DAILY REPORT ON RAIN AND FLOOD EMERGENCY
RESPONSE 2015, IN PAKISTAN
Relief Activities Detail
OVERVIEW OF THE DISASTER IN CHITRAL On July 16, 2015 at around 12:00 to 1:00 hours (Midnight), District Chitral have struck by an unusual and unprecedented
torrential / orographic rain and series of GLOF event in the western side of the Chitral River. The orographic rain followed by
thunderstorm, cloud outburst and have triggered the GLOF events which caused destruction. Chitral in the current week
have average maximum 40.8oC temperature as per Pak-Met Department (PMD) and PDMA have also circulated the weather
forecast that rain and thunderstorm along with showers is expected in isolated part of Malakand Division. The same have
also been circulated among all concerned by the DDMU for preparedness. The Irrigation Department Chitral have also
identified High Level flood in Chitral River in addition to the identification of vulnerable spots of riverine flood. The 17-
Division camp at Gaherait have also been taken in loop of dissemination of alerts for evacuation of the communities living in
the river catchments and beds.
The rain/cloud outburst followed by GLOF event of July, 2015, in isolated catchments of various goals (tributaries) in Chitral
District at various intervals of times has resulted in floods that were accompanied with debris/boulders/large boulders flows
causing (1) washing out of heads/diversions arrangements / head reaches and general filling-up of most of the civil channels
/ Government Channels with damages to hydraulic structures (2) damages to buildup properties and agricultural land (3)
damages to roads and bridges (4) damages to existing flood protection works (5) damages to Water supply schemes (6)
filling of the Nallas that may spill out from banks causing further damages in case of future floods.
