Game Types

Regular Game TypesThe Main Menu screen allows you to choose the type of game you would like to play. There are several game types.

» Classic » Novice » Expert » Extreme

The differences between the game types are illustrated in the table below.

Classic Novice Expert ExtremeMaximum of eight waves of invaders

Ship “snaps” to column ✓ ✓

Invaders speed up with each new wave

✓ ✓ ✓

Random invaders drop at high speed

✓ ✓ ✓

“Extra Points” invaders move across the top

✓ ✓

Ship can also move up and down

Invaders have moving target ✓

To play a certain game type, simply choose a starting speed and click the respective button. A starting speed of 1 is the slowest, while 10 is the highest.

The Ultimate ChallengeThe Ultimate Challenge provides “a level playing field” for competitive play and is useful as a progress indicator for individual players.

Each Ultimate Challenge level uses the Novice game settings (see above) with a starting speed of 4 and the content set to All Topics for the relevant level. With Novice game settings, players focus more on answering questions and less on hand-eye coordination. This provides meaningful high scores when assessing individual player’s progress, and comparable results for many players.

Note: You can also view information on each of the game types by clicking the About Game Modes button on the How To Play window.

Tip: Watch out! The maximum start speed is 10 not the maximum speed. This means that if your start the first wave on speed 10, the second wave will be on speed 11, the third on speed 12, and so on.

Understanding High ScoresMost types of high scores provide a ranking from 1 to 10, with 1 being the highest score, 2 being the second highest score and so on. This is not the case with the Ultimate Challenge high scores, which look slightly different to the other types of high scores and may be confusing for first time users.

Ultimate Challenge high scores do not provide a ranking, but rather display the single highest score for each level.

Warning: Because Ultimate Maths Invaders shares user data with Integrated User Lists (IULs), deleting a user in Ultimate Maths Invaders will also delete that user in the other installed titles that use IULs!

UMI V2 Manual - Administration Page 47

Using ClassesThe “classes” feature of Ultimate Maths Invaders is designed for teachers. Using multiple classes provides many benefits and allows users to quickly find their name rather than sorting through a long list.

Creating, Renaming and Deleting ClassesTo create a new class, simply click the Create Class menu item from the Class menu. You can rename a class by selecting the class and clicking the Change Class Name... menu item from the Class menu.

To delete classes, click the Delete Classes menu item from the Class menu. While you can rename the default class, you cannot delete it.

Removing Users from a ClassUsers can belong to multiple classes. You can remove a user from the currently selected class by clicking the Remove User menu item from the User menu. You can remove multiple users from a class at the same time.

Placing Users in a ClassIf only a single class exists, each user that is created – either from the Log In screen or from within the Teacher Options screen – will be placed in this class. If there is more than one class, the new user will be placed in the class that is active when the user is created.

To add one or more existing users to the currently selected class, click the Add existing users to current class... menu item from the Class menu. Select the users you want to add to the current class and click the Add to Class button.

Like the other EdAlive v2 applications that use Integrated User Lists (IULs), Ultimate Maths Invaders allows you to have a single user in multiple classes, allowing that user to have different content settings for each class.

For more information, see “Appendix E Integrated User Lists” on page 68.

Class Log In SettingsThe Teacher Options screen also allows you to change the class log in settings, such as whether students can create new users from the Log In screen, or

Note: When you delete a class, users belonging to that class are not deleted.

Note: Removing a user from a class is not the same as deleting a user. To delete a user, see “Deleting Users” on page 46.

whether users are required to enter a class password in addition to (or instead of) their individual password.

To change these settings, select the Change Class Properties... menu item from the Class menu.

User StatisticsUser statistics provide information on an individual user’s progress. Ultimate Maths Invaders provides very detailed, powerful statistics as well as various options for viewing them.

To learn more about statistics, see “User Statistics” on page 50.

Importing UsersThe Teacher Options screen allows you to create multiple users simultaneously by importing a list of users. This can be done from either a tab- or comma-separated text file. The current format of the file is:

first name,last name

or

first name <TAB> last name

Example lists are below:

John,Brown Jenny,Smith

or

John <TAB> Brown Jenny <TAB> Smith

To import a list of users, select the Import Users menu item from the Global menu. A window will appear, allowing you to choose an appropriate file. Imported users are not automatically placed in a class, so you will have to manually place these users in a class.

For more information, see “Placing Users in a Class” on page 47.

User and Class LimitationsWhile Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 provides many advanced features for managing users and classes, there is a limit to the number of users and

Tip: If you have a class list in Excel format, you may be able to save time by modifying it, saving it as a .csv file and importing the entire list of users in one step.

