Greetings from the Fifth and Sixth Grades,
Christmas Break was enjoyed by everyone, but now we are ready for a brand new year. The class is looking
forward to many things in 2015—Arison, the 100th day of school, and fieldtrips to name a few.
Our new class novel is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. We’ll be discussing point of view, mood, and visualization
techniques. We are integrating technology with our English by writing Cinquain poems (5 unrhymed lines, each with
a set number of syllables) on Storybird.com. Here are just a couple of examples:

K-2: The Lord’s Prayer – The Second Petition -- “Thy kingdom
come.”
3-8: The Lord’s Prayer -- The Second Petition and Meaning – “Thy
kingdom come. What does this mean? The kingdom of God certain-
ly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that
it may come to us also. How does God’s kingdom come? God’s
kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit,
so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives
here in time and there in eternity.”

A Note From The Principal………….. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (by Judith Viorst)…If you haven’t read it,
you should. It is a great book, a true children’s classic, full of all of the things that make everyday life so chal-
lenging sometimes. I can soooo… relate.
For instance, when Alexander wakes up in the morning, he has gum in his hair, trips on a skateboard, and
drops his sweater in the sink while the water was running. That did not happen to me, but I did forget I had Pre-
school art and we were painting and I wore a white blouse.
Alexander’s brothers got prizes in their cereal boxes, but Alexander just got cereal. I cannot quite relate to this. I never
even enter contests, because I never ever win. Even opening the cereal box seems like a waste of time.
At counting time, Alexander left out 16. I often leave things out. In fact, it seems as I get older, I leave even more things
out.
At lunch, Alexander’s friends all had great desserts packed in their lunchboxes. Alexander had no dessert. I packed my-
self a wonderful lunch, with some of my favorite foods. Then I left it at home on the kitchen counter.
Alexander’s brother made him fall in the mud and then he got in trouble for being dirty. I was helping a preschooler cut
paper and they actually cut my finger (who would have guessed those safety scissors were that sharp?).
Alexander’s brothers got really cool looking sneakers. They didn’t have Alexander’s size, so he got white. I drove to Per-
ryville for a meeting…that was actually in Cape (my car just seemed to know where it was going…).
That night, when Alexander went to bed, his cat went and slept with his brother. Sometimes my cats do come to bed with
me…and play and bounce and pounce all night.
All throughout the book, Alexander kept saying he was going to go to Australia. That, of course, is silly. Australia is too
far. I will settle for Tennessee.
Sometimes our days just do not go as planned. Sometimes it is because of what we have done and sometimes it is com-
pletely out of our hands. What a blessing to know that even when things are out of our hands that we are in His hands. Terrible,
horrible, no good, very bad days? Sure, they happen. But our Father’s love for us supersedes any troubles this world can throw at
us. Have a blessed day, secure in the knowledge that we are in the Hands of a Loving God.
