Some 26 southland highschools are represented on this year's squad - three teams of 12 players each picked from among those schools which played in leagues bracketed in the "smallschools", "A" and "AAft divisions ot the C.I.F. playoffs. The Helms Board firstpicked "small schools" all-star teams in football in 1951.

Robert Baiz's Fermin-tasuen Padres placed the most reprGsFntatives onthe three honor teams, with tour players, three of them on the first team. Lasuenwon the "AAtI division playoff's, downing runner-up St. Monica's, 1+0-7. st. Monica'splaced three boys on the honor teams, while Brea-olinda, champion in nA" Divisionplay, also placed three. He ran for over 1,000 yards, ashe did last year as a first team CIF performer, and gained much additional yardagefor his team through the air lanes. Over the past two seasons Ken has been a greatdefensive player also, performing at either the halfback or safety positions. Heintercepted nine tosses this season and 21 throws over the past two years. Whatmakes Ken I s achievements so remarkable this year is the fact that he was involvedin a serious auto accident last year during Christmas vacation, requiring considerable repair work to one of his legs. Ken's coach" Robert Owens" called his acehalfback better than ever this season.

Martin will be presented with his player of the year medal award at the26th annual All-Southem California Board of Football Awards Program to be held atHelms Hall on Saturday moming" January- 19, at 10:30 a.m. Ken will be joined byplayers and their coaches at the annual moming ceremony and luncheon, at whichtime other personalities from the gridiron past will be on hand to pay tribute tothis season's star players.

Southe~ League championship and then advancing through theplayoffs to a final-game victory over Marine-League co-champ

Banning, 35-7. Coach Jim Blewett, coming back into city play thisyear with three players off last year's all-city team, made it 16 LosAngeles City Championships tor Manual Arts over the past 50 years, nine of them with the venerable Blewett at the helm.

And i t was Manual Arts leading the parade when it came timeto select the 1962 All-Los Angeles City grid teams. The Toilers hadfive representatives on the 1962 All-City selections, three on thefirst team. Birmingham, the city's highest .scoring team in leagueplay with 171 points in five games, placed four of its stalwarts, with three of them gaining first team recognition.

"Player ot the year" balloting was spirited during the Helmsfive-hour selection meeting, with San Pe~o tailback, Ronnie Barber, final~y winning the ooveted title. Barber, an All-City ohoice lastyear, led San Pedro to a triple tie for first place in Marine Leagueaction this year and did not have the opportunity to compete in theplayoffs due to a loss of the coin flip. Barber, a single-wing tailback in coach Bill Seixas' versatile Pirate attack, had a 1,16l-yardtotal offense mark over the past season. Ron gained 843 yards runningand completed 50 percent of his passes for an additional 318 yards.Last year, Barber was also named the Marine League's top performerand his two-year statistics show him accounting for 2,508 yards intotal offense and 31 TDs. Of this total, 1,819 yards were gainedrushing. Over a two-year span, Barber accounted for an average of179 yards per game in total offense and a six-yard average running.

Ronnie Barber will reoeive his tlplayer of the year" medalaward at the 26th annual All-Southern California Board of FootballAwards Progrmn to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January19, at 10:30 a.m. At this ttme, all those boys named for All-LosAngeles City Football Team honors will'be presented with framedscroll awards from All-Southern California Board of Football Q

Twenty Los Angeles high schools are represented on thisyear's All-Los Angeles City team. Schools to place more than oneperformer on the honor teams are Manual Arts (5), Birmingham (4).eetwo of them being juniors on the first team, San Pedro, Banning, LosAngeles, Fairfax, Gardena and Lincoln each with two.

Six players on this year's All-City team were picked lastseason also. Manual Arts tackle, Harry Wells, and Ron Barber were1961 first team selections, while two of this year's first-teambackfield -- Clayton Calhoun of Manual and Alex Sotomayor of Garfield-- were second team choices last fall. Third team end, Jerry Lewisfrom Manual, was second team piok last year and Sterling Mansfield,Birmingham center, was again named to the third team e

Six juniors named to the three honor teams will have the opportunity to shine on the gridiron again next season. Marv Adamo andDon McSwain, both of Birmingham, should make coach George Goff veryhappy as returning lette~en next year. Both second-team tackles -Vern Loveridge and Jack OtMalley -- will be back next fall, as willthird-teamers Tony Kochinas and Dann Boydo

Coach George Goff's Binmingham Braves marched straight throughfive west-Valley League opponents, scoring a city league high of 171points in the process, while allowing its opponents a mere 7 digits. It was no wonder then, that the Braves placed six players on the allleague first team when Helms' All-City Board of Football met at HelmsHall last week to pick its annual football teams.

