The web interface is divided into the following areas:

1. Menu bar

2. Work area

The menu bar enables you to choose the tasks that you want to perform in DPS1000 Series. In addition to the menus, the following buttons are available:

• — Located on the left side of the menu bar, this button enables you to display tips for each page of the web interface.

• — Located on the right side of the menu bar, this button enables you to display notifications below the button when they are generated. Notifications include if a reboot is required and the number of errors or critical system messages that appear at the top of the Home page.

The work area changes as you select options from the menu bar.

The following sections describe how to use the web interface more efficiently to view initiator and tape data.

Sorting

You can sort the columns in a table if is displayed as you move the cursor over the column heading. For example, you may want to sort the Manage VTLs page to list the initiators that are connected.

To sort a table, click the heading of the column to sort the table by that property. An arrow is displayed in the column heading and points in the direction of the sort.

The first time you click a column heading, the rows are sorted as follows:• Numbers or strings: From 0-n or a-Z (low to high)• Errors codes: From high to low (n-0) • Dates: From newest to oldest

If you click a column heading again, it is sorted in the opposite order.

Paging

When multiple pages of data are available, the web interface provides page links and a drop-down list of pages. Use these to page through the data. You can also click the right-arrow button (>>) to move forward through the pages. Click the left-arrow button (<<) to move back. Or, select a page to display from the drop-down list.

Administration

DPS1000 Series enables initiators to back up data to virtual tapes that can then be exported to physical tapes if necessary. The backup process to DPS1000 Series is as follows:

1. An iSCSI client initiator backs up data to its tape library (DPS1000 Series) using a backup utility. DPS1000 Series uses access controls to prevent sharing issues between initiators.

2. DPS1000 Series creates a virtual tape library for the initiator, if one does not already exist. DPS1000 Series compresses the backup data and saves it on virtual tapes on the DPS1000 Series appliance. If the DPS Expansion Module array is connected to the appliance, DPS1000 Series stores virtual tapes on it as well.

Initiators use a backup application to retrieve data stored on DPS1000 Series.

If a physical tape device is installed and enabled, you can export data to physical tape for disaster recovery or to free space on the disks. (See Exporting virtual tapes.) In addition, you can schedule exports to run regularly. (See Scheduling export jobs.)

Managing initiators

Initiators are desktop systems, laptops, workstations, and backup servers that are enabled for iSCSI. They each use DPS1000 Series as a private tape library. DPS1000 Series then creates a virtual tape library for each initiator. (See Managing virtual tape libraries.) Each tape library supports up to eight virtual tape drives. If the DPS1100 is deployed, up to 32 virtual tape drives can be connected to DPS1000 Series simultaneously. If the DPS1200 is deployed, up to 64 virtual tape drives can be connected simultaneously. (All virtual tape drives assigned to a connected virtual tape library count towards the limit, whether or not the individual drives are connected.)

An initiator must be configured before it can back up data to DPS1000 Series. For more information, refer to the initiator chapters of the DPS1000 Series Installation Guide. To access this guide, select About DPS1000 Series on the Help/Support menu and then click the link in the Product Documentation area.

Managing certificates

DPS1000 Series uses X.509 certificates Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) communication between the user’s browser and the DPS1000 Series web server. When DPS1000 Series initially starts up, it automatically generates a self-signed certificate. If you decide not to use a certificate approved by a Certificate Authority, no further action is required.

Note If you use a self-signed certificate for SSL, your browser may display a certificate warning when you access DPS1000 Series. To prevent this warning, use a certificate signed by a Certificate Authority.

Securing your data with a certificate approved through a Certificate Authority involves the following steps:

1. Creating self-signed certificates

2. Generating CSRs (Certificate Signing Requests)

3. Importing certificate replies

Before you begin this process, familiarize yourself with the Certificate Authority that will sign your certificate and its processes for signing certificates.