UMI V2 Manual - Administration Page 49

classes supported. The maximum number of users is 2048 and the maximum number of classes is 64. You can have a maximum of 64 users in a class. Note that it is not possible to have 64 groups of 64 unique users, as this exceeds the user maximum (i.e., 642 = 4096 which is greater than 2048).

The number of users within Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 does not depend on the number of computers on which Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 is installed. For example, if your licence allows you to install Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 on 25 computers, you may still create as many users as the limit (and your licence) allow.

You can view the limitations as well of the number of users and classes used, by clicking the View Database Statistics item in the Global pop-up menu.

Note: You must not install Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 on more computers than your licence allows.

User Statistics

IntroductionUser statistics provide information on an individual user’s progress. Ultimate Maths Invaders provides very detailed, powerful statistics as well as various options for viewing them.

Just as the content is divided into two broad categories, so are the statistics. The two categories are all topics and times tables. You can view both an overview and the details of each of these types of statistics. The way in which you view these statistics varies depending on which edition of Ultimate Maths Invaders you are using.

Viewing User Statistics

The User Options WindowRegardless of which edition of Ultimate Maths Invaders you are using, you are able to view your statistics from the User Options window.

To learn how to view statistics from the User Options window, see “The User Options Window” on page 20.

The Choose Your Content ScreenThe Choose Your Content screen is another area in which you can view an overview of your statistics. This overview is available when selecting either times tables or topical content in the basic mode.

How the Graphs WorkThe small bar graphs represent the details of a user’s statistics. Each vertical bar represents the percentage of questions answered correctly from a limited set of questions. For multiplications tables and all topics content, the limited set for each bar is 200 questions. For the individual squares of the topical content, the limited set for each bar is 20 questions.

For example, if a student, John, were to answer twenty Addition & Subtraction questions with 15 correct and 5 incorrect, the bar would be three-quarters full showing a 75% correct rating.

More bars are added as more sets of questions are answered, with the right-most bar being the most recent. Continuing the previous example, if John were to answer a further twenty questions, all correctly, another bar would be added to the graph, this time showing a 100% correct rating.

UMI V2 Manual - Networking Page 59

NetworkingThe Network edition of Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 provides all the features of the School edition, with added network functionality. User data is saved in a central location, thus allowing users to log in from any network computer on which Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 is installed.

How Networking WorksNetworking with Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 works using a client/server model, where the server application (i.e., the EdAlive Server) is installed on a single network computer (typically your school’s dedicated network server) and the client application (i.e., Ultimate Maths Invaders) is installed on each of the other client computers (e.g., the “workstation” computers usually located in classrooms and computer labs).

This has huge benefits for network administrators, teachers and kids. For example, a student, Taylor, can be working on her times tables during free time in her regular classroom. Then, during time in the computer lab, Taylor can log into her own user profile and continue where she left off, even though she is on a different computer.

Tip: Tip: Because user data is stored on the one central computer, network administrators can easily back up this data when performing computer maintenance.

UMI V2 Manual - Networking Page 60

Because Ultimate Maths Invaders shares user data with Integrated User Lists, this is even more beneficial. For example, a teacher may import a list of users based on a CSV file. As soon as this information has been imported, the newly created user accounts will be available in all the other relevant v2 titles. See “Appendix E Integrated User Lists” on page 68.

Networking RequirementsBoth the client and server installations have to be on the same subnet (this usually means that the IP addresses of the network computers must only vary in the last of the four numbers).

For example, assuming the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, only computers A and B in the image below will be able to access the EdAlive Server, because computer C is not “inside” the same subnet. However, if the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0, all the computers will be able to access the EdAlive Server.

Note: Note: If your school has multiple subnets, you may still be able to use the EdAlive Server as long as each of these subnets can connect to the one server computer. As an alternative to this, you could install the EdAlive Server application on the server computer in each subnet.

UMI V2 Manual - Networking Page 61

Note that Ultimate Maths Invaders is not designed to have a single copy of the client program installed to a network storage device and have all the network computers run this single copy over the network. It is vital for each (client) network computer to have its own copy of Ultimate Maths Invaders installed. The installation of the software onto each client computer can be made more efficient on Windows systems by using the MSIs (Microsoft Installers) provided by EdAlive.

Automatic ConnectivityThe Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 client application can scan the subnet in an attempt to automatically connect to the EdAlive Server. However it is best to manually configure, or “force”, a connection to the server’s IP address.

