Tisha’s Market Update

My Perspective......

Here are some interesting facts about the difference in our market comparing the first 10 days of March this year and last.

March 1-10, 2012  Total sales 638.  Total sales at or above list price was 65 which is 10.1% of total sales.

March 1-10, 2013  Total sales 661.  Total sales at or above list price was 116 which is 17.5% of total sales.

Certainly indicating an improved market for sellers this year.

Happy Spring!Ramsay Inspiration SeriesOn March 9th we had our second event of the series, a viewing of the Us Now documentary. Thank you to everyone that came out, we even had a Mackenzie Town resident join us. She walked away inspired and a fan of Ramsay!

We are very excited to invite you to the third Ramsay Inspiration event. Calgary’s own sustainability expert, Chris Turner, will be speaking about sustainable neighbourhoods and helping us understand what that means, what it looks like and how we can get there ourselves. Please come and join us for what promises to be a very special evening April 13th 6:00-9:00pm in the upper hall. We will have snacks, beverages and great conversation for everyone. Please go to ramsaycalgary.eventbrite.ca to book your tickets.HallThe hall committee has just signed up Nickie Brockhoff as a consultant to assist the committee in developing policy and procedures, internal communication strategies and mainte-nance schedules for the hall and rink facilities. Nickie will be working with key committee chairs to assist in the develop-ment of these strategies in the coming months and we are really looking forward to the outcomes of this engagement. We will keep you informed on progress.

The Ramsay Community Garden is celebrating its fourth gardening season this year. We have 24 plots available for rent. Small plots are $20 and large plots are $40. There are still plots available for this season if you are keen. We are a group of friendly Ramsay people who are passionate about growing our own food. We also like gardeners to help out at the garden a minimum of 8 hours a year. There are always plenty of things to do such as watering, weeding, raking mulch, moving soil, turning composters, and more.

There is a large tree and rose garden that needs caring for so, if you enjoy pruning trees and bushes you are welcome to come to the garden any time and trim away.

Please contact Carol Engstrom at [email protected] if you are interested.

“Century Homes” is back, July 26th-August 5th, 2013, and Ramsay, we’re doing it again! Last year, residents signed up, and were then guided and provided with opportunities to attend free workshops that assisted them in researching their heritage homes. If you have already researched your home, “Historic Calgary Week” is the time to share your stories… where we will post the information on provided signs for your front yard during the week. If you have not researched your home, but would like to learn more… this is a great chance to explore, learn and share. Registration is now open through July. To register your home visit www.century-homes.org. The website is filled with the tips and resources you need to begin researching your home. You may also get a copy of these resources by sending an e-mail to [email protected], or phoning 403-909-6479.

Inglewood is having a “Haunted & Historical, Hose & Hound Happening” featuring Historian: Harry Sanders and Medium: Tanya Blaney. Harry Sanders became Calgary’s first “Historian Laureate” last year, when he won the award from Calgary’s Heritage Authority, so it’s a great opportu-nity to meet him and listen to him discuss some history of Inglewood, as well as Ramsay. Tickets are limited and avail-able now, at the pub… and include 1 free pint ;) The event is on April 25th, 2013, at 7:30pm, at the Hose and Hound.

Happy April to the fantastic and energetic community of Ramsay. This spring is going to be an exciting one in Ramsay as we continue to engage and work for improvements regarding noise issues at Alyth Yard. As you may be aware, City Council has decided to step up to the plate and fully fund a proper noise study at Alyth Yard. We are disappointed that the CPR has taken a pass on partnering with us on this particular component of study but we understand that their pass is due to pressures being exerted on them by Inglewood’s Train Gang. The Train Gang, are a group of wickedly devoted Inglewood residents who have been exercising their democratic rights and have been engaging with the Federal Transportation Commission - the only body in Canada responsible for oversight of the CPR’s operations. My mission, as your City Councillor, is to continue to improve the City’s sometimes difficult relationship with our historic neigh-bour. Your CA’s development chair, Jenny Jensen, has expressed interest in being a part of the Train Gang. The Gang welcomes a member from Ramsay and I will work with your CA President Kevin to make this happen in short order.