Managing export and import carts

If a physical tape device is installed and enabled, you can export virtual tapes to physical tapes. This enables you to back up the data for disaster recovery purposes or to free space. You must import virtual tapes from physical tape into the virtual tape library in order to work with them. You can schedule exports to run regularly using export jobs. (See Scheduling exports.)

The Manage Export/Import Carts page, which is available from the Security menu, lists the contents of the export and import carts, along with progress bars to show the status of the current export or import.

The export progress bar shows the following:• The total length of the bar represents the total amount of space on a physical tape.• The blue bar fills up the gray area as the export progresses.

Note When the amount of data being exported is small, it may be difficult to distinguish between the amount of data to be exported and the progress. Also, if the data in the export job cannot fit on a single physical tape, the progress bar resets after each physical tape is filled.

The import progress bar shows the following:• A light gray bar represents the total amount of data to be imported. • The blue bars fills up the gray area as the import progresses.

The amount of data to be read is the total amount of data on the entire physical tape. It is possible that the entire tape must be read if multiple virtual tapes are stored on it but not all are being imported.

Exporting virtual tapes

During an export, DPS1000 Series writes virtual tapes to the beginning of a physical tape, regardless of whether there is data already on the physical tape.

Requires the Storage Administrator role

To export a virtual tape

1. Verify that the physical tape device is enabled. (See Enabling the physical library.)

2. Add virtual tapes to the export cart. (See Adding virtual tapes to the export cart.)

3. Start the export from one of the following pages:

The Manage Export/Import Carts page:a. On the Security menu, select Manage Export/Import Carts.b. Click Start Export.

The Manage Virtual Tape Library page:a. On the Administration menu, select Manage VTLs.

b. In the Initiators table, click next to the initiator associated with the virtual tape library.

c. Click Start Export.

4. DPS1000 Series displays a message about the number of tapes required for this export.

If you have enough tapes in a physical tape device, click OK.

If you do not have enough tapes in a physical tape device, add tapes. Then, on the dialog box that instructs you to insert a tape, click OK.

Because it takes DPS1000 Series several minutes to prepare the virtual tapes for export, DPS1000 Series does not immediately move tapes in the physical tape library. In addition to this preparation time, it may take several minutes to load and unload the physical tape.

It may take several hours to export a full tape when the initiator is not reading from or writing to the virtual tape library.

DPS1000 Series displays a confirmation message when the export is complete.

The Exports report lists information about the exports performed from this DPS1000 Series. (See Viewing the Exports report.)

Managing users

To access DPS1000 Series, you must have a user account with one or more roles. Each role defines the tasks that you can perform in the web interface. You are restricted to the parts of the web interface associated with your roles. This provides a necessary layer of security that prevents a user from bypassing the security that the product is designed to provide.

The following roles are available in DPS1000 Series:• Appliance Administrator — Enables users such as system and network administrators to

configure and administer DPS1000 Series• Storage Administrator — Enables users such as security personnel to manage virtual and

physical tapes, certificates, and user accounts

You can configure user accounts so that users must change their passwords every 90 days. In addition, you can configure accounts so that if a user does not log in to the web interface after 90 days, DPS1000 Series removes the inactive user account automatically. If SMTP is configured, seven days before a password or account is set to expire, DPS1000 Series sends an email to the email address associated with the account.

Default accounts

The following default DPS1000 Series user accounts are provided:• The admin account is assigned the Appliance Administrator role. • The str_admin account is assigned the Storage Administrator role.

To access this guide, select About DPS1000 Series on the Help/Support menu and then click the link in the Product Documentation area.

Jumbo frames are Ethernet frames that can carry a higher payload than other frames and may enable better performance. Jumbo frames are not available in all environments; however, if your network topology (including initiators, switches, and so on) supports them, you should enable jumbo frames during deployment. In DPS1000 Series, jumbo frames can be enabled for the iSCSI port(s), but not for the management port.

Note Only one iSCSI port is supported for the DPS1100.
