Helm BarRediscover the harbour with a cheeky mid-week wine at Helm Bar
We’re going to hazard a bit of a guess here and say that as aSydneysider, you’ve probably been taking your Harbour for granted. It’s true that we’ve had a pretty dismal summer, but even when thesun is shining it’s remarkably easy to mentally relegate theharbourside strips to the domain of tourist and instead head fordrinks in a laneway bar with no view.
Perhaps sensing that we might need a bit of prompting to take in thesea air, Darling Harbour’s Helm Bar has launched a series of winenights, running from February 16 to March 15 in their Lower Deckbeer garden. Each Thursday will showcase a different wine fromInvivo, a boutique New Zealand winery that’s been attractinginternational attention since its first harvest in 2008. Their citrusySauvignon Blanc has just picked up the title of ‘word’s best’ at the2011 Cathay Pacific IWSC wine competition and is apparently theonly wine that chat show host Graham Norton will have on set. Highpraise indeed. The five variety range also includes a Pinot Noir, aRosé, a Pinot Gris and bella – a low alcohol, low calorie version of theSauvignon Blanc.
A rather pocket-friendly $5 will get you a glass of this award-winning
wine and, of course, a harbour view.

Invivo Wine Nights at Helm BarSince commencing this journey of
wine appreciation, I have started to
be invited to a few little wine
functions here and there. The most
recent event that I attended was
the launch party of Invivo Wine
Nights at Helm Bar Darling Harbour,
and it was fantastic!
To be perfectly honest I had never
been to Helm bar. Darling Harbour has always seemed the place to go for
tourists. However, since moving to my current residence China Town and Darling
Harbour are right on my door step. My eyes have been opened up a whole world
of opportunities in Sydney that one might miss out on if one simply resides in
just one neighbourhood. Another thing that I hadn't realised was that now that
many of the large enterprises are located in the South end of the city, which has
given the area a great afterwork vibe during the week.
By way of introduction, Helm Bar is situated next to the Sydney Aquarium. It is
an open space balcony that has recently been renovated. The outlook offers
patrons a beautiful view of Darling Harbour catering to all weather rain, hail or
shine. This comfortable space has teamed up with the fashionable kiwi wine
brand Invivo and are celebrating by offering premium wines at the super cheap
price of $5 per glass for Helm Bar members every Thursday night for the next five
weeks.
Having over done it somewhat with sauvignon blanc when it was at the height of
fashion, I am not
generally not a fan. I
often find that the
unbalanced levels of acid pucker the sides of my mouth and result in unpleasant
indigestion. The first wine that we tasted at the launch party was just that, a
sauvignon blanc from Marlborough. Despite that Marlborough is actually one of
the best regions in the world for sauv blanc, like most Australians I was
complacent about what we were going to taste. The thing that did prick my
ears, was when Invivo wine maker Rob Cameron said that the 'Bella' brand was
low calorie.
We tasted the wine and were very impressed. Invivo 'Bella' is the first wine

produced in New Zealand to be made
in this style and has been a run away
success. The wine itself is light, crisp
and easy to drink. It is a sauvignon
blanc but does not have any of the
extreme characteristics that we
sometimes associate with the style. It
is simple, easy drinking and you
wouldn't know that there were 30%
less calories.
The way that they make the wine with
less calories is to reduce the alcohol
content. This is a dream for ladies who
like to have a glass of wine when our
male counterparts have a beer, and for
those who enjoy a day at the races.
Have you ever wondered why it is so
easy to overdo it with wine? Wine
ranges between around 11%-15%
alcohol where as a beer or cider
usually sit around 5%-6% which
essentially doubles your alcohol intake
in a serve that is half the size of a
beer. By drinking a low calorie wine
you will be able to indulge in that
glass at the work lunch without fear
that you will be asleep at your desk by
3:00pm.
The only thing to be careful with when
drinking a low calorie wine is to think
that just because you are drinking
fewer calories and alcohol that you
can have twice as much. This is a
common trap that people fall into
when eating low fat food.
If you prefer your wines in the
traditional winemaking style then
Invivo has one to suit almost every
taste. We also tried the regular
Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Rose and
Pinot Noir. All the wines are priced
around $40 per bottle at Helm Bar or $9 per glass. If you want to try some
delicious award winning wines for just $5 per glass make sure you sign up for
membership at Helm bar and attend the wines nights over the next five
weeks. http://helmbar.com.au/
At the end of the tasting one of the friendly Invivo guys asked me which wine I
preferred and whether he could buy me a glass. Surprising even myself as the
words came out of my mouth, "Yes please. My favourite was the Sauvignon
Blanc. I would love another glass".

