It has been a while since we sent out an annual report, so this is long overdue. Going forward, this is something that will be done yearly. This report will incorporate financial gifts received during the fiscal year as well as updates on fundraising and changes at the agency.

It has been a year of growth and change at Bethesda Children’s Home, and there are more exciting things on the horizon. My time as CEO began in June of 2015 and I am privileged to oversee the next chapter of this agency’s history. I have been with Bethesda Children’s Home for close to 25 years in a number of capacities; most recently I was the Operations Director. It has always been my vision that Bethesda provides quality programming to youth and families, and I am honored to have an opportunity to turn that vision into reality.

There have been other exciting personnel changes at Bethesda. Jerrad Rimel has taken over as Operations Director. Jerrad has been with Bethesda for fifteen years and has previously served as a Child Care Counselor, Residential Supervisor and most recently, as the Director of Residential Services. Jerrad’s belief in the mission of Bethesda Children’s Home combined with his determination that Bethesda be recognized as a leader in providing quality programming make him a natural to serve in this capacity.

Additionally, our Development Department has undergone a substantial change. Justin Calabrese assumed the position of Development Director. Justin has been with us for almost ten years in various capacities. He is very excited to lead this department into the future. He has a lot of plans and I ’m confident he will do a great job! Also, Al Gesler III has been brought on board as our Major Gifts Director. Al has previously worked at Penn State Behrend and Thiel College, and I am thrilled to have him as part of our team. Fundraising is the cornerstone of the Development Department. There were three fundraising events within this reporting period. The next annual report will cover four events. The annual Mud Run was held in September and it was a really fun event. The course is challenging and, as its name implies, very muddy! We had over 300 people participate with the proceeds helping to fund the programs of Bethesda.

In April we held our annual scholarship gala at the Riverside Inn in Cambridge Springs. It was an amazing event to raise money for our scholarship fund. Through the proceeds of this event we were able to provide scholarships to six young adults who want to further their education.

Our golf outing was once again held at the Meadville Country Club in June. It was a beautiful day and everyone had a great time. The proceeds for this event benefit the programs provided at Bethesda Children’s Home.

In 2019, Bethesda will celebrate 100 years of serving the youth and families of Pennsylvania. What started as an orphanage on a plot of land in Woodcock Township has grown to include three facilities in the City of Meadville and two facilities in Erie: the Bethesda Trinity Center and the Bethesda Leadership Center. We are constantly looking for ways to grow further, and thanks to an extremely generous gift, we have the very unique opportunity of expanding our programming into Armstrong County. I cannot wait to see what all we can accomplish.

Often, growth involves change. When we began in 1919, we did so as the Bethesda Orphan-age and, as our range of services evolved, our name changed to Bethesda Children’s Home. Because our services and programming continue to evolve, our Board of Directors, in 2015, developed a strategic plan which specified for a rebranding to take place. What does this mean? It means that very soon this agency will have a new name. We have chosen a name that both more adequately describes what we do and also takes us back to our roots. We are proud of our Lutheran association and we wanted a name that would reflect that. We are so much more than a children’s home. In our day programs alone we work with more than 700 children and youth every day.

As Bethesda Children’s Home looks to the future, I am confident that we will continue to grow and serve even more Pennsylvania families. We could not accomplish anything without the incredible support of our donors. I want to thank you all so very much for your contributions to our mission of providing hope and healing to children, youth and families.

School Expansion Complete The new addition to the school opened in August of 2016. The

renovations provide six new partial hospitalization classrooms, a

new library, nursing suites, conference rooms, resource rooms and

offices. A project of this magnitude required much cooperation of

program youth, staff and contractors; when the cafeteria was made

available to Bethesda children, the reviews were nothing short of

outstanding. The total cost of construction and renovation was

approximately $3.4 million. Since government funds and third party

reimbursements were not available for the project, Bethesda relied

on our generous supporters. Thank you to all who made our

Capital Campaign a success!

Petersen Foundation

Bethesda received a $25,000 gift from the John M. and Gertrude E. Petersen

Foundation for our Capital Campaign to complete the new addition to the school, which opened in August of 2016. In our

December 2016-17 annual report we will be highlighting a second gift from the Petersen Foundation of $150,000 allowing Bethesda

to eliminate a major portion of agency debt.
