the edge of the plate and the mounting holes.

Each bracket plate has tabs (40 and 42) at its opposite ends with holes in each tab which align with one another. The tabs must be fabricated of magnetic steel with a thickness no less than 0.120 inches. There must be at least 0.225 inches of material between the edge of the tab and the hole. The base of the tab, were the tab is attached to the plate, must be no less than 0.95 inches wide. One tab (40) on each bracket is larger than the other tab. Position the roller sleeve (38) between the two mounting tabs (40 and 42) in alignment with the holes in the tabs and then insert the elongated bolt (36) first through the enlarged tab (40), then through the sleeve (38) and then through the smaller tab (42). Apply thread locking compound to the protruding end of the bolt and attach the lock nut (44) to the bolt (36).

A mounting plate (46) is integrally formed in the rearward side of the seat shell at the upper end of the seat back. In one form of the seat shown in Figures 3 and 3B, the mounting plate (46) is formed with four harness slots (48) (two left hand slots and two right hand slots) which form a total of four harness bracket mounting locations (two upper locations and two lower locations each with four threaded mounting bores above and below a mounting slot) for attachment of the shoulder harness brackets to provide adjustment according to the height of the driver (See Figure 3). Select the appropriate mounting locations and insert the tab side of the mounting bracket from the rear of the seat shell to protrude forwardly through the elongated slots (48) of the selected locations. IMPORTANT: The enlarged tab (40) of each bracket plate (34) must be positioned toward the center of the seat shell so that the enlarged tabs are adjacent one another (See Figure 3B), so as to better accommodate a HANS device between the straps of the shoulder harness. Manipulate the harness brackets to align the four corner holes with the four corresponding holes in the seat shell above and below the elongated slot at each mounting location. Apply thread locking compound to four bolts (50) and insert the bolts, with washers, through the four mounting holes in each bracket into threads in the four holes of the seat shell at each mounting location. Tighten each bolt to the bolt manufacturer’s torque specifications.

Step 3 Second Option – Install brackets for shoulder harness (Figures 3C, 3D and 3E)

In an alternative form of the seat, the mounting plate (46a) in the rearward side of the seat shell at the upper end of the seat back has only two enlarged rectangular openings (48a), one left hand opening and one right hand opening, as mounting locations for the shoulder harness bracket plates (34a). Each opening (48a) has a set of threaded mounting bores above and below the opening (48a) for attachment of the shoulder harness brackets.

Two bracket plates (34a) and mounting hardware (bolt 36a, roller sleeve 38a, and lock nut 44a) are provided for the left and right shoulder harness straps. NOTE: Only one set of the bracket plates (34a) and the mounting hardware (36a, 38a, 44a) are provided to each purchaser with the first seat purchased; it is the purchaser’s responsibility to obtain proper bracket plates (34a) and mounting hardware (36a, 38a, 44a) for all subsequent seat purchases. The bracket plate and its tabs (40a and 42a) must be fabricated of magnetic steel with a thickness no less than 0.120 inches. There must be at least 0.165 inches of material between the edge of the plate and the mounting holes. There must be at least 0.225 inches of material between the edge of the tab and the tab hole. The base of the tab, where the tab is attached to the plate, must be no less than 0.95 inches wide.

Each bracket plate (34a) has holes which align with corresponding holes in the seat shell above and below the openings (48a) at each mounting location. To adjust for the height of the driver, mounting tabs (40a and 42a) for the mounting hardware (36a, 38a, 44a) are not attached to the bracket plates (34a) until the driver is fitted to the seat. To do so, the bracket plates (34a) are temporarily attached to the mounting plate (46a) and the driver is then seated in the seat to ascertain the optimal height of the shoulder harness straps on the bracket plates (34a) relative to the driver. The appropriate locations for the mounting tabs (40a and 42a) and for the mounting hardware (36a, 38a, 44a) are marked on the bracket plates (34a). The bracket plates (34a) are then removed from the mounting plate (46a) for welding of the tabs (40a and 42a) to the plates (34a).

The mounting tabs (40a and 42a) may be welded to the forward side of the bracket plates (34a) to protrude forwardly through the openings (48a). As an alternative, the tabs (40a and 42a) may be welded to the rearward side of the bracket plates (34a) to protrude rearwardly from the openings (48a). In this case, slots (45a) must be cut in the center of the bracket plates (34a) to allow the shoulder harness straps to pass forwardly through the bracket plates (34a) and through the openings (48a) without chafing or rubbing of the straps against the bracket plates (34a). In this configuration of the bracket plates (34a), the shoulder harness straps exert compressive force against the bracket plates (34a) and against the tabs (40a and 40b).