Helm Bar Wine Nights
Thursday night is a great night to go out. The weekend is so close you can almost reach out and touch it, anda hangover at work is not so bad knowing you only have one more day to get through. The guys at Helm Barmust have been thinking along the same lines when they came up with the idea for their Wine Night series.
Each Thursday from 6pm, an Invivo wine will be featured and will set you back only $5 a glass. Before youcomplain that you can get a schooner at your local for that price, note that these wines are not exactlyequivalent to a VB. Invivo is one of the most awarded wineries in New Zealand over the past three years, winning the world's best Sav Blanc at the 2011 Cathay Pacific IWSX wine competition. Trust me, I've tastetested and these wines are all good.
Set yourself up on the Lower Deck, enjoy the view and munch on a delicious snack from the bar while you'reat it. One round, and I guarantee you'll be penning next Thursday in the diary. Get in quick though, the finalnight is on the 15th of March.
Helm Bar is located at Aquarium Wharf, Wheat Road, Darling Harbour.

Invivo is a New Zealand winery founded six years ago by Rob Cameron and Tim Lightbourne, two schoolfriends who combined their experiences in wine making and marketing after a sojourn in London. The name,Invivo, takes its cue from the time they had spent working in Europe and it is about enjoying wine and havingfun. The label with its star logo brings together wine and fashion with fashion house Zambesi commissioned tofor the design which represents diverse wine regions within New Zealand that the wines come from.

Kicking off the evening is Bella, a low calorie Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough with only 9% alcohol.Crisp, fruity and light-bodied without compromising on flavour, Bella is a wine that is very easy to drinkchilled on hot summer afternoons.
Invivo Sauvignon Blanc is a full-bodied wine that has won several awards including the ‘World’s Best’ in itscategory at the 2011 Cathay Pacific IWSC wine competition. This is a textural Sauvignon Blanc with dominantpassionfruit and pineapple flavours and a fresh palate. The wine is matched with tempura prawns with soy andwasabi mayonnaise.
Full-bodied Invivo Pinot Gris from Marlborough aims to offer a balance between the sweetness and acidity ofthe fruit but ends up delivering more sugar on the palate. The wine suits white cheeses, salads and chickendishes and is paired with Mini Goats Cheese and caramelised onion frittata.
Invivo Rosé which is made using the French saignée method. The fruit is picked at optimal ripeness, the grapesare crushed and soaked with their skins for a few days it is made into wine. This is a dry style rosé withstrawberry and toasty characters, a soft mid palate that goes well with spicy food. Arguably the least favouriteof the range, Invivo Rosé is matched with Sichuan salt and pepper calamari.
The last wine on taste is the Invivo Pinot Noir from Central Otago, an area known for producing good PinotNoir due to its its geology and hot and very short summers. Handmade from five different vineyards with nopumping involved, the wine is aged in oak over spring and summer then bottled without any filtration. Thewine has strong cherry notes, fruit and soft tannins which give it a long finish. This is a complex and earthyPinot Noir which is a pleasure to drink now or cellar. Invivo Pinot Noir is perfectly matched with Peking duckpancakes.

Invivo Wine Nights @ Helm Bar
Last week Helm Bar launched itssummer series of Wine Nights inpartnership with Invivo Wines and itwas the perfect opportunity for meto learn more about wine. RobCameron, Invivo's winemaker, wason hand to introduce the range, taking us through the wine makingprocess and tasting notes.
First up was Bella, a low alcohol(9%) Sauvignon Blanc(Marlborough), great find for thoseafter a low calorie wine that does not compromise on the taste. Fruity and citrusy,Bella is soft and full in texture and quite refreshing.
Next up Invivo Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough), its tropical aromas will make you thinkof summer sunshine, well, that's how Rob put it. This beautiful full bodied winematched perfectly with the Tempura Prawns served with wasabi mayo. Cheers tosummer sunshine!
Moving onto the reds, the spicymusk scented Invivo PinotGris (Marlborough) was up first;matched with soft and cheesyCaramelised Onion and GoatsCheese Frittata, it is a full bodiedfruity red with soft texture, veryeasy on the palate.
Sophie'sRosé (Marlborough), made usingthe French saignée method,is named after Sophie Findlay ofZambesi, a New Zealand fashiondesigner who helped to design theunique Invivo label. This dry
Rosé has a beautiful rose petal colour, smells like crushed strawberries and tastes ofberries and citrus. Rob noted that it will match seafood perfectly, but I can only attestto the flavours of the wine on its own. The waiters serving thematching canapés Sichuan Salt and Pepper Calamari completely missed our table ontheir rounds.
Last wine of the night was the InvivoPinot Noir (Central Otago), Rob wasparticularly proud of this one.
Caramelised Onion and Goats Cheese Frittata

Handmade and aged in oak overspring and summer then bottledwithout any filtration, using thewinemaker's words, it is a labour oflove. With an earthy tone, darkcherries and plums to the nose, thisis a sweet red that was the perfectpartner in crime to the Peking DuckPancakes.
This range of premium New Zealand wine from Invivo, "in life", would make a greatcompanion for summer nights. And for five weeks, a different Invivo wine will be onoffer each Thursday night from 5pm at $5 a glass, now that's good value!
