I am delighted to be chairing the Foundation Board which is committed to improving access to a Brentwood School education for the many bright and talented pupils whose parents cannot afford to send them to the School. Like many of us, I came to Brentwood School through the Direct Grant scheme which meant that I had a free place. I will always be grateful to the School for everything it gave me and I know that any successes I have had in my life have, in large part, been due to Brentwood and the education I received there. If you, like me, feel the desire to repay some of what we gained, then please do join the Foundation in developing scholarships for the many talented young people we need.

- Lord Patrick Carter of Coles (OB)

The Brentwood School Foundation

Our mission statement

The mission of the Foundation is to enrich and benefit the School by ensuring that no successful applicant in the Brentwood School Entrance Examination is prevented by financial reasons from taking up a place.

Our aim

The aim of the Foundation is to raise sufficient money to provide additional bursaries and facilities, to achieve our mission and ensure that a Brentwood School education is available to those children who might benefit but whose families do not have the financial means to fund it.

Progress so far

Generous donations from Old Brentwoods, parents and friends of the School enable the School to provide valuable bursaries and scholarships to as many as 20% of our current pupils. The results have been, and continue to be, both astounding and rewarding; but we want to do more. Each year we have to turn away talented children who would benefit from the education offered by Brentwood School. This is not only a lost opportunity for them, but also for the School.

In the last financial year, this amazing generosity raised just over £200,000, but we need much more to fulfil our aims.

We will be running a series of events in support of the Foundation with a view to increasing the funds available to help pupils. We hope to see you at one soon.

How are funds held and spent?

Monies raised by the Foundation are held in a Lodged Fund within Brentwood School’s accounts. The authority to spend this money on bursaries and on grants to specific projects rests solely with the Trustees of Brentwood School.

In making a decision on how much to spend each year, the Trustees of Brentwood School will seek recommendations from the Chairman of the Foundation, Lord Carter of Coles (OB).

How you can help

We ask you to consider making either a single donation or an ongoing monthly gift; details of options are on page 7.

Your support will help us provide financial assistance to enable talented and gifted pupils to come to, or remain at, Brentwood through means-tested bursaries.

What our Bursary students have to say

When I was awarded a bursary for Brentwood School I was delighted and knew that this opportunity would be life changing for me. It has enhanced my confidence in myself and in my abilities, and has enabled me to try new things and provides countless opportunities other schools simply do not. I appreciate that a place at Brentwood School allows the best start possible to young adult life. I have enjoyed every minute of my time at the School so far and I cannot wait for the adventures awaiting me.

- Third Year Bursary pupil

“ “The Brentwood School Foundation was literally life-changing for me. Without Brentwood School, I don’t think that I would be where I am today or be the person that I am today. I have become a life-long learner and sportsperson and cannot thank Brentwood School enough for all of the opportunities it provided and continues to provide.

- Bursary student, class of 2015

The bursary I receive from Brentwood School is fantastic. It has given me the opportunity to receive one of the best educations in the country; which I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to obtain. I’m so grateful for the support and opportunities that Brentwood School and the bursary programme have given me. I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive School.

Legacies

A gift in your will can be a simple and tax-efficient way of making a significant donation to the Foundation that is unaffordable during one’s lifetime. Any such gift to a registered charity (of which the School is one) made in your will is exempt from Inheritance Tax and allows many people to make a meaningful contribution to future generations of Brentwood pupils. Making a bequest is simple: it can be included in a new will or added as a Codicil to an existing will.

Please visit our website for more information or for an informal discussion please contact the Development Office; however, you should seek legal advice when making or amending a will.

You may also find useful information at www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax

““ I spent seven fantastic years at Brentwood School and the opportunities my education afforded me really did shape my future. It is so important to give that opportunity to future generations, which is why I am supporting the Foundation in my will.

- Old Brentwood Legator

All businesses can get tax relief when donating to UK charities. However the relief is different for Limited companies, partnerships and sole traders.

Regular Donations – may be made in these ways:• Set up a standing order using your mobile banking facility• Complete our Standing Order form and send it to us. We will then

Gift Aid –

Donor story

““ It is only probably in retrospect that you realise how important your education was for you, giving knowledge and confidence to develop your own abilities and deal with people. It also created lasting friendships and respect for past and current generations. It is for these reasons that I have supported the Foundation initiative to return the benefits that I received.
