The David Salomons Collection of Watches and ClocksThe L.A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art celebrates the reopening of this exhibition featuring items which were stolen from the Museum 25 years ago and were recently recovered.

In the early 1980’s, 102 pieces, more than half of the collection of rare and valuable watches and clocks on display were stolen by one of Israel’s most notorious robbers, who diagnosed with cancer confessed his crime and subsequently pieces were found hidden in a warehouse near Tel-Aviv packed in cheap, ragged cardboard boxes, other pieces were found in Los Angeles, The Netherlands and Paris. This world-renowned collection contains more than 180 watches and clocks, the most significant and special timepieces are the ground-breaking group of clocks by Abraham Louis Breguet (1747-1823), the inventor of some of the greatest technological innovations

in modern watch-making. In addition this collection includes a group of automaton clocks as well as gold musical boxes adorned with enamel pictures, pearls and diamonds. Also featured are a selection of scientific instruments, such as barometric compasses, sundials and telescopes from the 17th to the 19th centuries, as well as an interesting group of clocks manufactured in the 19th century in Europe for the Turkish market. Now available is “The Art of Time” the new exhibition English/Hebrew catalogue containing 168 pages,

many color plates, illustrations and a glossary of terms.L.A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art. 2 Hapalmach St. Tel: (02) 5661291 www.islamicart.co.il

Haiti – The Last CarnivalMarch 11-23

At this time of the year the popular festivities of “Carnival” are celebrated all over the world, however this year there will be no happy, joyful Carnival

in Haiti. The Kastiel Gallery hosts a photographic exhibition by Daniel Kedar, an Israeli who has spent the last 20 years living in Haiti. The photographs on display paint a picture of the beauty and at the same time almost macabre spectacle of last years Haiti Carnival. Kedar, who was on the ground when the recent earthquake struck and was very involved in relief efforts is now dedicating all his time in assisting with the reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in the devastated country. A champion of the charity PRODEV which supports education projects and the disadvantaged in Haiti, Kedar is donating all proceeds of the exhibition towards students currently studying in Haiti in tents.Kastiel Gallery, 36 Alfasi Street, Tel Aviv. the liberation of the Jews who were led out of Egypt by Moses. This festival has many associated traditions including a special Seder meal, where the Hagadah (a book containing the story of the Exodus and the ritual of the Seder) is read and at the center of the table is a Seder plate containing six symbolic foods each with special significance to the retelling of the story of the exodus from Egypt.

There are restrictions on the eating of bread, grains and unleavened products and don’t be surprised when you see certain sections in the supermarket covered-over with paper and not for sale. What you will see for sale in copious amounts is Matza (flat and unrisen bread) which is the primary symbol of the holiday, signifying the hurried exit of the Jews from slavery and the fact that they did not have time to wait for the bread they were baking to rise.

Lasting seven days the first and seventh days are observed as full days of rest, with many businesses/establishments/shops closed, and the middle five as intermediate holidays. Schools are closed and there are many activities and events for children at different venues all around the country. Beit Hatfutsot, the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora has a special program inviting children to learn how Pessach is celebrated in other countries around the world. Flamenco DaysMar 18-20

Championing Spanish culture (especially dance) the Karen Adi Foundation (named after Adi Agmon, a passionate lover of Flamenco dance, who lost her battle with cancer in 1993 at twenty three) organizes the annual Flamenco Days Festival (Días de Flamenco) at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv. Arguably the world’s most passionate dance, flamenco is celebrated with several concerts and workshops. A highlight of this 16th festival is the performance by internationally acclaimed Spanish artists entitled “Piano Abierto”, combining the talents of pianist and composer of innovative Flamenco-Jazz music, David Dorantes with the exquisite dance skills of Pastora Galvan and Joaquin Grilo. The virtuoso dialogue of this performance is an electrifying treat for the eyes and ears.Suzanne Dellal Center, 5 Yeheli St, Neve Tzedek. “Anticipation Time” defines those critical moments between the end of an object’s movement and its human perception. This temporal gap, which precedes the “response time,” is filled up by sensory experience and awareness that anticipate movement, behavior and interpretation. This exhibition examines the concrete biological, physical, psychological and social aspects of “anticipation time” – as well as the poetic potential of the terms – “time” and “anticipation.”The exhibition works including a variety of mediums, examine the various possibilities embodied in duration, such as continuity, succession, circuitousness and simultaneity. They stretch and shrink duration, expanding and condensing it. They contain carefully constructed, awkward or absurd mechanisms, which generate the relationships and shape the influences and responses that arise in the gap between work and viewer.6 Struma St. Bat Yam. As part of an international tour celebrating her London-based dance company’s 10th birthday, Israeli-born choreographer Yasmin Vardimon returns to the land of her birth and for the first time showcases the talents of her dance company with a new work entitled “Yesterday”. This is a retrospective piece featuring some of the most breath-taking duets, striking solos and iconic moments selected from the company’s repertoire. Interwoven with new choreographic material, live video and animation, this bold new work resounds with passion, precision and trademark physicality. Contrasting flashes of daring athleticism with moments of touching beauty, eight dancers interweave scenes of intimate

and vulnerable tenderness with provocative and playful choreography, remaining as stirring and socially relevant as ever.Hertizlya Performing Arts Center, Mar 2-4, 9pm; Haifa Auditorium, Mar 6, 8.30pm; The Jerusalem Centre for the Performing Arts, Mar 7, 8.30pm [199/269NIS] www.jasminvardimon.com

Haifa Museum of Art SHELF LIFE This exhibition is one in a cluster of eight concurrent exhibitions

that explore the phenomenon of collecting and collections. :”Shelf Life” investigates the growing interest in “collecting” expressed by contemporary artists. The works in this exhibition reflect the aesthetics of various “collections” and give expressions to acts of collecting and ordering. They raise questions such as what transforms an accumulation

of objects into a “collection,” and what drives artists to collect. The exhibit demonstrates how contemporary Israeli and international artists relate in their work to various types of collecting, while examining the aesthetic syntax of various kinds of collections and the psychological aspects of collecting and of the artist-collector’s obsessive world.26 Shabbetai Levi St, Haifa. Only the best “vera cucina italiana” (authentic Italian cuisine) is what you will be treated to when dining at this family run, simple yet quaint and elegant Italian eatery. There are two sparkling floors divided into cozy dining areas and the décor both on the outside and the inside add to the atmosphere with the reds, greens and whites of the Italian flag. The menu includes most of the traditional Italian dishes, plus special Roman-Jewish home-style treats. The food is simple, yet excellently prepared and is the kind of food that is remarkably similar to that found in many small and unpretentious restaurants throughout Italy. Start with the warming Pasta e fagioli, a bean soup with pasta and then for a main enjoy the Scallopina alla Marsala, veal scallops dipped in herbed flour and sautéed in butter and Marsala wine. For dessert there is no

resisting the absolutely delicious home-made tiramisu. The homely and intimate atmosphere, authentic food and very personal service make for a refreshing and enjoyable eating experience. 148 Ben Yehuda, Tel Aviv. Tel: (03) 5248818
