Hello Room 11!

I am sorry we aren’t back together again!

Here are some activities you can do to continue

learning at home. This week we are finishing the

unit- Curious George and the Pizza Party. There

are also some fun bonus sensory activities to

explore the “pizza making” in the story!

Please email me at [email protected] if

you have any questions. If any of the activities

are not doable or need adapting, just send me

an email!

Language Arts – Monday, May 11 Objective: SW increase knowledge of story details for Curious George.

Materials: Book: Curious George and the Pizza Party (book attached) PROPs: pizza, chef hat, dough, flour, shapes (icons are the large pictures with the vocabulary name labeled at the top) Materials: vocabulary icons to print and cut out Procedure 1. Tell students we are reading the book: Curious George and the Pizza Party 2. Show students the book. 3. Expose students to story details using concrete objects.

a. What does Curious George like? Pizza b. What do the kids wear? Chef hats c. What is the pizza made of? Dough d. What does George spill on the floor? Flour e. What does George cut out? Shapes

4. Say: There are a lot of things that happen in a story. We call this details. Let’s read to find out the details in the story. Read and emphasize through intonation but not stopping the story flow.

Math – Monday, May 11 Objective: SW practice counting by counting pizzas.

Materials: Pizza Counting worksheet

o Optional manipulatives: plastic pizza play food, play dough

Scissors, glue

Procedure Say “We are going to practice counting pizza today! Like the Pizza Curious

George made in our story.”

Follow the worksheet. When counting, you can represent the objects using a

manipulative (such as play dough, plastic play food, etc.). Use hand-under-hand

assistance to help your student touch each object. Label the objects you are

counting to your student such as, “We are counting pizza slices now! Let’s see

how many we have!” When finished, review the number by picking the correct one

on the side. Trace the number with your student and glue it in the correct spot.

When you have completed counting the characters, review which set had “more.”

Talk about which number was “bigger” and then which number was “smaller.”

Sensory Art

SW explore important vocabulary by engaging with a flour sensory bin. o Make a sensory bin with flour (can use shoe box, Tupperware, etc.)

Add utensils such as spatulas, rolling pin, spoons, etc. and assist your

student in engaging with the flour. Talk about if they “like” it and want

to play with the bin “more” or if they are “finished.”

Language Arts – Tuesday, May 12 Objective: SW increase knowledge of story details by making a story collage.

Materials: Book: Curious George and the Pizza Party (book attached) PROPs: pizza, chef hat, dough, flour, shapes (icons are the large pictures with the vocabulary name labeled at the top) Materials: glue stick, story collage page “What Happens in Curious George?”, and story collage answers (smaller icons with yellow background) Procedure Tell students we are reading the book: Curious

George.

Show students the book.

The book is about: Curious George going to a

party for his favorite food- pizza!

Expose students to story details using icons. Introduce icons

Say: There are a lot of things that happen in a story. We call this details. Let’s read to find out the details in the story.

Read and emphasize through intonation but not stopping the story flow.

Review details using icons. Present icon and label it.

Students will choose the correct story details to paste on a “story collage.” Students will choose the position to place their icons.

Math – Tuesday, May 12 Objective: SW explore circles and ovals by making a shape pizza.

Materials:

Shape Pizza Worksheet

Scissors, glue

Crayons (optional) Procedure

Say, “We are going to explore the shapes circle and oval today by making a shape pizza.”

Introduce your students to each shape. Assist them in tracing the shape with their finger. Talk about how a circle is the same size all around, but an oval is longer on two sides.

Then, build the shape pizza. When adding the toppings, ask your student “do you want to add more?” to decide how much of each topping to add.

When you are finishing making the pizza, count how many circles and ovals there are with your students.

Sensory Art

SW explore important vocabulary by engaging with a flour sensory bin. o See Monday’s plans and continue to explore the project.

Language Arts – Wednesday, May 13 Objective: SW be informally assessed on story details for Curious George.

Materials: Book: Curious George and the Pizza Party (book attached) PROPs: pizza, chef hat, dough, flour, shapes (icons are the large pictures with the vocabulary name labeled at the top) Materials: vocabulary icons to print and cut out, “Curious George Informal Assessment 5/13,” distractor items: eraser, marker, ruler, paper, cup Procedure Tell students we are reading the book: Curious George

Show students the book.