IMPORTANT: One tab (40a) of each bracket is larger than the other tab (42a). In each installation of the tabs (40a or 40b), the enlarged tab (40a) of each bracket must be positioned toward the center of the seat shell so that the enlarged tabs (40a) are adjacent one another (Figure 3B), so as to better accommodate a HANS device between the straps of the shoulder harness.

When the tabs (40a and 42a) have been welded to the bracket plates (34a), install the bolt (36a) and roller sleeve (38a). Position the roller sleeve (38a) between the two mounting tabs in alignment with the holes in the tabs and insert the bolt (36a) first through the enlarged tab (40a), then through the sleeve (38a) and then through the smaller tab (42a). Apply thread locking compound to the protruding end of the bolt (36a) and attach the lock nut (44a) to the bolt.

When the fabrication of the bracket plates has been completed, apply thread locking compound to bolts (50a) and insert the bolts, with washers, through the mounting holes in each

Step 4 – Install seat back mounting bracket (Figures 4 and 4A)

It is the responsibility of the purchaser to provide the roll cage structure of the race car with a horizontal back bar (52) immediately adjacent the upper end of the seat back of the seat shell for mounting of the back mounting bracket (54) between the mounting plate (46) on the seat back and the roll cage. The roll cage mounting bar must accommodate three mounting bolt locations (56) aligned with those on the lower horizontal angle plate (54A) of the back mounting bracket.

NOTE: Only one back mounting bracket (54) is provided to each purchaser with the first seat purchased; it is the purchaser’s responsibility to obtain proper back mounting brackets (54) for all subsequent seat purchases. The bracket plate must be fabricated of 0.090 inch thick 4130 grade magnetic steel.

First, attach the back mounting bracket to the mounting plate on the rear of the seat back. Two sets of threaded bores are formed in the seat back mounting plate to accommodate differing heights of the horizontal roll bar. Position the vertical plate (54B) of the back mounting bracket with its three holes in alignment with a selected set of the bores in the seat back (See Figure 4). Apply thread locking compound to three mounting bolts (58) and insert each bolt, with washer, through the holes in the vertical plate of the back mounting bracket into the selected threaded bores in the seat back mounting plate. Initially, hand tighten the bolts but leave slightly loose.

The three holes in the horizontal plate (54A) of the back mounting bracket should now be aligned with threaded bores pre-formed in the horizontal bar (52) of the roll cage. Apply thread locking compound to three bolts (60) and insert the bolts, with washers, through the holes in the horizontal plate of the back mounting bracket and into the threaded bores in the horizontal roll bar. Initially, hand tighten the bolts, leaving slightly loose. After confirming proper alignment of the back mounting bracket (54), tighten all bolts (58 and 60) to the bolt manufacturer’s torque specifications.

Step 5 – Install anti-submarine belt (Figures 5 and 5A)

The seat bottom of the seat shell is provided with a mounting plate (62) formed with three sets of threaded bores (See Figure 5) for attachment of eyelet plates (64) (See Figure 5A) for the anti-submarine belt, to accommodate the anti-submarine belt or belts for either five or six point harnesses and to accommodate different size drivers. Select the appropriate bore or bores according to the type of harness to be used with the seat (use the center set of bores for five-point harnesses; use the outer sets of bores for six-point harnesses) and according to the driver. Attach the eyelet plate or plates (64) for the anti-submarine belt or belts (66) to the selected bore or bores using a bolt (68) with a shoulder washer (70), as shown in Figure 5A. Seat the shoulder washer in the bottom side of the hole in the eyelet, and then insert the bolt through the hole in the eyelet from the upper side of the eyelet and through the shoulder washer at the opposite side of the eyelet. Apply thread locking compound to the end of the bolt and thread into the selected bore in the seat bottom. Tighten to the bolt manufacturer’s torque specification.

15

Step 6 – Install lap belts (Figure 6)

The left and right upright side walls (72) of the seat shell are formed with a series of three mounting holes for attachment of the mounting eyelet plate (74) of left and right side lap belts (76), in similar manner to that described above for the installation of the anti-submarine belt. The holes may be threaded as part of integral mounting plates in the sidewalls of the seat shell, or may be unthreaded through holes. Select bolts, and, if necessary, locknuts according to whether the holes are threaded or unthreaded and attach the eyelet plate of each of a left and right side lap belt using the selected bolts and shoulder washers in the same manner as described above in step 5 for installing the anti-submarine belt. Insert the bolt through the hole in the lap belt eyelet plate from the inside face of the plate and, at the opposite side of the plate, through a shoulder washer. Apply thread locking compound to the bolt and insert the bolt through a selected one of the holes in the sidewall of the seat shell. If threaded, tighten the bolt to manufacturer’s torque specifications into the threaded bore. If unthreaded, attach a lock nut to the protruding end of the bolt at the outward side of each sidewall and tighten the bolt to manufacturer’s torque specifications.