There is a provision for entering the IP address in the installers on Windows systems. However, because the network settings are stored in a plain text file (called “system.ini” in the “Profiles” directory), you can simply modify this file with a text editor (such as TextEdit or Notepad) to change the network settings. In the example below, Ultimate Maths Invaders will try to connect to 192.168.1.254 on port 2545. If ForcePort is left as 0, the default port, 1626, will be used.

UMI V2 Manual - Networking Page 62

More information about networking EdAlive products can be found on the EdAlive web site.

Student Use of Network EditionWhen the Network edition of Ultimate Maths Invaders is run, it uses the settings in the system.ini file to determine how to connect to the EdAlive Server. If an IP address is set, Ultimate Maths Invaders will try to connect to the EdAlive Server at the specified address.

If no IP address is set, or if the IP address that is set fails to connect, users can either click the Scan Network button to let the program search for the server, or, if they know the server’s IP address, they can click the Connect to IP button to make a direct connection without searching.

We recommend that you set the IP address in the system.ini file so that Ultimate Maths Invaders will automatically connect to the server. See “Automatic Connectivity” on page 61 for details on forcing the IP address.

UMI V2 Manual - Appendices Page 65

Appendix C Network Deployment / InstallationUltimate Maths Invaders comes with a new installation system for both Windows and Macintosh in order to ease the workload of school network administrators wishing to deploy it to multiple computers on their network. Note that you must not intall the software on more computers than your licence allows.

To install to multiple networked Macintosh computers, use the Package installers with Apple Remote Desktop. To install to multiple networked Windows computers, use the MSI (Microsoft InStaller package) along with Group Policy.

When installing the Network edition on standalone Windows computers, you have the option of specifying the IP address of the computer on which the EdAlive Server application is running, as well as the port number on which the EdAlive Server application will be listening. However, these properties cannot usually be specified when deploying the MSI over networked Windows computers using Group Policy. In order to specify the IP address and port settings, you must manually copy the system configuration file (called system.ini in the Profiles directory) or modify the MSI installer using an MSI modification tool, such as Microsoft’s Orca.

Copying the system configuration file to each client computer needs no explanation, but can be an ineffective method if you are installing the Network edition on a large number of client computers. By using an MSI modification tool, such as Microsoft’s Orca, you can modify the MSI so that you do not need to manually copy the system configuration file. To modify the MSI, follow the steps below.

Modifying the MSI with Orca1 Download and Install Orca.

Download and install Orca. Orca is only available in the Windows SDK Components for Windows Installer Developers. At the time of writing, Microsoft allows users to download and install this free of charge.

2 Run Orca and Copy and Open the MSI.Open the Start menu and click the Orca menu item. Once Orca is running, copy the MSI to your desktop, open the File menu, click the Open menu item and choose the MSI.

Note: EdAlive does not provide technical support for the usage of MSIs, Orca, Group Policy or Active Directory. Contact Microsoft for technical support (http://support.microsoft.com/).

UMI V2 Manual - Appendices Page 66

3 Change the IP Address and Port Properties Once the MSI file is open, you will see a list of tables in the frame on the left. When you click a table, you will see a list of records displayed in the frame on the right. Each record will have values separated into columns. Click the “Property” table. For the record where the “Property” columns is “EA_IPADDRESS”, change the “Value” column to the IP address of the computer on which the EdAlive Server application will be running. For the record where the “Property” column is “EA_PORT”, change the “Value” column to the port on which the EdAlive Server application will be listening.

4 Save the MSI5 Install the MSI

You can now install the software on multiple networked computers via Group Policy and Active Directory. This installation will use the IP address and port settings you specified, meaning that you do not have to manually copy the system configuration file to each client computer.

Windows Vista and Windows 7

C:\ProgramData\EdAlive\v2 Combo\

UMI V2 Manual - Appendices Page 68

Appendix E Integrated User ListsSeveral EdAlive products use IULs or Integrated User Lists. IULs are lists of users and classes that can be used in more than one EdAlive product.

For example, if a teacher creates a class in Ultimate Maths Invaders and adds multiple users to the class, this information is stored in an IUL. Then when the teacher runs a second EdAlive title that uses IULs (for example, BRAINtastic! v2), the class and user information saved in Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 will automatically be available.

EdAlive programs that share user data with IULs include:

» BRAINtastic! v2 » Numbers Up - Volcanic Panic! v2 » Numbers Up - Baggin’ the Dragon v2 » Typing Tournament v2 » Ultimate Maths Invaders v2 » Words Rock! v2