The second item I want to address in this report is Transit Oriented Development. I’ve actually just come from a meeting with representatives of the City’s Planning, Transportation, and Real Estate (Office of Land Servicing and Housing) departments where I introduced them to the consultant I’ve hired to under-take an analysis of the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) potential along Calgary’s next three major transit corridors: the North-Central; the Southeast; and the Central East. Amongst my colleagues on Council, I am in the unique position of represent-ing communities along all three lines, and so, more than anyone, I need to make sure that our decisions regarding the timing and funding of these lines are objectively based on the right criteria. Additionally, as a passionate urbanist with a community-activist

past, I am committed to ensuring that the stations of all three lines are deeply integrated into their surrounding neighbourhoods in a way that Calgary, to date, has yet to get exactly right.

The technical planning term for a deep integration between transit and the neighbourhoods it serves is Transit Oriented Development (TOD). Getting TOD right in Ramsay with the arrival of the SETWAY is a major reason behind all of the visioning work that your CA has been undertaking over the last couple years. So, in addition to providing a scope of under-standing for how much TOD potential exists along the three lines, the other major intent of the project is to provide Ramsay with a visual discussion starter surrounding the question of how TOD could and should transform the community and its relationship with the communities along the line. I’m pleased that some of the funding for this report is coming from the Council’s Community Events Fund (formerly the Community Initiative Fund) that the Ramsay CA successfully applied for in collaboration with several other Ward 9 CAs. The report must be completed by the end of May (after which time we enter the campaign red-zone and I won’t be able to develop materials like that with tax-payer funding) and I look forward to sharing it in draft form with Ramsay at your May meeting. Hopefully by that time, we’ll have a clearer understanding of the program for and timelines surrounding the City’s commitment to undertake TOD planning in Ramsay in 2013.

I’m looking forward to spending my off-duty hours this spring, summer, and fall knocking on your doors and asking for your continued support in this October’s Municipal Election.

And as always, don’t hesitate to contact your Team Ward 9 if we can be of any service at [email protected] or 403-268-5330.

We have been very busy over the last two months with artist in residency, Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney. A very special thank you to the Ramsay Parent Council and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for their generous support that has made this learning opportunity possible! Our students would love to tell you a bit about some of their learning adventures…

“My name is Sofie and I LOVED working with Mrs. Giebelhaus-Maloney this year. I liked all the types of hand games we did and the autobiographies of our settlers. Also her piano playing inspired me because I play the piano too! All the songs she taught us were beautiful like sing a picture paint a song and freedom isn’t free. My settler was Sarah “Ailie” Lendrum Brick. She taught us to use hand actions and talk clear and loud. I LOVE Mrs. Giebelhaus-Maloney. She and Mrs. Milligan are the best music teachers ever.” From Sofie, Grade 4

“My name is Edie. I really enjoyed working with my class-mates as we created the best performance ever, The Winter Celebration! It was amazing to see how our brains wrapped around our main idea, Mother Earth! (Which by the way was me!) Then our costumes just fell into place. The performance was a chance to let our imaginations run free! We did so many things in our class like the shadow play, Wetlands theme and the frogs and bogs song! Wow! We sang out heart out! All this love is due to our wonderful staff, teachers and principals. The whole performance was a big bundle of joy, creativity and love! The school worked hard on the performance and it was a bit hit! Good job Ramsay School – “The school with the BIG HEART!” By Edie, Grade 5

LITTLE OLYMPICS SPORTS DAYA community fundraising event in support of the schoolOn June 14th, 2013 at 1:15 PM on the grounds of Calgary’s historic Ramsay School, more than 40 students from the Janus Academy School for children with autism will be joined by family, friends, school staff and supporters - including some of the city’s most admired Olympians and sports figures - as they give their all, participating in a series of fun and interactive sporting events.

In support of their school, the students will be collecting pledges and preparing to bring their ‘A’ game, as excitement builds for the big day. From T-Ball to Relay Races to the always action packed “Belly Kick” ball game, participants and spectators alike will enjoy a great afternoon filled with fun, friends and the camaraderie of team spirit. Helping them make the most of this special event, notable Calgary sports figures will be on hand as our honoured guests, assisting the kids and cheering them on.