Coach Goff's Gladiators averaged 34 points in five league contests and a mere point and a half to its opponents. The Braves cameinto the City playoffs steamed up over the opportunity to make amendsfor last year's city finale loss to Manual Arts. Meeting in the firstround, Manual had too many guns for the West-Valley champs, bestingthem, 32-20, however.

And it was Birmingham1s DUdley Schusterick who hauled down "topplayer ft honors for 1962. The Braves' quarterback, who passed for 90of the 171 points scored by his team, was Coach Goff's main offensiveweapon and the 5 r ll, 155-pounder certainly led his team to a most remarkable offensive season in 1962.

A pair of Brave linemen -- Don McSwain and Sterling Mansfield _~are repeaters from last season's first all-league team. Marv Adamoand John Thomas, first team linemen on the t62 team, were on the SGC~ond squad last year. Jim Schmedding and Mike Reece, both of GranadaHills, are second team repeaters.

The 1962 standings behind Birmingham were Canoga Park (3-2),Cleveland (2-2-1), Taft (2-3), Reseda (2-3), and Granada Hills (O-4-~)~

1961

The very strengthy Marine League wound up in a three-way tie forfirst place in 1962 among San pedro, Banning and Gardena. Consequentlyfirst-team representation on this year's All-Marine League Team issplit up pretty evenly among these stalwart elevens.

Ron Barber, one of two juniors to make the All-City Team last year, was a unanimous "player of the yearll choice for the second year in arow. Last year, Ronnie scored 72 points and was the c1ty 's third highscorer. He did just as well in 1962, posting 73 points on 12 TDe anda .single· PAT. Barber played tailback on coach Bill Seixas' singlewing powcJh~use. Coach Seixas calls Ron liThe greatest high schoolplayer I have seen or coached in my 14 years in the business. II

The evenness of the play in the Marine League this year is quiteevident from the fact that four players each from Banning and Gardenaand three boys from san pedro were placed on the all-league first team.Jordan end, John Wilkins, was the only "outsider" to break into thefirst team lineup.

Four players are back from last year's All-Marine teams. Ron Barber is ~e only first team repeater, while Banning's Eddie Kapu and DonHorn of Gardena elevated themselves from the second team of last Year.Gamalier Lesure of San pedro, a second-team selection this year, wason the 1961 first team.

~e top three Marine League clUbs finished the regular season withidentical 3-1 records, while Jordan (1-3) and Narbonne (0-4) brought upthe rear. Banning, winner of the coin flip to get into the city play-offs, beat Huntington Park, Eastern Loop king-pins, 26-13 and Eastvalley co-champ poly, 20-13, before falling to mighty Manual Arts, 35-7.

Surprising "little" Lincoln High School, winner of the NorthernLeague football title for 1962 and "tamer" of city champion Manual Arts0-0 in the semi-finals of the city championships, placed five playerson the All-Northern League team as annual selections were made by theLos Angeles City Board of Football at Helms Hall last week.

Coach Skip Giancanell~smightymites topped their league in scoring with 65 points and finished the regular campaign t-1i th a 4-1 mark.Although not scoring as profusely as other city teams, Lincoln playeda ball control type of game and seemed able to come up with the bigplay when needed. Lincoln fullback Tony Rosas and left half Tony Kochinas proved to be coach Giancane1li's aces through most of the seasonand provided the punch needed to control the ball. Noting this fact, the Helms Board seleoted Rosas and Kochinas as "co-players of the year"in Northern League action for 1962.

Five players repeated from last year 1 s teams. Kochinas was a number one team selection last fall, while Rosas was on the second team.Vic Ruiz of Marshall and Dennis Ballardo of Franklin woved up to thefirst team fram the second one year ago.

In the city playoffs, Lincoln defeated East-Valley Leaguo co-champGrant, 18-14, and then ttfellU to Manual Arts, 0-0, on the "more firstdowns" rule. Northern League standings for 1962 were: Lincoln (4-1),Verdugo Hills ()-l-l), Eagle Rock (2-1-2), Franklin (2-2-l), Belmont(2-3). Marshall (0-5).
