Women In BusinessWe all left the November meeting

feeling like social butterfl ies as Whitney Bingham gave a great presentation on the In’s and Out’s of advertising and promot-ing through social media. With so much information and so little time we are looking at March dates to continue this segment with a hands-on workshop. So, there’s still time to ask Santa for a new lap top, tablet or iPad and plan to bring it to the workshop where we will be able to an-swer questions and make suggestions for your own personal/ business pages.

On December 12th beginning at 8:08 am we will be discussing how to manage the holiday blues – we don’t mean the mu-sical type. Although the Christmas season

is full of joy and wonder, as women we oft en struggle and question ourselves dur-ing this time. Come and hear about ways to manage and cope with these emotions before they rule your holiday.

If you haven’t liked or followed our Facebook page All Women in Business, please do so. Th is is where we post up to date information about upcoming meet-ings, classes and fun. We also celebrate our victories as we grow and succeed in the business world.

December 12, 8:08 am at the Tooele Technical College

We hope to see you and a friend as we learn and grow from each other.

Whether you are still in high school looking to continue your education aft er gradua-

tion or a stay-at-home parent re-entering the workforce or a seasoned career person looking for a change education is not cheap. When looking at diff erent oppor-tunities to help pay for your education be sure to check out the many scholar-ship that are available. Below are some tips found on the SallieMae website. My personal favorite is be creative: there really is a scholarship given out that involves making an outfi t out of Duct Tape. Th e possibilities are endless just look for them!

Th e following information was found at www.salliemae.com/college-planning/col-lege-scholarships/apply-for-scholarships/

When paying for college, always explore scholarship opportunities before consider-ing federal or private student loans. Col-lege scholarships are free money that you don’t need to pay back. Th ere’s no limit to the amount of scholarships you can apply for—so apply for as many as you can.

Where to fi nd and apply for college scholarships

Here are four ways to fi nd scholarship opportunities:

• Look at your hobbies in a new way. You may not think of your hobbies and interests as a way to help pay for school, but you should. Th ere are college schol-arships out there for everyone: craft ers, gamers, vegans, green thumbs, Trekkies—you name it. Scholarships aren’t just for straight-A students or all-star athletes.

• Register for Scholarship Search. It helps you fi nd scholarships that match your skills, activities, and interests. You can even set up customized alerts to notify you when a new scholarship that matches your profi le becomes available.

• Meet with your school counselor and others. Discuss your plan to pay for college with your school counselor and ask about scholarship opportunities that might be right for you. Also, keep your eyes and ears open in your community. You might hear of college scholarship opportunities through your church, your job, or your parents’ jobs.

• Consider scholarships for minority students. If you’re a minority student,

there are scholarships available that can help you pay for school.

When to apply for scholarshipsApply for scholarships early and oft en.

Some scholarship deadlines are as early as a year before you start college. You don’t need to wait until you’ve made your fi nal decision about your school to apply.

But don’t worry if you missed out on some of the earliest scholarship ap-plications. Th ere are lots of scholarship opportunities out there, all with diff erent deadlines.

Apply for scholarships every year you’re in college, too—there are many scholar-ships for current college students.

Scholarship application tipsAs you get ready to apply for college

scholarships, keep in mind that diff erent scholarships have their own qualifying criteria and require certain documents. Th ese tips can help as you choose which scholarships to apply for:

• Be careful. You shouldn’t have to pay for scholarships or for scholarship search-es. School counselors and school fi nancial aid offi ces can recommend reputable op-tions, like our free Scholarship Search tool.

• Be thorough. Don’t overlook smaller scholarships. Even a few hundred dollars can help off set the cost of textbooks and supplies.

• Be honest. Don’t exaggerate your grades, memberships, skills, or qualifi ca-tions. You’re more likely to receive scholar-ships if you apply for the ones that match your interests and skills.

• Be proactive. Apply for scholarships every year you’re in college. Approximately 50 percent of available scholarships are for students already enrolled in college.

• Be diligent. Pay attention to details. Some scholarships require you to write an essay while others may want letters of recommendation. Send in what’s requested and proofread everything. Typos and missing materials can be the diff erence between winning or losing a scholarship.

• Be on time. Some scholarships are very quick and easy to apply for. Others take a little more time. Meet all deadlines. If the scholarship application can’t be submitted electronically, use certifi ed mail. Missing a deadline could disqualify you.

How to pay for that continued education no matter your ageCheckout these scholarship tips

with a concentrated eff ort to promote and sponsor many diff erent races it will bring people here from outside the county and will help the local retailers, gas stations, restaurants, motels, medical services, and automotive businesses. Th ey like to use Moab as an example and how tourism has helped the local community with thriving businesses, lower taxes for the residents, and lots of sustainable great outdoor activities. Th ey also plan to work with

local nonprofi t organizations to help raise money for a variety of causes.