The Janus Academy was established in 1997. The school’s mission is to maximize the potential of each child with autism, by enabling their academic success and facilitating lifelong community integration. We have been operating in the Ramsay School for more than a decade. So mark your calendars and come out to cheer on our athletes, meet our special guests and support the cause. Trespasser’s EyeNancy JanovicekWhen I visited Andrew Tarrant in his Ramsay studio, I asked him why he became a potter. He laughed and replied, “I’m still not sure about that!”

Andrew threw his first pot when he was in high school, but was drawn to metalwork because his art teacher, Robert Moore, was a silversmith. Moore recog-nized Andrew’s talent and encouraged him to go to art school. He entered the Alberta College of Art as a jewellery major and transferred to the ceramics program when the instructor of his pottery elective noticed that he was “ceramics-oriented.” He recalls that, at the time, he was less comfortable throwing clay than working with metal but he enjoyed the challenge. Metal did not leave his system, though. His friend, metal scupltor Jeff de Boer, teases him that his clay looks like metal.

Andrew’s unique style reflects his interest in history, mythology, and steampunk. His pots are decorated with sprigs, decorative press-molded pieces that are attached to the vessel before it’s fired. His parents’ Wedgewood Jasperware (where they keep a piece of their wedding-cake) inspired him to develop this technique. He learned how to create the molds in art school and has created over four-hundred sprigs during his twenty-year career. You can see some of his favourite sprigs on his website: www.trespasser.ca. He has two distinct but complementary styles. One draws on art history, legend, and literature and is decorated with sprigs that evoke medieval history, celtic goddesses, and mytho-logical demons. His steampunk designs draw on classic science fiction and retro-futurism. But this work goes beyond simply slapping on gears as decorative embellishment. The spouts of these teapots have rivets, and the knobs of the lids look like gears sticking out of the top of the piece. Form meets function.

Andrew has a deep respect for the history of his craft. He keeps a 2,000 year-old clay bowl in his studio for inspiration. “Art is the marker of a civilization,” Andrew explained, “and pottery lasts longer than anything else.” Archeologists rely on shards of pottery to date their digs. And he has devised a clever prank for future archeologists. When his friends travel, he gives them two bowls: one to keep and one to bury. He smiled when he wondered what people in the future might theorize about this prolific and well-travelled potter.

Like most artists, Andrew teaches. He is a pottery instruc-tor in ACAD’s extension department and offers classes at the Jewish Community Centre. He has also taught at In-Definite Arts, a non-profit arts centre for artists with developmental disabilities. His other business venture is www.cool-toys.ca,

an on-line toy and collectible store for that he runs with his son. Look for him at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo.

Five years ago, Andrew was diagnozed with Keratoconus, a degenerative eye con-diton that causes structural change to the cornea. Recently, researchers have realized that it’s a genetic conditition. Andrew joked that it’s difficult to track in his fam-ily because his grandfather and father “f***ed-up their eyes before they had kids.” His grandfather worked in a glass factory, and lost his left eye when a plate of glass

shattered in front of him. His glass eye was made in the same factory where he worked. His father’s left eye was damaged as a boy during a game of “Cowboys and Indians.” His brother

shot him in the left eye with a suckerdart, which damaged his vision. The condition is most acute in Andrew’s left eye, which is functionally blind. The damage to the cornea loosens it, and his vision can change from blink to blink. Most days, he’s still able to work, but his production has slowed down significantly. He used to make twenty-five mugs a day. Now he’s only able to produce twenty-five mugs in a week. Some days he is not able to focus at all; other days he must sit in the dark.

Keratoconus can be corrected, but the surgery is $4,000.00 for one eye. When he is healing from the surgery, Andrew will need to replace his prescription every three months, which will cost an additional $6,000.00. This is not covered by health insurance. For the past few years, Andrew has been trying to save enough money for the procedure, but the recession has been hard on

artists. He’s devised a business plan to raise money for the surgery. He created an Indiegogo campaign (Help an Artist Keep his Eyesight) that is based on an art gallery’s business model. When he sells his work to a gallery, the owner earns 50 per cent of the value of the piece. Andrew has created original pieces that are only available on Indiegogo and is selling them at gallery prices. When he started the campaign in January, his goal was to raise enough money to fix one eye and to pay his bills while he recovers. He’s overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. A month into the campaign he had raised enough money for the surgery on one eye, and has decided to continue fundraising so that he can correct both eyes at the same time. The campaign ends April 29th, and he’s close to his goal. If you’re interested, you’ll find more information here: www.indiegogo.com (type in the keyword “Andrew Tarrant”).

