During her childhood, Helen Jackson

endured unspeakable cruelty and

abuse. Sounds terrible, doesn’t it? But not hear Helen tell it. Helen

can tell about some horrific event in her life then smile and laugh

that wonderful laugh of hers and say, “but that’s the past, and God

is so good.”

Helen tells of being seven years old and lying on the porch while

listening to the singing coming from the Lee Street congregation.

It was a comfort to her and an escape from the physical and

emotional abuse she knew too well. This was her first introduction

to the Church of Christ.

As an adult, Helen was still in abusive relationships. She felt no one

could really love her. In 1973, Don Mitchell came to Helen’s door

and invited her to study the Bible. Later, Mary Dean, and then Alta

Plemmons, came into Helen’s life. These women loved her and

continued to study with her.

In 1975, Helen decided to obey the gospel. She was baptized and

said that when she came up out of the water, “It was an experience

like no other. I was free, free, free!”

Helen can talk about her painful past yet still laugh about it because

of prayer. “I have had a hard life, but as long as I pray, I know my

God hears me. I can put the past behind me. What I know is I don’t

have a penny, but I am rich. God is good.” This echoed in Helen’s

favorite verse:

The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares

for those who trust in Him. Nahum 1:7

“I have peace, and I can laugh because God is so good. People

have used me all my life, but now God uses me. I found the love I

was looking for. God is so good.”