To make this happen they are partnering with the Tooele County Chamber of Com-merce and Tourism and other local racing organizations and clubs. Race Tooele plans to start sponsoring several diff erent types of races this next year including running, horse, bicycle, ATV, motorcycle, and car races. Th e Resolution Run at midnight on New Year’s Eve, January 1st is the fi rst of many races to come from Race Tooele. If you have questions or would like to get involved with Race Tooele please contact them at www.Racetooele.com or call 877-310- RACE (7223).

New Year’s DayMonday, January 1, 2018Chamber Office ClosedHappy New Year

The beauty industry is booming across the county and at the Tooele Technical College. Tooele Tech’s

Barbering and the Cosmetology/Barbering Programs have had some big changes over the last several months. We have moved from the Community Learning Center to the main campus in the new “industrial chic” salon at 88 S Tooele Blvd, and we have made improvements to our enroll-ment and curriculum.

To enhance the students’ education, the public, friends, and family are invited to come in and receive services. Clients can schedule appointments Monday through Friday between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM, and walk-ins are welcome, call 435-248-1886. Get a haircut, color, or face shave!

The Barbering program is a 1000-hour program. Students learn the fundamentals of haircutting, face shaving, shampooing, beard design, scalp treatments, and the soft skills and business skills needed to be successful in a Barbershop or Salon. After graduation, students have several options such as opening their own shop, working

in a shop, becoming an educator for hair shows, or mentoring other students.

The Cosmetology/Barbering program is a 1600-hour program. Students will learn necessary skills in haircutting; shaving, haircolor, chemical texture services, facial waxing, basic esthetics, eyelash extensions, manicures, pedicures, basic nail care, acrylic nails, as well as the soft skills and business skills that will help them become successful in this industry. Graduates have gone on to own their own salon, work in a booth rent or commission salon, become platform artists for hair shows, become brand educators, and much more!

Tooele Tech’s Cosmetology/Barbering Instructor program trains students to be effective instructors, qualified to teach in a school. During the 100-hour program, students will learn different learning styles, effective teaching methods, and ways to teach on the lab floor and theory classroom. Many students go on to teach in various Cosmetology or Barbering schools, as well as take apprentices.

Beauty in the making

Over the river and through the woods? To grandmothers’ house we safely

go! Here are a few tips from AAA to help with your safe holiday

travel plans. May we all have a safe, enjoy-able holiday with our family and friends.

Whether you’re heading to Grandma’s cottage or a favorite vacation spot to cele-brate holidays with family or friends, AAA has simple tips to help make your drive a smooth one, so you can arrive at your destination safely and without incident.

• Ensure your vehicle is properly main-tained. If maintenance is not up to date, have your car and tires inspected before you take a long drive.

• Map your route in advance and be pre-pared for busy roads during the most popular times of the year. If possible, consider leaving earlier or later to avoid heavy traffic.

• Keep anything of value in the trunk or covered storage area.

• If you’re traveling with children, re-mind them not to talk to strangers. Go with them on bathroom breaks and give them whistles to be used only if the family gets separated.

• Have roadside assistance contact in-formation on hand, in case an incident occurs on the road.

• In case of an emergency, keep a cell phone and charger with you at all times. AAA and many other compa-nies offer smartphone applications that enable motorists to request help without making a phone call.

With a little prep, you can leave the road-trip stress at home and enjoy your holiday with family and friends.

Your company can make a difference this winter and help clean up

Utah’s air by taking part in the Clear the Air Challenge.

Winter is coming and with it the unwelcome reality of air pollution. Poor air qual-ity means increased illness and health complications, environmental problems and diminished quality of life for all Utahns.

The Clear the Air Challenge is a Salt Lake Chamber initiative and is all about improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and conserving energy by eliminating unnecessary vehicle trips. By simply eliminating a few vehicle trips throughout the week, you and your em-ployees can make a big difference in your community.

The Clear the Air Challenge has already helped significantly improve Utah’s air quality. Over the last eight years, Challenge participants have collectively eliminated over 998,000 trips, saved over 13.5 million miles, reduced over 4,700 tons of emissions and saved over $6 million.

Clear air is important to us. The Chal-lenge is an excellent opportunity to do something to make a positive impact and be a part of the solution.

We encourage you and your employees to take the Challenge and see firsthand what a fun and empowering experience it can be. See how many pounds of emis-sions, gallons of gas and dollars we can save when we work together!

This year’s Challenge takes place Febru-