He’s hoping to schedule the eye surgery in the summer so that he’ll be back in the classroom in September. Until then, you’ll find him in his 23rd-Avenue studio filling orders.

Hi everybody!Sometimes it all seems like the song that never

ends. We go on and on, my friend. The Otters and Explorers went to camp. The local Fort Calgary Lions club made a donation to our cause. It would be tough sledding without them. We went to a camp in Cremona which has been built and maintained by the Lions. Remember the snow storm? Yes that was our weekend at camp. Saturday was great with lots of activity including a zip line and a neat hobby horse, complements of Terry Petersen and Cor Koster. The camp fire was a roaring success thanks to the Explorers who ran the show. Can anyone say maturity? Yes they are growing and taking on responsibility. The trip home was a little nerve racking. Saw my first snow plow when I hit Glenmore trail!! Credit goes to the Otters dads for scoot-ing out of camp fast. They chowed down at breakfast, cleaned up their cabin and were gone in no time. If we had a badge for that they would certainly have got it.

The Explorers have been skiing again with a trip to Ribbon creek and a side trip to the frozen Troll Falls. Our next trip is down goat creek trail from Canmore area to Banff Springs Hotel and of course a soak in the hot springs. By then they will be ready for our overnight trip to Bryant creek shelter in Banff Park. Tell you all about it next issue.

Recreation ReportShannon FoxThank You, Winter Volunteers!

Our incredible Rink Rats kept the ice in and the skaters happy for a successful season. Ramsay rink is run entirely by volunteers. It takes about 200 hours of volunteer time to put the ice in at the start of the season. Then, each flooding session takes about 2 to 4 hours twice per week. Thank you Levi, Jed, Rick, Ryan, Kolja, Ross, Matthew, Dave, Luc, Matt, Donna, Wade, Luke and Allison. You’re amazing people. Thank you for your dedication to the rink and our community.

Kudos to our event volunteers who put on all the Recreation events! Thank you Donna, Carolyn, Melody, Nancy and Hilary for your enthusiasm and for making it all so much fun to take part in! This winter we had great success at the Canteen with our weekly programs and special events.

Thanks to Allan for skate sharpening services, Cyril and Jenny for donating the stove and skating bars, to all those who donated skates, to Carolyn for helping paint the Canteen and so much more, and a spe-cial thank you to Donna B for cooking all that chili, pizza and grilled cheese – you donated many, many hours and it is appreciated by many, many people! Cheers to Allison, Ben and Alison for helping out when we needed you. Your contributions really make a difference.

And a shout out to Iain, Ryan and Dave for the time you’ve contrib-uted and will undoubtedly continue contributing to our rink fundrais-ing efforts. We are committed to improving this awesome facility and keeping it accessible all year round for everyone in Ramsay.Seeking Summer VolunteersIf you want to join our amazing team of volunteers, send us an email at [email protected] Liner Worked WondersThis past fall a group of us installed a giant liner on the rink surface before the ice went in. Because the asphalt surface is in rough shape

we needed the rink liner to keep the water in place during all the win-ter freeze/thaws brought on by Chinooks. While the solution wasn’t without its issues (we were out fixing giant cracks with every dramatic weather shift), the overall effect was a wonderful temporary winter fix.Wee Wednesdays & Pizzapalooza are done for the seasonThanks to all the parents, kids, couples and neighbours who came out to enjoy some skating and meet new friends at the Rink. Ramsay has a lot of terrific people and it was really fun meeting you.Very Chili Fridays continues!Very Chili Fridays continue! We’ve got some really fun and interesting warm-weather activities planned so make sure you come up Fridays at 1:30pm! We’ll keep serving our popular chili and grilled cheese!Summer Programs Coming SoonThe Recreation Committee is putting the finishing touches on our summer programs and the info is coming soon.
