Unseasonably cool and rainy weather during part of August sent many summer visitors home from the Michigan resorts ahead of the usual time and few came to take their places. There was a noticeable thinning out at the Paw Paw Lake resorts. There is usually a large crowd over from Chicago for the Labor Day weekend and with the return of good weather the hotels are preparing for a big weekend which officially marks the dosing of the resort season. While the past season has not been what might be called a rushing one, it may be considered as a fairly average one.

One of the prettiest sights that Watervliet has to offer during summer are the flower gardens of W.W. Fisher, 1%

miles south of town. T te demand for Us flowers has been so heavy that his flower beds are now rather thin, but he has new ones coming in and eipects to have 900 glads in blossom over Labor Day.

The Wstervllet public schools bus program will be revised from a double bus run to s single bus run this coming year, If voters ap-prove the 2 mill property tax proposal September 12.

Last week the WatervUet School Board accepted a report setting up a single bus run program to replace the previous double-mn system. If the rax issue is approved. The board In June dropped the bus program entirely because of the defeat of the 2 miU Issue in the regular June 13 school election.

Under the single run program, elementary and high school students would be transported on the same runs to their Individual schools. Last school year the

students were transported on aeparate buses.

Superintendent William Penny said starting times for claaaes for the 19«S44 year have been aet at 8:20 a m for Junior and senior high school students and 1:30 a.m. for elementary studen-ts to help in the transpor-tation situation.

Penny said the bus program could be started by Sept 19 If the financing issue Is approved, meaning students will be without bus service for the first three weeks of the new school year

even with the approval As part of the cutback, the

board approved Issuing layoff notices to the district's eight regular bus drivers, ef-fective Aug. 31.

In other business, the board directed Penny to proceed with summer property tax collections beginning in July 1964. Un-der the program half of the district's taxes would be collected in the summer, with the balance due at the end of the year.

The circuit Breaker Tax p iw was discussed as it af-fects the community. A law does exist which protects in-dividuals f rom excessive taxes. This is commonly called the Circuit Breaker. All reputable tax people will be able to apply this to in-dividual tax returns.

The cost per family of transporting children one mile to school for 181 days

(22c a mile) estimates to be about $79.00 per year.

A chart was produced by one member which graphically demonstrated that Watervliet expends less mone> per child than any other district in the county.

The next meeting of the Youth Education Supporters

Group will be held Wed-nesday Aug. 17, at 7:00 p j n . in the high school auditorium. Those in-terested in supporting Watervliet education are in-vited to attend.