Step 7 – Install shoulder belts (Figure 7)

Install the free strap end of left and right hand shoulder belts (78) to the shoulder harness brackets previously installed by threading each strap end around the rotating sleeve (38) and then through the buckle of the shoulder belt according to the belt manufacturer’s guidelines.

Step 7A – Adjust all belts

Adjust each belt strap for each of the shoulder belts, lap belts, and antisubmarine belt or belts to position the securing buckle for the belt as close as possible to the belt anchoring point on the seat shell. Note: if desired, all of the shoulder, anti-submarine and lap belts may be secured to the seat shell before installation of the seat shell into the race car, according to each purchaser’s preferences.

Step 8 – Install headrest mounting bracket (Figure 8)

NOTE: multiple styles of headrests are possible. The seat is provided with a headrest mounting bracket (80), trapezoidal in shape, intended to be universal to the majority of possible headrests. It is the purchaser’s responsibility to select a headrest compatible with the seat.

NOTE: Only one mounting bracket (80) is provided to each purchaser with the first seat purchased; it is the purchaser’s responsibility to obtain proper mounting brackets (80) for all subsequent seat purchases. The mounting bracket (80) must be fabricated of 0.090 inch ±0.003 inch thick magnetic steel, or 0.250 inch ± 0.003 inch thick 6061-T6 aluminum.

Install the headrest mounting bracket to the mounting plate (46) on the upper end of the seat back of the seat shell. The headrest mounting bracket is provided with three spaced tabs (82) at its longer lower edge, which are spaced apart from one another in correspondence to three threaded bores in the upper edge of the seat back mounting plate (46). Position the headrest mounting bracket at the upper end of the seat back with the holes in the mounting tabs aligned with the holes in the seat back mounting plate. Apply thread locking compound to three bolts (84) and insert the bolts, with washers, through the tabs in the headrest mounting bracket into the threaded bores in the seat back mounting plate. Tighten the bolts to manufacturer’s torque specifications.

Step 10 – Install headrest connecting bracket (Figures 10A and 10B)

The seat shell has wing portions (90) projecting forwardly from the upper end of the seat back for mounting to forwardly projecting arms (92) of the headrest via interconnecting brackets (94). The wing portions are formed with integral mounting plates having a series of mounting bores. The mounting plate flanges of the interconnecting brackets must be constructed of magnetic steel with a thickness of 0.090 inches ±0.003 inches. The support braces for the interconnecting brackets must be made of magnetic steel, with thickness no less than 0.060 inches. The interconnecting brackets have a corresponding series of holes to attach to the outward surface of each wing portion (90). The opposite end of each interconnecting bracket is formed with a series of holes for similar attachment to the forwardly projecting arms (92) of the headrest. Note: It is the purchaser’s responsibility to ensure that a corresponding series of threaded bores are formed in the arm portions of the headrest. Install the interconnecting brackets by positioning each bracket with its series of holes aligned with the corresponding bores in the wing portions of the seat shell and the arm portions of the headrest. Apply thread locking compound to a corresponding number of bolts (96) and insert the bolts with washers through the holes in the interconnecting brackets into the threaded bores in the seat back wing portions and the headrest arm portions. The interconnecting bracket (94) between the headrest arm portion (92) and the upper seat wing portion (90) on the inboard side of the seat structure is formed with a pair of bracket ears (104) (see Figure 10B) to accommodate the mounting of a bracing rod (106) between the headrest area of the seat structure and an inboard location (108) on the roll cage structure of the race car, as depicted in Figure 12. The installation of such a bracing rod is optional according to the preferences of the purchaser, but is highly recommended by Hendrick Motorsports. If installed, the bracing rod should be in the form of an elongated metal tie rod with eyelet portions (110) at each opposite end for securement between the bracket ears of the interconnecting headrest bracket via a nut and bolt securement (112 and 114). The opposite end of the brace rod must be secured in identical fashion to a central location on the role cage structure at an inboard spacing from the seat structure.
