Hello Everyone and welcome to English Language Learner (ELL) Class

I am very excited about our school year 2012 and being able to work with a group of wonderful ELL students.

I have a few years of experience working as an ESL teacher as well as a Bilingual teacher for grades K thru 5th.

My main goal this year is that each student will increase reading comprehension at least by one level; and be able to develop their writing skills.

English Language Learner (ELL) Classes provide necessary and helpful instruction to students with non-English backgrounds. Individualized study plans focus on oral and written usage of the English Language. ELL classes are designed to assure speedy acquisition of English Language proficiency and assist students to achieve in core academic subjects.

Statistics show that during last year our ELA students make a noticeable progress in their language learning.

ELA scores increase by 18% (from 36.6% to 43.4% proficient) 43.4% of students achieve grade level proficiency (levels 3 and 4) 4th grade ELA overall performance ranks 46/61 of tested charter schools 4th grade ELA growth ranks 9th among tested schools (32% to 53.1%)

Importance of ELL

1. ELLs have a first language-also called a home language, primary language or native language other than English and are in process of acquiring English

2. Some ELLs have newly arrived in the United States, while others were born in the United States but have lived for many years in households where family members do not speak English.

3. Some ELLs have already acquired and develop literacy skills in their native languages, while others have not learn the academic vocabulary and background knowledge necessary for continued success in school.

Characteristics of ELL children

ELL Curriculum program is the same Reading Street curriculum program that is used in the regular classroom. ELL is a component of the Reading Street Curriculum. Reading Street is designed to integrate ELL students to the content material taught in the regular class. The learning of concepts, vocabulary and skills, give English Language Learners efficient access to the core instruction.

Class Size: Small groups of 2 to 8 students

Activities: are differentiated by students levels and abilities

Levels: Beginners, Intermediates and Advanced

Class time: 50 minutes each day

Days: advanced students 3 times per week, beg/int 5 times per

week

ELL Curriculum program:

ELL Handbook: contains differentiated instruction activities, ELL strategies, expert advice, and useful resources that guide ELL students to transition to advanced level of proficiency. It also provides detailed ELL background, lesson-by-lesson resources and strategies, and easy navigation by day and by week.

Curriculum materials currently used in the class

Teacher’s Edition: ELL principles are built into lesson design. Daily ELL Lessons provide sheltered techniques and routines fir teaching core skills and strategies.

ELL Posters: these are high quality illustrations and five days of activities support oral vocabulary, selection vocabulary, and lesson concepts.

ELD/ELL Teaching Guide: Scaffold lesson plans for ELD and ELL Readers support language acquisition and literacy development each week.

Students materials currently used:

Every Friday students will be taking home a homework that reinforces the skills they learned for that week. Each child that completes their homework and submitted on the due date, will receive points that will accumulate so they can change it for prizes given in the classroom.

The ELL teacher will maintain a record of each scholar’s work, progress and attendance on a daily basis. ELL teacher will grade and give a score for all scholar assignments in grades K-5 when appropriate.

ELL students will: received the same report card as in used in general education Receive a quarterly grade in the ELL course, ELL, an maintain a minimum of three comments that reflect language progress Receive progress report grades from the ELL teacher

Each Month Mr. King will promote a book where the students can learn values and character trait. September’s book is: The Brand New Kid by Katie Couric. It promotes Respect. ELL teacher will incorporate this book as part of their read aloud books.

Principal’s book of the month

Award ceremonies will be held on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:00 pm during the PTA meeting at the Middle School auditorium. All scholars K-8 will be honored together. There will be one scholar selected by the teacher from each class to receive each of the awards. The names of these scholars will also appear on the bulletin board in the main office. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to support the scholars that have earned the awards by attending the meetings. Parents of the scholars that have earned the awards should make every effort to ensure that your child is present to receive the award.

The scholars selected must meet all of the following criteria for the month: Attendance is 95% or above Wears school uniform daily All homework is done daily All class work is done daily Demonstrates excellent behavior

Award Ceremonies

BwCCS scholars have a right to an exceptional education, one that requires a purposeful school climate as well as a safe and supportive community. BwCCS has developed a Code of Conduct to define behaviors that promote a productive learning environment. The Code is designed to help scholars understand and accept responsibility for their behavior and actions, and teach them to cultivate a serious academic environment. The Principal reserves the right to modify any policy at any time.In ELL Classrooms: Scholars enter every class quietly, greet their teacher, go to their assigned desk, and immediately follow their teacher's instructions. Scholars should raise their hand and wait to be called on before speaking in class (unless the teacher asks for a unison response). Scholars should be actively engaged in class. Scholars should respond appropriately to teacher corrections and immediately do what the teacher asks. Teachers establish routines for lining up and dismissal at the end of class. Classrooms are always left neat and clean at the end of each period.

This 6-level, color-coded system, outlined below, provides clear information about how misbehavior will be appropriately addressed in all circumstances.

GREEN Meeting behavior expectations. Students start every day on GREEN.

YELLOW: 1

Repeated minor to moderate impulsive misbehavior that disrupts the class.

TEACHER will utilize one or more of the following options at his or her discretion: • Student-Teacher conference • Time Out • Verbal Warning/Redirection • Contact parent/guardian by note or phone

BLUE: 2 Continued minor to moderate impulsive misbehavior after receiving Level 1 disciplinary action or minor to moderate intentional misbehavior.

TEACHER will contact parent/guardian by email or letter home. In addition, teacher will utilize one of the following options at his or her discretion: • Student-Teacher conference • Time Out • Verbal Warning/Redirection • Temporary removal from class/Detention

RED: 3 Continued minor or moderate impulsive or intentional misbehavior after receiving Level 2 disciplinary action.

TEACHER will contact parent/guardian by phone or schedule a meeting. In addition, teacher will utilize one of the following options at his or her discretion: • Lunch detention • After-school detention • Loss of classroom privileges for the day and next day

4 A scholar receives Level 2 or 3 disciplinary action 10 times in a 20 day period.

GUIDANCE COUNSELOR, completes a Behavior Corrective Action Plan with teacher, parent, and scholar.

5 Ongoing minor to moderate misbehavior not successfully modified by the Behavior Corrective Action Plan or • severe impulsive or intentional misbehavior.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, will enforce at least one of the following options: • In-School suspension • Out-of-School suspension • Payment for damage • Counseling • Exclusion from school activities

• Community service

6 Repeated (2-5) Level 5 misbehavior or • misbehavior that constitutes extreme noncompliance with school rules or threatens the safety of others or • serious intentional misbehavior considered criminal.

PRINCIPAL will enforce at least one of the following options: • Contact police • Payment for damage • Long-term suspension • Expulsion
