Your work experience

If you are between 16 and 18 years old it is a requirement that you undertake a Work Experience Placement while you are on your course.

This involves working at a local business which is in the same industry as your course, i.e. if you are taking an engineering qualification you may work at a local engineering or manufacturing company.

The minimum amount of time you would spend on work experience is one week but this will vary depending on your course. This will add immense value to your studies, giving you a much more rounded experience of the subject and providing you with an advantage when you look to enter the workplace.

Sophie Millington - Level 3 Engineering

Sophie completed an Engineering Level 3 course at St Austell which have her the

inspiration to create her own pen business. Whilst at Penrice Academy when Sophie

was in year 10 she attended at experience day at college where she manufactured a

simple brass pen using a lathe. It was this experience which confirmed for Sophie

that she wanted to attend Cornwall College St Austell and study Engineering.

“My Dad studied Engineering at college so I feel I am following in his footsteps a

little. My family had inherited a lathe so as I developed more experience on the

course I decided to start making my own pens. I’m using the money made from pen

sales to buy new tools to speed up the manufacturing process. It takes around four

hours to make each pen, so I am looking to invest more into the business.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Engineering course at Cornwall College St Austell. The

course has definitely taught me lots of skills which are going to help me with my

business going forward.”

Facts for you about Engineering…• There is a clear need to strengthen knowledge of the profession: just

23.6% of young people aged 11 to 14 and 25.5% of those aged 14 to 16 reported knowing what people working in engineering do

• Analysis projects an annual demand for 124,000 engineers and technicians with core engineering skills across the economy, alongside an additional requirement for 79,000 “related” roles requiring a mixed application of engineering knowledge and skill alongside other skill sets

• Estimate identify a shortfall of between 37,000 and 59,000 in meeting the annual demand for core engineering roles requiring level 3+ skills