The book is about: Curious George going to a party for his favorite food- pizza!

Read the book using concrete objects and story/core icons to reinforce vocabulary.

Complete Informal Assessment sheet using story/core vocabulary. Mark if the student chose the correct answer. In “Individual Goals” mark if the student made a choice at all.

Math – Wednesday, May 13 Objective: SW practice counting by counting pizzas.

Materials: Pizza Objects Counting Worksheet

o Optional manipulatives: plastic pizza cutters, plastic play food, play dough

Procedure Say, “We are going to explore the shape triangle today by trying to find as many

triangles we can find! We have to look through other shapes that are not triangles to find the triangles.”

o Highlight the triangles in one of the following ways on the worksheet: play dough outline, wiki stick outline, puffy paint outline, or markers outline

After finding the triangles, assist your student in tracing the outline of the triangle. Talk about how the triangle has three straight sides and how each triangle may be different sizes, but all have the same number of sides.

Last, count how many triangles there are with your students. Sensory Art

o SW explore making a pizza using ingredients they have at home.

Use the “Mini Pizza” recipe as a guide. You can assist your

student in making a mini pizza at home using what you have. If

you do not have any ingredients, try creating a pizza with play

dough or drawing one!

Language Arts – Thursday, May 14 Objective: Students will review objects/icons with a game.

Materials: Book: Curious George and the Pizza Party (book attached) PROPs: pizza, chef hat, dough, flour, shapes (icons are the large pictures with the vocabulary name labeled at the top) Materials: Game board and game pieces (attached with materials) Dice is attached and can be assembled (attached with materials) Procedure The game needs to be played with 2 people (can be you and your student or your

student and a sibling) o Have each player pick if they want to be X or O. As you play, draw X or O

on the spaces you get.

On each turn, assist the student in throwing the dice. The icon or color it lands on is the icon the student can put their symbol on. Once a player puts their symbol on an icon, no one else can put a game piece on that spot if they roll that icon. Review the icon with the students, describing what it is in the story.

The game continues until one player gets “three in a row” (three spots on the game board in a row- diagonal, horizontal, or vertical).

Math – Thursday, May 14 Objective: SW play Race to 10 to practice counting up to ten.

Materials:

Race to 10 Worksheet

Dice (real or on phone)

Optional manipulatives to count: cheerios, play dough, blocks etc. (10 for each player. Use marker or pencil if you don’t have manipulative)

Procedure

Say, “We are going to play the game Race to 10 to see who can add up their game pieces to the number 10 first!”

Each player will take turns rolling the dice. When a player rolls the dice, they can cover that many “spots” (paper plates or pizza slices) on their game board with their manipulative (or marker/pencil). Count with your student by touching each spot/manipulative.

The game continues until one player is able to fill their board. The board can only be filled with an exact roll of how many spots are left.

When a player wins, review with your student that the winner has “more.”

Sensory Art SW explore making a pizza using ingredients they have at home.

o Enjoy the project from yesterday!

Language Arts – Friday, May 15 Objective: SW be formally assessed on story details for Curious George.

Materials: Book: Curious George and the Pizza Party (book attached) PROPs: pizza, chef hat, dough, flour, shapes (icons are the large pictures with the vocabulary name labeled at the top) Materials: vocabulary icons to print and cut out, “Curious George Formal Assessment 5/11,” distractor items: eraser, marker, ruler, paper, cup Procedure Tell students we are reading the book: Curious George

Show students the book.

The book is about: Curious George going to a party for his favorite food- pizza!

Read the book using concrete objects and story/core icons to reinforce vocabulary.

Complete Formal Assessment sheet using story/core vocabulary. Mark if the student chose the correct answer. In “Individual Goals” mark if the student made a choice at all.

Math – Friday, May 15 Objective: SW review counting by making “Play Dough Pizza Toppings.”

Materials: Play Dough Pizza Toppings Worksheet

Play dough (if you don’t have play dough, markers, crayons, or pencil will work)

Dice (can use virtual dice) Procedure

Say, “We are going to make pizza with toppings! What is your favorite topping?” Pick a topping for your student that they like or that you like. Help your student create the topping with play dough.

Roll the dice. Add that many toppings to the pizza. Count them out with your student. If you do not have play dough, you can draw on the toppings.

Activity can be repeated.
