Hello Elk Grove!
Welcome to 2017! In this month’s newsletter, we welcome a new
member to our POP team. We will also focus on deterring porch pirates,
give a heartfelt thank you for the Toy Project, and provide a calendar of
upcoming events (including the Explorer’s Wild Wild Fest fundraiser
dinner).
MEET THE POP TEAM – OFFICER GREG KAWAMOTO
The EGPD POP (Problem Oriented Policing) unit is proud to welcome
Officer Greg Kawamoto to our team. Officer Kawamoto brings with him a
wealth of knowledge and expertise. His primary area will be beat 1, which
is Elk Grove between I-5 and the train tracks, but he will cover other areas
as well.
In addition, Officer Kawamoto will be the department liaison for the
Special Olympics, and he wanted everyone to know the Elk Grove PD will
be participating in the Polar Plunge on Saturday, February 11, from 10 AM
to 3 PM at the Sacramento Aquatic Center. Yes, your police officers will
be jumping into chilly Lake Natoma to help raise funds for the Special
Olympics of Northern California. If you would like to join us at the plunge,
or just donate to the EGPD team, you can do so at www.sonc.org.
THANK YOU FOR THE EGPD & CSD TOY PROJECT SUCCESS!
The Elk Grove Police Department and the Cosumnes Service
District are proud to have presented the 21st Annual Toy Project
during this last holiday season. The EGPD and CSD collected and
distributed toys to predetermined needy families. The Toy
Project was a huge success this year, which was all made possible
by the fine citizens of Elk Grove who donated toys for the
children. Toys were delivered by police and fire personnel to
many homes and the hospitals in the region. We would like to
thank the following businesses for being donation stations and
going above and beyond in their generosity:
• Les Schwab Tire Center
• The Elk Grove Senior Center
• Elliott Ranch Elementary School
• Valley Hi Country Club
• Dentistry by Design
• Enterprise Rent a Car
• Jackson Properties
• California Northstate University College of
Medicine
• Maita Chevrolet
• Umpqua Bank
• Flat Land Brewing
• Realty Round Up
• Vintage at Laguna Senior Apartments
• Sunshine Swim and Fitness Center
• Moms in Motion at The Running Zone
PORCH PIRATES – PREVENTING PACKAGE DELIVERY THEFT
Package thefts are crimes of opportunity. The Elk Grove Police Department would like to remind residents
to take extra care when having mail and packages delivered to their residence. Here are some steps you
can take to help keep your package safe from theft.
1. Avoid scheduling packages deliveries if you are not there to receive them. Instead, consider having
them delivered to your workplace, a trusted neighbor, the apartment / condo complex office, or
arrange to have them held at the shipping company for you to pick up later. Also, Amazon now has
secured lockers inside of Safeway and other locations.
2. Require packages be delivered with a signature required. This way they should not be left unattended
on a porch.
3. Watch out for your neighbors. Ask a trusted neighbor to pick up any packages left on your porch, and
return the favor for them.
4. Track your packages so you know when they should be delivered. If you can’t be there, ask the
shipping company to deliver to where you are, deliver at a different time/day, or hold it for pick up.
5. If you are going to be away for more than three days, put a hold on your mail
(https://holdmail.usps.com). Remember this will work for the mail, but not other shipping companies.
As always, if you see something suspicious or a crime in progress, call the Elk Grove Police Dispatch Center
at 911 or 916-714-5111 for an emergency, or 916-714-5115 for a non-emergency.

The Explorers are area teenagers who aspire to have a
career in law enforcement. They train with the PD,
work at our events in the community, and are held to
our high standards of
professionalism, ethics, education,
and physical fitness. Many of
them have gone on to successful
careers in law enforcement,
college, the military, and other
fields.
